Fated To Love You… in bed

Huh, adding “in bed” to the end of everything totally works for drama titles. Try it. *waits for you to get to Big Man and God’s Gift* Snerk. The latest teaser for MBC’s upcoming rom-com remake Fated to Love You finally gets us to the premise of the show — Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara drink their weight in soju, climb into bed together, and then wake up the next morning horrified to realize they slept with a total stranger. Oh, drunken one-night stands, where would drama romance be without you?

Because this is dramaland, that one-night stand naturally leads to a pregnancy. I know we’re to blame Fate for all these coincidences, but I wonder if we counted, how many so-called acts of Fate in rom-coms are actually just decisions laced with liquor. Anyway, that’s how the chaebol prince and the plain office girl begin their topsy-turvy romance, where they’re getting to know each other while trying to prepare for parenthood.

I’m a little concerned at the overwhelming number of commenters who have described the original Taiwanese drama as melodramatic. The remake keeps being called cheery and light, and I’m expecting a strong comedic bent, but now I’m bracing myself for someone to pull the rug out from under me. Don’t tell me what happens! I like to hope for the best, and this couple is too cute to be spending half the drama in tears, right? RIGHT? Lalalalalala, I can’t hear you!

Fated to Love You premieres next Wednesday, July 2.

It seems that this version will be more realistic than the Taiwan version, which was too dreamy and fairytale like.

the taiwanese drama fated to love you was fun at the start, probably the first five episodes, but with around 20-25 episodes, er, it can be considered as a melodrama (as a whole) considering what went through the remaining episodes.

there's just so many things that happened with the lead couple that lead to misunderstandings because they never talk to each other, but the drama kept harping on the fact that they are destined for each other so they separate but always find themselves connected to each other.

i love the fated to love you taiwanese drama because of the first few episodes and the awesome soundtrack.

99 times i love you - http://youtu.be/tX_Y1l9olCM

sticky note wishes - http://youtu.be/aBbNkOIl59Y

however, i haven't watched a lot of taiwanese dramas so i can't really tell if this is a good drama as a whole, objectively speaking.

i'm looking forward to the korean version even though most korean adaptations of other dramas pale in comparison compared to the original because fated to love you is all about romance, and if anything, one of the korean dramas' strengths is romance.

i'm keeping my fingers crossed that the korean version of fated to love you will be amazing...

Fated To Love You wasn't super funny, it had its moments in the beginning but it was more melodramatic than comedic so I'm not sure where MBC is going with this.

I don't know what you watched but fated to love you taiwanese was comedic laced with seriousness in dialogs; the girls family were definitely characters and will bring the comedic relief for this drama; it was only scenes with the ex that were melodramatic and scenes after they were forced to marry. I watch the taiwanese version almost once a year; I love it!

ALL rom-coms end up being melodramatic at some point. i seriously never saw one that didn't. (even let's eat who was practically a sitcom was getting melo here and there..) also, i only saw the first ep. for the taiwanese one and they didn't really end up together because they drank.. he was fooled by some guys in to bed with a prostitute and she was high on pills and got to the wrong room.. i thought it was pretty funny and i hope they will keep this part to some extent. also i remember being surprised by the hotness of the sex scene. but taiwan and korea are really different so....

I'm very ambivalent about this Korean remake! I really don't find the teasers funny at all and actually I was hoping for a more "serious" Korean comedy. Koreans can do some good rom-coms like My Girl, Personal Taste...It just seems wrong to me that here they try to copy the Taiwanese version, and they fail for me because Taiwanese humor is so different from Korean humor.
But of course, I'm biased because I've seen more than once the Taiwanese version and I really like it, even the part when it becomes melodramatic!!! that was a great episode!! And I know I mustn't judge before seeing the Korean remake..so let's see, hoping for the best...

Fated was one of the 2 Taiwan dramas that I ever actually finished watching. I thought it was pretty funny in parts, but it also had that Taiwan Pollyanna sugary flavor that makes so many Taiwan drama totally annoying to me. I will admit to fast forwarding a lot of her family parts, because they just were kind of ..meh.

I will be curious as to how the Korean version plays out.

I've seen Fated to Love you about 6 times already... In truth the drama can be categorized as a Romantic Comedy by Korean standards... But it does have a heavy dialogue and parts within it that some would consider melodramatic (which also happens in a lot of Korean rom-com).

That being said, with the plot changes (being drunk instead of being mistaken and sleeping with a stranger, amongst other things) it seems like MBC is honing into the rom-com angle strongly, which is something I can't wait to see!

I would love to have a cameo from the Original stars but I know it's not going to happen...

EITHER way, I CANT wait for this adventure to start next week, of course the pain will be waiting week by week for new episodes!

Well, I may be delusional because I adore him. I am currently watching Tree with Deep Roots so it's going to be kind of weird to see him in a romcom lol. It's a rom com, right ?

And Jang Nara looks so young ! I watched some cuts of their previous dramas together and damn, I prefer her with glasses and black hair :D I FEEL THE CHEMISTRY <3

The Taiwanese version really did get super melodramatic towards the middle but it look like MBC is really going for a much light-hearted version. It will probably help that the Korean version will have less episodes (hopefully).

I'm really loving these teasers, so can't wait!!1

yeah I wondering if they going to just skip the second half of the story and use the first half, I mean what happens with the baby and after, you simply have to go straight meldorama there no other way, unless they cut down the reasons behind what happened to a bare bones I can not see them fitting it all in with 16 episodes. And even if it is a hit show, with the leads they have, it very unlikely to get more than a week extention as they would already have more work planned.
Still I was kind of hopping to see the gangster kidnapping and the lead never losing a fight..beacuse he never been in one before..lol and the barrel scene.

The middle part is melodramatic but on the positive side after what went down and the cruelty leading up to it she made a very logical choice and I liked that. Not here for the jerk getting his redemption right away

Required fields are marked *

I agree! I loved the Taiwanese drama. That part you are describing made me cry so hard (not the choice, but what caused her to make the choice). It has heart, but the Taiwanese drama could never really wear the label of melo. It was rather ridiculous (for comedy) at times, but not because of melo.

Though I wonder why they took out the original premise from the Taiwanese version of how they ended up in bed together for drinking. Maybe because drinking in such a big Korean thing? I liked the original reason because as pointed out alcohol is just a little overused as a plot catalyst and the original premise was funny and kinda of suited the hero and heroine explaining how they could possibly end up in bed with a stranger.

For those who haven't seen the Taiwanese version this comment as well as others must seem weird and hyper-ambiguous. Point is though, there's a lot of love for this drama, its Taiwanese original and the upcoming Korean remake. :)

I actually love the middle part of the taiwanese version too! If you take that out, there's no point in the story!!! what happens there is a kind of catalyst for the heroine, it suddenly makes her react, take a stand, think about herself and stop being a doormat to the hero!! Seeing her become a confident woman, after enduring with her how badly she was treated by the hero and her colleagues, is so satisfying!!! I like this drama for that reason too: at the beginning, you've got a weak, submissive, too-nice heroine and she becomes by the end of the drama really strong and self-confident, so in this drama, not only the hero changes but the heroine too!! you see her awakening!!
I am very fond of taiwanese dramas like "Fated to love you", "Autumn's Concerto" and "It started with a Kiss 1 & 2" because melodramatic moments are so intense and brilliantly-dealt with! the aim is to make the viewer feel and it's often a success!!

I'm gonna sound like a broken record but I just can't get over Jang Hyuk's hair - it's so bad.

I love the lively posters even if the actual teasers look bland. CJH looks good though. I think this is the first time I've ever found his even slightly attractive. Maybe it's that golden jacket and headphones he's completely rocking. Or the nice, non-greasy hair he's sporting.

I'm more excited for the ladies in this drama. I'm hoping Jang Nara's character isn't as huge a doormat as the original. And WJW's character isn't as cookie-cutter as I'm expecting.

Ditto on the hair. I've seen the tw version and Ethan Ruan is soooo good, that Jang Hyuk doesn't seem like the same character.
Ethan Ruan was a serious, fashionable businessman and it showed completely in his clothing and haircut and everything.
From the trailer the k version seems more manga if it makes sense. Come on, is there a serious businessman who would wear a suit like that in real life? With that haircut? I feel like it's too much - apart from the fact that it's not flattering, it seems unrealistic-.

Required fields are marked *

I agree!! That's my other issue with this Korean remake! The lead character isn't the same as the original one played by Ethan Ruan...The lead character in the original version is a complex character, not very nice actually, kind of selfish and arrogant at the beginning and even in the way he treats the heroine! so that was interesting to see his conflicted reactions and the change in his feelings!!!

Read a bit of the comic a long time ago but it was so cliched and boring I barely made it passed the beginning. Looking at all the colors in the stills, though, gives me hope that they'll deliver with a comic-book flavor and play for laughs (hopefully).

I'd say it's best to prepare yourself for some melodrama, that way if the writers choose not to go in that direction with this remake, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Personally, I'm ready for just about anything. If I can make it through all 24 episodes of the original, I can most definitely handle 16 episodes of a remake.

Bring it on, Fated to Love You!

LOL. You have more patience and fortitude than I do, I only made it through 17 episodes of the original, the writing was just so weak at times and the plots were starting to feel pointless. Life just got too short at that point and I had to stop. I have high hopes the remake is going to be a lot more tightly written.

haha, It was my first drama. I had no prior drama viewing experience, so I kept thinking it would get 'better.' I've watched a bajillion dramas since then, so I know what to expect, and I would probably quit on the original Fated to Love You if I were watching it now. I also just really loved Joe Chen and her ability to cry like a normal human being while simultaneously making me cry with her. It's kind of unnatural how good she is at crying.

What annoyed me somewhat in the T version was the ridiculous slapstick-ish and non-funny humor, especially on her family's side. That seems to be way too common in T-dramas, but this one I thought was far better than most.

That bothered me too. I mean, I came to really love her family, especially her mom, but those sisters were really over the top half the time, and I wanted to grab them by the ears and shout 'This is not how normal people behave!'

Required fields are marked *

I wouldn't call it lighthearted really since the doormat lead is stuck in such a bad situation and jerkass is such a terrible person to her. But I also wouldn't really call it melodramatic either. This drama is a lot of things and sometimes it worked and a lot of the time it didn't (the 2nd half tbh)

I haven't been in Kdramaland for awhile, but the Jang reunion with FTLY is a dream come true! What better actors to bring this tale back to life. FTLY is still one of my favorite TW dramas, and it was mostly due to the leads' character developments. I enjoyed the [sometimes ridiculous] comedy and the melodrama. I think that for the specific events that occur, it would be very difficult to keep the comedy smooth throughout and I appreciate it that the TW production took the plot seriously at that point. I don't think it's impossible though, as the comedy is the charm between the two, so I'm looking forward to how this adaptation will handle it. Hopefully more balanced, but I don’t have expectations it will be any less melodramatic.

I actually think Jang Hyuk can sport that hair with ease, but if it's going to be a bother for some, there's probably a high chance he'll be getting a new do halfway into the drama. That would be the least of my problems. I hope there won't be too much focus on side characters and unnecessary dialogue, but I have to say that the resolve with "Priest Dylan" and "Anna" was unexpected, heartwarming and one of the best I've seen for our ill-doomed second leads. I probably like it more than the actual ending, so I hope they keep it haha. What a great role CJH chose to temporarily leave his fans with.

The posters are cute. A little much on the fantasy and fairytale side, which works for the main premise I guess. There's a lot more to FTLY, but if that's the hook then I'm for it! JH and JNR, what better way?

OK. Seeing Choi Jin-hyuk as a DJ in K-Fate to Love You doesn't make me want to watch this show. This has nothing to do with what Taiwanese Dylan's character or hobbies.

Please, Korean people, stop taking titles from very popular shows and ruin them (City Hunterrr. OK, it was great but it had almost NOTHING to do with Tsukasa Hojo's work. It was an insult to all the fans.)

I love Choi Jin-hyuk but he should consider signing in to a better managing company and choose his roles more carefully. Emergency Couple was great but hello, Heirs was crap and I don't think this role is going to be good. The character he is supposed to play is calm, caring and... not fun.

Apparently it has a dog in it, so it can't be all bad :)

Um...you WILL want to brace yourself. The first half is cheery and light...and then the second half piles on every tragic drama trope in quick succession. The hero also does something I personally find unforgivable.

Having said that...I"m hoping the Korean adaptation redeems the story.

Seems that you watched the original version too. I dun dare to put too high hopes on this remake. Playful kiss is really really dissapointing as a remake. And this remake seems to be lacking out many of the interesting characters like the female lead's family, the secretary, gangster and the lawyer if we only look at these posters. Oh btw, the actor who acted as the lawyer passed away. It is so sad. He is such a good comedian

Well, we don't know yet whether they've removed any of those characters from the plot. The posters aren't really meant to show the other characters. They're just to show our four leads. Hopefully, they kept most of the characters from the original.

Some people just think that what happens to people who get totally drunk is really funny.

Probably not my cup of tea. Didn't see the original, but, in 2014, if the heroine had a one night stand with unprotected sex, the next morning she should run (not walk) to the doctor for an STD test and the morning after pill.

No thr original drama is really cheery and light too. It is only dark at times. I watched it 5 times. Love it sooooooo much! If that is dark, then YFAS and YAS are much darker lol.

"The remake keeps being called cheery and light.."

But what's more cheery and light than a Candy finding her 'twue wuv' via alcohol abuse, sleeping strangers, an unplanned pegnancy and shotgun wedding?

How could that NOT send a positive and uplifting message to girls worldwide?

While I agree, I cannot see how it is any less positive than the hundreds of dramas that show us girls taking years of total abuse from the Worst Mother In Law ever, or the dozens of women that put up for years with their hubby having a (or more) mistress on the side, even to the point of bringing the mistresses kid into the family.

I certainly do not see the all too common portrayal of DIL's as being half a notch above being an animal exactly uplifting to girls worldwide.

Exactly. :-)

Though, with the mistress' kid, I kind of get that. It's not the kid's fault they were born into that situation. It's only decent to give them a shot at a (somewhat) normal family life.

Choi Jin Hyuk oppa is looking so cute and so damn handsome in those pics....
Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara are really looking so good together. ....I am really looking forward to this drama.
And last but not the least....
You're Beautiful. ..in bed--really works but not in a bad way...

It wasn't melodramatic. I've seen more silly plot points in other TW. It was boring and draggy in the middle maybe.

I remember the last half of the drama being draggy.

On the other hand with a cast I love, I can just mute and watch them on screen.

I will wait for this drama.

I like FTLY, I like how the show keeps remind me why those characters exist, and why their relationship worthy to be told. (I afraid I will spoiler anything further than this :D)

If I can endure the worst remake ever just to know how they deliver the character and story, I know I will be fine.

Yeah the Taiwanese version was sort of melodramatic. It also had some really dark moments. Because of the original storyline, there will have to be some of that in this version.
