Yoochun and Suzy sniff out new drama Girl Who Sees Smells

Well it’s not exactly an appetizing title, but I guess it IS descriptive: Girl Who Sees Smells is a new drama headed to SBS on Wednesdays and Thursdays this spring, and offers are reportedly out to Park Yoochun (Three Days) and Bae Suzy (Gu Family Book) to headline. The drama is an adaptation of a webtoon (what isn’t these days?) about — you guessed it — a girl who sees smells. Way to be on the nose. Hur.

The drama is about two people connected through a violent crime, called the Barcode Murder Case. The hero loses his little sister and subsequently becomes a cop, while the heroine barely escapes the incident with her life, and loses her memory from the trauma. She somehow develops heightened senses through the ordeal, and in particular gains the ability to see smells. I had to look up images from the webtoon (below) to see just how literal the ability was, and yup, it looks like she sees smells floating around people.

I have no idea why this ability would be useful to anybody, but I’m sure it’ll become important to the case. More importantly, it sets up our hero and heroine as opposites, because dramaland doesn’t know any other way: The hero is described as completely unfeeling and numb (in this case I don’t actually know if he’s impervious to pain or just emotionally cold), while the heroine is hyper-feeling because she can’t block out her heightened senses.

The setup sounds a lot like Gap-dong in plot, though with the supernatural bent and focus on younger characters, I can see it being less dark. The adaptation will be penned by writer Lee Hee-myung of Rooftop Prince and Yawang, and helmed by PD Baek Su-chan of Pumpkin Flower Innocence and Dream. They’re not exactly credits that induce a wealth of confidence, but Yoochun was pretty fun in the silly supernatural rom-com Rooftop Prince, and maybe this time with good source material to rely on, the collaboration can only improve?

That’s the hope anyway, since I want Yoochun to be in good dramas. His last one, the action-thriller Three Days, left me pretty cold. He fared much better in his big screen debut last year, and earned numerous accolades and a host of praise for his acting in Sea Fog. I can’t say I’m excited about Suzy headlining another drama, because my feelings about her are pretty much the same as they’ve always been — I find her adorable and lovable, and not a very good actress. I’d love to be surprised by her someday, because she has such natural charm; she just still feels so green.

At least I can see them being cute together, since the drama is about their budding romance as the cop hero helps the smell-seeing girl to recover her memories and protects her from harm. The characters are ages 29 and 22, which makes the casting spot-on in that regard. I won’t hope for miracles, but maybe they’ll have really great chemistry and sell us on the romance. Hey, pheromones are smells, right? Still… kinda… icky…

Girl Who Sees Smells follows Hyde, Jekyll, Me on Wednesdays and Thursdays in April.

It'll be pretty cool if she 'see' desire and anger and all that stuff.

Imagine if the girl can see someone feeling 'hot and bothered' and how she'll react to it. It's practically a goldmine of comedic moments.

The casting I'm ok with I guess. Not too thrilled either way. I like Suzy because she's a likable girl but have never been wowed by her. Same as Yoochun.

That's an unusually interesting pairing...

I foresee a cute chemistry, but the plot is sort of unusual which makes me curious.

Yoochun casting seems spot on...he can play "cold" pretty well.

I was also disappointed with his last drama, so I hope to see him in something where I can like him again.

The webtoon's female lead character's age is 17 and I am really relieved that the drama changed it because if not... ughhh.

And from what I have seen of the webtoon (lol just skim through, not really understanding it), I think it gave off the same vibe as "Soul / Hon", except in this one, the girl could see smell instead of ghosts. But I'm not sure if the drama would keep the same mystery / thriller vibe as the original, or change it into rom-com (which would sound a bit weird, lol)

I love Miss A, and I like Suzy but I am not really sure about her acting. If they're sticking to the original webtoon story, then the drama will be centralised mostly on the female lead's character and I think it will be a meatier role for Suzy to challenge on.

I wouldn't have had a problem if the female were 17. I mean, we're supposed to root for high school boys who in Kdramas do little more than chase adult women around, amirite? *sarcasm*

Required fields are marked *

I have no idea why, but I get the impression you seem to think it's only high school boys who get the older-person romancing treatment when that's far from the case and girls get it equally too. (see: It's Ok, It's Love).

0

Required fields are marked *

My impression was that it isn't anywhere near equal but that may be because of what I've watched. What I have noticed is that people raise far less of a stink when the student is male (this may be due to the fact that the actors chosen are generally not high schoolers themselves so it doesn't feel as icky).

Anyways, pogo, as an advocate of free love, I was just being snarky ;-)

Required fields are marked *

I have issues when it's a high schooler with anyone older than college age (i.e. 21 cause I use my american standards). I agree that having older guy actors play high schoolers can somewhat dull my reaction but it all makes me uncomfortable. It's why I haven't yet watched High School King… even though I love SIG and everyone says that show was really good. Even knowing he's much older than the role.

I feel bad, but this is most likely gonna be another Yoochun drama I pass on (I haven't watched any! *gasp*).
He really needs to pick better projects with lead actresses I actually like :(
2 typical romcoms that aren't to my taste, Miss Ripley looked so dry, Missing You I would've at least tried to watch if it wasn't for Yoon Eun Hye, and Three Days I was the most optimistic about and it had the best premise, but then that flopped too. And now this stupid idea and Suzy :/

Which reminds me, I need to start watching Spy. Thank you Jae for finally picking a good drama again! :D This might even cancel out the-drama-that-cannot-be-named in my head if it's good enough :)

The plot is different. It could be interesting but I'm not crazy about it yet. Nor about Suzy. She's likable, I guess. Just not as an actress. I've never managed to enjoy her in any role she's played thus far. Definitely not lead-role material.

I guess Yoochun will do this drama before he heads off to the military? I wish he'd choose a stronger, more appealing role, but that's just my opinion. I can probably dig him in this role.

Good luck to the production, though. I hope it turns out well. I'll probably tune in, just out of pure curiosity. Who knows, it could be super fun?

There's an old kdrama, maybe 10 or more years ago, where the heroine has some extra sensory ability related to her sense of smell. Maybe it's a cultural thing (or just a personal reaction) but the premise made me a bit queasy and I couldn't watch it.

0

Required fields are marked *

Yes you're totally right ! I actually saw that drama, but I can't remember the title or even the actors in it !! ^^'
But I remember that it was actually different : it is true that the hero was also a cop, but the heroine's powers were different. She could reminisce a feeling or an important scene linked to the object by the smell of it. And when she tells the cop, he enlists her help. Then there was this dark plot that concerns them both. This is actually really vague, sorry, I can't remember it well. But I do recall that it was ok (I can't say good since I don't remember it ^^')

Anyway, this new drama may be less creepy than it sounds : like she sees auras on people or something :)

Suzy is working her way through a lot of the younger popular actors. KSH, Seunggi and now Yoochun. I love this pairing for the sheer pretty on screen. But Yoochun's gonna have to act circles around her if she hasn't been taking any acting lessons since GFB.

I'm more worried about the weird premise. It sounds as absurd as Iron Man. Maybe even more so. That's not a good thing to me, so I can just hope this somehow works out. I really like them both and think they'll have adorable chemistry.

The title is such a mess. The Girl Who Sees Smell???? Sounds like someone was either high or drunk. And then to cast Suzy?? Why not cast someone who is actually an actress like Lee Yu-bi or Kim So-Hyun (She's 15 but she acts way better than Suzy)?

I See Your Smell, My Dear Cat (The drama of my life)
I See Your Smell, Goodbye Dear Wife (Husband can't take it anymore)

Yes, Lee Yu-bi!!! Kim So-Hyun is a bit young...but I do love her!

The title is really terrible. It sounds so...awkward and unattractive. Although, the condition not actually as far fetched as it seems. It sounds a lot like synesthesia. Singer Pharrell Williams claims to "see" sounds. Marina and the Diamonds sees particular colors as being associated with musical notes and days of the week. Patrick Stump (Lead singer of Fall Out Boy!) also associates colors with numbers, letters, and sounds.

But for sure, they could have came up with something else. A euphemism of sorts.

I'm actually more worried about the writing. I liked parts of Rooftop Prince but there was so much stupid that mired a potentially interesting story. If there was at least a good script and directing can work around limited actors, which goes for both of them. I'm beginning to like absurd stories, if the Blade Man writer was doing this I'd be on board.

Also, more cheesy retitling based on smelling (blame @Wag_a_muffin):

Smelling Agency Cyrano-works even better giving the original story haha

Nose Man-emotional pain manifests in heightened senses--no more secretary abuse necessary

Discovery of Odor-may the best smelling man win

*Gag-Gag*: the smell of his and her BO

Honestly it's all about the storyline and the script more than the acting skills. A fun drama (that still had flaws though) like Rooftop Prince could make Yoochun shine in his role, when I saw him in Missing You I felt his skills aren't so good (even if he did that drama AFTER Rooftop Prince so if anything his skills should have improved and not the opposite...), that's when you realize the roles or scenario are the most important. There are actors and actresses who have a successful career and no big failure because they know how to pick their projects to always have roles that suit them and their skills.

Suzy is same as Yoochun, in Architecture 101 she shine in the drama, she actually got the most attention, that wouldn't have happened if she played badly. She played the first love role and it made the public remember their first love successfully, earning her a nickname and making her popular. So it's all about the roles, the storyline, the script, and the production.

If the producers and scriptwriters can make a good job, then I'm looking forward to this drama! The idea seems fun, they just need to work well on the production and script, then it could be a sucessful project. I'd love to see a Yoochun - Suzy pairing since I think they'd look good together, so hopefully they accept the roles and everything else works well.

Personally I enjoy following Suzy's career, ok I do know lots of people dislike seeing her as lead but so far she didn't take that many leads, only Gu Family Book which was 2 years ago (Dream High also but that's in-house Jype produced drama). She doesn't really take THAT many roles and I believe it's possible for those who dislike her to avoid her dramas pretty easily. I enjoy watching her, not just because I love her personnality and looks, but because I think she has potential, she's really busy so (as she said herself) it's frustrating that she can't show her best and find time to practice, but I can see she wants to improve, and since I loved her in Architecture 101 and I think she did "fine" in GFB (save some scenes that could have been re-done), I look forward to see her in more roles and see the possible improvements she could make, especially since it still feels like she's challenging herself as she keep taking different type of dramas/movies and different type of roles. I guess, also considering her age, it's the best way to improve for her.

Either way I'll wait for more news about this, hope to hear good things!

I actually really hope Suzy accepts the role so that the haters bitch & moan through the whole drama. I know Suzy's not a top notch actress so i'll be watching to see if she improves.

Yoochun, please don´t. this Miss Blank and this sort of subject....after you went on real serious grounds in Sea Fog? Please don´t. You´re better than this could possibly be.

but I have a fear he is this "Work horse" type who just does all work without complaining about anything. goes through stone if necessary. but it aint necessary, you know

Well, I'd give it a shot for Yoochun. It sounds like it might turn into a disaster but I thought that about KMHM (and yes I know that it's mainly due to Ji Sung's incredible acting that it isn't) and the script turned out to be a lot better than I dreamed it could be so I'm being more open-minded now.

Hahaha.

This piece of news may be worth it for all the jokes.

But I hope the next piece says he turned it down.

Man i dunno. I'd rather Yoochun to enlist if he can't find anything interesting. I am not against Suzy but the writer-pd duo is a turn off.

This drama might either work or fail. I'm leaning towards a fail. Yoochun is a good guy and Suzy is a sweet girl, but I don't really see them having chemistry. Suzy have a long way to go before I can acknowledge her as an actress. I felt like she was pushed to take lead actress roles instead of her building her experience. Yoochun, I thought he was being enlisted, but i guess after this drama? I heard sea-fog was really good, so why not just leave it at that, take a break, and come back strong?

For a story line like this, you need actor and actress that can pull of the webtoonyness. My vote is, Lee Je Hoon and Kim so eun.

I haven't actually seen Suzy in anything, but I have a feeling chemistry will be lacking. I'd like to see him with Jung Eun Ji.

Jung Eun Ji would be another good choice.

So basically she has synesthesia. Yoochun and Suzy aren't quite enough to convince me, but this could definitely be interesting with the right execution.

Only they took out the weirdest possible symptom of synaesthesia for a show.
It is all in the execution. And Yoochun is great.

seems this drama is not promising when two lead fc have a strong fight here. hmm, aren't they confirm yet?

both are ok but the plot is not much attention and weird. it reminds me of I hear your voice but that drama is pretty good. If this drama cannot reach the standard of IHYV, i think this is a bigger problem than acting skills.

FYI, Not all commenters here are either YC or SZ fans. And stating opinions is not a fight between the two fandoms, okay? Also, you should weed out obvious trolls, shit stirrers and those who intentionally promoting their bias here (not yc or sz^^) as if they're great lol
