Fated To Love You: Episode 17

As the line between what Gun says and what he actually means becomes more blurred in this hour, it’s no wonder that Mi-young and anyone else in this dramaverse has trouble understanding why he’s keeping the one most precious to him at arm’s length. It’s an hour that calls for more patience and waiting, but just when it feels like this show will continue to move at a snail’s pace until the finish line, there’s a light at the end of this tunnel that suggests the payoff might come sooner than later.

Joseon Gunman led the ratings pack at 10.8%, followed by Fated To Love You at 9.9%, and It’s Okay, It’s Love rounding out the line-up 9.1%.

EPISODE 17 RECAP

At the revelation that Gun was the face behind Lee Young-ja, Mi-young asks how he could think of pulling such a mean prank on her. Does he know what it took for her to forget him after all these years?

A long, silent moment passes before Gun gives his answer, minimizing his intentions as mere curiosity about his now-successful ex-wife, and as interest in buying a painting he liked. It was Mi-young who made things complicated when she contacted him about it.

Although astounded by his audacity to blame her for this situation, Mi-young swallows back her tears as best she can to ask if he meant the comforting and supportive words he told her. Gun apologizes, laughing — that was all fake.

“Do you know who Young-ja was to me?” Mi-young returns, looking thoroughly hurt. “I thought, ‘I met someone who completely understands me,’ ‘I met someone who understands my paintings.’ How consoling that was… how thankful I was.”

But Gun says the only thing he has to apologize for is his fake identity. His laughter that follows spurs her to remark how he’s become the worst in these past three years, which he affirms in a whisper. “You’re quite pathetic, Kim Mi-young,” he continues with a heavy sigh. “How could you not have changed at all in the past three years? You’re deceived by others easily and trust them so well, like a fool. When will you correct that habit?”

Gah, those words sound so hurtful at face value, and yet the cadence in Gun’s voice also holds some genuine wonder of how Mi-young hasn’t changed in his eyes. Still, he points to that painting of his silhouette in heart-shaped lollipop as evidence of her lingering feelings for him.

He’ll give back the Keddongie painting before he goes, though: “I don’t know how precious or how much this painting means to you, but to me… it’s just one painting.”

And that’s the last straw for Mi-young, who snatches back her painting. She orders him to get out (in banmal, at that), and he obeys without another word. Her knees buckle under her after he leaves. She clutches the Keddongie painting tightly, then takes down the painting of Gun and turns it away.

Gun reflects upon Mi-young’s words on the staircase outside her studio, but little does he know that Daniel, who has come by to check in on Mi-young, sees him sitting there and leaving.

It rather seems like Gun isn’t paying attention during his company meeting, given how his eyes are closed during the PPL presentation. But it’s apparent that Gun hasn’t missed a word when he’s prompted for his opinion, and he approves of working with an online beauty site in China.

Daniel arrives at Mi-young’s studio the next day, surprised at seeing her packing up her things. She apologizes for not keeping her promise to stay in Korea until her art exhibition is over because she wants to return to France. She reveals that the buyer of that “le soupir” painting turned out to be none other than Gun.

Gun is well into his fourth bottle of sake at dinner with Se-ra, where he informs her how her mother recently came to see him. She apologizes for that, and he asks with a sigh, “It’s hard for you, isn’t it? Being friends with me?”

Se-ra denies it, but Gun gently says they should stop being friends, too. She should move on and be happy, words that clearly scare her. After downing another shot, Gun says drunkenly, “No matter how hard you try, no matter how much you kick and struggle, you can’t force something that just wasn’t meant to be.”

Mi-young’s line of handbags and other merchandise is a rousing success, though she’s sorry to be leaving so soon. She’s invited to attend a celebratory event at Gun’s company for their recent collaboration, which she agrees to consider.

Mi-young sits down with Ji-yeon when she pays a visit to the studio. It’s cute how happy Ji-yeon is about her friend’s success, and encourages Mi-young to become one of her match-making clients soon. She asks if it’s weird if she were to pair Mi-young up with Gun, because Grandma Wang keeps asking for girls who look just like her.

That’s news to Mi-young, since she believes Gun is with Se-ra. But her friend crosses out that notion—Gun’s been single for the past three years. She asks if Ji-yeon is certain that Gun is unattached.

Daniel finds Se-ra lingering outside of his apartment, and the two sit outside to share a beer together. She explains that she was dumped by Gun today, and now they’re not even friends anymore. Daniel considers the idea of cleanly cutting ties with one another as a good thing, and Se-ra sighs at how “they” are amazing.

She admits that she told lies in order to break Gun and Mi-young apart, but Gun’s feelings for Mi-young persisted, even though she was the one who was by his side and knew about his illness.

Daniel asks what she means by an illness—what happened to Gun three years ago? How does that affect why Gun and Mi-young broke up? So Se-ra tells him of Gun’s noble idiocy act, of how he pushed Mi-young away so that she wouldn’t have to suffer because of his illness. Would Mi-young still stay with Daniel if she learns of this?

Gun looks over his will at home, the contents of which outlines the financial support to Mi-young and her family. Everything recorded there would, of course, remain a secret from Mi-young herself. He checks in with Keddongie, asking if he’s doing well with his mother.

Mi-young discovers a note from Gun/Young-ja tucked into a corner of the Keddongie painting. In it, Gun writes of how happy he was to think of the brightest and most precious time in his life thanks to this painting, and how he won’t forget her despite returning this work to her.

Comparing the chat log with Gun/Young-ja filled with words of encouragement and sympathy to the words Gun spoke to her in person, Mi-young wonders aloud: “How could all this be fake?”

Mi-young and Daniel take a break after a friendly race in the park, where she thanks him for the new sneakers. He says he regrets buying them for her, citing the superstition that giving shoes as a present means that one’s lover will leave them. They laugh over it, though Daniel looks concerned.

Gun intently listens to the audio recording of his will, his own voice dictating how he’d like Manager Tak to run Jangin Chemicals (and promote Yong) should he ever lose his memory in the future. His voice emphasizes that Mi-young should never, ever learn of his condition even if something tragic were to befall upon him.

He has another condition to add to his already extensive list of demands, asking if there’s a way to make sure Mi-young acquires the studio he bought for her in France. Lawyer Hong advises that Gun speak with Mi-young instead of preparing this will, to which Gun replies, “I don’t have that right.”

Mi-young is someone who will feel guilty rather than moved by the contents of this will, Lawyer Hong argues. “I think this isn’t for Kim Mi-young’s benefit.” And as if on cue, Gun is told that Mi-young is here to see him.

He asks what business she has to see him now, since their business relations are over. He laughs when she returns the money he paid for the Keddongie painting, saying that he has nothing but money to burn, but Mi-young says she added compensation since she’s also partly responsible. He throws the envelope of money aside.

She presents him with the folded note from him (as Young-ja) next, and asks if this note also holds no meaning to him because he wrote it as part of his act. He affirms it, not meeting her eyes.

He keeps his eyes averted as she tells him that she’s leaving for Paris tomorrow. It’s as if Mi-young is looking for more than the detached answers that he’s giving her, and then asks if what he said as Young-ja about being happy living under the same sky was disingenuous too.

Gun wonders why she’s asking so many pointless questions today, and Mi-young truthfully answers that she’s realized there were so many discrepancies after learning that Gun was Young-ja.

He claims to be too busy for this kind of senseless talk, so Mi-young rises from her seat. However, she hangs back to remark how strange it is that Gun looks so nervous to be around her even after his fake identity was blown wide open.

Lawyer Hong waits for Mi-young down in the lobby, having expected that her conversation with Gun would be short. The two continue their chat elsewhere, and Lawyer Hong is sad that she’ll be leaving earlier than originally planned. She’s grateful that her agency will be amending the conditions of her contract for her, and is thankful to her former boss for his help.

Lawyer Hong is happy to help, then carefully broaches the topic about Gun—does she have any intention to get back together with him? He wonders why they broke up when they seemed so good together, and Mi-young confesses that she doesn’t know the exact reason either.

Back then, things were so difficult that she didn’t think about why, though she’s growing more curious lately. Lawyer Hong reaches for something in his pocket before he thinks better of it, though he casts a look at Mi-young’s back. Oh boy, are you thinking of giving her that voice recorder?

Over at the hospital, Yong is happy to hear that his health is in tip-top shape. Still, Doctor Moon advises him to be careful since Yong is also susceptible to the Lee family’s genetic illness and could experience a flare-up like Gun. It takes about two seconds before Yong processes what he’s been told, and he looks thoroughly alarmed by the information.

It seems like Yong spoke to his mother because Mama Yong takes that news straight to the Lee head elder. Despite being aware of the family’s genetic illness, she never imagined that Gun would get it. The head elder agrees that they must keep this a secret from Grandma Wang, though that smirk isn’t very reassuring.

Bless her heart—Mi-young meets with Se-ra, who finally comes clean about how she fabricated that divorce agreement she gave Mi-young three years ago because she thought that doing so would bring Gun back to her.

Se-ra isn’t looking to be forgiven, but simply wanted to relieve the burden off of her chest. She brings up Gun’s name before catching herself, saying that this is as much as she can say. Man, even your semi-apology/explanation is awfully bitchy.

Mi-young attends the promotional event for the women’s brand as promised, where she meets a very familiar face. It turns out to be yet another identical sibling to the prenatal teacher and baby store owner, who proudly introduces herself as the eldest unni.

A little later, Mi-young sits down for an interview about the “There lives a little girl in every woman’s heart” commercial. When asked about how she came up with the tagline, Mi-young searches for an answer and her eyes fall upon Gun, who happened to overhear the interview in the vicinity.

Her eyes fixed on Gun, Mi-young discloses that the tagline was inspired by a trustworthy unni she liked. She’s grateful to the unni who constantly encouraged her and gave her strength whenever she was going through a slump, but no, they don’t talk often, and truthfully their contact stopped not too long ago.

“But I’d like to tell that person that I’m thankful. I don’t know what it was like for her, but everything on my end was sincere,” Mi-young finishes.

Mom is half-upset that her daughter is leaving so soon, though she’s understanding to the idea that Mi-young feels more comfortable overseas. It’s about to get a lot less comfortable when Gun walks into the restaurant unannounced, perhaps seeking some comfort food tonight.

Needless to say, both Mi-young and Gun are surprised to see each other, and Mom whispers at him to get out in order to make things less awkward. Her attempt doesn’t go unnoticed and Gun pretends to receive a pressing work call, until Mi-young tells Mom to feed him. Hilariously, Gun barks into his (silent) phone that a man’s got to eat first.

After a most uncomfortable dinner, Gun rises first to leave. He tells Mom to relay to Mi-young that she needn’t worry because he won’t come here again. Two can play at this game, though, and Mi-young tells her mother to tell Gun that she was just about to say that.

It quickly turns into the kind of petty argument of using a third party as an excuse not to talk to each other even though they’re technically fighting with one another. It doesn’t take long for Mom to intervene and scold both of them for their bickering.

Gun then moseys over to Mi-young’s side to say goodbye to Mom, though the words themselves are for Mi-young: “Take care.”

Once he leaves, Mi-young tells her mother not to see Gun again because nothing good will come of it. Mom tells her daughter not to hate Gun so much and can’t shake off the notion that something is going on between them.

Mi-young then returns to the intersection where she lost Keddongie to say her farewell to her unborn child. “You’ll wait for Mommy until she becomes more confident and courageous, right?”

With tears in her eyes, Mi-young tells Keddongie that she misses him and loves him dearly. And just across the street, Gun looks on, wanting to go to Mi-young though willing himself not to. He has something to tell Keddongie too: “Your mother is leaving Korea again. I’m being punished because I was selfish.”

As Mi-young prepares to leave the next morning, she sees the voice recorder in her bag. The attached rolled-up note from Lawyer Hong stresses that this recording has nothing to do with her and urges her not to press play. Is that how you get around breaking any legal breaches?

But Mi-young does press play, and listens to Gun’s voice describing the conditions to be acted upon should he ever lose his memory again. It’s mostly a retread of what we’ve already heard, including how Mi-young should never learn of the contents of his will.

The recording also contains the earlier conversation between Gun and Lawyer Hong, of how Gun should tell Mi-young about the existence of such a testament, and also Gun’s reservations that he doesn’t have the right. Mi-young’s floored by everything she’s heard.

Daniel has overheard most of the recording, which Mi-young hastily turns off at his approach. On the way to the airport, Daniel says he feels like the most foolish person in this world. He keeps making the same mistake even though he knows he’ll regret it because he keeps wanting to see her smile.

With that, he turns the car around. He says that she’ll never be able to forget Gun if she leaves now, so he encourages her to confront Gun about what he’s hiding from her. He knows how silly it is for him to drop Mi-young off to see his rival, but he feels that it’s for her benefit.

Mi-young’s family worries when Mi-young doesn’t swing by the restaurant to say her farewells, but Mom assures them that she probably had something else to attend to first.

Meanwhile Gun adds a miniature portrait of Keddongie in his parents’ memorial, introducing them to their grandchild. Speaking to his mother, Gun says that he feels pretty lousy today. “The woman I love most after you says she’s leaving far away today. I couldn’t say goodbye and freely told her to leave. So I’m going to drop everything and leave here, too.” Wait, what?

Gun continues: “If I stay here, I’ll run into her some time. And if I do, I’ll be happily jumping up and down like a mutt even though I’m not supposed to. But why did Father do that? I can’t even handle one woman, and I don’t even have the courage to ask her to stay by my side and endure this tiresome genetic illness with me. But how could he have done that to two women? His shamelessness is a strength of his.”

He tells his mother to enjoy her time with Keddongie until he joins them. Er, do you mean in death? Even though your current health shows no prospect of that right now?

Daniel drops Mi-young off at Lee Manor with words of encouragement. Mi-young apologizes and thanks him, and he ushers her out. He stays long enough to see her go inside and tells himself that he did the right thing.

Although Gun isn’t at home, Grandma Wang is completely beside herself to see Mi-young anyway. She grants Mi-young’s request to wait in his room, adding that she could go ahead and live there if she wanted to.

The happy memories of her married life with Gun come flooding back to her as she surveys the room, which is painful for her (and us) to recall. She looks at the entrance to Gun’s man cave in curiosity. Ooh, are you going to head inside?

It looks like Gun has wasted no time to drop everything, because Manager Tak frantically calls Grandma Wang to inform her of an immediate press conference. The media has a field day with the announcement of Gun’s genetic illness, the headlines suggesting the high possibility that he may resign.

Mi-young enters the man cave and sees the nursery items inside, including the first outfit they made for Keddongie in the prenatal class. Shaken, Mi-young sits down and peruses the laptop left open. She clicks one of the video clips out of curiosity, which turns out to be video messages from Gun left to himself in the event he loses his memory again in the future.

He tells himself that what he’s about to say is very important: “You have a woman you love. Her name is Kim Mi-young and her hometown is Yeoul Island. Like a fool, she’s a kind woman who takes good care of someone who’s hurting. She’s a very lovable woman.”

Video Gun then shares the story of how they first met and how they became parents to a wonderful child named Keddongie. “But Keddongie isn’t here anymore. He went very far away.”

Tears fall from Mi-young’s eyes as past Gun explains that he never once forgot about Keddongie, who stayed by his father’s side until a little while ago. By now tears are streaming down past Gun’s face too, as he says he has to send “Dalpengie” away now.

Mi-young checks the most recent video log where past Gun is drinking on-camera. This message is from the night after they both had dinner at Mom’s restaurant, albeit separately. Drunken Gun contemplates whether he should forget Mi-young or not, then recounts how he sat at that table and practically choked on his food when he saw Mi-young’s face.

He really wanted to sit at that table, Drunken Gun confesses. “But I guess I can’t sit there for the rest of my life. But how can I tell her to stay with me. How can I tell her not to leave?! How can I tell her that?!” he roars.

Sobbing, Mi-young recalls how Gun had declined to stay by her side, and how she had accused him of giving up on Keddongie. Clutching her chest, she breaks down in tears.

COMMENTS

Oof. It was just last episode when I’d wondered how much longer Gun would continue pushing Mi-young away, masking his true feelings underneath, and denying her and himself of the truth. It’s frankly a rather frustrating experience for us on our end, even if we know the reasons behind why Gun did so. Because while we can go ahead and read between the lines of the words Gun has said in these past few episodes as well as this one, he allows Mi-young to take them at face value and let her think that he has become the worst kind of person.

Seeing as Mi-young’s tears grabs me every time, this instance is no different. For what seems like the longest time, we’ve seen Mi-young give Gun countless opportunities to speak to the intentions behind his actions both before and after his Young-ja character was revealed, though the confrontation in his office in his hour let him affirm that his Young-ja persona was an act rather than deny it and disclose the truth. Still, it says something about Mi-young that she speaks of Gun positively, giving him credit where credit is due. In those times, I feel like Gun who is in awe of just how the core of Mi-young’s kindheartedness has remained steadfast despite the obstacles she’s faced over the years.

It was a heartwrenching moment when Mi-young finally did see how Gun truly feels about her, even if it was in video form. Gun had a hard enough time as it was being honest to himself, but I appreciate that he’s left evidence (even if he intended to leave it for himself) to remember the memories that are most precious to him: how he loves Mi-young, how he can’t bring himself to ask her to stay with him, and that he hasn’t forgotten about Keddongie.

I have to give the show credit for hanging a lantern on how Mi-young doesn’t know why she and Gun broke up, though knowing that tidbit now seems like a small consolation prize. Then I would give Se-ra a few points to fessing up about drawing up her fake divorce agreement, if only her apology was less about getting that burden off her chest than sincerely apologizing to Mi-young about it. What’s important now, though, is that Mi-young does know about the fake divorce agreement, that Gun drew up a will with her in mind, and that he pushed her away because of his own fear of his genetic illness showing up and wrecking everything.

It’s the fear of the risk of another occurrence of Gun’s genetic illness that keeps Gun maintaining his distance from Mi-young. I understand the reasoning behind why Gun would want to avoid Mi-young having to endure the hardships that come with a neurodegenerative disease if another episode led down that path. And at the same time, within the context of this particular narrative, that same disease has been dormant for the past three years. So what I’m afraid of is that the same neurodegenerative disease will be handled as a plot device to drive a final conflict for the remainder of the series.

Now that Gun has gone public about his genetic illness, it seems like the show may head in that direction. But rather than waiting for a flare-up that may or may not happen, I’d rather watch Gun and Mi-young sit down at the same table with anchovy wraps and hash everything out. Even if it’s for Keddongie’s sake, and maybe a little for ours as well.

*HEADDESK*
Oh Fated. I had such high hopes when you excelled my expectations early on and delivered a sweet, engrossing story with exceptional leads to boot. I watched every episode with a huge smile on my face and my heart bursting with happiness.
But this episode doused my love for you. You’ve resorted to old tricks and lost everything that was unique about you. I watched detachedly as Gun put on his Jekyll and Hyde act to be the best noble idiot he could be. I rolled my eyes at each character inconsistency you threw at us (i.e., Se-ra suddenly developing a hint of conscience toward Min-young.) I hit fast-forward countlessly through redundant scenes and still knew exactly what was happening.
What’s so frustrating about Fated is that it started off so fresh and quirky that you believe the writers will continue to deliver new spins to old tactics. Who didn’t see it coming that Min-young would find out about Gun’s illness through the tape recorder?? It angers me that ALMOST EVERYONE knew about his illness EXCEPT for Min-young. It’s almost laughable how predictable everything was in this episode.
I’m finding it increasingly difficult to sympathize with Gun at this point. If he wants to be miserable and keep pushing Min-young away, that’s his own doing. He thinks he’s being selfless but he’s actually the opposite. He searches Min-young out and moves her heart. Then he treats her cruelly and coldly so she stays away from him. On top of that, he thinks by inflicting pain on her now, she won’t feel that much pain when he’s gone. THE HELL KINDA LOGIC IS THAT?? Like Lawyer Hong wisely said, Mi-young would be filled with guilt and sorrow. She would never forgive herself and that pain would surpass even loving then losing him.

I feel for you Lulu. I've been defending the show for so long in my head. And out loud. But for the past few episodes, things have been going round and round in circles. It's still better than a lot of other shows around, but I feel the writers just lost it halfway through. The direction is still smooth, and the actors put in more than we could ask of them, but I feel so clueless as to where the story is heading.

We started with a heartwarming romcom. And now we've veered so far into the cliched melodrama territory, I don't even know what to say. The premise was so great. And the execution always transcended our expectations, which in turn only helped raise them for the future. I feel sad, disappointed, betrayed. Feel like I'd been so invested in the show. And the writers just ended up producing plot developments that felt like last an 11th hour assignment they didn't even want to do in the first place. So half-hearted, really.

I'm so relieved Mi-young finally hit the man-cave. This truth needed to come out. But I don't know where the story is planning to go next. What with the disease taking centre stage again...

I feel betrayed when a funny romcom turns into melodrama. So disappointing. Thank goodness for cable romcoms.

Cable romcoms are getting too hyped up. Personally, I dropped MND after episode 10 even though everyone was so enthusiastic about it. The first episode of My Secret Hotel was also disappointing...

Well, compared to its Taiwanese counterpart, this version is loads better. The actors definitely delivered.

I was expecting this (the sad melo part) to happen but it never failed to make me feel disappointed (the last part made me cry though). Based on tomorrow's preview, I think it's gonna get better. I hope it will go back to the happy fluff soon...

Yeah, overall I rate this one higher than the Taiwanese version. I liked the TW version well enough but I feel I relate to the Korean characters better. The Taiwanese version certainly never made me cry! Geon speaking to Gaedonggie makes me cry, I can't help it. I do look forward to some cute fun scenes in the last couple of episodes. Or at least the last episode. I hope!

I'm with you guys on this episode. Up to now I'd given the show some room for following the forced separation formula. They needed to completely unwind the relationship, and negate all the obstacles that were used to rationalize the breakup. I thought they had put all those pieces in place as of the last episode. So him continuing to resist her attempts to reconcile, now seems pointless.

Prior to this episode I thought he had been both noble and thoughtful. But this episode he seemed to jump the shark into full fledged noble idiocy.

Perhaps the key to why they're stretching it out was in the lawyer's throwaway comment, that he hasn't been doing this for her sake. Whatever it is, I sure hope there's a good reason and they resolve it tomorrow.

Yes, there is hope - and some relief from frustration if you are willing to accept this somber middle Act as part of a bigger story. Of course you don't have to...

What I've enjoyed about this show is that it has not been afraid to take on volatile extremes -- whether of joyful exuberance or of the slow-burning agony of loss. For me, it makes the inevitable resolution of conflict and reconciliation [this is a comedy, after all], so much more intensely rewarding when we finally get it.

For me, this is, in the end, an unabashedly fulsome story about love, so I'll share my own abiding love for FTLY with you once again if you are game:

Everything you said. If there were was an FTLY episode I completely, absolutely HATED, it would be this one. It felt choppy and totally contrived. So, so badly done. It seemed like everybody woke up one fine morning and decided they should shake the dust off their noble selves and bring Gun and Mi-young together. Daniel, Sera, the lawyer, the man-cave(I swear it's like a character on its own)- everyone. Or is this the 'Fate' part of the story playing up again? Convenient.

This episode was "Miyoung finds out the truth through all means possible". I agree with you guys, the events don't seem natural and organic with the story. What, Sera felt bad because Gun dumped her so she has to talk to Miyoung? She was never that nice. What Lawyer Hong seemed wrong to me: your responsibility is to your client! But no, because Miyoung has to find out, he has to breach his confidentiality agreement.

The main thing keeping me with this drama is Jang Hyuk. I can watch him act for hours on end.

I JUST. CAN'T. BELIEVE. GUN. ACTUALLY. HAS. HD.
I swear to God, if he dies anytime during this series,I will fly down to Korea and haunt those writers.

Why? I thought the diagnosis would turn out to be fake. Isn't this supposed to be a romcom?

So unfair.

I still understand him though, wanting to prevent MY from hurting while he's ill and yet being unable to stop himself being drawn to her. However, now that his illness is all but confirmed, don't know where they are taking this story

It's a remake of the Taiwan drama, which in fact has a lot more tears and heart wrenching scenes. But true, this version rocks all the way bcs of the romcom in earlier eps. Hopefully they return back after they get back together. *crossed fingers!*

I don't think the Taiwanese version had the dreaded disease element, the exact plot point that has completely messed up this show, much more than the fleeting amnesia.

I've never wished more for a do-over than for this show and this cast.

0

AJ, I think that the Taiwanese version had the male in every generation die young without explaining the cause...it was more like a curse that had to be broken.
What amazes me is that, if Gun had Huntington's disease, that they never discussed it with MY or had genetic testing on the fetus. How could Gun and Grandma want to bring a baby into the world with Huntington's disease?

Ahhh ... that's right ... it was mostly a hook to hang grandma's anxiety/glee about having a baby on. Kind of played for laughs in the Taiwanese version.

Here -- by making it a serious illness –- the whole storyline got warped by the noble idiocy then required, almost overwhelming the shared pain of losing a child, which I thought was really heartbreaking in the Taiwanese version. And Gun's diagnosis also left big plot holes re: what grandma and Gun knew and when did they know it ... holes that the writer is now desperately trying to (1) distract us from with an overload of cute, and (2) back fill through an excess of exposition. See episode 18.

See -- I'm still watching -- but it's mostly for Jang Nara now ... she has created a wonderfully appealing, honest and resilient woman in Mi Young. Don't get me wrong, I think the actor playing Gun has done more with a character who is pretty senseless on the page than I would have thought possible ... but the writing has killed my love for the character and I can't imagine why anyone would prefer him to Daniel.

Someone who speaks Korean and can understand the exact dialogue, please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I don't think that they've confirmed the disease. They've never mentioned genetic testing. All they've done is looked for manifestation of the disease via MRIs. Which is pointless, since even if you catch it early, there's nothing that can be done. Testing for symptoms only makes sense from the standpoint of transferring leadership of the company. (Note that maknae brother wasn't tested until Gun increased his authority, in the event of his own demise.)

What I've been hoping is that we were being set up for some sort of plot twist. Like: Dr. Octopus/squid ink is under the direction of the clan elder to keep Gun and his brother in the dark about whether or not they really have the disease. He's itching for an opportunity to exert more control over the company. Leaking a rumor of their illness would be a card (up his sleeve) that could be used to force them out whenever he wanted.

Unfortunately they don't have enough time to unwind this in the next two episodes. Too bad they spent so much time drawing out the pointless and annoying melo when there were more interesting things they could have done with the drama.

Yeah, other than his name, I find everything about Dr Octopus increasingly offensive. It seems like, as fans, we've gathered more info on the disease than the doc seems to know.

So I like what you're saying here, Gidget. Either he's working for Double Chin Ajhusshi, or he's a completely inept doctor and should be thrown out of the hospital. (Maybe people over at Doctor Stranger will hire him.)

He really reminds me of that Monk from Gu Family Book who thought prophecies were toys to be played around with. Diagnoses are not playthings, Doc Oc! *shakes fist*

I had to ask myself, even…"Did they changer the writers? Cause where the heck did that awesome writers go? The one(s) that wrote the first 10 episodes???" I want my rom-com back, hell…I don't even watch melos on good days...

Seriously, I can't believe this is what was billed as a romcom. I feel cheated and lied to. I have cried for the last 2 eps, it's been 6 eps of angst!!!!!! That's a bit much. I expected a maximum of like 3 eps of angst.

I still love the show though, I'm too invested in Gun and MY. But, show this isn't what I expected

I've never seen a Korean romcom that's romcom all the way. The scriptwriters actually do try to inject humour into the episodes, in the sense that even when they are talking about something sad, there are still some fun scenes. So we should still give some credit for that. For instance, the whole of ep13 was full of comedy. And the scene in ep15 where Geon followed Mi-young in the orchard was hilarious.

Honestly speaking, I kinda lost my love for Geon already, but I do like how Mi-young's character is going to take the initiative this time which is going to be a turnaround from the original version. I think the next 3 episodes are going to be light. There are reasons for optimism following the preview shown and I'm definitely going to keep watching. Even if the script disappoints, the Jangs are arguably the best couple in any Kdrama (by a million miles imo). Their chemistry together is enough to persuade me to continue watching the show.

Someone close to Lee Gun should have taken pity on him and revealed his sickness to MY sooner, and it shouldn't have to be his lawyer of all people, cos he could get debarred for it. Was his secretary too happy getting his butt smacked to want MY to return? Why the hell didn't he even meet w MY all those times she went to the office on business, or given her a hint? Serious fault in the writing.

And the grandma has no clue? She didn't know that her own husband and son had this disease and died young? So her grandson is also prone to it? She couldn't put 2 and 2 together and suspected that the disease might have sth to do with the couple's breakup? Honestly, she's got to be the least interfering grandma in chaebol land!

What about that blabber mouth mistress? She loves digging into LG's secrets and then tell it to the world. Why not this time? It might very well have the effect of kicking LG out as CEO, so it should be in her interest.

The lawyer giving her his clients recorded instructions. Really?

I thought the doc said that stress is bad for LG's disease. He sure has put himself under a great deal of stress in these 3 years. I wouldn't be surprised if it flares up as soon as he and MY reconnect w each other!

Also, more kudos to gummimochi for this recap because I found out more details such as the things Gun talked about with Lawyer Hong. I wouldn't have known from watching that Gun was buying Miyoung a studio in France.

I know some people dropped this drama already because of the frustrating plot and I can totally relate. I'm a little sad that they took an amazing quirky character like Lee Gun and turned him into a depressed sick weakling half of the show. However, i do have faith in this writer and with 3 more episodes to go, I really hope the writer and PD will redeem themselves and deliver us a more cheerful rom com, now that most of the angst should be gone. FTLY fighting!

I was hoping that the first five minutes of this episode would be a cathartic confession of true feelings from both parties. Instead, we got Mi-young bravely telling him how much he still means to her, and him heading cowardly into stupid idiot-land. I was actually yelling at my tv, telling him to just shut up and leave if he was going to continue to sabotage himself.

I know this is dramaland, but come on, his responses were so out of character for the person that he's been up to now. I get that he's being "nobly idiotic" but this went far beyond that. Nobody would actually have said all of that to her - they would have quietly left after admitting that they were the one texting her under a different name.

For someone claiming to want to spare MY pain, Gun sure keeps piling it on unnecessarily. I am pissed off at him.

Boxed-in, the time we had been dreading has finally hit us. At this point, I'm so lost taking each episode at a time, I think I need to wait until the series is over, and watch the whole thing in one go in order to make coherent sense of it.

If there's one consolation to take from this episode, it's that at least Mi-young continues to NOT be your typical heroine. She totally proved why we love her by countering Gunnie's feigned assholery with her true and sincere feelings. I loved what she said at the interview with Triplet no 3. That is so like the Mi-young we've known all along.

But with Mi-young taking the uphill path in terms of character growth, and Gunnie inexplicably taking the road to doom, I feel like they might as well belong to different dramas. And with what we were given today, it looks like Mi-young should go find a better drama for herself.

You know Boxed-in, I am SOOOO resentful. Because I loved Gun. The show made me love him more than any other character in any drama ever. And now the show's just confusing me by...not his noble idiocy. If he were noble indeed about the whole thing, he'd just leave her alone. He repeatedly creates opportunities for encounters with Mi-young, then hurts himself and then hurts her as if she's the one asking for it. It's not like I hate Gunnie now. I just don't know...I feel meh about his character now. And that makes me feel terrible. Because all I want to do is love him. I want him to prove to be consistent and I want to be able to understand his motives. I love loving Gun. And I want to whack the writers on the head with a saucepan for depriving us of that. It looks like they're having a bout of amnesia, talent-wise, themselves.

Now, where is the story heading? Are we going to acknowledge that he's got Huntington's after all and go via Scent of a Woman route? If that's the case then we can say byebye to the quirky humour we've come to love about the show. If not, why such a big deal? I'd thought this was going to be nothing above a mental barrier for Gunnie, but now, it's turning into such a mighty godzilla of a real deal - what with Gunnie making video tapes for his future self - that if the disease isn't really there, it will make Gun look like a over-anxious, paranoid hypochondriac. In other words, he's going to look totally insane. And well, in that case, I'd really worry about Mi-young if she were to be with him. And yet, what other choice do we have but to have Mi-young take charge and put some sense into this pathetic man's head.

Ugh...feel so disoriented. And all the PPLs. Was I really so taken up by how great the show was that I didn't notice PPLs in the first place for the first 10 episodes? Or have they gotten, in the past few episodes, lengthy and prominent and just damn everywhere. So jarring really.

I feel sorry for the actors. I know they will pull the show through. But I fear there'll be sighs of relief that it's over rather than...

Jhu, I was fuming throughout the episode, and then remembered what you'd said last time about all good endings coming to die in K-dramaland, and started laughing. Prophetic, those words. :D

See, I don't mind angst when it's done well. I never felt I was tricked into a melodrama or anything, because I more or less knew the plot and didn't expect them to get through issues like miscarriage and genetic disease while being all sunshine and daisies. & I thought Episode #16 was fantastic, especially the last five minutes or so. It made me hopeful that we would get to see a breakthrough of some sort, finally. And then...the first five minutes of #17 disgusted me totally. And my reasons are the same as yours- Gun's character, which has remained stagnant since forever. Zero development. Right now it looks like the strong, lively man we knew is so scared of a disease (which hasn't even struck yet) that he has turned into a pale, sorry reflection of himself. A paranoid hypochondriac, like you said. Is that what the writers meant to convey to us?

Frankly the Huntington's doesn't matter much to me. Now that they have come so far with it, I'd actually like them to not cop out and rather just leave it open-ended . & I really like it that Mi-young is the one who asks questions and goes after him and pulls him out of this mess- because that's believable development in her character, and makes sense plot-wise. What I take serious issue with is that Gun remains the same (or gets worse, whichever way you look at it). I don't want him to woo her back or anything, but at least give her some honest answers for once, if only to help her find closure, since you've seen that all your lying and scheming has clearly come to nothing. It seemed to negate all the conflict of the past four episodes. All the writers managed to prove was that Mi-young is a mountain of strength and Gun is the Great Wall of Stubbornness. All of which we got in Episode 12 itself, thank you very much. Which effectively means that the writers have to resort to clunky external plot devices like second leads deciding to redeem themselves or be noble and lawyers breaking protocol to meddle in their clients' love lives, in order to move the story ahead. So sloppy. & that is what is disappointing, because FTLY has never seemed that way to me. I actually loved it right till last week, and even in this episode, there were great moments, thanks to the strong acting. But then all these revelations were piled on our heads so fast, it just rankled. Maybe it's just the pacing, or whatever.

You're right about the PPLs in the last two episodes. Eyesore.

Pretty sure we're going to get a happy ending though, and lots of sweet moments before that too. For the sake of all the love we've showered on this show, let's just agree to forget this and enjoy that, huh? Since our love was sincere and all that. :P

P.S- I started watching Greatest Love this weekend. So. Entertaining.

Dearest Boxed-in,

Thank you for your lovely reply. And I'll happily forget whatever has passed and enjoy what is to come for sure. I've noticed that my responses towards the show keep fluctuating, depending on how much I think about it, and how much I start to miss it. Ha. But I'm with you on shipping this show all the way. As I'd said in a reply to Samsooki's post last week, I've already adopted the baby that is FTLY. Which means that even if the baby poops, am going to have to look right past the stink, clear up the poop, and go right back to loving it. When it comes to parenting a show, we'll complain and point out flaws, but keep loving it.

See, the thing for me too isn't so much that it's melodrama, as much as it has got to be meaningful melodrama. I am all up for melodrama too, when done right. And the context of the show meant that melodrama was inevitable. My hurt stems from the fact that the show promised us a lot, in terms of quality. And then in these final hours, it really feels like it wants to leave the promise undelivered.

Who wouldn't have benefited from a little more thought, clarity and consistency the writers could have put into plot progression and character motivations. There could have been so many alternatives the show could have taken to arrive at the same conclusion. Some of the most solid characters (Omma, Sec Tak, for instance) with strong relationships and a tangible influence over the lead characters' mindsets could have done some very rudimentary tete-a-tete to nudge them into peering within their own hearts. Why were these characters sidelined when they could have contributed in a way that mattered? Why, when they seemed wiser than the rest of the lot.

It really was sad to see the Voice of Reason completely absent in this episode. With higgledy piggledy decisionmaking by random characters who do not exert as much influence on our couple. And more meddlesome villainy (I'd almost forgotten that double-chinned uncle, is he?) cuing to wreak havoc come next episode. Clunky external plot devices indeed. And I am still unsure why Daniel chose not to explicitly tell Mi-young about what he'd heard from Sera. And Sera herself, poor thing, feels no more than a puppet at the mercy of the writers. You know Wang Ji-won played my favourite character in INR3. I don't know how they managed to reduce her to the mess that she is in FTLY.

Coming to Gun - I couldn't have said it any better. And the reason why I felt like we have been travelling in circles for the past few episodes is precisely because, like you've said, we figured out his Wall of Stubbornness way back in episode 12. And they keep hammering the same idea into us at the beginning of every new episode. Had they delivered on the implicit promise of growth for Gun (if he's the main character, it's a given), I would have been less disappointed. But now it seems like we're actually looking forward to Mi-young pretty much mothering her way...

0

...mothering her way into his life. Bulldoze away, Mi-young, we'll always be by your side.

Le sigh...

Enough about FTLY...for now. Greatest Love...ahhem! You know I wanted to tell you that Greatest Love was one of my first dramas. In fact, the first time I tried watching, I failed miserably. I couldn't tolerate Dokko Jin. I simply didn't get why a person had to be so over the top nonsensical. Then, after watching a plethora of dramas including several of the Hong Sisters', I turned to Greatest Love once again. And that's when things connected. I realised I needed a certain level of acclimatising to the k-dramasphere before I could appreciate what Greatest Love had to offer. Keep enjoying. :)

And this, yes, our love, let's enjoy this while it lasts. In whatever form. Sickness or health, tears or laughter, till the end do us part, and even after. Cause my baby is the best baby in the world.

0

@jhu, LOL at what you said about 'acclimatisation' to K-dramas. So true. In fact, I've discovered that I can only tolerate them in short spurts. & after the FTLY experience, I'll be emotionally wrung out by next week. Oof. Will need a long break.

About Greatest Love, hahaha, I get what you're saying. A 37 year-old actor who doesn't know love? Yeah right. Poisonous levels of ridiculousness. But I still quite enjoyed watching it. Dokko Jin was hilarious and all, but man, it was hard to take his emotional graph seriously. He generated very little empathy in the beginning. In fact it took me ten episodes to leave the P-line and jump onto the Jin-ship, that too mostly because the heroine chose to do so. Now where can I find me a Pil-joo???Now he was beyond adorable. Hands down the best second male lead I've seen so far. Gong Hyo Jin was delightful too; I really liked her plain, practical Ae Jung. Strangely she hadn't made much of an impression on me in The Master's Sun, so maybe I need to revisit that show sometime. But mostly I had a grand time with the deluge of metaphors and the meta commentary on showbiz that was going on. & it helped that I watched this along with FTLY- Dokko Jin's 'selfish bastardy' was a great balm to the nerves which had been frayed by Gun's relentless goodness. The show had its flaws, but overall, it was good fun. Thank you for recommending it.

"He repeatedly creates opportunities for encounters with Mi-young, then hurts himself and then hurts her as if she’s the one asking for it. It’s not like I hate Gunnie now. ... all I want to do is love him." You took the words right out of my mouth, jhu. I am so frustrated with him and his inability to sustain any emotional growth over tha last three years. The writers made me really love and care about him for most of the show, but now I just want to smack some sense into him.

"Mi-young continues to NOT be your typical heroine. She totally proved why we love her by countering Gunnie’s feigned assholery with her true and sincere feelings." As for Mi-young, I LOVE her. I have to keep reminding myself that at the beginning of this show, she was the Post-it note girl! She has come so far in standing up for herself, and not being afraid to be vulnerable. It's almost as if the stronger she gets, the weaker Gun gets; the more she grows, the more stagnant he becomes. I hope that they find a balance soon, and get past all of this nonsense!

Oh lordy...the frustration....its just builds and builds and builds..!! I liked how this drama started off quirky, fun, humorous..now its gotten all dark, sad, anguished..(feel free to add on any other negative adjective)
There's only 3 episodes left(2; if from the looks of the preview shows Mi Young begging Gun to come back to her) the writers better get cracking. This has to end nicely or i might just scream!Enough of diseases, 'nice' second leads(seriously, did the 2 second leads just decide to get all conscientous?! I want laughing, i want happy i want Mi Young finding out HERSELF that Gun indeed loves her and is acting all typical Kdrama-land-like hero because he has a disease. Why does everyone around her know except her?? Oh i forget, the writers decide to go all typical Kdrama-like. I swear, if this ends with him losing his memory and Mi Young showing her true love by staying by his side until he 'recovers'...and with that Gun realises that she actually loves him.. i'll throw a fit!(confused much? I am too)
On a bright note, i did like the whole video thing. At least she got a 'confession' from Gun himself rather than hearing from someone else. She did not just find out how much he actually loved her, she now knows how deep it is. AWWWW,Gunnie-shi...

I actually found the video "confessions" quite touching and oddly fitting. It actually made sense to me that after his first amnesia scare, he would want to make notes for himself to remind him of things he didn't want to forget. It also seemed likely that she would wander into his man-cave once she had entered his room. I don't think that her shyer previous self would have dared to look at the videos on his computer, but the new, braver, stronger her was curious enough to check them out after seeing all of the baby stuff.

And I loved the fact that Gun couldn't pretend that the videos were fake. They were obviously his true feelings, so I'm so glad she got to see them. And I'm glad that the writers didn't make him walk in on her doing so. That would have ruined the whole scene for me.

Gun kept digging that hole deeper (and DEEPER), the OTP spent veeeeeeery little time actually on screen together, but I really wanted to believe this show could and would pull itself together. But then how does everything come out in the open?! Contrived video discovery?! That's what we're going with?!?! Not only that, but now Gun can keep being a nobel idiot and it's Mi Young's job to persuade/poke/prod/beg him to be together?! Are you kidding? Camel, meet straw that broke your back.

Unlike in other kdramas, its very disturbing to see such lousy actings, or great actors ruined by lousy scripts , or great scripts ruined by bad chemistry of leads just because they are well known.

Thanks to this drama even if its making me cry after laughing, I know that it is realistic enough to show true reactions if its real life situation.

And come to think of that, so is Se Ra. A very necessary plot device in this episode. Without her, Daniel would not have learned about Gun's illness and have the crisis of conscience to tell Mi Young about it.

Another heartbreaking episode. Can we have some laughter in the next episode? I'm tired of crying.

I'm in awe of how the writers make the plot seem unpredictable. Wiping my eyes since the very start. I cannot blame Gun why he wants everything in his sole perspective, to keep his loved ones at bay for the hurt and trauma he may cause later on should his disease progress? I pity him at the same time for depraving himself of the love and care of Mi Young. Also wondering if the Elder may have a hand on spilling the news about the condition of Gun to the media. Perhaps thinking now is the right time for them to takeover the business...tsk tsk tsk

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who pities Gun. We might want to see from his POV- he probably saw first hand how sad his mother was( when his Dad's condition became bad) and yet stayed with her husband. He loves MYsshi so much that he doesn't want to inflict the same pain to MYsshi.
Did he handle the whole business properly? No.
Are we, the audiences, losing our patience( and minds)- of course .
But I have faith in PDnim...yes, the drama began as a fluffy rom com and now it's getting serious( not melo, yet). Isn't real life is like that though??? Be patient, all the fans here, let's give PDnim the courtesy to finish telling us how these two's fate will unfold. If by the end of epi20, PDnim fails( like the Dodo bird who ruined Big( my Yoo!!!) , then I will join you all...with my pitchfork, too!

Despite Gun legit losing it in this episode JH stillll makes me feel and shed tears for Gun's (self-created) torment and heartache!!

The episode was far from the best, but it made me realize one thing : the things we complain about the most mostly happen when Gun and MY are not in the scene. You can throw at these two all kinds of cliché situations and they'll still pull it off gracefully.

I was mad at Gunnie in the first scene for keeping the cold act, but MY was so hurt at that moment she wouldn't have processed an explanation anyway. MY is becoming her true self again, which is great, but Gunnie's depression is getting very scary, let's just hope for our snails' well-being.

The video tapes are probably the highlight of the angst era. The acting is breathtaking. FTLY's Jang Hyuk wins at everything : romance, comedy, goofy action, extreme heartbreak .. Jang Nara is a breath of fresh air in an industry full of lame female romcom leads, and I love her to bits, but Jang Hyuk is the core of this show. A killer combo, and an unforgettable drama.

JH has pretty much moved into my favorite actor spot. The man says so stinking much through those eyes, he kills me. How could Mi Young not SEE that he was lying. That it was killing him? I certainly could and it was killing me! Sigh...

True ! JH conveys more emotions through his eyes, or even the crack in his voice, than many actors do through speech and body. His pain was so transparent that I was always mad at MY for being so clueless. He made some of my favorite KDrama perfomances look so shabby and plain.

Noble_ood, I was also noticing how effectively JH modulates his voice...shouting, whispering, crackling, groaning... He really transcends the text and we are moved by his voice.

My only gripe is that this episode should have been 2 episodes ago.

I can understand the whole nobleness but it dragged on for too long with us seeing how tortured he is by his decision but yet choosing to hurt her all over again and more because of his inability to cut ties with Mi Young when he should since he consistently resorts to being a jerk every time he sees her. Where's the logic, Gun? If he doesn't loose his mind from his disease, his unexpressed love for Mi Young will probably drive him nuts.

And like always, when Jang Nara cries, my tears will fall on cue. By the way, show. How much more does Mi Young have to endure, seriously?

When Gun was like “and so I’m leaving!” at the end of his dead-parents talk, I totally thought MY was going to find out the truth just in time for him to be out of the country, and then we’d get two more episodes of separated pining. So I’m really glad THAT isn’t happening.

I actually didn't think last week was that bad, but this episode was dragging for me - I think it'll really pick back up now that the whole noble secret thing is out.

Gun’s video diaries were sort of “explain my evil master plan while you dangle over the pit” levels of contrived, but honestly idec because I’m so relieved to finally have everybody on the same f'ing page

I still like the show even though I feel like I got cheated out of a rom-com (they should have called it a "romelo-com"). Maybe I can pretend episodes 13 to 16 never happened and this is just a 16 episode drama. hehe

Well, for the first time, that last scene had me tearing up because of a drama. If this drama was headlined be lesser actors, I may have quit a long time ago. Kudos to the two Jangs. That's how I'm so invested to their characters.

However, after my eyes and mind was clear, I became disappointed that it isn't Gun who will be doing the win-my-love-back thing, as it should rightly be. I had him on a long leash, willing to see if he will be brave enough to be true to himself and I was patient, tried to empathize and understand his logic. I'm not dropping this since the show built some goodwill from it's first 10 episodes, but I'm just going to hope that the writer will not treat me like a fool and just treat that disease as a plot device.

Oh gosh. I didn't manage to finish watching the raw episode last night, but the recap alone is enough to make me want to bawl.

The initial bit where Gun was being the noble idiot bore on so, so slowly I thought the revelation was going to be dragged out till episode 19, but HOORAY! At least MY now knows that Gun never stopped loving her and Geddong, and the reason for him pushing her away.

I just hope that Gun only resigned to migrate to somewhere else so that he would never run into MY (e.g. if MY returns to Korea for a visit). I mean, how can you possibly choose to die before your beloved grandma, right?

Thank god that Lawyer Hong's meddling has finally paid off after all his previous good intentions went wrong!

And hooray Daniel, I like you so much more than Se Ra. (Of course, you're also hotter!)

I was SO looking forward to this episode. 5 minutes in (despite my overwhelming love for Jang Hyuk/Gun) I wanted to whack Gun on the head! I am such a Gun-MY fan but it was so frustrating to see him do the same thing - AGAIN! I seriously questioned if it would be good for MY to be with Gun since he keeps hurting her so. Daniel redeemed himself a little in this episode...but Sera. What kind of non-apology was that?!

I am willing to deal with angst but episode 11 - 17 (& possibly more) is way too much. Give me back the sweet and quirky FTLY I love.

After seeing this episode especially the last scene where MY saw LG's videos, the more I love FTLY. This drama continues to deliver memorable and moving scenes, and continues to make me feel, if not sympathetic to, what the main characters are going through. I didn't mind the "snail's pace" of revealing the secrets or resolving the issues because I think the writers are being deliberate in order to produce an impactful and more memorable revelation scene such as the last few minutes of this episode. Tremendous last scene!
I also didn't mind LG still being firm with his decision to push MY away because today's episode has clearly shown it was all out of love for MY. I admire LG's selfless act of love. How anyone who has given up something out of great concern or love for another person not admire LG?
I also admire MY in this episode for demonstrating again that she knows the true person of LG, even before seeing LG's videos. She was quick to notice something was amiss between LG words to her and LG aka LJ's letter/text messages. She also remains true and loyal to her feelings for LG.
Daniel's driving MY to LG's house and graciously stepping aside for the Snail couple's reunion, was equally admirable and moving in this episode.

Thanks gummimochi for this recap. I too can sense the light at the end of the tunnel and a satisfying ending to this beautiful FTLY drama... Ep 18, I'm ready for ya! :-)

i find this episode truly awesome. i don't know why people don't like it. both Jang Hyuk & Jang Nara are excellent.

do you guys actually understand how awful is Huntington disease?? how difficult and hard is it to take care a person with that disease? furthermore, it's a hereditary disease. your children might get it too. do you know how awful it's going to be to watch your own husband die because of this disease and knowing that your children might get it too and eventually suffer and pass away with the same disease??

Gun has always been about prioritizing other people's needs above his. he was also like that even when he was still Sera's boyfriend. i don't know why all of you are suddenly so surprised and disappointed with him when it's soooooo obvious since day 1 that he has this kind of traits in him.

i want to scream so bad when Mi Young still went ahead to go to airport even after she has seen and heard so many evidences that clearly showed something is off with Gun's behaviors towards her. thank god Daniel was there.

this is the time for Mi Young to prove she is no longer a post-it girl but she is a super glue. go and get your man girl!

Thanks for raising a very valid point here. People here feel frustrated with LG's noble idiocy but this is SO consistent with the LG being portrayed since EP 1. This is the same idiotic LG (if you want to characterise him that way) who remained loyal to a girlfriend that put him as second best to her career for 6 years.

This may be his biggest failing in the eyes of many but then at the same time the most appealing aspect of a man who has his heart bigger than his head.

FTLY continues to deliver and impress me as a much better drama than so many others. Hopefully Ep 18 will bring us all back to its full magical glory.

it feels like you're the Lee Young-Ja to Gunni-sshi..

Plot-wise, I'm satisfied with what we got. The major kinks were sent out of the way ~

1) fake divorce paper reveal (sera .. i'd give you 1 brownie point .. but not telling MY that Gun is ill? Deduct all points!!! and i'm putting u in the notti corner!!!!)

2) MY knows about how Gun feels (mostly indirectly & then the man-cave reveal...) & yes, that he's VERY AVAILABLE except that he's going to .... no no no he's not gg to die... REPEAT MODE ON >_<

3) all second leads are struck out of the game. FINALLY. Let our snail couple have their couple time okay?!?!?!?!? Go into a real cave !!!!

Character-wise, Gunni-sshi continued to break my heart... But that's kudos to Jang Hyuk who has brought this man to life. Have you ever had someone use 'mwahahahaha' to so many different effects?? At the start it was to show us his ego then, it was used to cover his insecurity, and today, he chose to use it to make her think he's just grown more obnoxious...

His mood was extremely sombre. He never smiled all ep ... When he decided to let Kaedong go with omma ... I think he decided to activate the plans to forsake everything. Unlike the last time, he harbored hopes...and when MY appeared again, he held on to some hope.. of .. just the chance of being under the same sky as her.... but when he knew she loved/still loves him... when he knew that she held on to the pain of losing her child ... he had to give her a chance at happiness and that is to cut off all ties with her (on the surface)...

I know we here cry foul at his noble idiocy. .... but I understand why he did it. I knew someone like that... someone who pushed others away when an illness was discovered... you know... when you know you can see the ending... one makes very different life choices... because even hoping is a luxury... and holding on to something together, is going to make the pain of the ultimate separation worse... why not just watch from far and wish the other party well....

it's because Gun told her clearly that there was absolutely no chance that he was going back to her.

she thought that if she insisted staying by his side, not minding about him having the disease will work in making Gun went back to her but Gun made it obvious to her that was never going to happen.

that was why she confessed because that was the way she can let go of Gun and be rid of her guilt.

everything in eps 17 happen sfor a reason. there is a trigger and cause. i feel nothing is choppy about this eps.

The show may not have played out the way we wanted it to, but I'll always remember it for the subtle ways it stirs our hearts. But, the actors are what won me over. Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara are AMMMAZING together!! Their expressions and dalogue delivery proves they're true veterans of the game.
Needless to say the new hairdo makes him look HOT AS HELL!

hahahaha.. they dangled light and funny scenes at the beginning then after we took the bait, we were treated with heavy drama.

i'm a bit disappointed that this turned out to be like any other korean series i've seen. actually i would've stopped watching by now, but the Jangs are amazing!!! they are so powerful on screen and they can easily manipulate our emotions. viewers either feel sorry and empathize with Gun or feels like whacking his head or slapping him senseless. i actually feel the same thing with Mi Young (both feeling sorry for her and at the same time wanting to hit her in the head for taking Gun's words/actions at face value initially). it's the actors that sets this drama apart from the other romcom-turned-melo series that i've seen.

I'm surprised that no one gives credit to Gun's meeting with Sera as the turning point that brought the chain of events leading to the last scene of this episode. People didn't change all of a sudden and decided to be nice; watch closely:

1. Gun made it clear to Sera that it's impossible for them to be together;

2. Sera FINALLY realized her strategy of staying by Gun's side came to futility and therefore there is no need for her to hide about her deed 3 yrs ago (note: not out of conscience but acting to her own benefit);

3. Daniel then knew about it, thought about it, and gradually understood and agreed (to Sera's question that) he couldn't be the winner of MY's heart.

People act according to their own logic and calculation; to me there's no sudden change of character.

To people who started watching this drama as a full rom-com then unfortunately yes you're "betrayed" by the show. I fully expected the melo part coming having watched the TW version; but basically they've changed the second half so much that it's a semi-new story to me now. Do I like this version more or the TW version? THIS version all the way.

Yes,yes! This version is soo much better!

And the writer already stated that the disease is pretty much real , of course the writer will not gonna turn the ship and make the disease will regressed or anything. As u said, Gun simply keeps his foot on the ground and accept that his disease is going to show up sooner or later. I understand the slow pace of the drama lately but this episode has all the things that need to happen! And the heart wrecking scenes btween MY and Gunnie are something to watch over and over again. Im so gonna re-watch it again and again! Plus Jang Hyuk is SO HOOTTT rocking that hairdo *melt*

Wow, I haven't commented in a loooong time but I just have to say that I am still loving this drama despite many people being slightly turned off by it's melodrama style story line right now.

I always thought that it was strange when I saw comments when people said they cried while reading recaps but now I completely understand, having shed my first tears whilst reading a recap. That ending when Mi-Young breaks down as she finally knows Gun's feelings gets me everytime.

Also, I am now a huge fan of Jang Hyuk, having never seen anything that he has been in. <3 I'm been a fan of Jang Nara since I saw in School 2013. (I know that I'm a bit late on this train but better late than never right!)

First, so I don't forget, thanks or the fast recap!

I gotta say, this is probably the only time that a character's noble idiocy doesn't make me angry. I get understand why Gun is making the choice he has and it helps that i can see how much he's suffering because of his decision. I'm glad MY finally knows because hopefully she can force him to let her make her own decision about staying or going.

The angst has gone on long enough and I'm ready fir more lovey dicey. But I'm surprised so many people have commented about being "tricked" into watching a melo. I've never watched a rom com that didn't go melo at some point. Is there one? Maybe it's just that this went melo at the halfway point and hasn't gotten over it yet?

Looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully an episode that doesn't leave me in tears.

For the record .... I ... Logan5 ... devoted husband and all too indulging father .... totally predicted that the turning point was going to be her finding the Man Cave ... I told my wife and I also predicted it here .... of course my wife thinks I'm being silly for find pleasure in such trivial things ... but as the only man in the house surrounded by women, I need to find my little victories where I can find them.

I must say, like so many other Rom-Coms ... this show too has lost most of it's "com" in the second and third act ... frustrating ... very frustrating ... but still not to the lows of "The Prime Minister and I" ... The sheer will of the main actors keeps the show alive even if the writers insist on making this a melodrama ...

Here's to hoping that with the relegation of his love for her, the light comedy returns as perhaps the dup will now work together to save Gun's job and the company ... but against whom?

I just hope there won't be some contrived "bad guy" that appears out of no where.

Deus Ex Machina ... stay away! oh who am I fooling ... this is Kdrama land ... Deus Ex Machina is thy name.

But I'll still watch, because as disappointing as the show may have become, we've already invested enough emotional capital to still care about these two adorkable heroes.

Although many ppl want Gunnie to chase MY back but I think it would be more out of character bcs his reason tp push MY away 3 years ago still persist and he still got no reason to do that bcs his genetic disease (as the writernim strongly stated) is real.

and I think SeRa only confronts MY now bcs Gunnie says that if things are not meant to be, will never ever meant to be..meaning he and SeRa...

The only thing I cant brain is the lawyer gives MY the recorder. Arent you a fully certified lawyer of a CEO of a company?:O but am not complaining the domino effects it brings. Thank goodness finally MY knows!

And true, this episode could have been more beautifully executed (bcs the earlier eps were and we have our expectations high)

Much love for Jangs couple! and gummimochi for the fast recaps! (*still have to conviced myself that Jang Hyuk is a father of 2. Cant stop swooning over him*)
