Hyeri in contention for Answer Me 1988

Erm, am I missing something? Is Hyeri good in things that aren’t Hyde, Jekyll, Me? Granted, that’s the one and only project I’ve seen her in (and maybe you guys will tell me that she’s wonderful in her cable drama Seonam Girls’ High Investigation Unit), but I can’t say that I’m excited to hear that she’s in consideration for the leading role in Answer Me 1988. The 21-year-old Girl’s Day idol has a total of three acting credits under her belt playing supporting characters, and is now in the running to become tvN’s next breakout star.

PD Shin Won-ho of the Answer Me franchise gave a statement that no decisions have been made about casting the leading role, and no one has been officially cast other than parents Sung Dong-il and Lee Il-hwa. He confirmed that producers had a meeting with Hyeri, but made sure to say that because the production is still seven months away from broadcast, they’re considering a long list of actresses, and Hyeri is just one of them.

It’s hard to separate Hyeri from her throwaway Hyde, Jekyll, Me character, and if she’d done more with the role I might see more potential. She’s definitely got the cute bubbly persona, so I get why she’s popular as an idol; as an actress, I’m going to need some convincing. I know, Answer Me 1997 brought Jung Eun-ji into the world and Answer Me 1994 pretty much reinvented Go Ara. But is a hat-trick expecting too much, or do I just need to have faith that Shin Won-ho will turn anyone into the actress he needs?

The third Answer Me series will be about a small cluster of families living next-door to one another, and this time the focus will be on family and neighbors, rather than the hunt for one girl’s future husband. Fingers and toes crossed for another magical ensemble, leading actress included.

Answer Me 1988 is being planned for an October broadcast on tvN.

I just read on Koreaboo that she was cast so I'm glad for this update that its not confirmed. Now I can go hope it doesn't become reality. She can play one of the many supporting roles that will be available.

I doubt her team would have come out with a confirmation, if they weren't given the impression that the role was hers. However, due to the very vocal and very large opposition to her casting, both her team and the Answer Me team are now back pedaling and saying she is under consideration.

At this point, she will most likely drop out sighting scheduling conflicts or if they can't get her a new role, they will drop her to a minor character.

Right now, Hyeri is being positioned as the next "it girl" basically supplant Suzy, just like Suzy did to Yoona. So an acting controversy or a netizen outcry is not what her team wants at this time.

Well, it is a hat trick for me: I can't stand Suzy, don't like Yoona, and Hyeri is more of the same: Over-processed, under-talented, relying on Youth, aegyo, and a team of marketing sharks for success.

It maybe the case for other celebrities but Hyeri and the group has been almost always under controversy. It started when they were not popular when hyeri found out to be dating much older guy ex HOT member, Toni. It help them to popularity, they were also used the same controversy over other member dating and breakup during their single release and it did help them moving up the chart after the news. So in their case we can really ruled out media play.

It actually make sense for her to only audition for the role since EUnji also did that and THe producer said, he will cast someone who can act like always so it's dountful that she's the main lead since like other says she's not really good actress, and Reply didnt really need to cast based on their popularity since they're already a popular show. Moreover he also said they havent decided on the leads coz it's still 7 months till production started but we'll see what will happened.

After 4 episodes of 'Seonam Girls Highschool Investigators' and almost half of 'Hyde, Jekyll and I', my personal opinion is that she's simply bad and has zero charisma and on-screen presence.

Thankfully for me, I don't follow the Answer Me series. I still hope they'll rethink this though. For the sake of those watching.

I don't buy for a second that this is only in contention. Her team put out a bunch of articles saying that she's considering the role. But hey, I would seriously love to be proven wrong. I'm usually pretty forgiving of people who are just starting out but she really has no business being in front of a camera.

Korean articles are often misleading about lead roles and supporting roles so at least you can have the hope that what she was offered was a supporting role like Dohee in Reply 1994. Still annoying but at least not the lead.

why on earth can tvN not consider actresses with talent who need the break? Eunji was very good but are they choosing known bad actresses to annoy viewers on purpose after her? It would have been nice if they considered even someone like Yoon So Hee or Lee Yoo Bi instead.

Oh man I will kill for Yoon Sohee to lead this. She would have been a DREAM. She's so so so natural on screen. Love her delivery.

Natural? She has a total of 2 facial expressions: "cute" and "resting bitch face". She was exactly the same in Marriage Not Dating and Secret Door.

Yoon So-hee has the gift of making characters who could be extremely grating, really likeable instead.

Marriage Not Dating had her playing a total bitch, and being hateable accordingly, but she really pulled off Let's Eat and also Wild Chives & Soybean Soup. The characters in the latter two are exactly the kind that grate on my nerves in dramas but somehow, in her hands, they seemed really quite charming and natural.

0

Man, I freaking loathed her character in Marriage Not Dating. She played the part well, but I agree with you. Not much range from what I've seen, but she's alright.

0

she does have good presence on screen, and is pretty funny, but her range isn't so great. That being said, since she's so young, she might be capable of growing in technique fairly quickly if she has good mentors. I don't see her as able to carry a show, but could do well in a Do Hee type secondary role

I find her extremely annoying in HJM actually; its the cute love-line she has that keeps her relevant at all. Tbh, its sort of a given that some idol actors will be a part of the Answer Me series because its a trademark for them. But they've also always managed to pick the diamond out of the rough. I'm not so sure this time.

Hyeri hasn't shown potential and while she isn't who I'd call awkward or dull on screen, she's so unnatural and always seem to be 'acting' (or trying to at least) instead of looking like the part. Eun-ji is such a huge talent that if she wasn't given a part in 97, she'll probably break out somewhere else. Hyeri doesn't give that impression but this series has also proven me wrong in both their previous seasons. I try to keep an open mind and trust the production knows what they're doing.

True. He did work wonders with Jung Eun-ji who was a total rookie with no past works on her resume so I'm hoping IF Hyeri is the lead, she won't turn out so bad. I have more faith in the PD than the actors for this series. Most of the casts were pretty unknowns, but they ended up doing really well so who knows.

But a lot of that credit goes to Jung Eunji though. A good script can only do so much for someone who isn't good at acting and a good actor can only do so much with a bad script. It's the combination of the two that can create something so wonderful.

Required fields are marked *

Not exactly true.

Yoon Eun-hye best acting work is still "Coffee Prince" - where she got to work with a top notch script/dialogue and a talented PD who knew how to get the best out of her.

And while the underlying story of "My Princess" was weak, overall it had good dialogue and hit the right emotional moments and not surprisingly, Kim Tae-hee gave her best performance.

Same with Lee Yeon-hee in "My Princess" and Go Ara in "Reply 1994."

We never saw Eun Ji before the Answer Me '97 (except if you follow A Pink which I did after watching '97 hehe) but Hyeri, we saw her on a cable drama and in "that" drama with 2 personalities. And I find her character annoying. So we know what to expect from her.

Are all the young actresses in Korea wiped off the face of the planet or something? Or is even tvN choosing to follow the mentality of avoiding actresses who showed any talent at all in previous works?

If they had to cast someone from Girls' Day then Minah is a better choice because at leastshe can act. But instead, they want the girl who's more popular but a terrible actress.

And everybody keeps saying Jung Eunji was a rookie too, but at least she had a natural screen presence. This girl does not.

haha srsly. i think aaide from that there was also an episode that began with her as "herself" (ie hyeri of girls day) and being pretty upfront about her acting skill, or lack thereof. i appreciated that they owned it and made it into a running joke on the show..

hyeri was pretty forgettable in the role though. i think they did two cases without her and i barely noticed someone was missing.

visually, i think she has a lot of charm. there are a lot of pretty faces in k-entertainment, but only a few girls truly stand out, especially with plastic surgery being so rampant.

as an actress... she doesn't really have a lot to do in hyde and jekyll, and what little she does do shows that she still seems pretty green.

still, i can sort of see her skating by on charm like suzy has done in the past. granted, suzy started off with leading roles (aka loads of screen time) and i've personally only seen hyeri as a side character in one drama, so i can't say for sure just how much natural charisma she has... but with the right role, maybe?

Hyeri's not that bad. She's an okay actress, but not really outstanding. I'd say she's like Park Shin-hye pre-Pinnochio, so maybe with the right role she can improve. No need to think it would be soooo horrible if she was cast in a lead role. However maybe not a lead role in a well-known series... Oh well we'll see how it turns out soon!

lol Park Shin-hye is not an extraordinarily great actress, but Hyeri is nowhere near her level.

PSH's acting prior to Pinocchio was not as poor as some make it out to be. It's unfortunate that she will always be associated with her unlikeable character in Heirs, and that drama in general.

They're both pretty faces, but at least one of them has some screen presence and charm, and can emote well. Hyeri has much to prove.

On the Hyeri thing let’s not panic yet. I’d like to point out no one knew what to expect from Jung Eun-ji before Answer Me 1997 and Go Ara’s casting in Answer Me 1994 elicited similar panic but they both did wonderfully. So perhaps the casting director saw something in Hyeri we haven’t yet and she’ll surprise us.

Jung Eunji Filmed one drama and it was a success and she acted it out beautifully. Go Ara has tons of experience in acting from films to dramas even though some performed badly but she had time to improve. Hyeri has done 2 dramas and her performance has not been that great. It hasn't even been a year for her to at least "improve". So unless for some reason she magically decides to act better I don't buy it.
I wouldn't compare her casting decision to the both of them since 1 got good reviews off the back while the other has a good enough experience to improve.

Go Ara actually started showing improvement while acting in Reply 1994 so you'll never know. I do agree that Hyeri is too green for a lead role. I was expecting her role to be a supporting one but this is right out of the blue.

I've seen Go Ara's work before Reply '94. She was really good on Sharp 1 and 2, followed by Snow Flower. Some of her other dramas didn't do so well afterwards before landing Reply '94, but I wouldn't say she was a bad actress. She even won best actress awards for her early dramas. IMO, a lot of the negative publicity around her came from her drama "Heading to the Ground" with U-Know Yunho of TVXQ, but I actually liked her there and it was one of my favorites with her in it. (I might be one of the very few who actually watched that drama from beginning to end and I'm glad I did.) So, to me, it was no surprise she was able to make her comeback and pull off Reply, but as for Hyeri...I thought she was ok, not great, but ok on Seonam and JHM, so who knows, maybe she can pull it off if she gets the lead on Reply 98 given her quirky personality...or maybe not. We'll just have to wait and see.

Answer Me 1997 was lightning in a bottle casting on a drama that was mostly under the radar when it started. Basically, they had nothing to lose in casting them and no one really had any expectations. This time it is different. The two Answer Me dramas were mega-hits and has made household names of people who were in them. The expectation is very high on this casting and I'll be greatly disappointed if they did not get someone who is a good actor/actress. I am sure they have dozens of actors/actresses vying for those roles. Personally, I don't think Hyeri is it.

Jung Eunji had to audition to win her role, no one had seen her act before and she won her part on merit. Go Ara had ten years of experience in acting behind her even if she was bad, she knew enough to be able to learn more.

this girl is a rookie AND a known bad actress, people are not wrong for criticising based on what we already saw of her.

but... i just can't. jung eunji is naturally born with acting (and singing) talent, and she's perfect for that role.
and hyeri has already done 2 drama and frankly, i cringe when i see her. i don't hate her. but i don't understand the hypes about her after that viral video abt her in real men. i thought han ji min was really bad in hyde jekyl and me, and everytime they put han ji min and hyeri in one scene together, i cringe.

the fact that she is already super popular in super popular girl group with 2 supported role in drama recently but can't give the general audience impression in her acting part is what make people complaint.

People want to give her a chance but Reply series is loved by many and also a chance for another actress that maybe better suited for the part to be introduce to general public.

so, the rejection/complaint for her is normal and have base not just because she is an idol

As for the Hyeri debacle, acting in a supporting role w/ minimal screen time? Maybe. Leading role? Not quite. I only know of her through Hyde,Jekyll and Real Men. While many was endeared by her "sexy/aegyo act", I must admit that it made my skin crawl. It seemed unnatural. Hey, there's always a room for improvement...maybe not in this room.

I already anticipated that the Reply series would go back to the late 80's era since it was also the subject of speculation here on DB while in the midst of Reply '94's ships-sinking finale. Ooh, why not cast the actors on Seo Taji's Seogyeokdong MV? Too young? Well, I just hope they find someone deserving.

She is in no way ready for a leading role, and she might never be.

What is with this business of casting idols with little to no experience? Couldn't stand Hyeri's character in HJM; she couldn't even pull off cute and adorable. Not to mention Krystal's one facial expression throughout the entire run of My Lovely Girl. As others have said, there are too many talented actresses out there for this to be excusable. What they gain in a singer's fan base (and even that's questionable, given ratings), they lose in quality.

And then they wonder why drama ratings are in free fall...
