Gong Hyo-jin fractures arm in three-car collision

Hey universe, quit it with all the dramaland accidents, will you? It makes me so nervous! Actress Gong Hyo-jin (Master’s Sun) was in a car accident early on the morning of June 19, as she was being driven back to Seoul after a late-night shoot on the set of her new drama It’s Okay, It’s Love. She was in a van with her manager and two other staff members on their way back from the drama set in Yongin, when they were involved in a highway pile-up involving her van, a 4.5-ton truck, and another 2.5-ton truck. Yeeeeeek.

Her management released a statement that she fractured her left arm and suffered some minor wounds to the face. She’s currently being treated at the hospital, and they say she’s okay. I can’t believe she collided with two freight trucks and managed to walk away with a broken arm. What a relief. I really hope this isn’t the start of some SBS Wednesday-Thursday drama accident curse, after what just happened on the set of You’re All Surrounded. Un-jinx! Un-jinx!

They say that in general the injuries won’t interfere with her drama, though I don’t think you can exactly be inconspicuous about an arm cast. I’m sure they’ll have to figure out a way to write it into the script, which is a little less organic than Lee Seung-gi’s fight-scene accident when he’s playing a cop who just got attacked by a killer. She’s playing a psychiatrist who falls in love with a mystery novelist (Jo In-sung), so maybe they’ll have to invent an angry patient who attacks her or something.

Reps from the production have stated that they’re not worried about lost time since writer Noh Hee-kyung and PD Kim Kyu-tae are known to heavily pre-produce their shows, and It’s Okay, It’s Love has been shooting since early May. They’re currently on schedule to have filmed half the episodes by the premiere in July, which is pretty average for them. So even if they get behind the halfway mark, it builds in some healing time for Gong Hyo-jin.

The problem is actually a shoot planned in Okinawa in three days’ time, where Gong Hyo-jin and Jo In-sung are scheduled to fly to Japan and join a staff that’s already in place to shoot a portion of the drama. She’s likely not going to be able to fly so soon, and they might have to cancel the shoot abroad; it’s not like you can send your drama hero alone for his romantic getaway. For now Gong Hyo-jin will be resting up.

It’s Okay, It’s Love is scheduled to follow You’re All Surrounded, and premieres July 23.

This is horrible! After what happened to Seung-gi now its GHJ. I'm just glad its nothing too serious because anything can happen in such a huge accident.

At least she has time to rest unlike Seung-gi who was forced to 4 days after getting his eye stabbed. She can get a couple of weeks especially with YAS's delays too. Get well really really soon GHJ!

Thank goodness it wasn't any worse, but still, bad enough.

Here's to GHJ getting some rest and healing up.

I have so much love for her that I hope she gets better quickly. If this interferes with shooting the drama, I'll be okay with that. I just hope she takes the time to heal properly. Unni, fighting!

Okay, this is the weirdest thing ever: I'm rewatching Best Love right now and she just had an accident in it. I paused the video and came here, and BAM! This news!

I was very shocked at first so forgot to write that I hope she gets well soon.

(I'm still weirded out by the coincidence though, as "she fractured her left arm and suffered some minor wounds to the face" in Best Love as well.)

Also coincidentally, I just finished watching an older GHJ drama (I won't say which one to avoid spoilers), and I purposely stopped watching just as a Truck of Doom was about to hit her. The ending of that drama had already been spoiled for me and I prefer to envision an alternate ending, so now I'll just imagine her character recovering from a broken arm and living HEA.

I think she was very lucky that her injuries weren't more serious (considering there were two trucks involved), and I'm so grateful because she's a sentimental favorite of mine.
I'm also grateful that there are plenty of eps. ready to go~ that's the sane way to operate, Dramaland!

Perhaps we should stop referencing the Truck of Doom, it has gained too much reality and now is breaking into the real world. (Or perhaps I should get a life :P)

Well first of all get wwell ssoon unni and second of all wow! Ha! 2 trucks and only a broken arm sso either tthey're not saying how she really is or she is the luckiest person ever! Other than that i am glad the drama has enough episodes shot for her tto get some rest...and also hope no one else gets hurt as well especially in accident-prone dramaland...and also looking forward to it's ok, it's love...two actors that i just adore so...fingers crossed

Ok but...why wouldn't she be able to travel? Why wouldn't she be able to work? A broken arm in a cast doesn't sound too terribly bad - people deal with that every day and go right back to work or school.

Is it something worse than that? Did she have to have some kind of major surgery to put it back together? I certainly want people to be responsible about their health but honestly...broken arms are a dime a dozen. It's awkward, it's not fun...but it's not 'you have to stay in bed for a week' either.

Not throwing shade. Trying to understand. I recognize that the media reporting can often be ... less than correct.

Have you ever had a triple-fracture yourself? Or had it happen to friend or family? I think we would best let Gong Hyo-jin and her doctors be the judge of how much healing she needs.

This isn't the fate of nations being decided here. It's just a TV show. If she needs to heal, let her heal.

1. Didn't read anywhere that it was a triple-fracture; there were 3 vehicles involved in the accident, though.
2. Wasn't stressing about the drama at all. I'm guessing if they can hide pregnancies they can hide arms, or work them into stories. Don't really care about that part of it.
3. Wasn't commenting on her at all, and wish her all the best. She's a fine actress and I'm sure she's a lovely person.
4. WAS honestly wondering what would make the broken arm (as reported) such a big deal, and thinking about all the other times that seemingly uncomplicated injuries or illnesses require hospital stays, and wondering what that implies. A difference in medical treatment philosophy? A deliberate downplaying of severity? Etc.

In addition to health concerns, which I'm not in a position to speculate about, another thing to consider is that the broken arm, while it can perhaps be written into later portions of the drama, probably wouldn't work continuity-wise with the scenes that are to be filmed in Japan in just a few days. The producers might figure that it's best to just give up on that if they're not sure how they're going to make it work; cut that part out and re-write to create a workaround.

well, her work, even if she is playing a non-action-movie character, is fairly physical in nature and likely involves moving around a lot more than the average job. Not to mention the fact that she is likely working much longer and more irregular hours than your typical 9 to 5-er, even if her drama is not in live shoot mode yet.

Neither circumstance is exactly conducive to speedy healing (and there is the continuity issue to consider with the shoot in Japan) - I say if she needs time off to recover, she should be allowed some.

it needed surgery, so it's likely something was inserted into arm (that can be removed later on in another procedure if it becomes uncomfortable after it heals) the first few days after the surgery will be uncomfortable, woozy and nauseous from the anesthetics and pain medication. so probably best to stay put at home.

Wahhhh!

Two trucks, that sounds scary as hell.

Hope she recovers quickly (also from the trauma of having been in an accident) and her S.O. spoils her rotten meanwhile.

Don't care about the drama at all, people come first! (Hope the others involved in the accident are ok too!)

I'm glad it's nothing more serious. I hope she heals up fine and isn't to shook up from everything!
I think the cast and crew could probably take a break for a few days or just film other stuff.

I hope she gets feeling better soon!! And am very relieved that she wasn't more seriously injured.

But on the plus side maybe her incredibly handsome boyfriend, Lee Jin Wook, can take a little time to "tend" to her wounds. It'd be a lot easier to recover in bed if he was there with her. Just sayin.

Two trucks and only fractured arm and small wounds on face. GHJ's lucky! It could be much worse.
Get well soon, unni!
I think IOIL has been shot much earlier than many dramas so they will still have time to reschedule the shooting in Okinawa. YAS is only on 12 ep it means there's one month left before IOIL's premiere.

I'm a new fan of this drama. After finishing episode 3, I checked dramabeans.com articles about it. Thanks girlfriday and DB team for all these articles.

Just like to point out that perhaps the screenwriters are also checking this blog. Because your comment above, "so maybe they’ll have to invent an angry patient who attacks her or something" is what exactly happened in the drama.

Cool!
