Jung Il-woo as prince by day, watchman by night

It only took forever (okay, maybe weeks), but we finally get a decent peek at our ghostbusting prince Jung Il-woo in his new summer fantasy sageuk The Records of a Night Watchman. The newest stills are from his first day on set as the lonely bad boy prince who lives outside the palace walls, and the other shots are from the poster shoot last week for Jung Il-woo and Yunho, dressed as ghost-fighting night watchmen.

The 20-episode supernatural drama stars Jung Il-woo as a “ghost-exorcising prince,” who is gifted with the ability to see ghosts. It’s in his royal bloodline since his father (played by Choi Won-young) was a night watchman and king before him. But the prince is said to live a lonely life away from the palace, harboring heartache and turning away from his duties as the legitimate heir to the throne.

He’s an interesting character who actually speaks to the ghosts around him. Aw, is it because he’s so lonely? He’ll even have a ghost who follows him around, played by the always funny character actor Go Chang-seok (Good Doctor, and a zillion other dramas and movies, including Hello Ghost where he was a ghost that followed Cha Tae-hyun around). He’s a minister who died opposing the ascension of Jung Il-woo’s illegitimate brother Kim Heung-soo, and continues to serve the prince even in the afterlife.

He’ll follow Jung Il-woo around in order to help him get his life back on track and stop being the prodigal son. That is going to be SO adorable. And in learning to listen to the joys and the sorrows of the people by experiencing them firsthand, the prince will eventually overcome his fears about leading a nation, and grow up. Okay, you’re starting to give me hope again, so don’t blow it with cheesy-looking dragon monsters, yeah? *thinks positive thoughts*

Night Watchman follows Triangle and premieres August 4.

U know, there's only one thing that doesn't have me freaking out over the start of this series...

Going to stay optimistic and hope this drama turns out awesome though! Because ahhh Jung Il-Woo needs a great project. And Go Chang-Seok is adorable. :'D Can't wait for him to be the father figure stalker ghost of cute.

He really does. I have been waiting for his career making role, since High Kick. He has all the right tools, but keeps getting stuck in bad situations.

If the drama does well, be prepared for the fans of a certain other participant to take all the credit, like they still do for the drama, where his role was even more minor.

Any critic will be met with cries of hater and being an anti, and just being on the drama thread, is already looking to be an headache. Poor JIL. I guess a rallying cry of Fighting is in order, for JIL and JIL fans.

On the bright side, at least Yunho is not the first lead.

(and please PLEASE don't let this drama turn into Gu Family Book, shaky worldbuilding, birdbrained second half writing and all. Oh and I hope the OTP has chemistry instead of looking like oppa-dongsaeng)

Like K-netizens said, Yunho is the epitome of SEXY and MANLY appeal. Especially in Japan, the general public (everybody) thinks he's cute/handsome and of couse his international fans.
Hope this drama turns out good. Fighting!

Contrary to what everyone believes, Japanese fans are not stupid.

Certainly not enough for it to be an excuse to keep Yunho's or Taecyeon's or any horrible idol actor's 'acting' career going on the basis of their looks alone.

What are you referring to when you said "contrary to what everyone believes"?
I NEVER said his looks got him the casting offer to be in this drama!!...He is a NOT a good actor. The reason why he got the second lead is because of his star power and popularity.
Not everybody, but A LOT of international fangirls think Yunho is cute and sexy. Check out facebook. His fangirls around Asia, Latin America, and Europe are fan-girling like crazy.

He can't act and that cannot be discounted just because of his look which to me is just subjective cos I don't find him handsome at all

It is little known, or at least not acknowledged that for the past couple of years K-pop, at least in Japan, has lost some of it's luster and may have peaked. Since the majority of these idols come from k-pop land, perhaps they are trying to diversify more. Unfortunately many simply don't have the acting talent, and Korea seems to be neglecting it's "real" actors in favor of idol star power.

The lifespan of idols in Korea is pretty short - the number of idol groups still in existence from just 10 years ago is pretty close to zero.

But just "pretty close" :D

And, coincidentally, Yunho's one of them *hehe* He's been in this business for 11 years now~~

TVXQ is one of the very few groups that have survived for long. I think Korea is over saturated with boy and girl groups, so only the best are surviving. Korea seems to have a thing against solo performers - I almost never see them on stage, though they do show up a lot on the charts and pretty common in drama OST's.

0

TVXQ survives in Japan because they speak the language well. But J-fans arent stupid, they care a lot about acting and not beautiful faces

0

Also that's not quite what K-netizens say about Yunho when he's acting, they usually grumble worse than we do about how awful he is as an actor.

In terms of looks, they do compliment about his sexy and manly appeal, but when it comes to acting, they said he is really bad.

"What universe is this?"...LOL
Wow, quite shocked at your comment! I've heard plenty of Cassies and non-Cassies talk about his sexy and manly appeal. Same thing goes for other kpop idols like TOP and Choi Siwon.

0

@snow
Also, it really does not matter what you think because in Korea, Yunho is KNOWN for sex appeal, great dancer, and charity work. You just personally disagree about his looks.

0

@Haley,
I disagree with everything about Yunho. :)

0

@snow - SHADDDDDDDDDDDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!

0

@snow - I'd say the mention of the word 'Cassies' indicates that we'e dealing with a fangirl here, that breed insists on clinging to the notion that Japan is crazy for oppa and that Japanese fans will excuse his horrible acting and watch just because he has a pretty face.

Like I said, Japan is not stupid, and like windsun says they're not even crazy for kpop anymore. I'm sure he's very nice and does lots of charity work and is considered good-looking but that doesn't change the fact that he's demonstrated a consistent lack of acting skill that basically proves that any role given to him is just an opportunity wasted, that could have been given to a slightly better actor (even an idol actor).

0

@pogo

No worries :) I'm sure Japanese fans have quality stuff to fawn over.

0

"I disagree with everything about Yunho"
LoL

@snow do u have personal issues with that guy? hahaha. u r the first one i met who really dislikes him. i've been into kdrama for god-knows-how-long. everyone criticizes his acting ability including me. i am fully aware how bad his acting is but i never heard people deny his sexy and manly appeal.
so what universe are you from?

0

hmmm...this site is the headquarters for yunho anti-fans. always the same old people. u know who u are.
can yunho act? nope. does he get hype/praise for dance moves & sexy-manly? duh! but not here on this site filled with antis. Japanese know he can't act, but why they still watch his drama..cuz he's "popular" they luv him as an idol...japs fangirls hav loyalty to tohosinki.

0

umm...no I think there are other men I prefer in the looks department so "epitome" would not be the right word but I certainly don't think he is ugly. He just isn't my cup of tea.

SEXY and MANLY is totally subjective, like the popular opinions here. He can be "Sexy and many" as much as he wants but I hope he delivers in his acting than being a mere Ken doll.

lol, Yunho looks so silly. I literally started laughing as I scrolled down and saw his face (and I actually like the guy as a person). For everyone's sake (but especially his), I hope his acting has improved this time around.

Why oh why he still offered drama roles when everybody know he can't act? I'm sure viewers will tune in no matter what if the story, acting, and directing are good. No need to cast idol.

Required fields are marked *

I'm sorry but it has nothing to do with wanting to be mean. He just can't act and many fans have shamelessly admitted that he is only in this drama because he is a famous person in Japan. How does that sound right to you?

Why do you think people should just accept this and if they don't then they are being "mean"?

Do you think it is right that this role that could have gone to someone with actual capabilities should be wasted on a person who does not have the correct set of skill?

I'm not knocking down his singing or his idol activities or his personal character. If so many people like him then he must have some very likeable qualities but decent acting isn't one of them. If this were dancing or singing then go for it! but oh wait....it is acting! He should have the fortitude to ask his management to arrange acting training before he is thrust into acting projects. I still remember the embarrassment that was HTTG. Go Ara wasn't great either but guess what? She actually improved. If he wants to do the same then he needs to dedicate time to acting otherwise he should quit hogging roles and wasting people's time.

So what if you think Yunho can't act? Is there a need to say it at every single post that involves him in the slightest? NO...therefore, I still stand by what I said about ppl just saying it now out of spitefulness...they're just angry that an actor that they think can't act got a role due to his popularity overseas....well that's too bad...cuz it's the truth...I'm in no way saying that Yunho is a good actor....but the fact that this drama WILL be sold overseas for a high price is a guarantee and that's not something that ppl should just look down upon...acting well doesn't matter if in the end, the show doesn't sell *shrugs*

not liking Yunho's acting doesn't equate to having to bash him at every turn which is a pattern I see by many ppl here...and alot of times it's the same ppl too.

the fact that you said "wasted", "hogging roles", "wasting ppl's time" is being mean in itself and just shows that you aren't looking at the bigger picture...by the way, this is only like his 3rd role in a show...so I think you're exaggerating by alot.

Unfortunately, due to his busy schedule he doesn't have time for acting lessons...he's too busy earning big bucks for his company and other ppl due to his POPULARITY....I acknowledge that's the main reason he's chosen for acting roles, but I commend him for that...there are TONS of actors that just sing for the sake of singing and they sound horrible...but fans of their acting don't constantly say negative things about them venturing out so I see it as a double standard.

In case you didn't notice, this website is called DRAMAbeans. It posts about Korean dramas and movies, in case you haven't noticed. So yes, every time Yunho's cast in something and it is mentioned here, people are going to bring up the fact that he can't act.

And as for the old chestnut about his 'busy schedule' being the reason Yunho is shit at acting because he can't take lessons.....that doesn't really account for the fact that equally busy idols, including his labelmates and two of his equally popular former groupmates, manage to not suck at acting even with equally busy schedules. And this is 'only his third role' in a show? I think a basic wiki would prove otherwise, he has a long history of sucking at acting and there are rookie idols who are better actors than him.

And btw, there is a massive flaw in your 'but actors do singing and don't get criticised for it!' logic. People here generally don't care about kpop or music. We're not paying attention to anyone's music, whether it's your oppa's our our oppa's, but if someone is acting badly in dramas we're well within our rights to say so. And it's beyond hypocritical to say that you think it's praiseworthy that Yunho gets roles for popularity alone when you know he sucks at acting.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Umm, what does dramabeans being a drama site have anything to do with ppl leaving mean messages about an idol turned actor? that doesn't even make sense -_-

by the way, if you're talking about Jaejoong and Yoochun, one of the main reasons they left SM years ago is BECAUSE of their crazy busy schedules where they felt as tho they weren't being compensated enough...they are obviously alot more free now and choose the projects they want to do...if you notice, they are able to do individual solo activities and focus on just that instead of Yunho who has to endure an actor's crazy filming schedule ON TOP of his schedule...alot of times even overseas where he would have to fly back and forth. Also, if you bothered to read carefully, I never said acting lessons would mean he would necessarily even become a much better actor....some ppl (like JJ and especially YC) are obviously more talented in acting NATURALLY from the get-go even without lessons.

Lol...don't generalize...I know many ppl who are fans of actors and they don't criticize their singing solely because they love them...not because they actually sound good or that they happen to not care about music OTL

why is it hypocritical? I've always been honest when I say that one of the main reasons they choose Yunho to be in dramas IS because of his popularity overseas.

It's sad that ppl like you (you're one of the ones that I was talking about in my past post that are constantly out to criticize YH on a constant basis just to be mean) are so disensitized to nasty comments that you just accept it as okay and give an excuse of it as just stating an opinion....there are many ways to get your point and feelings across without being mean and being really into dramas and not being a fan of someone's acting is not a good enough excuse to spread so much hate against another human being regardless of how much you think they suck at acting.

0

@sheils

Just a question, but how does pointing out that Yunho can't act and shouldn't be cast in dramas anymore constitute as "hating" and being nasty.

Unlike you, a lot of us do not care about Yunho outside of what we see in dramas, and what we see is bad. As fans of dramas, and as fans of actors in these dramas, we're sad when a terrible actor gets cast, and so we express that.

It's as if a singer that was terrible at singing--like, had one of the worst voices in Korea, or had the worst dancing skills, or whatever--decided to release a song with Yunho. I'm sure his fans would complain, and they would be justified in doing so.

It's no different than drama fans complaining that an idol who has time after time proven that he doesn't really have a place in dramas shows up once again.

0

@Rory

Some comments are okay, but others definately cross the line...and I'm talking mainly about those ppl that do..especially ones that love to bash Yunho every single opportunity they get....there are certain ppl here that are being mean-spirited just for the sake of it and I'm just pointing that out.

Again, ppl need to stop and look at the bigger picture...it's not just about the acting...if it were, then there would be no point in casting idols-turned-actors at all...but as a drama fan, I'm sure you've noticed that it's happening more and more often now because of the benefits they bring....so the singer comparison doesn't really work.
