Yoon-ah out of Nodame Cantabile remake

The internet has spoken: Yoon-ah will not be taking the lead role in the Korean adaptation of Nodame Cantabile, which by the way is operating under the working title Cantabile Romance. (I suppose it makes sense, since Nodame is the Japanese character’s name and will probably change for a Korean drama.)

According to Yoon-ah’s management, she turned down the Cantabile Romance role in order to consider other projects instead. To that end, she will be taking to the big screen with a Korean-Chinese co-production called Goodbye Ani, a romantic comedy in which she plays the lovable title character of Ani (Annie? Ahni?).

That sounds a lot like a nice way to spin that they had to backpedal out of the Cantabile Romance project, but you know, if it gets us a better Nodame, let them save all the face they want. This is exactly why the media’s casting-announcement song and dance operates the way it does; as much as I find it frustrating to get so many hesitant or incomplete announcements (“The actor is considering, it’s not final, there’s a verbal agreement, but there’s no contract, it might happen maybe”), this allows for people to test the waters without feeling like they’re losing too much if they have to shift gears.

This news is not too surprising but I’m relieved just the same, because I did wonder if production company Group Eight and broadcaster KBS would forge ahead and insist on Yoon-ah’s casting no matter how fans felt about it. But fan response to the news was fairly negative all across the board, so I have to assume the producers decided to change course rather than deal with that wave of resistance. I don’t think the tone of the reactions to Yoon-ah’s possible casting was too terrible, in that the responses weren’t furiously or viciously negative; it’s just that that seemed to be a blanket feeling of disappointment or dubiousness. Even the more positive responses tended to go in the direction of “She’s fine, but not right for this character.”

Now that Nodame’s up for grabs again, can I be cautiously optimistic again? Can we try someone like Lee Yubi? How much bribery would it take to lure Park Bo-young back to dramas?

Kim Seul-Gi for me. I can see a little bit of Nodame in her (the oddness, the quirkiness). But I don't think they will offer her the role. And even if she was offered, she'd most likely turn it down because as I can remember she's already signed for other drama.

I've got memories of Joo Ji Hoon in Antique Bakery running through my mind right now and would've liked to see him in the role of Chiaki - albeit an older one.

But anyway, this is the one project in which I would've liked to see a cast of fresh or relatively obscure faces instead. At least it would mitigate some of the complaints lodged at the list of potential actors and lift some of the pressure off the cast - especially the lucky or unlucky one (take your pick) who lands the role of Nodame. Obviously there would be less star power, but I wonder which popular and/or talented actress would even DARE to touch the role of Nodame...

I must be missing something here, but I watched Nodame Cantabile and I don't know what is so great about it. Nodame is needy, clingy, and her whole life revolves around the guy. The guy Chiaki walks around with a blank mopey face for the entire series, and people keep helping him and being loyal to him for no reason.

There was no point or message to the story. It was tedious and just...there. (But the music was beautiful though, that's the only thing that kept me sane while watching this dreck).

Did you really watch it? Sorry, finding it hard to believe if that's all you get out of the drama.

Her life doesn't revolve around Chiaki at all. On the surface yeah, she's clingy but actually she's the one who rejects him more than once.

Her life did revolve around the guy. She walked around severely depressed for 2/3 of the show because Strezemann told her she couldn't be with Chiaki or something. The only reason she decided to do the piano competition was to be "on the same level" as Chiaki and to make money so she could go study abroad with him. This show was easily the worst Asian show I've ever seen.

Actually, a lot of people didn't like the show. Not everyone has to enjoy childish and dumb shows like that.

I read the manga and watched the anime and totally loved the series however, I did not like the jdrama version. I have to agree with alexis, windsun33, redfox, and all the other people who did not enjoy the jdrama. Opinions are opinions for a reason. We all can be mature and agree to disagree.

0

Okay. Sure. Universally acclaimed and award winning drama being called dreck, dumb, childish and worst drama ever. Your opinion is in the minority. Let's just leave it at that and move on.

0

@lemondoodle - you seem to have trouble playing well with others, so perhaps a discussion forum where different opinions are welcome is not your forte.

Did you watch just the 11 episode drama? There were two specials and two movies of it as well. I think once they had their own separate careers and relationship turmoil, they had great character development...at least that's how I saw it. I think you just need to analyze the characters a bit more.

Puh-leassee, if you really want clingy then go watch Taiwanese drama, Fall in Love With Me LMAO. The amount of clingyness is so cringe and frustrating, literally im only watching it for the main guy bc he's hot. Nodame is not even that clingy, plus they spend a lot of time apart and finding themselves in the movies.

I watched most of it - never finished it. So though while it was popular, not everyone liked it.

I thought it got pretty silly after the first 3 or 4 episodes, and never got past ep7 at all.

It was far from my favorite J-drama.

Nodame made chaiki smile and widened his world a lot. and her impulsiveness opened up his perfecto shell
and Nodame just dived with passion into everything. everything just involved Chaki too. but she had her own dreams and she had meaningful relationships with many people. she was the initiator to many things and her impulsiveness kinda triggered changes.

you seem really dim-witted if you didnt see it.

The phobia thing I can accept, but I did find it weird that a girl who is totally 4D would pick up a book from a store to hypnotise a guy and cure his phobia. Just because she wants "to help him". Ain't that a ray of sunshine to all the psychotherapists out there?

Nodame's not stupid. She did hesitate about trying the watch hypnosis trick on Chiaki, saying laymen shouldn't mess with stuff like this. But she knew she couldn't leave it to rest after she saw how Chiaki put his whole heart and soul into the Brahms symphony. He shouldn't be confined to Japan, and she understood that.

I think neither of them expected that trick to work well, but for Nodame, it was still worth a shot. And remember, it wasn't an instant cure-all. Chiaki was still terrified of getting onto a plane - but the fact that he even managed to get onto one was nothing short of a miracle.

0

It isn't about stupidity aspect, but rather totally not in norms of reality. No matter how much you justify Nodame's acts it still doesn't strike a chord with the aspect of hypnosis.
After Chiaki reached Hokkaido, he starts buying crabs and all the stuff Nodame wanted. I mean it doesn't make sense. She is a prodigy in music. I haven't seen any kind of self-help out books for hypnosis.
All in all, the bonding aspect was sweet, but the way it was played out in the drama was very unrealistic. Anime was much better.

0

Aww, c'mon, it was for the laughs. I seriously don't think Nodame thought it would work like a charm - she still had to refer to the book while she was doing the trick, I'm pretty sure she had very little clue as to how it would all pan out. That it did somewhat help was, I think, more a stroke of good fortune than anything else.

The crabs part was hilarious because it was so out there, but surely nobody will take this to be something that people do for real to snap out of a childhood phobia.

I didn't really care for the anime, to be honest. Though it's fine if you think it's better.

0

So don't be pessimistic for a Korean remake. As much as the writer is planning to do based it on the manga-ka who knows we might have a few laughs based on the Korean culture.
I am wondering how they are gonna do the kotatsu scene, though that is truly Japanese.
All remakes aren't that bad. Witch's romance based on My Queen was priceless. The writer had given a proper writing based on what is applicable for the Koreans though the structure or narrative was based on the Taiwanese version.
All in all rather than ranting do yourself a favour and be positive. Ranting and criticising on what is already decided is not gonna change.

0

They cast Joo Won for Chiaki, which is ugh. And then actually considered Yoona for Nodame - double ugh. They're also changing the names. It's hard not to be pessimistic and annoyed.

Seriously, they should drop the idea of a remake.

0

Yoona go for "Two Faces of My Girlfriend" remake! Honestly I think her acting is average just a little below of being a natural. I want to see her in a darker role.

Having a remake is always a bad idea. They should just cancel the remake. Boys Over Flowers, They Kiss Again, & To The Beautiful You were horrible remakes. I have stayed away from those productions as a result and I will most likely stay away from this one as well. It's hard to capture the essence of J-Drama and adapt it into a K-drama.

I don't know what they expected, though. Is perception among industry people and fans so very different?

Hopefully they trust their guts, though- casting people have a job for a reason. Fans don't necessarily know what's best.

I wish they'd let the manga author have a hand in picking the actors and production process, kinda like what they're doing with the new Sailor Moon anime that is out. The original manga creator has a say in everything they do with the show. Then again, it'd probably take a longer time for the show to come out and finish if they did that.

I just hope that the casting goes to people who have the acting ability on par with that of the Japanese version, and if they can't make it as good as the original, at least it will be a Korean adaptation of the Japanese, not an attempt to outshine the Japanese, which will be impossible. We hardcore Cantabile's lovers are hard to please, indeed.
And I'm relieved as well Yoona or whoever thought better of the role turned down the offer. She has an okay acting skill, but as we all know, Nodame-chan is a music prodigy with one of a kind character, and portraying her even in any kind of cultural background will be no picnic.

i know the Chiaki character's been cast but I thought the guy who played the lead in Witch's Romance (a TW drama remake coincidentally) would be an interesting Chiaki. I think he can pull off the serious, obsessive-compulsive yet quirky funny Chiaki.
For Nodame, it would be interesting to me if Moon Geun Young could play her, I'd like to see her try her her skill at playing a very quirky character like Nodame.
I admit I do not know a lot of Korean actors so and
I don't know the ones that have been posted here.
But I too am very glad it won't be Yoona :-)

People like Nodame for her crazy, weird, funny ways and Chiaki is just another sullen-faced intriguing guy we all want to love...
I'm okay with Go Ara. Park Bo-young would be fantastic but would she even consider it? She's like one of those actresses who crossed over to the movies and seems not too keen on going back to TV.
