Kang Min-hyuk courted for School 2015

Aw, Kang Min-hyuk is such a cutie pie. I know that everyone in Heirs was too old to play high school, but he seemed on the younger end of the lot, and I can see him being a good fit for the coming-of-age School franchise. KBS Monday-Tuesday drama Who Are You–School 2015 currently has an offer out to Lee Yubi (Pinocchio) to headline, and now Kang Min-hyuk is considering the leading role opposite her. I know this series isn’t always about the romance, but with these two, I might want a sweet high school love story to sweeten things up.

The newest installment of the School series will have a mystery genre bent to it: It’s now been revealed that the story will be about a set of twins whose fates are swapped. Lee Yubi has been cast to play a girl who transfers to a new school in Gangnam and goes from nobody to popular girl, and that it’s linked somehow to the disappearance of the school’s It Girl.

I’m only speculating, but if the two girls are twins, that would explain a hell of a lot. There aren’t any other plot details to clarify whether Lee Yubi is playing one girl or two (or whether she’ll sign on), so I guess we’ll keep an open mind and wait for confirmations.

Kang Min-hyuk has been offered the role of the school’s sports star, which for obvious reasons makes him the most popular guy in school. I don’t know about him as a jock; the studious type is closer to the image I have of him, even though I know he’s actually a drummer in real life. Maybe he’s just the most clean-cut drummer in the history of drummers. In the words of my mother, I kid you not: “I like CN Blue. They look like such NICE boys.”

Who Are You–School 2015 follows Blood in late April.

With such baby-face I can actually believe he's a highschooler.. Such a cutie pie Kang Min Hyuk!! :D
Actually I think his casting is almost confirmed, since FNC will produce this drama and even make the school set.

Definitely watching if Minhyuk is cast. Cutie can light up my laptop screen anytime. :) I started and committed to 50+ episodes of You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly for him. The show was luckily amazing, but I would've watched it either way for his cute face.

Since this drama will be produced by FNC. I hope to see Kwak Dong Yeon in this drama. Maybe they will be cameo by Lee Da Hae or anyone in FNC will fill up the other roles.

He was very natural as a high school student (he probably was still a high school at the time lol) in the drama special Adolescence Medley/Puberty Medley, so I really hope FNC doesn't let him mess out on this one.

I was unsure of FNC producing the drama (because they tend to stick their actors into everything) but if they cast the better actors within the company then it shouldn't be a problem.

Oh he looks so good in the photo above
it's a high school drama, I think he can handles it
He hasn't been impressive in his works yet but he's actually pretty good for an idol actor, I see potential in him
Some of his drama co stars have headline dramas e.g Oh Yeon Seo, Krystal
I guess now it's his time

Not that I was interested in this at all, but I wish they gave a real actor a chance like most of the School franchise have done in the past. An idol actor who's cute but has no versatility isn't my what I'd call a good choice when there's such a large talent pool waiting for their break.

Then again it's produced by his agency so...

You sounds so sceptical though
Minhyuk actually had done different roles in dramas
He was a pabo boy in acoustic, maknae player bf in my husband got family, cutie food lover in heartstrings, then studious caring bf and bff in heirs
Give him a chance, how do we know how he'll grow as an actor if he keeps doing supporting roles?
Not all idol actors are bad and not all rookie actors are good

I agree with @sophia. I'm a Boice here and have followed CNBlue for many years. I've seen all of the drama these boys have acted in and amongst us Boice we all seem to agree that Minhyuk is the better actor than the rest. Jonghyun is the better guitarist/lyricist, Yonghwa is the better composer/musician, while Jungshin is just well awesome as himself XD (I'd say he's really good at modelling). But the point is, Minhyuk's acting has always been very natural and doesn't seem stiff/forced like other idol actors. He's one to the rarer idol actors that can really act like Im Siwan, Hyungsik, Lee Seung Gi, just to name a few. So I think given all the supporting roles he did, I think he has proven to be a good actor so I hope he takes that leap into leading role. I personally think he's ready for it. Also not to mention, student roles really suits him, he not only looks the part but he has played this kind if role before to viewer's satisfaction :)

I am skeptical though. I've tried to make that quite obvious. In whatever I've seen him in, I don't see too much potential. For a franchise that launched careers of many real and versatile A-listers in the past, I expected them to go with potential rather than Hallyu popularity.

All idol actors aren't all bad and Jung Eun-ji is the biggest example of that. She beats almost every rookie actress with just pure talent. But... I hardly made a statement on idols. I said 'an idol' as in Kang Min-hyuk in particular - he wouldn't be my first choice. I'm not interested the drama though, so it wouldn't be too much a concern to me, admittedly.

Hi, I don't usually comment on boy band members news, but I have been DYING to see Kang act again. You need to see his acting chops on "Unexpected You"!!! This drama was written by the screenwriter who wrote "You Who Came From The Stars"!!! Kang was ADORABLE and FUNNY AS HELL in that. I've been hoping he would hang up his drumsticks and play lead roles! He has a natural talent for acting. You know, you either have it or you don't. It's not something that can really be taught. I can ASSURE you Kang has the gift. I'm not even a fan of CNBlue or whatever the name of his boy band is.

I actually haven't seen the drama you mentioned. But your optimism makes me hopeful he does really well in this. It's a franchise that boasts of many great actors. I'm skeptical but very open to him proving me wrong. At least it's not Jung Yong-hwa is all lol.

He's very cute in You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly, and he's the best actor out of the three I've seen from his band but but "one of the best new actors in Korea today" is a rank exaggeration, I'm afraid.

His acting isn't cringeworthy but compared to the calibre of performance/onscreen charisma we'd seen out of Lee Jong-seok and Kim Woo-bin before they were cast in School 2013, it's not really impressive.

how do we know how he’ll grow as an actor if he keeps doing supporting roles?

uh, that's how most actors grow? And that's how the stars of the last School instalment grew too - by improving their craft in one supporting role after another before they legitimately caught people's eye, not by having their agency buy the entire production and all but lock them straight into the main lead role.

my 2 cents, i think he got pretty much light character in all his previous drama, so he's not that bad.. but i'm not sure if he could ace such layered and meaty character like Go Nam Soon..
so let's hope for either one, his character in School 2015 is not that heavy, or if given character like that he could pull it off..

that agency is notorious for 'package deals' on their idols in dramas so I share your scepticism. He's cute but nothing to get excited about imo.

I hope this doesn't sideline Lee Yubi as a result, is all. I would not put it past his agency to try and slip in another idol and force last-minute script changes that leave characters played by everyone else with a lot less screentime.

But still I'd like to have a lot of unknown new faces in the project.

think the idea got too big and they smell money to be made, thus Idols actors and a shift in story line to fit, they still have the 'adult' veteran actors as teaches to cover I guess. But yeah it is a pity they dropped the idea of blooding fresh 'trained' actors, each series thus far has helped many into the lime light after all

actually the first time i read about the plot it sounded like a manhwa and a movie last week, with the girl loosing her memories and didn't know who and how she was before, and people around her(there were love lines included) having all sorts of payback or settle with her and wanting to regain her memory on her own accord and know who she hurt and loved

but girlfriday, you should check the other FNC drummers, yess kang min hyuk is clean-cut drummers, but ft island drummer (min hwan) and N Flying drummer (kim jaehyun) are like him too, they have sweetie cutie pie face, but totally change when they're on stage

he is indeed cute, but he is not only cute, that would not be enough to make it count. he also has enough presence and he doesnt just waste the time he is given on screen. some other idol actors however.... they seem to think scenes can be stretched indefinitely until they decide to act a little bit. i think it is a very important realization for young actors that your time is limited and every second counts

If FNC insisted on giving the male lead to one of their artists, they should have picked Kwak Dong Yeon instead of Kang Min Hyuk. Kwak Dong Yeon is the best actor in FNC after Lee Hong Gi, is high school age and has been paired up with older actresses before. Plus, if Lee Yu Bi ended up not accepting, they could have casted an all-teen cast.

Kang Min-hyuk is so adorable, but I am not so sure of his acting chops. Lee Jong-suk and Kim Woo-bin definitely had to portray a lot of emotion in the previous installment and I when I imagine Min-hyuk in that, I don't know if he would be as good. But, I want to give him the benefit of doubt, considering that the story is different and its not fair to judge him on School 2013. He was stupidly goofy in "You've Fallen for Me" and he did a decent enough job being the always-hungry-clueless-drummer in love.

On another note, I didn't realize how tall he is until I saw him play basketball in the idol athletic championships (I usually tune in for the soccer with Yoon Doo-joon, but all of CNBlue was on one Basketball team so I had to catch that). I keep thinking him of like this cute little ball of cuteness. Ha!

what worries me is that for all their deficiencies, Lee Jong-seok and Kim Woo-bin had both shown better by way of acting chops and charisma BEFORE their School 2013 casting (based on what they did in High Kick, A Gentleman's Dignity/TTBY and their drama specials).

and as we saw with Krystal, it's very easy for an actor who's been written to be nothing but cute and adorable in a part in one drama, to show up their limitations quite painfully when they have to play the lead and carry a show. I hope that doesn't happen with Kang Min-hyuk.

This drama needs to confirm its cast already, they're barely a month away from premiering.

I was excited to see Lee Yubi in a lead role at first but knowing what we do about the team (not the guys behind the original School/School 2013) and the casting process behind this so far, I'll have to keep my expectations low.

For those who are skeptical of Kang's acting ability, I can guarantee you he is one of the best new actors in Korea today. I've never seen him sing or play drums, but I am willing to bet his acting is even better than his musical talents. I saw him for the first time in "Unexpected You" and was BLOWN AWAY by this young chap's natural and funny acting skills. I was wondering why the big lead roles haven't been knocking down his door by now. So happy to hear he is going to be on-screen again, even though I don't really watch high school dramas. But really, please give "Unexpected You" a chance, you will fall in love with his character.

It seems Minhyuk has just turned down the role... claiming that it clashes with CNBLUE concerts in April and May.

Probably that's not the real reason, since it's not stopping Jonghyun from doing Orange Marmalade and it doesn't seem the type of thing that would make you change your mind in a week.

I really wanted to see him in the role though =(

Let's hope that if it is an FNC actor that it can be Kwak Dong Yeon!

I think it could possibly be the same thing that happened with Yonghwa and 'Heirs'. Minhyuk might have turned down the role due to online backlash. I adore both of them, but I would be kind of happy if the news about Minhyuk turning down the role is true. I've liked him in dramas but I haven't seen him in anything so far that makes me think he can pull off what Lee Jong Suk and Kim Woo Bin did as actors in 'School 2013'. This isn't the drama to test the waters to see if you're lead material. It should already be a done deal that you are lead material before you receive the lead role in the 'School' series. I honestly wish Minhyuk could do 'Orange Marmalade' and Yeo Jin Goo could do this new version of 'School'. He would honestly be the perfect person to follow in the footsteps of all the lead actors who've starred in this series.

'School' is a successful drama franchise. It's very rare for most second seasons of a drama on a broadcast network to do well. The fact that it could have four seasons, be brought back ten years later and still be a critical and ratings success is quite an accomplishment. I don't think Minhyuk wants to be seen as an actor who had his agency gift him a coveted lead role in such a prominent drama. If he takes the role and fails and the drama does poorly because of it (eg. 'Blood'), it wouldn't just affect the drama, it could hurt the future of the franchise itself.

'Dream High' looked like it was poised to be a 'School' like franchise, but that was destroyed for the time being because of the disaster that was 'Dream High 2'. I'm convinced 'School 2013' only happened because the failure of 'Dream High 2' killed a possible third season for that series. 'School 2013' was a Mon-Tues drama that aired around the same time of the year that both seasons of 'Dream High' did.

FNC has the rights to do this drama and shouldn't put the greed to push their own talent over the quality of the drama. I hope they chose an amazing writer and PD for this and truly cast solid leads and supporting actors all around. The last thing I want to see is this next season of 'School' becoming the next 'Dream High 2'.

Omg...now Lee Yoobi rejected the lead role too just a few hours right after Minhyuk rejected. Her agency didn't even give an explanation... I'm so sad :( but the good news is this paves way for fresh new actors. I just hope there isn't something wrong with the script that we're seeing people rejecting the role. I mean, this happened with KMHM but that drama turned out to be a masterpiece. However, it was the opposite for Blood... I'm now glad that if there us something wrong with the script, Minhyuk took himself out before anything happens :) it's either that or Minhyuk is responsible enough not take on leading roles too early...unlike Ahn Jae Hyun. I still like AJH, but he wasn't ready for leading roles yet. I'll still watch future roles by AJH, but I can't really judge him yet since I've only watched the first 2 episodes of Blood. He may be a lot better later in the drama.
