Chaebol’s Daughter loses Moon-Park pairing, gains Park Hyung-shik

There’s been a casting change-up for SBS’s new melodrama Chaebol’s Daughter, which was initially courting Park Seo-joon (Kill Me, Heal Me) to play the leading man and Moon Geun-young (Goddess of Fire Jung-yi) to play the titular heroine. Now reps from both actors’ camps have declared that they’re passing on the roles, which leaves the drama without a leading cast.

It’s not quite back to square one though, because they’ve added ZE:A idol Park Hyung-shik to the cast as a secondary character. He’s been steadily rising in the ranks with supporting roles (Nine, Heirs, What’s With This Family), and will play one of the major characters in Chaebol’s Daughter.

The melodrama from the writer-director team behind A Warm Word is about a chaebol’s daughter who wants to be loved for herself and not her money, and so disguises her identity to become a part-time worker at a food market. The male lead is a cynical man from a poor family who believes that love is emotional manipulation and a luxury for the wealthy, and the drama is about them struggling to reconcile their love and their money in the real world.

Park Hyung-shik has been cast to play the executive director of a shopping mall. He grew up so wealthy that he never once had to tie his own shoelaces (this is a good thing?). He spends his money well and gets by on his looks, so people assume that he’s just coasting by in life. But he’s a confident young man who believes that he’s going to inherit his family’s shopping mall someday.

One day he meets the part-time employee at the market and falls for her, making him rivals with the hero. It’s not the most inventive love triangle — one guy’s rich, one guy’s poor — but the heroine’s disguise does shake things up a bit, and since her stipulation is that she’s loved for herself and both boys believe her to be poor, they have equal potential to win her heart. It’s a shame that Moon Geun-young and Park Seo-joon won’t be working together, but with both of them out, at least it wipes the slate clean for a new pairing altogether. Maybe it even leaves Park Seo-joon open to headline a rom-com? *puppy eyes*

Chaebol’s Daughter is aiming for a June premiere following Heard It Through the Grapevine.

Let imagine a new pairing for leads! For male lead, I want young and talented actors like Lee Jong suk and Kim woo bin. But these two are overrated. Kang Ha Neul and Sung joon are suitable. Please give a chance to shine. For Female lead, Baek jin hee, Han groo, and jung so min are good choices.

She absolutely looks good as cross-dresser. Pretty convincing, despite her petite frame.. Just watch Painter Of The Wind for confirmation...

But Park Hyung Shik is good.. For the leads, hmm.. Maybe Kim Woo Bin/Lee Jong Suk and Lee Yoo Bi reunion?? Or PSH. Coz SBS really love PSH.

All the best Hyungsik. I like his character as the Cha maknae in the family drama. I wonder who will be his co-star. Does Han Groo name still attached to this project.

our sweet hogu won Best New Actor in that film awards for his movie, Set Me Free. Have yet to watch it but the trailer looks good. kind of strange watching woo shik playing a dark, solemn character..i believe he also won the best actor award for this movie too at last year's busan film festival or something.

congrats, choi woo shik.. keep up the good work!

*whooooooooooop whooooooooop*. Okay, we have a clean slate now. So, Sung joon and Baek jin hee, maybe? Now that hyung-sik is in, I sorta want the leads to be young actors. And will someone just cast Han Groo already, dammit!

"or park hae jin and park se young".
I love park Hae jin but Park Se young gives me the serious heebie-jeebies when I see her on my screen. So No, thankyouverymuch.

But really, anyone would do. I really don't care much about the cast for this drama.

Why is there so much trouble casting someone these days? Are the scripts for these dramas that bad or is the management very flawed? I think the only upcoming drama without any casting issues was Descendants of the sun. They just announced the main cast in one go and that's it. Why can't other dramas do that and saves us all the headache.

There are others like Producers, Mask, Hwajung and prob a few more I don't remember. But yes, the casting chaos for most dramas is really odd. I don't think I've ever seen so many casting rejections before across all three networks.

I wonder why this is. Is it that the working conditions are bad and actors are demanding more from the studios than they are willing to give? Or is it because working in China is now an option, so actors have more options and are becoming choosier with their projects? Or is it because the scripts are bad? I can't help but wonder if this has any correlation with the fact that the ratings for TV is much lower now than it used to be.

Me too, I'd love to know why there's so much turmoil lately. Or maybe it was just never public in the past?

I think it was just never public in the past.now that there are more internet sites, they report alot of unconfirmed stuff

Yeah, I too think the low ratings are scaring people off and they prefer to do movies instead. The filming conditions are better for films too, even though the CF deals, where the real money lies, usually come after a popular drama.

The current round of casting offers going out, rejections etc are happening several months before the dramas in question even premiere. I'm guessing the ratings slump has a lot of people reluctant to commit to tv and take the fall if a series fails.

And anyway, struggling to cast a drama and not getting your first choice isn't necessarily a bad thing. Look at Kill Me, Heal Me. Or I Hear Your Voice (rejected by multiple actresses before Lee Bo-young took the role). Or Gaksital (Joo-won!)

It might be that they're scoping the public reaction. Given that ratings are low, if people aren't keen on the actors, they might be even lower. I don't know what the public opinion (in korea) is though so that may be completely wrong. (i.e. I know han groo got a negative reaction with the scholar who walks the night)

Okay, another thought. Can we get Lee min ho on this project. C'mon, will someone just shove a script down his throat already. Its been long since we saw him. So Lee min ho and Han Groo??? No? Yes? Okay, moving on...............

I really like Park Hyung-shik as an actor - he has the chops, and works well with what he's given even if he isn't quite at the level of his bandmate Im Shi-wan yet.

He's likeable and expressive (watch Sirius if you don't believe me) and holds his own even against senior costars. So news that he's being promoted to second lead in a weekday drama makes me happy. He was adorable in What's With This Family, which makes me ok with him not getting the girl here since he did get one that time, hehe.
