Kim Ji-suk rivals Song Jae-rim in Unkind Women

The main love triangle is complete for KBS’s new Wednesday-Thursday drama Unkind Women, due out next month: Kim Ji-suk (Angel Eyes) has been cast to rival Song Jae-rim (Surplus Princess) for the affections of Lee Hana (High School King of Savvy), who plays the granddaughter of three generations of not-so-nice women living under one roof. This drama has undergone a number of casting changes in the last few weeks, but things finally seem to be settling down and the production held its first script read this week with the full cast.

Kim Hye-ja (Mother) plays the matriarch, a cooking teacher with a sharp tongue and two adult daughters. Do Ji-won will go from KBS Monday-Tuesday show Healer right over to this one on Wednesday-Thursday, where she’s been cast as the eldest daughter, a successful news anchor. Chae Shi-ra (Five Fingers) plays her sister, who became a mother at age 20 and grew up alongside her own daughter, played by Lee Hana. And Sohn Chang-min (Feel-Good Day) has been cast as Do Ji-won’s love interest.

Kim Ji-suk will play Song Jae-rim’s half-brother — he’s an announcer with a boy-next-door image who comes from a wealthy family and is blessed with looks, brains, and confidence. He’ll be partly responsible for Lee Hana losing her teaching job, so he sets out to help her because he feels bad. Little by little he’ll fall for her in the process, and the two brothers will end up rivals.

The drama comes from the PD of My Daughter Seo-young and Brain, and the writer of When a Man Loves and Equator Man. Based on creds, it should turn out to be a strong family melodrama; I just hope it’s the heartwarming kind and not the histrionic kind. If by unkind we’re talking about four smart women who speak their minds, I’m all for that.

Unkind Women follows King’s Face in February.

This guy has been playing second fiddle for faaaaaar too long. Like he's been getting solid roles in the business for over 5 years now and still hasn't gotten a shot at a leading role? Such a bummer.

The very least they can give him is a lead role in a weekend drama... Hopefully this one can be a stepping stone. I really want to watch this for him, but I'm not sure how I feel about him romancing Lee Hana :(

I was going to say he was a lead in "Wonderful Mama", but now that I think of it, I'm not sure he is. He is one of the main (adult) children though... I'm starting that right now, so no idea if he gets the girl or not. Hope so. He'd better.

I know! He is a wonderful actor. Do you think that, despite being quite attractive, he is not "pretty" enough, according to conventional tastes?

One of the things that I like about him is that he looks real. I have trouble getting used to the homogenous plastic surgery looks of so many actors.

0

Yes, he looks normal and that might be his weak point in K drama land. But if that were the case, there is something so odd about judgement of beauty. I watch Healer which receive much attention but I just put off the main lead actress's PS all over her face. Maybe it might be hard for non Asian to catch this but I( an Asian who were born and raised there) see the ugliness in faces with many PS. It is so unnatural. I see beauty in so called Asian eyes and not so perfect nose lines. After all, we are all human.

0

Yes.. he don't have that pretty enough aura but seems I always fall for this type of man. Haha. I love his 'manly' face & I prefer him over other actors that always get leading role.

@atz:

I do see the PS too. I don't really watch those dramas if I can help it. I'm not watching both Healer and Pinocchio for the same reason and I didn't watch YFAS too. I think if the PS looks natural I wouldn't be bothered, but if it doesn't even the best acting cannot distract me from it. But I'm probably part of a minority.

He got the girl in that drama w Han Ji Hye, called: I hate you but it's fine.

When Surplus Princess ended so many people screamed "Next time Song Jare Rim gets the girl please!"
Both guys just never got the girl before, it seems..

Can he be the lead finally? He never gets the girl it's so sad. His acting is good too. I prefer him over Jae Rim, looks-wise and acting too. I like Song Jae Rim, but he could definitely improve his acting.

Sigh. I've been waiting for him to play a lead. Dude's been typecast hasn't he? Maybe he should try for an awesome villain role instead? Like Kim Kang-woo in Story of a Man or something? The shipper wars will probably be unanimously in Song Jae-rim's favor. My underdog instinct is ready!

That's because the shipper wars happen in the juvenile section....of course Jae rim will be the hands down winner if most of the audience is in their teens and twenties....It would be nice to see Kim Ji suk play a lead because he's pretty much the personification of 2nd lead syndrome...

Yet another second lead role for Kim Ji Suk. Who is also a relative of the male lead. Well at least he's got the experience for it.

Not a fan of him being a second lead AGAIN. Nor am I pleased with the writer, but I'll take it. I will now watch at least 4 episodes instead of skipping it altogether.

Oh yeah this is one to watch....I wonder if Jae rim's acting skills are up to having Kim Ji Suk as a romantic second lead...that's some competition....

Ok, so the one article I saw about this called him 남주인공... does this mean he's actually the lead? I ask for scientific purposes, of course ;-)

One of the great things that Ki Ji Suk does is to bring out the complexity and vulnerabilty in characters that you might normally dislike. He did a great job of that in Personal Taste.

Come on Kim Ji-Suk! I was going to skip this! Second lead again?! (Honestly, I never thought I'd be such a fan after first seeing him in Personal Touch. Now I don't care to watch the dramas of the actor I followed into that one, but want to see all KJS is in...)

You see, I'm all for that (KJS for the win!), but isn't the main lead an actor that never gets the girl as well? Know what'd be nice? If they spent the time to develop a girl that loved the second lead, was there for him during his inevitable heartbreak and rejection, and who he realized was what he always wanted.

...So, basically just give him the story of a nice guy lead. I'd totally watch that! And anyway, at some point my attention is always drawn to the secondary and tertiary couples and stays there. It happens all the time. (This is coming from a girl that read HP for Ron and Neville.) If his character can end the show happy and in love, I'm all f

Didnt that once happen in a Kim Min Jong drama? Fans loved the second lead couple so much that they sent letters to the writer, and the storyline was changed!

Ever since that, it gives me a smidge of hope. Just a little bit enough to break my heart.

I've only seen him in Personal Taste. His character was a jerk but he seemed like he had decent range. Would be nice to see him do something a bit different though. Still....who knows how the writer might shake up the second lead?

I'm sorry Kim Ji-suk. Normally, I'd root for Always-Good-But-Surprisingly-Still-Second-Lead-Actors to get a main role. But they put you up against Rim. I can't even wish for you to steal the show like what most second leads usually do.

Can't you just have a bromantic storyline with Rim a la Jongsuk and Woobin in School2013? Since I'm sure the "Unkind Women" will also have womance over the course of the drama...

And please for the love of Drama Gods, no tree-branching. Y'hear me, Equator Man people??? NO. TREE. BRANCHING.

Dear tvN:

I would like to ask you to redeem your sin for cancelling the Three Muskateers by casting Kim Ji suk and Lee Jin Wook( they are best friends in real life) in a drama again. Unlike INR2 where they chased one girl, the new drama needs to provide two different girls for them to chase after in harmony!!

I've been a fan of his since his daily drama Likable or Not (I didn't know any better back then, thought dailies were all there was). He was the lead and got that girl. But by the time I discovered weekly dramas and he popped back on my radar he was relegated to Second Lead Territory. Definitely ready to see him lead a Drama.

I know, Song Jae Rim can make this drama get the highest rating with his charming. but it is too early to make Jae Rim as the lead role. Kim Ji Suk is Prince of Charming too and good acting skills. I hope in the next drama he will be the lead role.
