Odds and Ends: Rescue ninja

javabeans: Thanks to our readers, we have some questions to use as jumping-off points for this edition of Odds and Ends. Which question shall we tackle first?

girlfriday: I like this really open-ended question: If you were a heroine in a drama, what would you do? Um, do about what?

javabeans: Like, in general?

girlfriday: That’s the question.

javabeans: Hm. Well, I suppose I would start by eating a healthy breakfast before heading out on my day of rotating part-time jobs. Was that not what the question was asking?

girlfriday: I would make sure not to tie my shoes, so that I wouldn’t miss an opportunity to trip and kiss-fall on the handsome chaebol who rides my bus.

javabeans: And I would make sure to end my day by getting rip-roaring drunk so that I could get piggybacked home by the handsome chaebol who is moonlighting as my taxi driver for market research purposes.

girlfriday: I would make sure that I had no doppelgangers.

javabeans: And how would one ensure that? Does this involve murder? Because I have a tip for that.

girlfriday: Maybe? That tip doesn’t come from Gap-dong, does it?

javabeans: What, is the murderer going to get all uppity about where her help comes from? Do you want to go to prison, or do you want freedom and kisses?

girlfriday: These are my options? What about the amnesia loophole? I’ll take that and a twelve-years-later reunion with my first love instead.

javabeans: How about this question: Are there shows where you thought the ending was actually better than the beginning? That’s not as common as the reverse, but I know it’s been known to happen. Say with Dream High, which ended up a lot more heartfelt and sweet than I’d expected going in.

girlfriday: GAKSITAAAAAAAAAL. That ending just wins.

javabeans: Miss Korea? The difference isn’t as drastic in this case, but I did think it progressed on a slow but steady incline.

girlfriday: Ooh, ooh! Return of Iljimae! Because it kind of starts out weirdly, and at first you’re like, who’s this weird narrator chick?

javabeans: And then she turns into the highlight because she’s so witty and snarky.

girlfriday: Yes! I loved her! She was my favorite thing about that drama (other than Iljimae, obviously) and I’ve never seen another drama where the narrator had so much presence and narrative power to make me laugh or care.

javabeans: Another one for me is Who Are You too, the older one with Go Ara and Yoon Kye-sang. It starts cute and goofy but rather uneven, but by the end I was SO emotionally invested and gripped by these characters and totally overcome with the poignancy. I do think the opposite question of which dramas tanked in the end is way easier to answer. But maybe that’s a question that doesn’t require us to answer.

girlfriday: Yeah it’s much more fun to come up with the rare examples where a drama goes out on a higher note than when it came in, since we’ve all lived through our share of tepid, careless, haphazard, or totally nonsensical endings. That’s not even counting the ones that make us angry.

javabeans: I’m so insulted when the dramas clearly just give up. If YOU couldn’t care enough to put together a decent ending, why should I care to watch it?

girlfriday: Right? Except it comes at the end, so you don’t know you’ve wasted 20 hours until that last hour comes around.

javabeans: Oh I haaaate when one bad episode sours the entire watching experience retroactively. You might think one bad hour is just one bad hour, but if that ending is where you were heading all this while, then I feel duped for having faith in you, God’s Gift.

girlfriday: Or, you could go the way of My Sassy Girl 2 and create a sequel that negates the premise of the universally beloved rom-com classic of your generation. You could do that.

javabeans: Aghhhhhhhhhhh why would you do that why why whyyyyy. I mean, it’s bad enough to create a sequel that will almost assuredly not live up to the original. That’s bad enough. But if you give Cha Tae-hyun a NEW sassy girl to fall in love with?! You’re ruining both the new movie and the old one! You have pissed in your own pool right from the start so ain’t no way I’m swimming there.

girlfriday: Is this really happening? Are they going to make this movie?

javabeans: Maybe it could work? Maybe it won’t be terrible? Maybe it will even be better than the original?

girlfriday: Maybe someone knows a ninja we can hire to break into the producer’s office, wipe every hard drive, and light every copy of the script on fire? Anyone up for the job?

javabeans: Not me, but I’d give money to that Kickstarter.

agree so much on Who Are You, i loved that drama, became a Go Ara fan. Soccer ball! Now it reminds me of the damn World Cop...CUP, though.

If I were a kdrama heroine, I would speak my mind, not depend on anyone, turn everything into a joke and kick life around, not let it kick me around. And I would end up with the second lead. If I am in the mood to end up with anyone. probably I´ll just ride into the sunset on my own. Gonzo power!

Ending better than beginning: You are beautiful. First episode was so blah.

my questions for next Odds and Ends would be the same: quote of the week, surprise of the week, disappointment of the week, most haunting image, what you have learned.

"You have pissed in your own pool right from the start so ain’t no way I’m swimming there." LOL

Someone needs to show this to the MSG2 movie producers. The mental image should be enough to make them stop.

As for the murdering tips, I remember your joke about Tae Moo in Rooftop Prince. How he's such a bad plotter that anyone he aims for is safe... and anyone in the vicinity is in danger!

If you're still taking questions for the next OAE post, how about: "If you're in a zombie apocalypse, which kdrama characters (from past dramas) would you want to have in your group?"

someone with brains. no, no - not for the zombies to eat! But to strategize. Maybe a group of seven - Anthony to take risks and rise as the winner, Jae Kyung - to murder the zombies and give them a speech that kills them twice over; Choi Ji-Hoon - the calm and collected; Baek yeo-Chi to shock them numb with her foul mouth (although I couldnt finish the drama); Do min Joon of course cause well duh. He´ll teleport the zombies into a library and their heads will explode. two more? Jang Eun-Bi. Her volleyball kick! And Cha Seung Won as himself, cause he just wins! His abs can survive nuclear attacks.

LOL redfox. Your answer made me think seriously about mine. Here it is:

Kim Seon Hwa (Kim So Yeon in IRIS)
Strength: Can take down everyone using anything.
Weakness: Kim Hyun Jun (Lee Byung Hoon in IRIS)
---
My Il Hwa (Song Jae Rim in Inspiring Generation)
Strength: IT'S SONG JAE RIM. DUH. But seriously, he can beat *almost* anyone in a fight.
Weakness: Jung Tae and scripted fights.
---
Badass Daddy from City Hunter
Strength: Can fight off lots of zombies and train an army of badass little kids.
Weakness: ????
---
Homeshopping Ahjusshi from City Hunter
Strength: Loyalty. Can cook lots of yummy food.
Weakness: 123-4567. That number again! 123-4567. But wait-- THERE'S MORE!
---
Hoon from Doctor Stranger
Strength: Shoulders. Vast medical knowledge. Can diagnose patients without medical equipment (useful when electricity runs out). Can double as puppy in the absence of actual puppies.
Weakness: Jae Hee/Seung Hee. Bad hair.

actually we should involve someone with lots of money as well. Gu Jun Pyo? and naturally we have to think about selling drama, movie and graphic novel rights, CF´s and souvenirs after we have beaten the zombies.
but did you mean real zombies or the ones sitting in front of big screen TV´s right now watching football?

Don't forget actors with fantastic fans who show their support with food trucks, snacks, cosmetics/moisturizers, and even clothes and winter jackets for all the drama staff and crew. Fighting zombies can be tiring. i.e.: Lee Minho, Jaejoong, Yoochun, Hyun Joong, Sukkie, Kang Sora, etc.

Now, would you want My Il Hwa or Killer Kim (also SJR)? How about BOTH? Between these two and Kim Sun Hwa I think the zombies would be the one needing someone to save them, haha.

on second thought, I´d be cautious with them killers. Let me switch Jae Kyung for Go Nam Soon, the best fighter, the jjang. ..... Now I don´t really need anyone else. Well, Nam Soon comes in a package with Heung Soo of course. He´ll be kept in a safe box because of his leg. and then everyone else can leave, except Cha Seung Won. Not for fighting either, just from GRABBING and feeling....never mind. It is very PG-rated for teenage zombies.

Just two

Yeon-jin and Sang-ho both from Girl K played by Han Groo and Kim Jung-tae. That way even if it was 8 billion to 3 as long as I was with those two we'd survive.

Well, definitely Kim Boong-do!
Can adapt to every situation, always keeps a cool head AND knows how handle his sword.

How apt that he's in the header for me right now :D

Can someone tell me if this is a drama, which one this is? Cause this sounds awesome :D

Well. This scene sounds like something from: Cheongdam-dong Alice; Scent of a Woman; Queen of Reversals; Her Legend; Bali; How to Meet a Prefect Neighbor; Cunning Single Lady. Now, take the word "research" out and it's in half of the KDramas. Leave the "chaebol" AND "research" out, keep the "piggybacked" in - and you get every single drama ever made.

Anyone ever notice how sexist these dramas are - how many times does the guy get totally smashed and then piggybacked home by the rich chaebol heiress moonlighting in a cheap bar?

LOL- Who would want to see that?! ^_^

Besides, let's be real- do you think a producer or a director or even a writer would think it'd be a good idea to have a 163 cm woman give a piggyback ride to a 180 cm man, who is 1.5 times her weight???

AmelDD, A K-Drama that I can watch over and over again? Flower Boy Ramyun Shop! So funny and sweet: awesome heroine and hero and great support characters too! I've watched it 3 times already and I will probably watch it again. Jung Il-Woo is a great actor and this lead me to begin watching ROI which I am enjoying currently. As much as I love Coffee Prince, City Hunter, Master's Sun, Heartless City - the list goes on and on.... FBRS is the only one I can watch over and over. Oh, yes loved Gumiho and Lee Seung-Gi, how can you not love that million dollar smile and dimples! Kyaaaa!

Why is the answer to every problem that anyone has to get falling down passed out drunk?

Has there ever been a drama made where people actually ATE the food in the expensive restaurant?

Why do none of those rotating part time jobs ever include such things as sewer cleaning, recycle plant sorter, or perhaps computer controlled master machinist jobs?

Wow Javabeans and Girlfriday thank you for taking my question last week!!
I asked that question just to ask you what would you do as kdrama heroine. As in given your own personality and character you can choose what kind of heroine you want to be. And I get hilarious answers now... LOL
(getting drunk in the middle of Seoul and meet handsome chaebol looks tempting)

If I was kdrama heroine I'll make sure to make acquaintance with every chaebol's son just in case I need them to hire me for works or if they need girlfriend/wife.... LOL. I would be smart but not necessarily nerd like Jang Hye Sung in IHYV.
And if it was a sageuk, I'll make sure to kill any evil politicians and queen/queen dowager before marry the king/hero.

Before becoming, as a prerequisite to being a drama heroine, I would get a curly perm and hide ALL of my flattering outfits.
I would somehow get my father or uncle or brother or mother into debt so *I* will have to pay it back.
I would take cooking classes because no matter what my other skills are, being able to cook my MAN something hot, tasty and reminiscent of his childhood is crucial.
I would loosen the heels on my shoes, take falling lessons, and put money away (hiding from my family and loan sharks) for my upcoming travel abroad that will most likely happen a year or two after meeting the chaebol mentioned above.
I would purchase the coolest newest phone, glasses, refrigerator, and pretend I have never been to an amusement park.

Then, I would step into my drama life.

Agreed. I still need Ki Dong Chan to be okay...in my universe he is.

But, the ending I have to erase, well the last 9 minutes, really...that honor goes to Gu Family Book. My mind is selectively remembering the good parts...*cough* Daddy-ho *cough*.

I just pretend that the whole drama was the first 2 episodes.

The next few episodes were good, but it went nowhere, and the ending... *sigh*

But the first 2 episodes were AWESOME!!!

2 more dramas that I-couldn't-believe-the-ending were "Can Love Become Money"- I thought the writer, director, and producer were replaced with someone who didn't understand the main characters, and Iljimae. I really did like Iljimae, but the ending was strange, especially for some of the characters.

You ladies are so funny! I love reading these segments and want to be your friend so badly :(

I just realized today while running errands that even though k dramas often seem like light, fluffy entertainment, they really play a crucial role in the Korean economy as a whole. They're like addictive advertisements for all things Korean. It's a brilliant business strategy, actually. I find myself (an American) being so much more open to buying stuff made by Korean companies, like Shin ramyun and Samsung appliances, after seeing them in k dramas. I obviously still consider the pros and cons of any purchase, but I'm much more willing to buy Korean products than I used to be, and I think k dramas have done so much to make Korean products more familiar and attractive to world consumers. Again, it's brilliant business strategy when you think about it!

It is so interesting that you posted this. I just bought a fridge, and purposely looked for Samsung online to see what I could get from them locally.

Although the dramas themselves go far in recommending SK as a country you want to visit, showing all the cool SK appliances - humidifyers, rice cookers, anyone? - must also be the goal of the producers.

They seem to drive all kinds of autos - not just SK, but I have been more open to Hyundai and actually bought one. (Have to say, though, wouldn't again.)

For such a small country, they sure have made themselves well known globally. I would be curious to know if dramas played a part in this.

Thank you for this post, ladies. I just watched possible the most frightening short ever, and I really needed the laugh. I never thought of what to do if I were the heroine-I think I tend toward villain territory, or adorable secondary romance in my thought process. Good Pointers.

I will try Return of Illjamae soon based on this account, too. [that is after I finish revisiting Cha Seong Won classics and a few others that are filling in as I wait for YAAS each week.]

Cheers! Happy Summer!

I think the only drama I have seen where the ending was better than the beginning was Conspiracy in the Court. While the beginning was great, the ending reveal blew my mind (it helped not knowing the history involved).

What's the point of live-action shoots and listening to viewers if we still get things that are the complete opposite of what we want (God's Gift)?

May as well pre-produce half of the drama before it airs then.

Personally, Gaksital was the opposite for me. The first couple of episodes were fantastic. Then everything started to go downhill from there.

I think My Sassy Girl 2: The Movie will die or at least be stuck in pre-production hell if Cha Tae Hyun drops out. Cha Tae Hyun should follow Lee Young Ae's footsteps and just drop the project.

Hmmmm.. if I was a Kdrama heroine, the first guy to arm grab me would get a knee in the family jewels.

Sly and Single Again would be a recent drama that I think got better the further along the story went.

Hire the Masters of Part Timers (Dong Ha and Soo Chul) to find all those My Sassy Girl 2 scripts and burn/delete em. It's like making a Coffee Prince 2 with Gong Yoo getting duped by a different gender bender girl. lol
