Kolorful Palette: Autumn concerto [Cantabile Tomorrow]

I’ve decided to rebel this week and resist the temptation to draw another new drama (even though there were several). The weather in my part of the world has been miserable lately, and Cantabile Tomorrow is the perfect kind of comfort food. Even when our characters are entrenched in the midst of drama it’s still a show that feels sweet and warm, and some days that’s a very welcome thing.

Out of all the seasons, I tend to find fall the most difficult because I can’t help but feel like it’s constantly portending the impending doom that is winter (can you tell I’m a summer person?). When I’m out scurrying around in the cold, wet air and begrudging the sky its grayness, pretty much the only thing that makes me feel happy is the beautiful colors everywhere (I try not to think about the fact that the foliage is so lovely because summer is over and it’s dying). Since I love colorful leaves so much I’ve been trying for weeks to find a good autumn-y scene to draw, but I haven’t had a ton of luck. I finally decided that I wasn’t going to wait any longer for the perfect shot (which probably doesn’t exist) so I settled for the one above, which at least somewhat fits the bill.

I may have chosen this scene a bit shallowly, but I like it for other reasons too. For one, I really liked what this whole interaction displayed about the couple. Yoo-jin has just caused a big upset by removing all of Nae-il’s belongings from his apartment, but as soon as something serious happens they both forget that incident in an instant. No matter what stupid things these two do, they still care about each other, and they forget the little things when they need to.

I also liked the obvious, which is that Yoo-jin is finally having an awakening regarding Nae-il (we hope!). It hurt a little to watch Nae-il compare him to others who have treated her badly (which I don’t think he quite deserves) but I do think extreme measures are required when it comes to someone as emotionally obtuse as Yoo-jin. It doesn’t seem like this is a trauma that Nae-il will get past without the support of someone she trusts and respects, but I’m pretty curious how Yoo-jin will go about helping her once he takes the situation seriously (wanting to help and knowing how are two completely different things). I think he’s going to have to learn how to healthily emote if he wants to do much good, so I guess they’ll actually be helping each other. Hopefully there’s music involved!

I’m actually glad that it took this long for Nae-il’s story arc to really take off because it feels like such an appropriate way to start off the second half of this drama. During the first episode it was Yoo-jin that was struggling and in a very deep rut, and Nae-il’s free-spirited playing was what inspired him to climb out. He would still be stuck if it weren’t for her, and now it’s almost like she’s learning her own lesson from him (although in her case, her mental blocks are a lot more serious). Besides their music, they also do so much for each other when it comes to personal and emotional growth. In the beginning Yoo-jin was extremely uninterested when it came to real relationships with pretty much anyone, and even though he’s still terrible at it, at least there’s the desire. These two really are the sum of their parts, and despite being so independently gifted, they need each other to achieve everything they’re capable of. Sounds like a perfect match to me.

I admit that I rolled my eyes when Yoo-jin rushed in to save Nae-il from almost playing the piano to death, and I didn’t enjoy that scene as much as I should have. I don’t blame this drama specifically since I actually admire Nae-il’s musical obsession (and know such people do exist) but the over-abundance of sick protagonists in Korean dramas has left me a little jaded. Usually some noble idiot spends too long in the rain (which is apparently almost fatal) and some hero has to rush in and nurse her back to health when no one else could. I used to love such scenes, but alas, I can no longer get so invested in something that seems like such a minor illness. I loved Yoo-jin’s earnestness throughout the scene (any emotionally revealing moment of his is very welcome) but I couldn’t quite shut up the voice in the back of my head that was saying, “Is this really happening?” Oh well, maybe my brain will have better luck next time.

Even though I think they’re a great couple, I do think Yoo-jin has to smarten up, and he certainly can’t fall into a confused jealous rage any time he sees Nae-il talking to another guy. It makes sense since he’s been so introverted and emotionally stunted for so long, but he’s got to come to terms with his feels eventually. Meanwhile, a part of me can’t help but root for Yoon-hoo just a bit. Couldn’t he get the girl for just a while and then let Yoo-jin take over? I’m biased towards him purely because he’s a cellist (I’m a bit cello-obsessed) but wouldn’t it be great if we got to watch them play multiple cello-piano duets? Yoon-hoo’s appearance as a conductor may have been great story-wise, but I was honestly kind of devastated. We’d better still get more cello!

Overall though, I’m pretty impressed with the quality this drama has managed to keep up, and it’s still got lots of places to go. I look forward to seeing how that final scene plays out, but ultimately it doesn’t really matter. This is one of those shows where I know I can just kick back and enjoy the ride.

I am surprised to see you draw Tomorrow Cantabile again. Thank you. I am enjoying this show not just for Joo Won because I really like all the characters, well...almost all.

Many people are saying this drama has only beautiful people, beautiful buildings and beautiful scenery. I even read that someone griped about the colorful autumn leaves distracting the viewers from what the scene wants to convey, thereby making it shallow. Comments like this show that people just want to hate so much that they throw out logic.

Thankfully, my mind was able to take in the beauty of the scenery while processing the scenes. Living near the equator, I appreciate more these wonderful colors of autumn.

About Yoon Hoo, he will get the girl next week. For a while at least. Not sure about him playing cello but he will definitely be romancing her. Yoo Jin fails to understand Naeil's trauma. I think unless she tells him straight up, he is not going to get it. So he is going to be left in the cold and let's hope he learns somehow to emote like you said.

Uh oh. I didn't expect you were this blind. Don't you realize what this writer is talking about? She is talking about: seasons and people. No lines about the music that inspires and transform the characters as it is supposed to do as a remake.

Take a look at some paragraphs in the middle, then you will see what she says: Hopefully there's music involved! Yes, this is supposed to be a classical music drama remake and it went half way already, and now someone starts hoping to see the music involved. Make sense.

I am not professional, lacks knowledge about music. I am simply a drama viewers and I just think this drama has made me want to listen to classical music more. My favourite would be Yoon Ho's cello playing, sound very nice that I want to use it as my phone ringtones.
The music is brief but I think it is spot on. It conveys the feelings of the character and emotion in each scenes.

I think it’s too much to say that somebody is blind just because you don’t agree with what they say.

I love both the Jdrama and kdrama versions, maybe one more than the other. I think we need to stop comparing the two versions and just enjoy both on their own.

@TSAH: Am I deaf? Unluckily, yes. After 8 eps. I guess that am gonna blind now. You should feel relieved.

@athena: the 2nd part of the 1st comment above is about my comment left at ep 5 or 6 I can't remember. That's why I responded. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother.

I do think colours and scenery are interesting aspect in a drama. It may not be the most crucial thing, but it is an aspect that should not be overlooked. They can convey the right mood at the right time. Beautiful autumn leaves in the background conveys good, happy feeling or beautiful memories. While the scenes of Naeil playing piano in the dark rooms just showed how tangled her mind is. Just few examples.
I love visual art after all so, yeah..

Lol, me too! Autumn's Concerto was SO good. Thats the one that needs to be remade into a k-drama. Its a melo and its gorgeous - that's hallmark Korean!

I felt that during the first few episodes, but episode 8 was just well done. They give me not that regular sweet couple vibe, but that soulmate vibe.

Yes, I'm all for them to be soulmates, although I think in that kind of relationship there can't be room for jealousy/possessiveness, even in romantic context. Soulmates realize and value their common goals too much to feel insecure about each other. In other words, when we understand we are soulmates, we simultaneously realize that Destiny Itself is our protector.

Yeah me too... I only see them as brother and sister so far. That's why I'm not sold (yet, hopefully).
But here's to hope *raises subway sandwich*

I have also been appreciating the lovely autumn colors that they've captured in this drama. Of course, I could just look outside, but that would require me to tear my eyes away from all the gorgeous (male, human) scenery that this drama has to offer!

Anyway, I also was struck by this scene for the same reason: he didn't hold a grudge! I so expected him to still be all cranky, like they left things last time we saw them. But he lets her hold his hand.

As for the playing piano to the point of collapsing on the floor with a near-fatal arm cramp, I agree that it sounds a little ridiculous as soon as you try to apply logic to the situation. But that scene was a really lovely moment for Yoo-jin and Nae-il, so I can let it slide. For the record, I hate (hate hate hate) when characters get sick/nearly die from being out in the rain. That one truly does make me roll my eyes, or more likely, fast forward. So maybe this particular situation was just enough off the beaten path (of kdrama tropes) that it was okay for me. Ha. And it does seem to fit with Nae-il's personality to take things way too far, so that also helps.

The autumn leaves in the background are gorgeous! I love the way they're blurry and Yoojin's face is in focus. I've been paying attention to depth of field in drama photography lately. They love to do these shots with really shallow depth of field so that the only thing crisply in focus is someone's beautiful eyes and everything else is soft focus. V. glamorous.

I agree about the cello.

I hope the show ratings are faring better now! :) I like it though I still find Nae Il's character an oddball, and not in an endearing way. Mini Min Hee is also kind of nutty too. It's difficult to get used to the style of the drama when the characters are either extremely normal or extremely crazy.

I used to against the idea of Joo Won cast as Chiaki in the remake.. but slowly I'm warming up to his potrayal of a much sensitive and contemplative Chiaki (Yoo Jin).
Though I do agree with some people who says that Chiaki is an easy character to potray (compared to Nodame).

It's a lovely drama overall, I love the feel of autumn and warm characters in it. Just like your drawing :) love it.

As Joo Won's fan I also don't think this is his most challenging role. But a conductor/pianist character might be too rare to let go, just think how many actors has opportunity to play this kind of role. So even this drama doesn't get good tv ratings, the role is a nice addition to his filmography. He and his dream to be an acting professor.

Naeil is a more complex character. I am glad the k adaptation put more emphasis on her emotional crisis.

Thanks, Fanderay. I am loving this drama so much. It has really beautiful scenes. I think they’re a great couple too. I find Yoo-jin really sweet when he takes care of Nae-il.

Seems I am the only one who can relate to why Naeil playing piano until her arm severely in pain. Just like how marathon runners who keep running to finish their marathon, sometimes they are exceeding their muscles capability to contract and stretch, hence muscle strain and tear. So that could happen to Naeil too.

I found it funny reading about "playing piano to death". It's hilarious. I don't think it was that serious in the drama, though. Nae Il was really tired and sleepy with hurting arms. After a marathon with the piano (that's a really beautiful comperison!) she was just lying on the floor in place of the bed. We all know that Nae Il is a little bit crazy. I think when she is doing something she is giving her all.
The reaction of Yoo Jin was quite normal and cute. He was just worried about somebody who doesn't get where she has to stop in some aspects. Ther are no boundaries for Nae Il. In the future they will have a lot of this moments. Nae Il is a walking trouble, she brings trouble with her everywhere she goes. That's why she is so sweet.
Such a lovely couple.

@TSAH: sorry to say that your stupidity goes beyond my expectation. Blind and deaf sill can type. Google more before giving sb lesson.

When I said I was gonna blind, I meant I wouldn't watch your precious drama anymore and leave you in peace. You were just too stupid to see what I meant, and kept dragging in me into war of words? Don't regret if I change my mind.

Go check your brain first and grow up. You must have had some problem with that.

I have been loving this drama. It evokes the same powerful feelings I felt when I read the manga; in many ways, it does it better because the music selections are so profound. I was worried a bit about the eclectic Holstein dragging the plot along with his indecision but realized during the course of his residency within the plot that I truly enjoyed watching the characters interact on screen. So many heart. So much feels!
