News bites: March 14, 2015

  • Kim Jung-hoon (Her Legend) has just been cast as the lead in a joint Korean-Japanese film called Tears! Light Up The Moon. He’ll star as a promising young music producer, and it will be a modern adaptation of the story of the Golden Demon, which itself was a Korean adaptation of a series of Japanese novellas completed in 1909. The tale of two young lovers has oft been brought to life on stage and on screen, and this updated version will be filmed on location at Mt. Fuji, Shizuoka and Pusan. Tears! Light Up The Moon will premiere simultaneously in Japan and Korea in early 2016. [Star News]
  • SHINee’s Onew will play the lead in the web drama Dating Was The Easiest, which is based on (what else?) an eponymous webtoon. His character is a guardian spirit of the mountains/tiger-turned-human (a little fantastical, yes, but check out the webtoon if you’re having a hard time picturing the character) and the show will be about Onew’s cheeky relationship with a high school girl. Park Hae-mi (Jang-gook Becomes Dallae) and Sung Dong-il (It’s Okay It’s Love) will also appear, and Dating Was The Easiest will be released at the end of April for smartphones on Beetm TV. [TV Report]

  • Onew, Gil Eun-hye

  • Gil Eun-hye (Rosy Lovers, School 2013) will transform into a two-faced villainess for Orange Marmalade, KBS’s upcoming Friday miniseries. She’s got the looks, top grades, and money — the only thing she hasn’t been able to get is the heart of Yeo Jin-gu, and she’ll do anything to get his attention. As Yeo’s relationship with vampire Seolhyun veers into romantic territory, she’ll be overcome with jealousy and the claws will come out. Maybe everyone’s favorite mama bear Lee Il-hwa (the Answer Me series) can protect Yeo from Gil’s vindictive nature; she’s just signed on to play his mother. It appears a love of vampires runs in the family, as she’s remarried to a vamp! The fantasy romance drama airs on Fridays beginning in May. [Osen, Joy News]
  • Add another You From Another Star alum to KBS’s upcoming Producer: Na Young-hee (What’s With This Family) will turn into an entertainment executive in charge of idol star Cindy (played by IU). She joins You From Another Star’s writer Park Ji-eun and Kim Soo-hyun, who thank the drama gods, has confirmed his return to dramaland as one of the foursome of leads. While Na will appear to fawn over her idol ward, Cindy better watch out, as Na will scheme against her when her back’s turned. Funny how it sounds like exactly the type of agency exec Song-yi’s wacky mama fought against the last time she and writer Park worked together! [MBN]

  • Han Go-eun, Jeon Seok-ho

  • Han Go-eun (Will You Love And Give It Away) is headed to the big screen in Black Hand, her first foray into the horror movie genre. She’ll play a plastic surgeon who loses her hand in a suspicious accident. When she has to undergo an operation to reconnect her severed appendage, the hospital chief (and her secret lover), Kim Sung-soo (Can We Love), will perform the surgery. I’m sure it will be frightening, but I’ll admit I dissolved into fits of giggles at the thought of Han’s hand going rogue on her, a la The Claw. [Ten Asia]
  • Jeon Seok-ho (Assistant Manager Ha in Misaeng) has just wrapped the lead in Little Big Brother, a human drama film. While he was mostly known for his stage and indie film work prior to Misaeng, since the hit show’s run, the offers have poured in. [OBS]
  • Awww, Jang-soo Company is finally here, and it looks adorable. The two Over Flowers alums, Park Geun-hyung halbae and Yoon Yeo-jung noona have reunited for the first time in nearly 50 years, and their chemistry looks sweet. It will be about a Park, a newbie at love at age 70, Yoon, the flowershop woman who steals his heart, and the people around them who root for their last romance. Jang-soo Company is director Kang Je-kyu’s first romantic film and also includes performances from Jo Jin-woong, Han Ji-min, EXO’s Chanyeol, Hwang Woo Seul-hye, and Moon Ga-young. The movie hits theaters April 9. [Asia Economy, Joongang]

I hope Producer does justice to all 4 leads and doesn't end up with only Kim Soo-hyun and Gong Hyo-jin (predicted OTP according to some reports) registering in the minds of fans.

oh, and School 2015 is courting Lee Yubi for a main lead role (FINALLY!!! Though it makes me smile to remember School 2013 courted her too though she had to refuse because it clashed with Nice Guy's ending shoots - nice to see actresses who are talented and professional being given a break at last)

Man, I was really hoping to see GHJ and CTH paired up for Producer :c Still excited to see them in this drama though, as long as they aren't wasted.

Lee Yoo-bi! I'm happy for her, hope she accepts the role. I wonder if they'll give us a female-centric drama this time with School 2015.

I'm nervous about School 2015, honestly. They have just under six weeks before the first ep airs and haven't locked down cast yet, and the team behind this one isn't the one behind 2013. Also I hear whispers of an amnesia storyline which makes me really nervous.

But it could be Lee Yubi's big break, and as a die-hard fan I really hope she gets adequate screentime and a script that doesn't force her to be ridiculous. She works well even with the tiniest scraps of material, I hope this one is a success.

"human drama film" : I wish there was more details about this but it's good to know Misaeng is bringing success to practically everyone who was in it

and I watched the trailer of Jang-soo Company, it really does look heartwarming and endearing

Hmmm.. I've been seeing idol-actors doing web dramas. I think that's great. They can improve their acting there before getting parts in a TV Kdrama. Should leave those to the professionals until they prove their worth.

exactly, no need for any subpar idol-actors to be stinking up prime time dramas until they actually develop the skills.

and when you think about the demographic to which idols appeal, it makes more sense to put them on web-based platforms for acting projects, instead of casting them in a Big 3 project in the hope that their fanbase will tune in (as shown time and again, they will not. Not in the absence of a decent-ish script).

I'm happy to hear that Onew auditioned for the role. The production team held open auditions to decide on the cast. Also, it's good to know that the PD of School 2013 is a part of the team. I think IRIS and Bad Guy's PD is involved as well. I'm eager to see who the female lead will be~

I can't wait for Producers. YFAS was just THAT good, and having the same writer and actor teaming up with a brilliant bunch of leads just makes me so excited!

I really missed Soo-hyun in dramaland so I'm hoping it's the usual 16 or 20 episode-drama. Heaven knows Park Ji-eun can incorporate even an extension without disrupting perfect story flow.

are you guys not fans?

who's Dara?

(not sure why awcoconuts is obligated to post about every single casting in kdramas, some might just not seem that noteworthy)

Sandara Park of 2NE1. She has that web drama called Dr. Ian.

KPOP 101. Four groups to know before becoming a KPOP fan. Girls Generation, Super Junior, Big Bang and 2NE1. lol

....but this is a kdrama site, not kpop.

It's a bit much to demand acknowledgement of every idol (or whoever's 'top' anyway) from db, the groups may be known names but I think I can speak for a fair few of us who would not be able to pick members of those groups out of a lineup. The same goes for the guy too.

0

I do not visit dramabeans for kpop. I was confused as to who Dara is too until someone said its Sandara. Hehe. This is probably a hint to some guys here where I'm from.

0

Well, she's more noteworthy than Onew I think if we are basing it on who is the more famous idol of the two.

Maybe?

I have no idea who either of them are, but I don't think it's appropriate for Hagar to use that tone against awcoconuts for simply......not posting about some idol you're a fan of.

Tone?!!! I was just honestly curious for a sec because I didn't see the news here that IT...I'm a huge fan of this site so I didn't mean to disrespect anyone lol

0

She played Rei in Return of Iljimae if ya need a Kdrama reference. lol

0

@Hagar - the writers here run the site on their own time and their own passion.

Saying things like "why have you not posted about ________ (fill in the blank idol) getting cast, are you not fans?" and "it's expected" is pretty accusing and sounds like you're demanding the site covers drama news according to your tastes. That's rather entitled and not cool.

0

It's not weird, you're just out of the loop. That bit of news has been out for a while.

awcoconuts posted about that news in January's News Bites: http://www.dramabeans.com/2015/01/news-bites-january-24-2015/

You might want to check those things before you claim people aren't fans. Doesn't matter if they're fans or not though. This site is not obligated to post every single news that you find noteworthy.

I must have missed this one. I check the site daily that's why I didn't think they posted it without going back

and I'm not saying they are obligated to write about it. it's just that I like reading drama news here coz it gives you more insight on the story kpop sites don't have so I was just checking on here to see bits about the story and such and not just casting news.

That is true. DB usually offers more insight on the story and character descriptions, as well as info on the ones behind the drama (writer + director) which some readers look forward to.

Although Dara is a well known kpop idol, she's just starting out as an actress. So it's expected that she won't make top news on this site. I'm not fond of medical dramas, but her character seems interesting and I like Kim Young-kwang. I hope it does well for both of them.

Yeah it's nice to know what to expect from the people behind the show. and I get that she isn't Kdrama relevant yet but I thought that Kim Young-kwang had a fan base here that's why it was weird that it wasn't posted about( I know better now lol)

idk why my first statement was taken negatively I was just curious about the drama that's all.

It is seriously humbling to see the last poster. Both of them look so young despite their obvious physical age. I'm so glad that there's a movie that centers around people of their age. If I live in Korea, that would be a good excuse to drag my ahjumma or ahjussi to the cinema.

Me too... Can't wait to see the drama. I wish its beautiful as the webtoon. I'm looking forward to the part where Jaemin(Yeojingu)'s mother's new husband is a vampire(but good) thus jaemin's hatred for vampires. If that part will not be change though.... I know Mari(Seolhyun) has a younger brother( he was cute in the webtoon) who is quite mischeivous cos he still can't control his thirst for blood so he even chews RATS!! Haha I know its gross but its funny and cute since that's in webtoon. I'm gonna watch out for Joseph's (Mari's young bro) potrayal in the drama. Haha really can't wait.

Super excited for Producer. I literally screamed for joy when I found out that the four leads had confirmed.

I'm also super psyched for Onew's drama. I am firmly of the belief that talented actors should get parts over idol actors (although I am willing to give anyone a chance), but I can't help but be ecstatic as a huge fan of SHINee with Onew as my ultimate bias. I am glad that it is a smaller project because he has done so little acting. If he does prove to be talented he can hone his skills this way and prove his ability for future bigger projects.

Cannot wait for this new crop of dramas! Everything but Ho-gu is boring me right now. Enjoyed Kill Me, Heal Me but things felt drawn out in the end.
