Baek Jin-hee cast opposite Choi Jin-hyuk in Pride and Prejudice

It looks like there’s been a complete casting overhaul for MBC’s new Monday-Tuesday legal drama Pride and Prejudice, with Choi Jin-hyuk (Fated To Love You) up to star as the leading man after Daniel Choi was courted; now Baek Jin-hee (Triangle) is being wooed to play the heroine after Kim Ah-joong was offered the role. They could be really cute together, though they feel a little bit more like a rom-com coupling than one for a heavier legal drama like this.

The legal drama (which has nothing to do with Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice) comes from writer Lee Hyun-joo of School 2013 and PD Kim Jin-min of Time Between Dog and Wolf. It’s set in the world of prosecutors and lawyers, each with different ambitions and prejudices for and against the bureaucratic system. The hero is a chief prosecutor who enjoys prestige and money, and worked his way up on the fast track because he was smart enough to skip grades to become a prosecutor at age 21.

The heroine is a junior prosecutor, known for her dogged investigative skills. She’s more like a detective with a prosecutor’s badge, because she started as a cop and changed course to go to law school and become a prosecutor. She’s stubborn and only cares about the truth, which is exactly the kind of detective or prosecutor who’s always jumping into the fray and then getting reprimanded later. She sounds like a cool character, though I think it’ll take some convincing for me to believe Baek Jin-hee was once a tough-as-nails detective-in-training before law school. Fingers crossed for smart, witty banter between two legal hotshots.

Pride and Prejudice plans to start shooting later this month, and follows Records of a Night Watchman on Mondays and Tuesdays in October.

Seems she is the next "It Girl" She got a lot of attention for Empress Ki in South Korea, even overshadowing the considered main stars/original leads - Ha Ji Won and Joo Jin Moo. It really ruffled a lot of feathers, behind the scene, because her arc was even extended to pander to her growing popularity.

She also gained fans, for her "pure" looks and original Korean face, without obvious plastic surgery. She is being groomed to be the next major star, like Kim Min-hee, Jun Ji-hyun, etc.

Hope she goes ahead and confirm! I want to see her as a pn interesting female lead. She did good in triangle but her character ended up being so plain and the plot a mess so.. wait I promised not to remember anything about triangle past the first episodes.

MBC totally loves Baek Jin Hee.

I prefer her to Kim Ah Joong, so I'm cool with this casting. I passed on Triangle because of Jaejoong (plus the show just plain sucked imo), on paper this P+P sounds way more interesting. The PD is great, the writer is solid. I'm trying not to get my hopes up.

She'll be MBC golden girl at this rate. LOL

I like her in Empress Ki. Her acting has depth for someone who's around PSH's age and not as popular as PSH.

OMG. YES. COMPLETELY AGREE.

She was mesmerizing in Empress Ki and really owned her character. Triangle...was boring so didn't really care.

I agree with you on all points. In the end, they 'upgraded the cast'. I love Daniel Choi but sadly he doesn't have the profile (aka a fanbase big enough) and now the Big 3 only cast actors with a buzz around them. Same goes for the female lead.

Daniel Choi got a lot of buzz and positive reviews for Big Man though. A lot more than CJH has gotten for his last three roles anyway. I'm sort of glad though since legal dramas aren't my thing.

Really? I had the impression Daniel Choi is the bigger star, and he was the one to decline. Same goes for KAJ.

I'm certainly happy about Baek Jin-hee. But I don't personally think they upgraded from Daniel Choi to Choi Jin-hyuk. I mean, I guess he may be popular this past year, but Daniel Choi is by far the more charismatic actor, at least in my opinion and I'm pretty sure he has the fanbase big enough. All I know is that all his roles are really distinctive and memorable for me, and sadly, Choi Jin-hyuk has only one memorable role for me (in GFB, a drama I never really finished). This doesn't mean I'm not excited to see him excel in a lead role though before he goes off to army :)

Upgraded....?
Okay just because an actor/actress is in their prime or some new actors/actresses gaining more popularity than old one does not mean they upgraded.

I'm pretty sure Daniel Choi as an actor is much more charismatic and make all his characters memorable. Plus Choi has that extra something I can't see in Choi Jin Hyuk...but we'll see..

I think Baek Jin Hee will do fine but this sounds bad but I really like her playing bad guys rather than good guys. I think her face sometimes suited the evil manipulative second lead.

I wonder when she'll be playing in other networks LOL. MBC lurrrve Baek Jin Hee. I'm prepared to see awards hand to her /rolled eyes/

Isn't it far too soon for Choi Jin-hyuk to take on a new project? He's even faster than Lee Jong-seok...

For actors, you have to strike while the iron is hot. You never know how long the hot streak will last. He finally went from supporting actor to second lead this year, so he's going to take the first (good) opportunity at a lead role that he can.

He is the only one to decide about that. Besides he'll be by next year doing his military service, so he can't afford to take a break when he's getting offers.

Well, in his defense, he is enlisting soon so I'm pretty sure he's trying to fit in as much as possible in the time he has left before he peaces for 2 years. The fact that he even has time to take this project is surprising. But could be his last chance to make a splash before he leaves so I'm hoping for the best.

i dont want he takes this project if he will enlist soon. After Kim Nam Gil's Bad Guy, actors should not take any project if their enlistments are close since they may leave before the dramas end.

MBC knows better than us. Despite CJH impending enlistment, they still got him. So can't wait to see his smart and witty banter in a courtroom! CJH fighting!!

Somehow with the new castings this drama looks totally different. It sounded so much more serious when KAJ and Daniel Choi were courted as the leads. Though I am not dismissing the show now, I can't help but wonder...

On another note this could be the last of CJH' we'll be seeing before enlisting- fighting!

Girlfriday, you're killing me...

I have a question about prosecutors because several kdramas have had me scratching my head over some of their actions but I guess I will leave it for the Open Thread and see this take on prosecutors...

I think BJH can easily nail this character if her tough and bitchy role I'm Empress Ki is any indication. I think she does the sweet flower and fierce fighter with equal conviction.

I'm upset she picked this one though, since CJH isn't an actor I'd watch willingly after enduring his blankness all too recently in FTLY. This drama gives me the ANL vibe, mixed with cases and a few laughs. I just wish they didn't call it P&P so someone can decide to actually remake the original. I know we are littered with that in Kdramas but I want one that's set in the 18-1900's!

Hi, what is ANL, please? (I googled it, but I didn't like the answer. I don't think it was correct).

I like her Tanashiri in Empress Ki!! (I mean her acting, not her character)

Yay for her getting lead roles. Dramaland should use underrated actors and actresses more instead idols with no acting talent.

Choi Jin Hyuk and Baek Jin Hee. Although this looks a bit odd, but I think BJH can nail her character well.

Am I the only one who's more than a little bit worried that a drama slated to premiere in less than four weeks hasn't even finalized casting, let alone started filming? I mean, I'm new to kdramaland, but this can't bee good, right?

Otherwise I'm totally excited about Choi Jin-hyuk in a leading role and am going to watch this drama.

They really need to change the name of this drama. My heart aches every time I read the title and know it's not a Korean remake of Jane Austen's work.

I think Baek Jin Hee is really talented, so I'm cheering for her. I would love if there would be a scene in the drama where she turns up her innocent sweet persona to get some people behind bars :D

Hmmm, the initial casting line up sounded more appealing to me. Baek Jin Hee I can warm up to because I've only seen her on Empress Ki and although her character was irritating, I can tell she's a pretty good actress. But as for Choi Jin Hyuk... there's something about him that just doesn't do it for me. I can't put my finger on what it is about him but IMO he seems kind of bland maybe? :\ I haven't seen him as Daddy Gumiho but from what I've seen in Emergency Couple and The Heirs, I'm just not a fan.

Daniel Choi---why you not take 1st lead roles!??!?!?! I just want to see your face on screen for an extended amount of time. It's all I ask.

I like this new pairing, though! I loooooove Baek Jin Hee and am so glad to see her everywhere these days. I hope she takes this on--she'd be so cool as this character-type.

I got excited seeing Pride & Prejudice, Choi Jin Hyuk and Baek Jin Hee all in one sentence then promptly deflated at "no relation to Jane Austen's P&P".
Dream extinguished.

Hopefully it will do better than her first outing as a lead. If it's ratings bomb as much as Triangle's did Baek Jin Hee's days as leading actress may be over before they started. That would be a shame.

I like this couple. Baek-Jin-hee's looks and talent have a surprising power punch on screen. Even though Choi Jin-hyuk has been in rom coms lately, my brain image of him is Papa Gu in all his radiant mane of glory and intensity. Bring that into the courtroom!

If Baek Jin-hee's portrayal of Tanashiri was any indicator, I'm sure she can pull off this role. I like her more than Kim Ah-joong anyway. Much kudos for BJH for another lead!

I'm also glad to see Choi Jin-hyuk continuing to garner bigger roles too...although he is green compared to Daniel Choi, I think he has the potential.

I like Choi Jin-hyuk, but watching another drama so soon with him again would be somehow annoying. Sometimes I wish more variety of actors in k-dramas.
And I also don't like the title, I always think of Jane Austen's novel, which I completly love.
