Mr. Back’s presto abs and bathtub full of gold

I’m not entirely sure that this drama has thought through anything beyond its logline — grandpa becomes young again — but at least Shin Ha-kyun (All About My Romance) seems to be enjoying the hell out of playing up the transformation. MBC’s newest Wednesday-Thursday drama Mr. Back premieres tomorrow, and the highlight reel teases some of the first episode’s outrageous (nekkid) hijinks. My favorite thing is that the Scroogey grandpa actually lies in a bathtub full of gold monies. Tell me someone else is singing the Duck Tales theme song right now.

The show is in no way trying to hide its own ridiculousness, so I’ll give it credit for embracing its own absurdity with gusto. Maybe you have no choice in the matter when your story is about a 70-year-old crotchety chaebol grandpa who overnight returns to his 30-something body. Presto, abs! He very eagerly shows them off to his doctor, blaming the transformation on the medicine he gave… only to be carried off to the psych ward for an evaluation.

Gramps is the kind of man who makes enemies wherever he goes and gives acceptance speeches like, “I got this far in life because I trusted no one!” What a winner. He meets hardworking Candy girl Jang Nara (Fated To Love You) while undercover at a senior center (who knows why), and she treats him like any other grandpa only to be met by the crankiest uppity chaebol ever. A misunderstanding with his playboy son Lee Joon (Gap-dong) gets her fired from her maid job at the hotel, and she and the hero end up in a freak car accident, after which Gramps suddenly comes out of the bath in a whole new forty-years-younger body.

It’s super silly, and I don’t know if the romance is going to spark anything for me. But the father-son stuff looks pretty funny, with Dad scrambling to hide under the covers and affecting an aged voice to fool his son. The thing that makes the transformation less drastic is that it doesn’t seem like a big stretch to me if Shin Ha-kyun were to play Lee Joon’s father in a normal drama (whereas if the character actually became his son’s age it would be weirder but funnier). I expect it to have some heart too, since the rest of his relatives are circling the waters as soon as they hear Dad is missing, while Lee Joon alone worries that his elderly father could be lying in a ditch somewhere. Orrrrr, he rapidly de-aged overnight and is picking up women half his age in random coffee shops — have you ever thought of that?

Mr. Back premieres tomorrow on MBC.

The OTP is gramps and Jang Nara? So, doesn't that make him a creepy old man? Besides if the guy is supposed to look in his 30's why this actor? He looks 40 at least and no amount of manbangs will change that.

I was thinking that too but now I see how well he can transform to 70 yr old gramps and think he was the right choice for this role!

Shin Ha Kyun is indeed exactly 40 years old in real life so you're spot on about his age, Jang Nara is 33 years old in real life, the synopsis says the gramps turns into a man in his 30's, it doesn't say early 30's or late 30's, i think i can surely buy SHK as someone in his late 30's, not only that but i also think he's absolutely the right choice for the role, i'm sure the director have seen SHK's previous works and found out he actually played the same kind of character in the movie 'Devil', in that movie he played an old cranky chaebol who tricks a young man (SHK) into swapping their brains, suffice it to say he totally nailed that role, and besides all that SHK is such a great actor that even if he played a man in his 20's I would buy it.

If you want to complain about his looks, how about you go and check his previous drama, Brain and All About Romance. That would change your opinion how AWESOMEEE and COOL this GRAMPS actually is. I am actually a new fan of him. I watched his medical drama (Brain) in my free time, and suddenly I'm his biggest fan! Then I googled all his works and last week, I finish the 16 episode of ALL ABOUT ROMANCE~he is really an AWESOME,COOLEST actor out there. He can create great chemistry with any heroine and make them shine with him. He won't overshadow them, but bring them to his level~

Hope dramabeans recap this drama! I'm sure this drama will turn gold, because all SHK projects is gold! :)

Totally agree with you! I watched All About My Romance primarily for LMJ & initially, I was a little bit hesitant to watch it since it was my first drama with SHK in it. I wasn't sure if their chemistry would work but oh my gosh, did it work and how! I fell in love with the "fire extinguisher" couple right off the bat and now I'm also a huge fan of his. He's such a brilliant actor & I'm pretty sure he would ace this role, as always. He's not your typical good looking type of a man but he's sooooo darn charming with a killer smile!

And yes, me too, I hope dramabeans recap this drama! Hmmm.....what happen to the "like" button? I miss it!

Even though it's weirdly written, I'm actually looking forward to this to have a good laugh. The dramas I've been watching lately are too depressing.

...I just hope that Jang Nara somehow ends up with Lee Joon, not Shin Ha-kyun. I really don't like oppa romances. :/

What is the definition of 'Oppa Romance'? Because if oppa romance means the guy is older than the girl then ALL K-dramas other than 'Noona romance' fall in the category.

You dont like oppa/ahjusshi romance, but you dont mind noona romance.... You must be a woman? Am i right ?

SHK-JNR age gap = 7 years

Being a woman is not the issue. Plenty of us are women and plenty of us love diversity in both the genres we watch and the types of stories we like in each.

I personally like age gap romances, no matter which of the two is older (even though I prefer older man/younger woman ones), so I do hate this double standard by some, but it comes from mindsets, not our plumbing.

Just like certain male gamers not wanting "girlies to touch our special toys" does not mean men in general or male gamers in general are all immature brats with a woman phobia.

As for the romance, well, we seem to accept loving 400 year old aliens, gumiho, ghosts and other creatures just fine, but we suddenly feel people don't have a right to date if the age gap is big, so yes, I don't get that mindset. I get it as a personal taste issue, but not as a "this is wrong" or "eww" issue.

That said, Redfeather did not get offensive, they just said they don't like it. And I would advice them to not watch it in this case, since the premise does not simply change.

I can't speak for anyone else but since I'm one of those that sometimes get the icky feeling on age gap romances maybe I can try to explain at least my reasons for it.

It is simple, I dislike when there is power or psychological imbalance in the relationship. For instance I couldn't stand SLA because the guy was a kid and he acted like one. I could never really like PMI either however I have no problems with My Spring Days or I Hear Your Voice or FBRS. Even High School King was ok for me because as far as I knew they were on equal standards even though the guy was only 18.

I get your approach, but imbalance itself is normal as long as it is not used to control. All kinds of people form relationships, with differences in many aspects of them. If we go by that, people should not date and cannot love unless they are the same age, have the same education, social status, level of looks, level of fat on their body, same tastes, ideology etc. And most people are not dating their doppelgangers. Abuse is the issue and abuse has nothing to do with age/educational background/looks/weight/social status/money/job etc.

Fox example, if a mature person was hired to teach an immature one of the same age and used that somehow dishonestly (no clue if SLA is like that, I'm just saying), it would be a problem, despite the age gap not being there. Because the imbalance comes from those differences being used to control one with the power one's own privilege gives them, be that one's maturity, age, job etc. So that's where your issues with it come from, which is very reasonable, I just don't feel age itself is to blame for those.

In our case with Mr. Back, I don't see why age is the problem and not the fact that he might be using his higher social status to control the woman's life through his power, which happens in most such romances, without age ever being an issue. Also, him lying about his identity and getting her involved with him under false pretenses is a much bigger problem too. Why is it we can accept jerk chaebol abusing women as a normal romance, and not see the imbalance there, but two nice people being kind to each other is bad just because of age or looks or a job? That's my question.

I don't get why the same audiences who adore all kinds of abusive or control-driven romances and have no problem with other types of imbalances and abuse suddenly find it "wrong" when age is involved. I don't see why how long someone has been alive is somehow a bigger issue in a relationship than how well someone treats another and how much someone loves and respects another.

Which is why a lot of these more offensive "eww" types of comments I see in age gap discussions feel so very dishonest and like a double standard. If one acts like it's morally fine when hot young men/women they are attracted to abuse their partner, but cry "outrage" over older men/women they dislike do the exact same thing, I call bullsh...manure.

0

Yes, I kind of did figure out we were saying the same thing, I just added that in your case, the age isn't the issue, but the abuse. Which is reasonable. So you're not icky over age gap romances, but power gap and abuse romances, in that sense. Even if some of those might also have an age gap, from what I understood.

And yes, I do feel odd about the romance in this, because of the element of deceit and also the reality of him probably dying soon. He will have to get old again by the end, I doubt we'll get a miraculous second chance for him, so where would that leave her? I hope the show can tackle it in a way that does not leave characters miserable or have them ruin one another just to feature romance. We'll see how it goes.

0

Great points from everyone.

"I hope it proves me wrong tackling the subject in a clever way." This is the most important thing in whether drama romances work or not, whether it's romances with a power imbalance or with an age gap. In real life, I've seen how hard these issues can be for some of my friends. But I'm also inspired by my friends who've created really amazing, long-term marriages despite big differences.

I'm always hoping for a show that includes the really dramatic, romantic stuff that happens with an age gap, or cultural/class/economic differences. About 5% of dramas actually try, though!

Orion, I think you didn't understand my thoughts, or I didn't explain very well, sorry, when I talked about the imbalance in the relationship I meant one side has some form of power or control over the other. That is what I don't like.

In SLA that was exactly what happened, at least until ep 8 which was when I dropped the show. That has nothing to do with differences of any kind.

I don't like the abusive leading characters that stalk and scream and are generally rude towards their girlfriends so I never really mix these subjects. Again, it has nothing to do with age.

As far as Mr Back goes, let's wait and see but the premise seems to be he will lie to her? That is already manipulative, it is a form of control. I hope there is no romance in this stage or at least if there is, that the show acknowledges he is being a creep instead of treating it as a joke. I mean, I don't know if you're a woman or a man but just imagine you date someone for a while and later discovers he or she is 30 years older than you. It is different, it's a lot of life experience, it's another stage in life, even if you are an adult, this other person might end up controlling you

Mandy was talking about the ageless characters below on 15 and I think it raises an interesting question, How come we are fine with those? I think I can answer. We are led to believe they are frozen in time emotionally and their maturity levels accompanies their looks. That was my explanation for MGIAG for instance, she was a pure creature that was locked up in a painting for hundreds of years and had very little real life experience. I had a hard time imagining her as a granny. YFAS didn't work so well for me, show tried really hard to sell the alien lived locked up in his own world for centuries but I never really bought it besides I didn't understand exactly how he fell in love either so didn't work very well on the later half even if I loved the first. I also loved the first 2 eps of Gu Family Book but again, that gumiho was not human at all, didn't act like a human, so it was more an ageless creature than a hundred year old human so no icky feeling from me.

Anyway, I hope Mr. Back surprises and proves me wrong tackling the subject in a clever way.

Well, gramps certainly likes screaming.

I actually like Lee Joon now (not in a omg-he's-hot way but omg-he's-good-enough-to-actually-be-a-killer way. Doesn't that roll right off the tongue) but don't want him and Jang Nara together in this. Alternately, as eventually he'll have to return to his older self (right?) I don't want her and Shin Ha-kyun to end up together, though in his younger body I don't see an issue. That is, disregarding chemistry since I'd have to wait and see. Hopefully it'll be one of those shows when both boys fall in love with her and she changes their lives and makes them into better people but moves on after. Like a Nanny Mchphee...but not ugly and with grown men--who might as well be children from the looks of it.

Haha I like how Shin Ha-kyun knows how to have fun with his roles, that might be worth the watch in and of itself, 'cause sometimes I watch actors and want to ask "Why so serious?" in my best Joker voice.

On a shallow note, resisting the urge to jump Jung Seok-won's bones. RAWR

I love Shin Ha-kyun and Jang Nara but after 7 minutes my only feelings are eh, I dunno. I think it would make a good movie, albeit one that's been done before, but as a drama I feel like it will have 1 or 2 episodes of plot and 14 episodes of filler.

Its kind of icky in a sense and hilarious in another. So a 70 year old man falls for a 30 year old woman? He's more than double her age so even if he looks younger, he really isnt. But then I've enjoyed YFAS, MGIAG, etc when the supposed age difference is much larger. I'm actually confused!

Anyway, I think Lee Joon and Jang Nara have chemistry so I may root for them. I'll give it a try and see if the story is able to change my perception...

The lesson is : Love is happy thing to everyone, rich or poor, old or young, pretty or ugly, down to earth, you get lovely, brighten life and even poor, for surviving and to be successful , fight for it.
Hope it getting high rate as how good it is.
