Kolorful Palette: True colors [Girl Who Sees Smells]

Is this the week where a cliffhanger from Girl Who Sees Smells actually amounts to something? Or will Jae-hee simply continue to “catch” Cho-rim at the end of every single episode without really catching her? I wait with bated breath.

Meanwhile, I’m rather enjoying Jae-hee’s nefarious antics and have been looking forward to drawing Namgoong Min in his 8 Mile outfit for weeks now. I think he makes a great villain and I honestly didn’t really care what specific scene I chose as long as it showcased his darker side. This shot is technically from when Jae-hee is talking to Detective Oh and remembers back to when he captured his wife, but I didn’t include the wife in the background in the actual drawing since it was more a distraction than anything.

I wanted to be a bit looser this week (I know I say that every week) but this week I think I made actual progress and am pretty happy with the liveliness that the square conte adds. The colors are a bit at odds with a serial killer thematically, but I think the contrast works well for a character like Jae-hee who has personas that differ so much from each other. This is definitely motivation to take more liberties in the future.

I’ve been a fan of Namgoong Min ever since Can You Hear My Heart and even though I think he has to overact a bit in this drama for the sake of creepiness, I still think he’s one of the strongest cast members and I’m really hoping his past gets fleshed out more. I certainly think that Namgoong Min possesses the prowess to make us even empathize with him if given the correct backstory, but I’m not sure there are enough episodes left for the drama to really go there.

I never realized until this past week that Shin Se-kyung isn’t very popular (acting-wise) since I only ever saw her in Tree With Deep Roots where she primarily plays someone who is mute, but I thought she did a good job in that role at least. In Girl Who Sees Smells I haven’t had any complaints either, although I rarely do in rom-coms. She and Park Yoochun are both actors I feel fairly neutral about. They don’t ever wow me, but they don’t distract me with poor acting either. I do think they make a cute couple though!

My only huge qualm with this show is that the police incompetence is so over-the-top, and it leaves me wondering why I continue to like this drama as much as I do. I think it’s the pleasant combination of cutesiness and rivalry that keeps it feeling brisk and fun, and thankfully Jae-hee seems to have a brain at least. It’s borderline comical that he’s even the best communicator! He has no issues practically proclaiming his guilt and pointing out the phone tap to Mu-gak, but meanwhile Detective Oh, Detective Yeom, Cho-rim, and Mu-gak are all keeping “secrets” from each other, even though they’re all already in on said secrets and could be working together. Sigh.

At least all the misunderstandings and miscommunications were short-lived, and it seems like the detective team is finally stepping up its game, which will just make it even better when Jae-hee stays one step ahead. I predict a kidnapping in Cho-rim’s future, but I wonder if Jae-hee feels any genuine affection for her and if that will make him conflicted at all (I honestly don’t know if he feels affection or if he’s schizoid and uninterested).

Either way, with four episodes left, I think there’s plenty of ground left to cover, so I don’t think the next couple of weeks will disappoint and I’m not too worried about my interest waning. The Producers could be a slight distraction though. Kim Soo-hyun is back!

I agree with this commentary.

As always, I admire your artistic skills!

your painting actually gave Chef more emotions in his eyes. This painting gave off a sad, thoughtful vibe for him.

with regard to the actual drama: gahh the crime/police incompetence in this drama is just crazy. But the chemistry between the main leads are just sooo cute. I'm a big law n order, CSI fan, so for me to overlook all the stupid procedural really says something about how much I like the rom-com bit.

Back to your art: I was sorta hoping you'll do more arts on sensory couple/girl who sees smell. I was really hoping for one of those domestic cute scenes between the lead couple. But I really like what you've done here. Thanks :)

I always love your art. I am glad you picked this actor/character to draw because, like you, he intrigues me (both the actor and character). You captured that mystery here very well!

The colours kind of remind me of a sunset for some reason, but that's just me! Like day turning to night.. we get to see the other side of Chef Kwon. I like how the colours get darker as they get closer to him.

I also only watched Shin Se Kyung in Tree With Deep Roots and she was not bad there. What's more.. she was playing opposite Jang Hyuk!! But I like her more here. She should always and forever do comedies!! I read translated articles that said Yoochun felt awkward around Shin Se Kyung when they first started filming but obviously we couldn't tell since we all love how cute they are together right from the beginning. I'm glad Shin Se Kyung is changing some people's minds about her here!

I also saw Yoochun last in Sungkyunkwan Scandal, where he had the same facial expression for 80% of the show. I'm happy I like him so much more here!

I really liked the way you humanized Jaehee with his eyes- he looks less straightforwardly psychotic and more contemplative in this piece. He looks as if he's thinking wistfully, considering something than just creepily watching over his victim write the autobiographies for him, and that's really cool~ I also liked Namgoong Min since Can You Hear My Heart, but none of his works really stood out to me until this one :o

Beautiful drawing, Fanderay...as always. I'm also glad that you chose to draw the Chef. And this particular shot. He's one of my favorite character in this drama. Gosh, I can't believe I'm liking a serial killer, and I'm saying it out loud! Er, writing it out loud lol I guess it's because he's always steps ahead of...everyone. Although I do wish that people around him are shown to be more...competent. Okay, they would eventually catch him, but until then, I wish that although the chef stays ahead, at least the police are shown that they're THISCLOSE to him, the keeping-viewers-at-the-edge-of-their-seats kind of close.

This drama had the potential to be one of my favorites. (I like Shin Se Kyung's acting. I have since I first saw her in "The Great Queen Seuondeok.") And I thought Micky and she had super cute chemistry. Now, I wonder if I'm going to stick with it until the final. I am already reading the recaps before I dare to watch the episodes.
Thanks for your artwork--and your comments.

SKS did not bother me as much in Tree with Deep Roots. Maybe because she was mute, and was sort of in the background. She does bother me in this drama. I would have loved this drama more with a different actress. i love the other 3 leads.. They are awesome..
