Lee Joon and Go Ah-sung’s first shoot for I Heard it Through the Grapevine

I hope SBS’s new Monday-Tuesday drama I Heard it Through the Grapevine doesn’t disappoint — it has a great cast, solid producers, and promises incisive social commentary rolled into a black comedy. The drama from the producers behind Secret Love Affair stars Lee Joon (Gap-dong) and Go Ah-sung (Snowpiercer) as a high school couple that gets pregnant and has to cross their families’ massive social divide in order to be together. I have to say, the first teaser doesn’t impress me, mostly because it’s slapdash and doesn’t set a tone for the show, so there’d better be a big improvement in the next one.

Stills from the first shoot on the set feature Lee Joon chasing after Go Ah-sung in the river, which I’m assuming is her first reaction to finding out that she’s pregnant with his child. Life’s about to get tough for her, a senior in high school from an average family, who has strong opinions and isn’t afraid to speak her mind.

Because she didn’t know until it’s too late that her boyfriend and classmate Lee Joon is from a stuffy rich family that goes generations back in old money, and that his father (Yoo Joon-sang) is a powerful and corrupt lawyer who shapes the government, and that his mother (Yoo Ho-jung) is the prim and perfect envy of socialites everywhere. The scandal throws their perfect lives into chaos, which I’m hoping means that the drama will be dripping with satire and amusement for the rest of us.

The teaser uses a cover of the Ham Joong-ah and Yankees song “I Heard it Through the Grapevine,” which is where the title comes from. (My favorite cover is by Jang Kiha and the Faces, not only because it’s the title song for Nameless Gangster… okay, a little bit because of that, but mostly because it’s an awesome rendition of an awesome song. I hope they get to use it in the drama.)

It zips through the basic setup a little too quickly to digest anything for longer than a second, though I do appreciate that Go Ah-sung’s dad beats up Lee Joon for getting his daughter pregnant. Because goodness knows she’ll spend the drama suffering the wrath of his parents. Crossing my fingers that their romance will make up for his hoity-toity family and then some.

I Heard it Through the Grapevine premieres February 23.

My twitter feed has been flooded by stills over the past two days and it just makes me more excited than I already was :D

I admit I'm first and foremost in for Lee Joon but that doesn't mean I'm not excited for the rest of the cast because I totally am!

I really hope they go all out with the black comedy because I LOVE that kind of stuff =)

Also THANK YOU Girlfriday for posting the link to that song! I've been looking for it for quite some time^^

I'm highly anticipating this drama...I'm not familiar with the leads work, but it was enough for me to know that it's the team behind "secret love affair" which is drama that I was absolutely crazy about.

Snowpeircer was a great satirical film…not everyone's favorite, but I loved how dark and reflective it was.

Lee Joon is an amazing up-and-coming actor. He really impressed a lot of people because he was an "idol" (well known for singing and dancing etc…), but he took acting very seriously. The drama series "Gap-Dong" is not a perfect drama, but it was a pretty good introduction to how good of an actor Lee Joon was becoming.

Regardless, check them out if you would like to see some past works with the lead actors.

I hope this drama turns out well and that we can all enjoy it.

Looking forward to this show!

I was introduced to Yoo Joon-sang from watching a few clips of his musical The Days which starred Ji Chang-wook as well. Am happy to see him in this drama. Excited that Lee Joon is pushing himself by taking on different roles.

I'm just glad we get to see the actor playing her father not be a scary/dangerous character so far. I loved him on 'Superman Returns,' where he was a dad trying to understand and get closer to his two sons :) I hope that part of him translates well with this role

I'm intrigued mostly because the drama is marketing itself as a dark comedy and I love dark comedy. This is the first time I've seen a K drama labeling self as a dark comedy I can't think of any others. If anyone can think of a few K dramas or J dorama (because I watched those as well) please let me know. Thank you. The cast also looks solid, so I'm hoping this will turn out to be really good.

Doesn't it look like she's very far along, pregnant in the river scene? That's even more interesting...

Love the look of this! It's definitely in the same vein as Secret Love Affair, with similarly rich and hard-working set designs overloaded with detail.

I liked Lee Joon in Gap Dong and I'm glad he has a chance to play a non-creepy role.

Reminds me of the movie with KDW and SHK about Ahreum, but I guess the only similarity between this drama and that movie are teen parents haha.

Omg that song by Jang Kiha and the Faces is one of my fave sngs by them!! I only knew it as 'I Heard a Rumour', I didn't know it was a cover version or that the drama title was taken from it. Must say though, it's irrational, but I'm a lot more excited about this drama now that I've discovered this tenuous link haha :D

Btw has anyone seen Nameless Gangster? It's mentioned a lot in various variety shows and it looks quite good but I'm not sure if it's worth adding it to my (ever) increasing movie/drama list.

It's Go Ah-sung signing on to this role that got me excited - it's a sign that the script was probably decent, enough to woo her back from films for this. (I sad probably. I really hope this drama doesn't disappoint, too)

From the same timeslot, I have hope from this drama. All casts and crews are making it great. it's very promising. Joon has no baby face so i was worry about how would he transfer to be a high school kid. But the still cut make me awww, i see teenage in him and that's great!

I can't wait this drama. paili Feb 23
