Kim Hee-sun courted to be Kim Yoo-jung’s Angry Mom

Hm, this is an interesting (potential) casting—I’m not quite sure I see it yet, but I’m intrigued.

Kim Hee-sun (Wonderful Season, Faith) is the name being circulated as the titular mother character in MBC’s upcoming drama Angry Mom, which is the drama about a mother going back to high school to help her bullied daughter. The daughter role will be played by Kim Yoo-jung (Secret Door) (we’d known she was considering), and the two Kims could make for a really cute mother-daughter pair.

A representative from MBC announced the casting possibility, and Kim Hee-sun’s management confirmed that she had received the offer and is in the process of reviewing the synopsis. The mother character was once a legendary badass in her teenage days—and as a Busan girl, she would’ve been extra rough-and-tumble. Daughter to a sashimi-restaurant-owner mother who loves to swear and a father with a rap sheet for fighting, Angry Mom inherits her parents’ penchant for cursing, quick temper, and sashimi knife skills.

As a young mother, she’s the kind of person who prefers dramas to news or current events. But when she finds out that her daughter is being victimized by bullies at school, she decides to do something about it directly, and what ensues is a positive, “upbeat and poignant” story that seeks to also highlight trouble spots in South Korea’s educational system.

The thing for me is, Kim Hee-sun looks like a young mom, but not a young mom who can go back to high school and pass for Kim Yoo-jung’s classmate. Okay, not many thirtysomething actresses can do that, but I’d thought of someone like Jang Nara—maybe it’s her tininess that adds to her aura of youth—because Kim Hee-sun projects a sophisticated, mature image. (Perhaps that’s mostly styling?) Still, she does look awesome for her age (or any age)—she’s 37—and we always joke that she hasn’t changed in the entire time she’s been in the industry, which is twenty years. (For reference, you can see in the photos below how she looked from the early 1990s through this year.)

In any case, I’d be happy to suspend some disbelief if everything else works, and I’ve actually grown to love Kim Hee-sun way more in recent years than in her heyday as the ’90s It Girl; seeing her bubbly, witty personality in variety shows, being outspoken and full of cheeky innuendo, has really made me a fan. So this could be quite the fun drama.

Angry Mom will be a Wednesday-Thursday drama to follow Kill Me, Heal Me (which follows Mr. Back). It premieres in March.

This drama sounds really good. She's beautiful as always. But, I can't imagine she plays energetic student LOL. Anything still possible. I might check this drama whoever the leads because of the interesting story line.

...is there any chance that "go back to school" here doesn't mean the mother is passing herself off as a high school student? Maybe she's a teacher instead?

Because I definitely don't see Kim Hee-sun passing for a high school kid, especially not one close in age to Kim Yoo-jung (who is not even old enough to be in high school, she's a ninth grader and I believe they start high school from grade 10 there)

my too, i guess back to school doesn't mean she become student, there's no mom that could look as high school student on real life no matter how young she is

Could also mean she never finished high school and decided to enroll again to watch over her daughter.

I can't help but think how similar this sounds to 17 Again, but minus the time-travelling part.

When I first saw the image, I thought it was Oh Yeon Seo.
Both gorgeous creatures, tho :)

"someone like Jang Nara—maybe it’s her tininess that adds to her aura of youth" Can't agree more. Many Korean actresses don't seem to age but I think Jang Nara is the epitome of baby faced beauty.

I don't even know if it's tininess (word?) that makes Jang Nara look so ageless - Gong Hyo-jin is quite tall, but also as youthful-looking now as she was ten years ago.

I'd quite like a drink from whatever fountain of youth they've been chugging, thank you very much.

I assume all Korean actresses use that same combination of things as they get older.....but with JNR and GHJ, if it is indeed PS then I want to applaud their surgeon. They don't look like they had anything done!

I totally agree that JNR is the epitome of baby faced (likely great genes) but I don't think Kim Hee Sun is particularly baby faced. It seems like fillers + botox are de rigeur in Kdrama industry so I wouldn't at all be surprised if she was just extremely judicious about their use. And, to clarify, I don't think plastic surgery is bad so long as it is an improvement and not disfiguring.

I love Kim Hee Sun - she's truly beautiful and I enjoy her acting and her personality. I can't see her as a high school student, but we'll see.

I could never see Jang Nara as the mother of a teenager, though. Not at this age. Gong Hyo Jin, yeah. Especially a kick-ass one.

@JoAnne - I have to remind myself Gong Hyo-jin's actually played a mother a couple of times, to kids who would be in their teens now (most notably Seo Shin-ae). So this is not that much of a stretch...

That being said, I think JNR and GHJ are about the same age? I think it's a bit of a dilemma who to cast. You can't possibly have someone who looks both like a mum and a high-school student. The role sounds interesting though. The drama could be a potential hit seeing how the Korean public seem to prefer dramas focusing more on the female lead nowadays i.e. Come! Jang Bori, The Legendary Witch and etc.

But still, let me grieve for a moment that JNR wasn't cast.

I think mostly a set of good genes.

yeah there been plenty of comments in various forums putting forth Jang Nara's name as a perfect lead for the drama, but it was more a hope than anything as she already done two back the 'baek' drama for MBC and making it three in a row even if she has stamina and free time to do so, unlikely indeed. I have to say though it going to take a lot a supended belief to take Kim Hee-sun as a high school student and one just accepted by other students and teachers, I mean there only so much they can do with soft focus shooting and makeup and that only in those dramas that have highschool flash backs, here I am guessing she going to have to pass as one for major parts of entire episodes. The drama of course has to be very much humor based, that is the only way it can work at all.

I think that most mom's have had that fantasy at one time or another, of secretly being by their there child's side to shield him/her from harm.

Taking bets on the male lead's character... a chaebol school teacher?

(assuming the daughter's dad is out of the picture, that is)

My bet is on.....a cranky high school principal who is scarred by his past but then you know the drill.

I'm guessing the daughter's dad is out of the picture simply because it's a Kdrama. We romance or we die!

Having the male lead be a cranky principal or even another student's dad would just be too realistic. I'm kind of starting to see why everybody I know IRL is so dismissive of Kdramas... but I digress.

...another student's chaebol dad? And you are right, Angry Mom will have no Angry Dad in the picture.

I don't think kdramas are inherently any more ridiculous than some Western forms of entertainment, but it is amusing to know the tropes this well.

I vote for a dad.

Or a principal.

Or a chaebol.

Kdramas are just full of cliches :-)

Aw, I don't know why I almost believed they'd just go for Jang Nara because it's MBC. She's the only actress who can look the part of a high school student and a mom of a teenager. Too bad; it surely would've been a great casting choice if they went for it.

Kim Hee-sun doesn't even pass off as someone in their late 20s, so it's going to be a huge stretch to believe she can play a high schooler. But I love the premise enough to try it out anyway. I think it's going to be great if done right.

I'm trying to cut back on dramas a little because of school stress but it's hard. It's always the synopsis or cast that make me think "Okay this is a must, I will make time for it" but how many is it now...

If Kim Hee Sun signs on... It will be very very difficult to resist D: Yet I still hope she signs on... I do wonder how they will make her look like a high schooler. It's seems to be stretching it but hey convince me otherwise.

I wish we could see her in something more elegant that would fit her style. Like we saw Kim Hee Ae in Secret Love Affair. I'm not asking for some chaebol lady drama, but hey a more sophisticated and elegant melodrama? Yes please.

Maybe it's just me, I don't know, but Kim Hee-sun and Kim Yoo-jung kind of bare a resemblance to each other. Maybe it's the shape of their faces? They would make a great mother-daughter pair, but how will KHS go back to high school, unless they through in some body-swapping as well, which I doubt. Still, this sounds fun. I kind of want KHS to sign on now.

You 're back-dated, don't you know there are so many cosmetic treatments around the market like : botox injects, lifting, tightening, laser etc ...... even the Hollywood stars in their sixties look like in thirties. Maybe there is another great products came-out in the market where they can drink aging essence to maintain their youth. Important is: you must have such a lot of money to play with it.

Jang Nara looks cute but not suits to be mother figures especially to Kim Yoo-jeong. Cute but not very beautiful looks.
Son Ye Jin don't have the elegant and sexy images. I prefer Kim Hee Sun, she had multi-images. From variety shows, I admit that Kim Hee Sun is very beautiful and suits to all the images, sometimes she looks very cute and young to very elegant looks. Now, this drama is about a gangster mom. Wow! suits her more.

I don't mind that Kim Hee Seon to be a mother to Kim Yoo-jung because both of them look-alike and beautiful ladies but if this plot involves that Kim Hee Seon has to act as her daughter 's friend in the high school, I will think it is too weird and impossible. Hope this won't be happen.
Looking at the plot of this drama, it's look interesting and quite different from most of K-dramas these day which always had similar story-lines and Cinderella stories.
I really wish Kim Hee Seon pairing with Kim Yoo-jung in this drama and make it into top-ratings drama.
