Madam Bbaeng-deok to set screens ablaze in October

Wow, this movie looks steamy, suspenseful and thought-provoking — Jung Woo-sung (God’s Play, Cold Eyes) stars in Madam Bbaeng-deok (English title: Scarlet Innocence), a modern interpretation of a classic Korean fable. In the centuries-old folktale, a girl named Shim Chung is raised by her father, Shim Hak-gyu, after her mother passes away shortly after childbirth. They are poor, but content to have one another. Shim Chung grows into a pure and filial young woman, and when her father begins to lose his sight, she sells herself to some boatmen who intend to sacrifice her to the sea god, so that her father is able to pay to restore his vision.

Shim Chung is indeed thrown into the sea, but the sea god takes pity on her and sends her ashore safely encapsulated in a large lotus flower. She is discovered by an emperor, who falls in love with and makes Shim Chung his bride. Eventually she is reunited with her father, who regains his vision, and the story has a happy ending. From the release of the trailers and Madam Bbaeng-deok’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, it’s clear the movie’s plot and message distinctly diverge from the original.

Jung Woo-sung plays Hak-gyu, a professor who is forced to move to a rural town and to leave behind a wife and child in Seoul after being involved in a scandal at his university. He meets Deok-yi, played by the actress Esom (Santa Barbara, High Heel), a young woman in her early 20s, and he is drawn to her naïvete and innocence. They begin a torrid love affair, and when it comes time for Hak-gyu to return to the city, she is unable to let go. The plot jumps ahead eight years and when Hak-gyu’s vision begins to fail, Deok-yi reappears, seeking revenge.

[Note: The title, Madam Bbaeng-deok, is in reference to a single mother with a son named Byung-deok (nicknamed Bbaeng-deok), who in folklore remarried Shim Hak-gyu after he thought he had lost Chung. Bbaeng-deok’s mother was known to be a cunning, wicked stepmother, much like Lady Tremaine in Cinderella. By naming the characters in this fashion, Esom as Deok-yi, Park So-young (who plays Hak-gyu’s daughter) as Chung-yi, and Jung Woo-sung as Hak-gyu, the writers have neatly made reference to the original folktale. Shim Hak-gyu is more widely known as Shim Bong-sa; bong-sa refers to a blind person.]

Deok-yi transforms from a sweet, young woman experiencing her first love at the beginning of the movie to an obsessed and seductive femme fatale by the end, and both Esom and Jung’s powerful characterizations in the trailer have reeled me in. In addition to being able to draw out nuanced performances from his actors, writer/director Im Pil-sung (Hansel and Gretel) seems to have a deft eye for visual appeal; the cinematography is artistic and stunning.

While I love me some Jung Woo-sung (Oppa!), I am actually anticipating Esom’s performance more — from the little I’ve seen, Deok-yi feels like a career-defining role.

Madam Bbaeng-deok is set for a wide domestic release in October 2014.

I am so curious about what Esom is going to do with this role. The visual looks stunning, but this kind of plot really makes me flee very fast (the innocent woman turned into femme fatale). I will definitely watch this for the cast but it's also time for me to discover more Korean directors…
I wonder if Esom is going to be really successful with this… I can't wait to see what her career is going to be like!

The movie has a striking similarity to another movie that came out this year "Innocent Thing" staring Jang Hyuk and Jo Bo-Ah...

Thorn immediately came to mind for me as well! I don't know why exactly... I watched that movie because of jang hyuk but fell in love with Jo bo ah by the end. She really impressed me with her acting. I hope esom does well in this role too. She hasn't really wowed me with any of her other roles yet

Jo Boa is really turning into a young actress to watch - I'm so impressed by her in Surplus Princess, and she's made her mark across a variety of roles for someone who is literally only 4 projects into her career.

Jung Woo Sung is great in whatever he does but can we ever see him in a film where good things happen to his character and we can be happy along with him? He's always broken my heart going through all kinds of angst. I'd rather he melt my heart with that smile.

I know right, he wins your heart at first glance just to break it in million pieces on the next scene. Well, he is worth it. ;-)

The most famous American version of this story, 'Fatal Attraction', had a more mature crazy woman as the "femme fatale." The same story has been done dozens of times since then. All a question of how well executed the story is.

I am not clear how this movie can claim to be based on a fable that does not, at first reading, have anything at all to do with the plot of the movie. Am I missing something here?

When I started reading the post, I thought it would be the story about the daughter too. I was not expecting them to tell the dad's side of the story. Maybe there is more to it than what is shown in the trailer.

Can someone make a comedy movie based on the daughter's story please....

I am just so happy to see JWS back on a screen and looking as good as he does. I swear, the man only gets better (and hotter) with age.

Esom's role looks interesting as well and the trailers have absolutely reeled me in.

Hoping this is available to watch internationally not too long after its release.

I don't know why but for some reason when I looked at the posters and stills I thought Kim Ki Deok would be the director. It just looks like something he would make. Well, I'm fine with it not being his movie since I can't really seem to get into his latests projects.

Well, anyways I'm excited for this!

Wow. This movie sounds really depressing.

No matter how pretty it is, I won't be able to watch it. I just can't bear to fill my brain with this kind of stuff anymore. :-(

If it had a redemptive arc, that'd be different. Too bad they cut that part out.

Seeing awcoconuts exclaim 'Oppa' surprised me. For some reason I thought she was a 'he' all this while.

The movie sounds very intriguing. :D

As noted above, this does sound a LOT like the Jang Hyuk/Jo Boa movie Innocent Thing (and Jo Boa was impressive in that too)

I've liked Esom ever since White Christmas, she was a total rookie but had a striking screen presence and an ability to turn it cold......girl is not a cookie-cutter starlet, and I look forward to seeing what she'll do here.

I don't see much of Esom because unlike her other model-turned-actor colleagues she seemed to have completely over to films but I am looking forward to her performance in this too. I'll keep my out for this one, I also want to give it a watch.

I can't blame the model-actor cohort (especially the girls) for switching over to film.....network tv simply doesn't have any lead roles for non-idols who weren't well-known child stars, at least it didn't have any in the last two years. (barring a single exception - the fact that she has an acting career, forget the continued lead status, baffles me)
