The gang is assembled for Answer Me 1988

Go Kyung-pyo, Hyeri, Park Bo-gum

Well that only took forever. Answer Me 1988, the third installment of tvN’s throwback youth series from PD Shin Won-ho and writer Lee Woo-jung, has at last announced its main cast after months of speculation, rumors, retractions, and recriminations. First, the good news: Go Kyung-pyo (Cantabile Tomorrow)!! I love him and his awesome comedic chops, and I’m thrilled that he’s scored his first leading role in a show that’s easily going to make him a breakout star.

Idol Hyeri (Hyde, Jekyll, Me) has been attached to the show for quite some time as the lead character, and she’s now been confirmed as the headliner. I know that Jung Eun-ji and Go Ara weren’t established actresses before starring in Answer Me 1997 and Answer Me 1994, but I’m still not excited about Hyeri’s casting when they could’ve gone for acting chops over cute. She’ll have a lot to prove, but I hope for the drama’s sake that she’s got some hidden depth we’ve never seen before.

Park Bo-gum is also confirmed, after an early announcement. I’m looking forward to some bromance between him and Go Kyung-pyo, since these two have been co-stars in three other projects before this one (Cantabile Tomorrow, Chinatown, Roaring Currents). I know we were promised that 1988 wouldn’t have a husband-hunting framing device, but that hardly means we won’t be getting a love triangle. Somehow knowing that they’re buddies in real life would ease the pain, I think.

The rest of the gang includes a few newer faces to dramaland, most of them from indie movies: film actress Ryu Hye-young (Spy, My Dictator, Slow Video), newbie Ryu Joon-yeol (Social Phobia), and funnyman Ahn Jae-hong (C’est Si Bon, Twenty, Joku King). Rounding out the youths are Lee Dong-hwi (Divorce Lawyer in Love, Joseon Gunman), and musical actor Choi Sung-won.

Lee Il-hwa, Sung Dong-il, and Kim Sung-kyun will return as Mom, Dad, and a neighbor ajusshi, in the story about three neighboring families. As a franchise that’s known for casting fresh faces and launching careers, expectations have been high for producers to deliver a buzzworthy ensemble for the third time in a row. I’m pretty confident that Go Kyung-pyo will be in his element; here’s hoping that the rest of the ’88 gang is willing to put themselves out there for a laugh.

Answer Me 1988 airs on Fridays and Saturdays in September.

I'll probably check this out but will definitely bail if the first few episodes does not grab me. I am not a fan of any of the announced cast so I am not inclined to stick to it. I dunno anything about Hyeri's acting skills (or lack thereof). I just know she just recently became popular because of variety shows. She's good looking but I don't find her stunning like Go Ara or having that unique beauty and charisma like Eun Ji.

I´m really happy about Go Kyung-Pyo and really sad about Lee Yi-Kyung. And dissapointed about Hyeri.

Worst news of today. Why producers, WHY?! I am still gonna go ahead and watch the pilot episode and judge whether I shall continue it or not.

But I swear to god if Hyeri's role is a cutese ainngggg role again, I'm gonna murder her. She was bad enough as it is in Hyde, Jekyll, Me.

I am not convinced she had some hidden acting chops.

Argh!

So disappointed in so many levels.

Oh dear, Park Bo Gum is gonna be the Chilbongie of this show isn't he? Sigh...
That being said, I do love both Go Kyung Pyo and Park Bo Gum, and Answer Me 1988 will probably completely change the way their careers have been progressing. Hyeri I'm less enthusiastic about, but I trust that the PD knew what he was doing when he cast her. Hwaiting, AM 1988!

It could have been Jin Se-yeon. You know...like shit vs diarrhea. If only the talented actors had sponsors too ~sigh~

Unless the trailers are god awful like 'Blood' I will be open minded and give the first ep a go.

When I first saw this news I just laughed and laughed and then laid my head on my desk. Well I'm one of those people who watch the reply series from afar, so it's not that affecting to me which Hyeri is casted. However I do pity those who dislike her and enjoy the series.

Let's hope the director and scriptwriter have a plan in mind. Other than that yay for Go Kyung Po!

Does anyone think this could be a pattern for the Reply series? I mean first they casted Eunji who was an idol, then Go Ara who is an actress, and now their casting a idol again?

I want HanGroo n LeYikyung, I love GoKyungpyo, ParkBogum is not bad either, but Hyeri is like the bad news even for me. Hope they manage to make it good, despite all my doubts.

I was anticipating 1994 SO MUCH but it end up being boring and irrational for my taste so I dropped it.
I had no expectation for 1997 yet I loved it to the very end.
I don't know what to do with this one! so I'm gonna wait and see...

I might give this a try. Although I don't think (yet) that it can match to how great 1997 has been, for me. (I like 1994, and is still trying to finish it, but my tendency is to zone out in the middle especially when I have to spend time on an hour and a half long episode that takes too long a time to get to ita point ~sigh~) But 1997 did cast a variety of idols and it turned out well, so why not.

Hyeri auditioned for the role so.. maybe, JUST maybe they liked her acting??? The reply people never really relied on popular/trending actors before. I don't see why they would want Hyeri unless they think she might be able to pull of the character. I'll watch the first few episodes before making judgment since they axed the 'who-is-the-husband' plotline.

Go Kyung Pyo? Omo I'm in (and with PBG cutie too). I'll always remember GKP as the chaebol in Potato Star (who had an adorable crush on Ha Yeon Soo)... which reminds me, I wish Ha Yeon Soo was cast as the lead instead! Anyway, still anticipating and hoping for the best for this show.

I am on 'I Hate Hyeri' team after watching Seonam, but I'll give her my second chance since I believe in Answer Me series' writer & PD. I didn't know Eunji and Ara as well when I started to watch Answer Me 1997 & 1994. *fingercrossed*

The 2 lead males are great! But what an absolute and total fail with Hyeri. I mean, I just cannot even imagine what they were thinking. There are actresses I cannot stand because I think their acting is poor and yet they keep getting roles anyhow. And there is Hyeri who cannot even be called an actress. Anyone who sat through the stink fest that was Hyde, Jekyll and Me knows that Hyeri not only cannot act, any bum off the street could do better. She is awful - actually, there is not even a word for how bad she is. One of the worst actresses I've ever seen in a Kdrama. Terrible casting decision.

I have no idea how bad HyeRi is because I didn't watch Hyde Jekyll Me but as for Go Kyung Po, he gives too much Chilbong vibes (cross fingers) which I don't want to watch again. I hope his character is not close to Chilbong's. I'guess I've just got to trust the creators of the drama that had made my heart go pitter patter twice and better the second time.

Oh damn. I was so excited to see park bo gum in another drama. His acting in I remember you (with Seo Inguk) was so refreshing and impressionable that I was really looking forward so much to his next play. BUT IT JUST HAVE TO BE PARK HYERI WHYYYYYYY

Looks like everyone who commented on this thread are eating their words right now. Hahahahaha!! Hyeri is doing a great job! She acts so naturally and really owns the character. And for me, Reply 1988 is the best among the reply series.

...as a huge fan of the Reply series....[1997,1994]..I think that the casting on this one isn't really that important...cause when you're really a fan, you dont care about the actors ..its about the character they portray..and the story behind ..and as we all know.. R1997 was great as it is..R1994 was equally daebak...awesome...and if you want a feel-good. k-series. this show is worth watching for ....that you dont need a villain to run for a show ..all you need is FRIENDS...

just a fangirl ;)

It's so funny seeing people bash hyeri before the drama aired. Reply 1988 did fantastic! Hyeri did an amazing job btw :) I'm so proud of her! I didn't expect that.
