2014 SBS Drama Awards

And now for SBS’s awards! I thought yesterday’s ceremony over at MBC was a bit lackluster, but maybe that was more about not really loving MBC’s dramas of the past year and not having seen very many of their winners. It’s a different story over at SBS, which had a bunch of shows (and more stars), although they did have to compete for star attendance with KBS, who had their Acting Awards on the same night.

There were no big surprises or upsets, although I thought a few titles were overlooked. But you can’t give everyone an award, no matter how hard you try to rearrange the categories to fit them all in, so I suppose leaving some dramas of the winners list is inevitable.

But overall, I’d say it was a safe night, for both awards and for fashions, because nothing says pretty-but-conventional like bridalwear, and let’s face it: It was pretty much the Night of a Thousand Brides. I don’t think I’ve seen such an overwhelmingly black-and-white red carpet, with almost everyone dressed in grayscale, and that’s not even exaggeration. Of course, they all look fabulous, but I was just dying for some color.

MCs Lee Hwi-jae, Park Shin-hye, Park Seo-joon

Ahh, Jeon Ji-hyun wins at everything—the Daesang, for her triumphant return to television in You From Another Star, and also the red carpet, for being perfection down to her tiptoes (seriously, those shoes!). Everything she wears is always so perfectly fitted to her—not too tight, but tailored to a tee. I almost feel bad for anyone else who went all-white (and that’s aside from the samey-sameness of attending a bridal convention) because Jeon Ji-hyun pulled it off, she won the biggest prize of the night, and she set the bar. Sawry, everyone else.

I have nothing to complain about with Kim Soo-hyun (You From Another Star), but I also have little to say, because he kind of always looks like this, right? I suppose there are worse things to be known for than always showing up at red carpets immaculately dressed and looking sharp.

You’d think Shin Sung-rok were the third-billed star on You From Another Star from the attention he garnered out of it, but that’s the perk of being a scene-stealer. He may have done more actual acting in Liar Game but (1) at least he got an award for something this year, in the absence of a tvN award ceremony, and (2) I did really love his over-the-top villain in Star. He looked like he was loving every second of it, and it’s hard not to find that kind of enjoyment infectious… even if the joy is represented in plotting, kidnapping, and killing people left and right. Oh, and he sure looks good in a tux.

I don’t know why, but some actors skip the red carpet and just head to the awards, and when that happens I am super sad because what about my pictures?? Where’s my eye candy? Yes, it’s all about me, Lee Je-hoon (Secret Door), who only went to the ceremony and deprived me of the chance to gaze upon his formalwear-clad beauty! I guess I’ll just have to stick to the thousands of screencaps I took of his face in Secret Door. Sigh. (I know, life is hard.)

Same goes for you, Song Chang-eui (Thrice Married Woman), who even wore a snazzy hat to accept his acting award. Granted it kind of makes him look like he’s bald, but maybe it’s still recovering from the fiasco of bleaching it for Dr. Frost (which apparently made it disintegrate).

Lee Jong-seok did the same thing, only showing up at the ceremony, where he picked up a couple of awards. His SBS special award is for the two SBS dramas he headlined this year, Doctor Stranger and Pinocchio… though I have to think it’s really more for Pinocchio, right? (I didn’t watch Stranger, but I have been repeatedly warned against it, so I’m keeping my distance.)

Okay, Park Shin-hye (Pinocchio) also wears white but, like Jeon Ji-hyun, manages to avoid looking like a bride in it. (I mean that in a positive sense; we have nothing against brides, but it just gets boring seeing so many wedding gowns at every red carpet event, which tend to fall on the safe side of fashion.) Her hair, makeup, accessories—they all work, and she glows. Love the touches of gold.

On the other hand, Kim Yoo-jung (Secret Door) kind of looks like a child bride in her dress, which I dislike immensely. We’ve seen her choose some gorgeous dresses for other events so she’s got it in her to be stylish and classy, but this seems so boxy and prim. Well, it did look nigh well freezing on the red carpet (lots of photos of shivering stars) so maybe the sleeves and the high neck came in handy?

For instance, Yoochun (Three Days) looks so cold he’s about to cry, and at least he’s totally covered up. Won’t somebody hold him and warm him up? I volunteer as tribute.

Y’know, I suppose I don’t really love what he’s wearing or find it extra-special enough to explain highlighting his picture here. I guess I just like looking at Yoochun, Chunface notwithstanding. (Or maybe it’s because of it?)

Han Ye-seul looks like she stepped right out of Birth of a Beauty and its exaggerated, stylized fashions, where she looks amazing in every frame. The show marks a nice return for her; the plot is utterly silly, but she’s bright and likable in it, and has fabulous chemistry with Joo Sang-wook.

I do fear for her ankles every time she skips along wearing monster heels like this in the show, even though she seems to be managing so far. The dress is twee and adorable, and that length is super cute on her (sadly, these designs do not work for the short, since then it just becomes a hoop skirt).

I had a weird head-tilty moment when I saw Kang So-ra and a bunch of other young stars in quick succession on the red carpet (directly below), because they’re much more known for their breakout roles in tvN shows this year and I was confused why they’d be here at SBS. But she did have an SBS drama with Doctor Stranger, even though everyone totally associates her with Misaeng right now. Normally I’d be all over this flower-patterned dress, but there’s something that feels not quite right, near the ribcage/bodice area, like it should either be more fitted or more draped. It also looks like a daytime tea dress more than a formal gown, though the red heels are a nice touch.

I saw Kang Haneul and immediately thought of Misaeng, and had to rack my brains to recall that he also did Angel Eyes earlier in the year. I like him lots, but I do not like his look here, with the long boxy jacket and the unkempt-looking hair. Meh.

Yay for Han Groo, who did garner a little notice with SBS’s A Warm Word earlier in the year before making a much bigger mark with Marriage Not Dating on cable. She’s proving to be quite the chameleon, which should serve her really well in the future. This dress looks familiar, but she’s rocking it. You hold your head up high and strut, girl. You’ve earned it.

Park Seo-joon also acted in A Warm Word, though again, it was a tvN cable drama that really broke him out (Witch’s Romance). I love the way he’s at once totally boyish (it’s the face, and his crinkly smile) but also totally manly. Rawr.

I do think this gown is lovely on Nam Bo-ra (Only Want to Love), and she’s styled well and looks great. It’s just that Nam Bo-ra often wears exactly this kind of princessy thing, all prettiness and full skirts. Even if all she did was try a slinkier cut like Han Groo’s gown, it would change things up a lot for her.

I think this is a step up for Han Sun-hwa (God’s Gift–14 Days) from the previous night, but only by a hair. I don’t understand the frilly feathery thing she’s wearing around her hips, which from a distance kind of resembles a hairy diaper.

On its own, I love this chic look for Seo Ji-hye (Punch). And on a night where everyone was wearing blue, for instance, it would have stood out nicely. It’s just that few people stood out in a sea of black and white this night.

That said, I do like Lee Young-ah (Run Jang-mi) in this black dress. I can’t quite figure out what it’s doing, but I like the loose draping and the layering in the back, which gives it a modern casual-glam silhouette.

What does it say that I kind of dig this crazy patterned thing on Oh Hyun-kyung (A Mother’s Choice), because at least it’s not boring? It’s part stuffy chaebol mother-in-law, part wild Victorian brothel owner.

I don’t really know how to feel about this number worn by So Yi-hyun (Three Days). On one hand, it’s different—it’s structured and sharp and the checkered top area, which goes around to the back, is interesting. On the other hand, it’s yet more black and white, and it looks like her skirt is wearing a miniskirt.

Oh, thank god for color. I’m sure Lee Yubi (Pinocchio) couldn’t have predicted that this electric fuschia dress would actually fade into the backdrop, but when she’s not posed against that wall, that dress is a breath of fresh air. It’s young and modern, and she makes it slightly edgy (slightly!) with the cuff and her bob.

My, isn’t her Pinocchio co-star Kim Young-kwang looking spiffy. I know he’s a tall guy, but somehow he looks extra-super-monstrously tall here, in his sleek lines and slim tux. He also seems much older all of a sudden. They grow up so fast.

Yay for more color, as worn by Choi Jung-yoon (Cheongdam-dong Scandal), even if I’m not quite as sold on it as with Lee Yubi’s. I like most of it, except those… bowtie-things at her waist, which seem unnecessary. But pink!

Im Sung-un, her co-star in the daily drama Cheongdam-dong Scandal, dials it up with a fire-engine red that looks like it was sewn onto her body, that sucker is so structured and tightly fitted.

Unfortunately, that is the last of the color for the night (I know! So little color), and we’re back to white for Jang Young-nam (Goddess of Marriage)…

…and also for Hwang Jung-eum (Endless Love), who, by the way, is way too young to look this frumpy. Wang Ji-won may have gotten away with this split-sleeve weirdness yesterday, but this is how I usually feel about the look, which is a big fat meh. With the buttoned cuffs at the end, it just looks like you’ve run afoul of a sharp corner on your way to the party, or maybe been attacked by an angry bird.

Here’s her co-star Jung Woong-in , who looked super happy to receive his acting award for Endless Love.

I think I like the overall effect of Clara’s (Emergency Couple) better than any of the individual parts, which feel a little messy. But it’s a dramatic look and stands out (and out, and out).

At first I was surprised that SBS would give Ahn Jae-hyun recognition for You’re All Surrounded when nobody else did, but then I remembered You From Another Star and figured that must be the reason he was given a New Star award. And why not get in a little movie promo while we’re at it, with him striking a model pose a la Fashion King.

Jin Kyung had a couple of SBS projects too, with It’s Okay, It’s Love and then Pinocchio. The dress is okay.

Aw, did Lee Kwang-soo pick up his It’s Okay, It’s Love co-star Sung Dong-il from his night job working security at an apartment building to make it to the ceremony? Or did Sung Dong-il just forget that there was a black-tie event he was supposed to rent a tux for, and decide to come anyway?

Yes, please. I don’t know who you are, Seo Ha-joon (Only Want to Love), but wow do you look fabulous. Normally I’d think brown tones are too casual for an awards ceremony, but I love this look, and it’s so well-tailored. Strut on.

I don’t watch Cheongdam-dong Scandal, as it’s a long-running daily drama, but I’ve heard about it here and there and it was named for a few awards. Here’s Seo Eun-chae in a black lacy gown; she looks pretty, but I feel like it might age her a little (she’s 27).

I almost thought Lee Joong-moon (Cheongdam-dong Scandal) was Cha Tae-hyun in that first picture; he’s not an actor I’m familiar with, but he sure looks happy to be there.

You can never cast Jang Hyun-sung and have me not think he’s gonna backstab our hero, or be a surprise twist (that isn’t actually a surprise), which is just his niche now in dramaland. It’s what he did in Three Days and Secret Door, and if dramas really wanted to surprise, they’d cast him as the suspicious good guy who never does anything evil. Now that would mess with our minds.

Aw, Kim Ji-young (Punch, Temptation, Doctor Stranger) makes me want to be a kid again so I can get away with wearing fancy party dresses with tights and Mary Janes. Of course, when I was actually a kid I hated dressing in fancy party dresses and always put up a fight, but that’s beside the point. What would adulthood be without the wistful regrets?

This boy! So adorable! You may recognize Lincoln as the little boy from Modern Farmer, and if these pictures are anything to go on, he’s got quite the spiffy future in store for him. Most debonair seven-year-old ever.

Seo Ha Joon looks great and the reason none of us have seen him is because he was in crazy Princess Aurora. *stays away because it's a mess and he probably died* BUT he was really adorable with Onew in Laws of the Jungle. :)

woooo pretty glad they didn't split the daesang award.
Pretty obvious JJH would be getting it since she ended up being able to attend.
Still think MLFTS was really overrated, but no doubt JJH was amazing and most definitely deserves her award!

I don't think there was any doubt that JJH would get the Daesang, especially once it was announced she would be attending.

I am a little disappointed the main cast of God's Gift weren't acknowledged, but since LBY won the Daesang last year i suppose they needed to share the love. I think GHJ didn't win anything for Master's Sun last year so it wouldn't be the first time a great performance was overlooked.

Kim Jim hoon was a presentor. There were rumours of him and park shin bye vacationing together in cebu after FBND. They stayed behind when other casts left cebu. I wonder if they are still together. BTW rumours from her cebu based fans tweets who saw them in cebu.

I generally do not like pink but Lee Yubi makes it interesting! Her dress is the only non-boring dress I can see here. Why do Koreans only stick to black and white in these kinds of award shows?

I love Kang Sora's dress! She's bold enough to wear prints and shows all the right curves without being haughty. Most of the stars here I recognized from their cable dramas...that really says a lot, doesn't it? Cable dramas are really getting more popular these days and I find them more entertaining than cookie-cutter-dramas of big networks, except maybe IOIL which deserved more love from the network award giving bodies.

Allow me to copy this one particular line written by @Chandelier in the "2014 MBC Drama Awards" post, without her permission of course, I hope she doesn't mind, but I really like what she wrote.

"If your bias doesn’t win then it’s not valid!!!"

So true, haha.

It’s okay to not like an actor that many others like (I’ve got a gazillion actors that I don’t like but many others love) but it’s NOT okay to attack this same actor just because you are sour that your bias didn’t win anything. That is just low class and of no standard.

Just for the record, between Jung and Park’s acting, I favour the latter’s, anytime.

Anyway, what is this award comparing to those awards Park had won for himself earlier on, not one but two (if I’ve not mistaken), both judged by professional film critics? I trust no favours were allowed there. Don’t tell me all these professionals in the industry are his fans.

I bet Mr Park don’t mind handing this Top Excellence award over to your Jung if you so desperately needs it for your bias, maybe you need the award to prove something.

Okay guys,i f your bias/favorite actor didn't get that award just pls don't humiliate other actors who got the award. They might be good for you but there are other better actors who can pull the awards too. Yuchun deserves the award, it doesn't mean JIS didn't attend, that's why he didn't won. That's a mess tho. Its a foolish arguement. I mean its a fallacy. 3days was an action -thriller drama w/no romance centered on its plot. But the character of Yoochun there is so strong and he had portrayed it at his best. He really do deserved that award!!! Congrats again ^_^.

Did anybody notice that God's Gift 14 Days was snubbed? How come Lee Bo Young & Jo Seung Woo did not win anything let alone get nominated. That's totally unfair. Their acting was superb. Altho the show didn't do well (only because of the stupid ending) but still the acting was good.

I'd recommend watching Dr. Stranger. Like King2Hearts, it takes up the issue of tensions between North and South Korea--with U.S. as a key player in these tensions. Lee Jong Suk essays his role well.

Even late, congratulations for the winners !!
I just realize many things. One of them is You're All Surrounded and Doctor Stranger don't get any prizes in this award (except for Ahn Jae Hyun, which also get for YWCFAS and Lee Jong Suk also for Pinnochio). The actors and actresses for that two dramas did good job and must be earned for it.
I'm not sure to say this one (because stations won't read this, perhaps). But, when they gave good ratings but don't get any prizes, it's too bad and sad. Just being almost slave. SBS, What's Your point and your aim to give awards? It's just because they didn't come to award even being invited? Kang So Ra also came.
