Yoon-ah out of Nodame Cantabile remake

The internet has spoken: Yoon-ah will not be taking the lead role in the Korean adaptation of Nodame Cantabile, which by the way is operating under the working title Cantabile Romance. (I suppose it makes sense, since Nodame is the Japanese character’s name and will probably change for a Korean drama.)

According to Yoon-ah’s management, she turned down the Cantabile Romance role in order to consider other projects instead. To that end, she will be taking to the big screen with a Korean-Chinese co-production called Goodbye Ani, a romantic comedy in which she plays the lovable title character of Ani (Annie? Ahni?).

That sounds a lot like a nice way to spin that they had to backpedal out of the Cantabile Romance project, but you know, if it gets us a better Nodame, let them save all the face they want. This is exactly why the media’s casting-announcement song and dance operates the way it does; as much as I find it frustrating to get so many hesitant or incomplete announcements (“The actor is considering, it’s not final, there’s a verbal agreement, but there’s no contract, it might happen maybe”), this allows for people to test the waters without feeling like they’re losing too much if they have to shift gears.

This news is not too surprising but I’m relieved just the same, because I did wonder if production company Group Eight and broadcaster KBS would forge ahead and insist on Yoon-ah’s casting no matter how fans felt about it. But fan response to the news was fairly negative all across the board, so I have to assume the producers decided to change course rather than deal with that wave of resistance. I don’t think the tone of the reactions to Yoon-ah’s possible casting was too terrible, in that the responses weren’t furiously or viciously negative; it’s just that that seemed to be a blanket feeling of disappointment or dubiousness. Even the more positive responses tended to go in the direction of “She’s fine, but not right for this character.”

Now that Nodame’s up for grabs again, can I be cautiously optimistic again? Can we try someone like Lee Yubi? How much bribery would it take to lure Park Bo-young back to dramas?

I think Ha Yeonsoo was great at playing oddball Sohee in Monstar, but I don't really see her playing the kind of oddball Nodame is.

For me personally, I'd love Lee Chohee to be Nodame. She was in Born To Sing, Wonderful Days, and currently in Flower Grandpa. She's got great comedic timing and would really nail the crazy Nodame antics.

I saw news on K-media trying to throw some names again.. Sigh.

Why don't they just list down all the actresses in Korean than, from child actress to upcoming actress to noona actress!

What's the use of throwing more names because it will end up with fan-war and dissatisfaction all over again.

Lee Ha Na
Ha Yeon Soo
Chun Woo Hee
Kim Go Eun

I called it. That once they saw the across the board negative reaction from around the world, they would back pedal. Even though SM likes to show horn their way, no matter what, seeing her being dragged for filth all over the place, would not sit well with them. They have to sell us the beloved, darling image (despite the low rating of her dramas). Now they will act like it was their choice, but like JB said, if that's what they need to do to save face, go for it. At least the drama is back on track - somewhat.

LOL I feel like we're the only people on DB who like her. In the dramas I've watched her in I've never had a problem with her. And I can be be very picky and critical when it comes to actresses.
I've taken a break from Doctor Stranger because I've been really busy and I'm watching too many dramas at the moment anyway, but where I left it I was still rooting for her to end up with LJS (no spoilers please). And I'm actually a fan of Kang So Ra. Well I was, her character started to annoy me in the drama.

I don't think she fits the role of Nodame either, but i'd be willing to give it a chance just to see her finally get her happily ever after with Joo Won. Gaksital feels will never go. Oh, the heartbreak! :(

LOL that Yoona pic you chose is pretty awesome JB! And yea sure, whatever they need to say to make it look like it wasn't because of an overwhelming negative response that she's out.

I'm wondering who they'll court now. Technically, already two actresses have rejected the role.

Required fields are marked *

It's a shame she received the backlash she did. Yes, I know the role is important and the audience need a better actress etc. whatever. It doesn't guarantee the Remake will be up to par or what the original drama's fans want. Plus, with all the negativity and media play from the production side, I hope she didn't take it to heart. If she knows of it. Celebrate if you must...

Which is not to say I wanted this drama for her or have any reaction to this news. I just hope the movie role she chose instead is a better fit for her and she proves herself somewhat. Good luck Yoona!

Required fields are marked *

I'm generally not a fan of Internet negativity, but in this case it served a purpose. The reaction was so strong it almost immediately shut down a potentially terrible casting choice. I don't see why the producers should have kept with that choice just to protect Yoona's feelings.

As for her reading comments about it, I'm sure she's seen some of them. But part of being a celebrity in SK (and anywhere) is learning to put up with the negative comments along with the fervent adulation. And most of the comments I saw were not personal "anti" comments, just problems with her acting skills, which is completely legit.

No. The actress chosen needs to be able to act.

Nodame never sings (and if she did, I'm sure she would be as off-key as can be), and her piano-playing can be faked through using a stand-in.

Musical talent is irrelevant in this role, acting talent is crucial.

I feel bad for Yoonah in the sense that it can't be easy for her to witness such a vocal reaction to her potential casting.

The "testing the waters" like this wasn't a nice move from the production company (it's quite coward to be honest); although I also think actors/actresses should be self-aware about their own talent and know which roles to consider.

The internet's negativity: well, most of it wasn't against her personally, nor about her in acting in general, but about her suitability for this role – which I think is fair enough. I'm sure there were some unwarranted, nasty comments as well, but thick skin is needed in this business for sure.

Also, anyone familiar with Chun Woo Hee? She looks alot like Ueno Juri: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nJSR3I4yXg0/T_y_0p3bTpI/AAAAAAAAJj4/3-PLFjzhHEc/s1600/01100400000007201_1.jpg

I'm so with you on this one! I'm also following Marriage Not Dating and Han Groo is one heck of a revelation. Tbh, I had no idea who she was prior to the drama, but man, she's really nailing her character and I seriously think she has whatever it is that the Nodame role calls for.

Required fields are marked *

Marriage Not Dating is a not a helpful indication of Han Groo being suited to the role.

I have not seen HG in anything else, so I don't know if she has the talent for a complex character like Nodame, but MND is a pretty typical K rom-com, and HG's character typical rom-com heroine. If they make Nodame anything like Jang-mi, we'll get that K-adaptation that will just ruin Nodame.

Then again, the decision to retitle to "Nodame Romance" is already signalling the wrong focus and wrong things...

X_X

0

Required fields are marked *

But I believe you are wrong... Marriage not dating is not the "Standard rom-com" it's a rom-com that goes against what the norm is.... Although she is the heroine that wants to get married, she's not the happy guppy that most female protagonists are.. Having seen Nodame I believe Han Groo is someone who could contend for the role (even if she might not be an exact fit) she seems to be an oddball and of beat character, which is what Nodame is (even if she has deeper emotions). I think for this role even if we all want a familiar face, the win would be to get someone like Han Groo that people don't know well, so their not biased but also we all know the person needs to have real acting ability. I think we mostly can't role out someone who is not widely known, we need to give them a chance...

Now if we think about retitling the drama that is no indication that they are leading toward somewhere wrong, it just indicates that for the Korean version they can't keep the Japanese title, because it would make no sense to keep the original one... We need to see this production as a separate entity, one who will be produced in another country and will be marketed for a different audience, not one who is targeting the same thing as the original.

How is she not like other k-drama heroines? I find her character pretty standard (the way she pursues guys, the way she interacts with them, the bickering with the hero, the way she's 'inferior' - messy, noisy, too straightforward, sloppily dressed, with 'lesser' job* – to the second female lead etc). I would say she's a cross between the girl from Mischievous Kiss (fixated on the one love in life) and My Sassy Girl (obnoxiously full of herself, doing whatever the hell she wants).

And take out the guys in the story of MND, and there's no character left. Her character is defined by the existence of males that she can pursue (or that can pursue her). Nodame has a life of her own, she'd live happily ever after by herself too. If you take a look at the second characters in MND, they are completely cookie cutter too.

But as I said, I'm not saying I have problem with Han-groo per se, I haven't seen her in anything else so she might well have the talent. Just that MND isn't a convincing argument for me. Also, I don't necessarily want a familiar face. I would take a complete newbie if they can find someone in an audition that has the demonstrated talent.

Someone suggested (on another thread) making the Korean Nodame a Japanese exchange student. That way they could keep her name. We've had Korean dramas too with Japanese names (Japanese born or half-Japanese characters, e.g. in Someday). Now, they might not want to go that way (understandable), but they could have come up with a rename that doesn't involve "romance" – it's that part that implies what their focus is going to be.

*I don't think they have made the 'ugly' argument yet, not explicitly anyhow

i thought nodame was so chiaki-obsessed? That's pretty much like any typical k-drama heroine, no?

0

Yes, you are correct to say that she is obsessed with Chiaki, but she absolutely isn't obsessed in the way any K-drama heroine I have ever seen was. She doesn't change any of the habits and behaviours that Chiaki loathes (there is no make-over). If I had to sum it up in a sentence, it's basically if anyone waved a sandwich in front Nodame's nose, she'd abandon Chiaki in a nanosecond (until of course he pulls out a steaming plate of pasta).

Plus, if she had never met Chiaki, she'd have happily lived her life too. (Their meeting does of course change them, but the essences of their characters are not defined by each other.)

0

"pretty typical K rom-com and HG's character typical rom com heroine"

ARE YOU FREAKIN' KIDDING ME ? There are so much wrongs in that sentence, I can't even ...
Do you even watch the drama because it's impossible that you can say such a thing if you did. Or maybe you watched wrong O.O

Seriously, JangMi is nothing like the poor/naive/kind/quiet typical romcom heroine. She is kind and helpful yeah but she doesn't stay quiet especially when people are stepping on her. Like when the mother of Hon Dong trashed her, she answered back. The same when Ki Tae's mom slapped her for telling the truth, she replied that she can't be as hypocrite as her and hide her sincere feelings.
As for the drama, although it uses the rom com formula, it's not that typical because of the writing and the characters.

But seriously, I really can't believe you said that ...

Alua, totally agree with your take on HG character in MND. I am enjoying watching the drama, but to me her character is a variant of JD from BOF.

0

Wow, I'm not the ONLY not feeling her character. She leaves me blank. From what I saw in ep 1 I'm not sold on anything of this girl. She reminds me of the girl from Bride of the century (which I drop) she start out strong, but when she do falls for the lead she will be a weak lead (K-Drama formula). Heck even her character now irritates me, I will not continue watching. Oh well, FTLY has really ruined other dramas for me, it reminded me why I loved them in the first place, hard to find a show in which I'm loving both leads equally.

0

@m I didn't managed to get through more than two episodes of BOF....

@True2U – there were a few of us not feeling her (check last Friday's Open Thread). I don't think it helped how they portrayed her as a criminal stalker in ep 1. She was slightly better in ep. 4, but then even her outspokenness is primarily when she is drunk (speaking her mind with the ex, with Ki Tae's mom) – which is usually when K-drama heroines do outrageous things.

Haven't seen Bride of the Century, but by the sounds of it, better to stay away!

0

@Alua Bride of the century female lead really isn't that back. I actually loved her it was the writers that did a (180 to me with her character). My only problem with her was when she finally fell for the lead, She lost the spice that I loved (wish is what Dramaland do to these strong heroin). but if you're like me and hate when a strong lead becomes weak after falling in love then maybe, just maybe you might not like this one. But my sister loved it, she said love can do things to people (I can understand that) but sometimes I want love to empower these women not turn them into love sick idiots.

0

watch her in Girl K, that awesome 3-episode Action drama in 2011 that was highly recommended by JB (i think it has recap here). Watched it and i've been a fan eversince.

I really love the drama Marriage not Dating. I hope they would be able to maintain her quirkiness till the end. She can stand her own to the veteran Kim Hae-sook. Can't wait for the next episode. I think the Mom will root for her soon.

Also, i hope someone will recap the drama here soon =)

I love Joo Won just as much as his other die hard fans who sat through Civil Servant .
And I am not saying he ain't great at picking projects coz come on, Gaksital!!!

But I feel like he picks something up that looks good on paper, say Good doctor where I admit he, not the show, was brilliant and Nodame is no different.
Remakes of popular TV shows will definitely bring in the ratings and may sometimes even be better than the original, see FTLY(my humble opinion), but Nodame IS a standard that cannot be achieved. It is a prime goddess in dramaland and you don't just re-do that. That's just wrong.

Oh again I am not sure how much power he has in selecting projects because I am sure all this agency nonsense will be in the picture too. I do respect, love and obsess over him as an actor and this is in no way demeaning to him. I just feel that it is demeaning to the show if there is a remake.

Sorry if all that sounded foolish and silly. I am just extremely annoyed with the idea of destroying a classic.

Yes, she will magnanimously take yet another lead role to 'help' KBS by either smiling cutely or looking wooden for 24 eps.....

......and then she will sign another drama while Nodame is in live shoot and take of f to film that.

But Oppa will like that.

Oppa tired of filming all night and need a happy virus.

She's a happy virus, known to be positive person on set and easy to work with which is good for a long tiring hours of drama filming.

Errrr and why are we keep mentioning her name here.. Aigooooooo.

I felt bad for Yoona because of the media-play she got unnecessary hate from k-netizens and i-netizens alike.

i know. i wish people gave her a chance.

people had doubts with the leads of hana yori dango when they were casted but they were great in that drama. even ueno juri's casting as nodame was not without a fuss but she's proven the naysayers wrong.

i actually like yoona because her perfect girl next door image, her variety persona, and her roles are all different. she gets less credit for her acting than she does but when you look at screencaps of her projects, you can differentiate the characters.

other actresses get praised for their acting even when they have declared that the role is exactly like their real self. how is that acting when they are essentially just playing themselves?!

anyway, this adaptation will be a dud not just because of the history of lackluster adaptations already existing but because of the production team, and the title change.

nodame cantabile was never about romance, it was about nodame and music first, and the ensemble cast second

Nice job SM Ent... To avoid 'humiliation' because of the massive news on her casting earlier, they gives us this news of Yoona and Chinese movie out of nowhere!!!

SM Ent know, that official announcement will be made tomorrow, 15 July 2014, and they counter it with this news first. Seems like Yoona the one who rejected it, and not the other way around.

Goodluck to Yoona.

I just hope the casting will be worth waiting. Please cast a suitable 20something actress.

Why do I have this feelings that it will end up to Jin Seyeon.. I dunno, just my feel that it is possible.. Ooohhh please no. JSY need to take a time off and learn more acting. You are sweet girl but I don't want to see you in this one girl..

Peace.

Yoona and SM were the one rejecting it. They saw the backlash their golden girl got so they got her out of this mess. If Yoona wanted really bad she would still go it.

But they needed an excuse why she backed up( they didn`t want to say it it`s cause of backlash) so that`s why they pulled out the movie casting news.

But it`s very obvious it was her that declined the role and not other way around. SNSD image is more important to her than anything and she didn`t want any negative attention.

For me this is the third great news. Nothing better than Germany's victory in World Cup 2014. And their goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, wins Golden Glove. Very well deserved. That was the greatest news for today.
#DFBTeam #WorldCup #GERARG

My comment about WC2014 must be out of place. But still... I can't hold on but spreading my excitement. Have a nice day! Wish 'Nodame remake' all the best! ^^

Don't get too excited before they secure the lead female, beannies...
Remember that every time an actress bow out of a project, there is always Jin Se Yeon to substitute her. *facepalm*

As much as Yoonah not taking this role is good news, I personally have no confidence / hope that KBS will cast someone more suitable / qualified.

The mere fact that they were even making an offer to Yoonah is discouraging because they were going for name rather than acting talent needed. They might try a little harder now with the outcry over this, but then I think they haven't cast the right person for the male lead either (plus all those other questionable decisions that they've been making)...

Kim Seul Gi. I think she'll rock the role too. But she doesn't have the star power, which those broadcasting station always believe translates to ratings.

Declined or Rejected?

Please let it be 20 something actress for Joo Won this time.

I would love to see him pairing with young actresses like Park Bo Young, Lee Yubi, Baek Jin-hee in his drama..

Tomorrow will be the official announcement for the drama casting

Im Joo Eun! She should play Nodame! I read that she's looking for her next project and she just had a cameo appearance in "Endless Love".

I'm so relieved with these news! Seriously, I'm so glad Yoona is out!
