Kim Tae-hee to play mystery heiress opposite Joo-won

Looks like there are no casting surprises for Yong-pal, SBS’s new medical drama that’s been courting Joo-won and Kim Tae-hee to star. On the heels of Joo-won’s confirmation, Kim Tae-hee has signed on as well, for what will be her first drama in two years since Jang Ok-jung, Live By Love. I hope they have some chemistry, not that we have any indication that this will be a romance drama. Oh, who’re we kidding, like they’re not going to have the two leads fall in love.

The new drama comes from the PD of God’s Gift–14 Days and the writer of Reset and tells the story of a surgeon who starts making illegal house calls in order to support his sick sister. Joo-won stars as a third-year resident with unparalleled surgical skills that he applies to emergency situations. He’s got the prickly personality to go along with his genius, naturally, and is known for being rude and above all, shameless when it comes to money.

He starts to make house calls to people who need emergency doctors but can’t go to hospitals for whatever reason, and in exchange for asking no questions, he can afford to keep his sister on the weekly dialysis treatments that she needs. He’ll have all sorts of shady clientele, as well as the filthy rich and ultra secretive.

That’s where Kim Tae-hee fits into the story. She’ll play a chaebol heiress whose family owns the hospital where Joo-won is a resident. She’s a character shrouded in mystery who lives a secluded life, and only has contact with a few doctors and her oppa, the chaebol group chairman. She was intelligent and bright in her youth, but after a big accident, she’s been hidden away from the world during her slow recovery.

The situation does sound interesting, if only because it sounds super shady to keep your sister so hidden, but I do worry that it sounds like a damsel in distress character. Hopefully there’s more to her than being a princess locked in a tower, because for one, that’s boring, and because Kim Tae-hee is much better when she gets to be bright and bubbly. Melodramatic characters don’t click as well with her, so it’d be nice if she could have some spunk, at least.

Obviously the secret doctor with the double life and a codename (the titular Yong-pal) is the cool character to tune in for, and with Joo-won playing him, it’ll be hard to pass it up, even with all the TV doctoring. And you know how I feel about TV doctoring.

Yong-pal follows Mask in August.

ditto. i read a lot of comments about her, and everyone said the same thing. that given the right character, she can do really well. otherwise, she can be just a 'forgettable' character.

there's still a lot of mystery about her character based on the synopsis. i dont want her to be written as just a damsel in distress, to quote girlfriday. i hope she has an agenda on her own, and her own strength and willpower that will affect the storyline tremendously.

hoping for a success!

You're nuts - KTH is one of the most beautiful woman in the world (not just Korea).

And so what about the age gap (doesn't seem to be an issue the other way around)? And KTH still looks like she is in her 20s.

0

KTH is much better looking as a female than Joo-won is as a male.

0

Why the hating though? She deserves a younger partner. She is totally worth even better looking than Joo-Won.

I absolutely get the "better" part in your comment (since everyone has bisases or personal preferences, you name it!) but the "younger" part sounds a bit rude and inappropriare, tbh :-/
Let's not bash female actors on account of their age...I can vividly remember all the comments in Angry Mom shipping a huge age gap between KHS and JS, who was a student.
Talent, on the other hand, is a whole different story...

this drama seems more male-centered than female. so i guess the strength of the lead actress may not be too much of an influence to the success of this project. i've watched Reset, this writer's previous drama. and the characters were well written. so i think things look quite positive for this project.

I wouldn't be so rash to judge.

While KTH has deservedly got criticism for her acting, she gave one of the finest comedic performance in "My Princess" (where she not only hit the comedic parts, but was more convincing in the emotional scenes than many popular actresses who get lauded for their acting).

Required fields are marked *

I'm excited to see Kim Tae again but Joo Won urgh I can't stand him, this drama sounds so lame, but I know I will watch for her, I wish they had a better lead because I don't like JW face at all, his acting is too weird for me, but if KT is not an actress what? have you seen her in IRIS or My princess she is versatil and yes she has some limitations but she is way better than Park Shin Hye or Goo Hye Sun, I hate seen people always hating on Kim and prasing others that act worse than her or how about Lee Min Ho he can't act either they are just pretty faces to me, and don't make me start with Joo Won which I don't even find attactive at all.
Every time that I see someone hating KT they always said the same CF model lalala, I think they only hate her because she is so pretty and they are just jealous, get over it.

Some will say the opposite. They'd wish for a better lead actress. I'm not a fan of either one so I don't care.

I liked KTH in my Princess. She nailed it and more. Same for her role in JOJ. I didn't feel the same way for her acting in IRIS. Kim So-Yeon stole the show there for me.

I knew Joo Won was talented and will make it big some day after watching him in Baker King. He is so intense, believable and perfect in melo-dramas but I hate melos. I will probably fall in love with him in a sweet rom.com or a sageuk.

you are totally right about Kim So-Yeon in IRIS for my was not surprise that she stole it, because I knew her for my first k drama All about Eve, but the KT for me killed it in the scene where she cries with the roses, that'is why I liked her so much, the my princess was the best super funny and 99 days with astart was good too sometimes I feel like they are not directing her right and she has potential to melos and rom-coms too, I just hoping that she can do some hit soon.

I disagree to an extent. Take Park Shinhye for example, she started acting in dramas the same year as Kim Taehee, but the difference is Park Shinhye was a child with very small roles while Kim Taehee was already taking big/lead roles at that time. Kim Taehee's experience would be considered further than Shinhye's back then to begin with. To compare Kim Taehee with someone 10 years younger than her is silly. They should compare Kim Taehee to other people in their 30s that started at around the same time as her with adult/big roles like Gong Hyojin and Song Hyekyo.

AMEN! !! People really don't know what they're talking about.

0

please don't compare gong hyojin to kth or even song hae gyo.. pleaseee no.. :(

0

it's funny how you contradict yourself.

you said you cant stand Joowon coz he's not even attractive, then you mention his acting is weird. but then you praise Kim Taehee and said she's a good actress. and then you actually compare her with some actress who lots of people considered better than KTH.

Joowon's acting is one of the best there is in Kdrama. he chooses projects where popularity is not even a concern for him, and the projects are those which can versatile his acting experience. he's not stereotyped at all, and he acts with passion and intensity. his best genre is definitely melo-drama, and this character seems perfect for him.

it seems to me you just like someone coz they're pretty. you cant recognize talent if the person is staring right into your face. such a childish and silly comment. i dont even know why i bothered to reply you...

yes you are correct,
joo won is best than kth because he takes roles which are so hard to do. i vote for joo won cause he is the best.

age gap is 11 years. can any one believe and still some are hating joo won as main lead like janesally. she is so wrong.

I never thought she was a great actress, but after seeing some of her recent works, she's improved a lot. I loved her in My Princess and thought she did really well in Jang Ok Jung. Joo Won is a hit or miss for me, but mostly a hit! So, I'm pretty excited for this! Glad both confirmed and can't wait to see what they both bring to the table.

Age doesn't bother me as long as they look like they match their characters' ages. And if they're supposed to be in the same general age range (which is probably the case), that seems believable enough to me.

Anyway, this sounds like fun and I will be waiting impatiently for it, I'm sure. :)

I don't get why people keep comparing this to Good Doctor. Is there anyone out there who gets his characters in Ojakgyo Brothers and Gaksital confused? Or thinks he was trying to replicate the success of OB by taking the role of Lee Kang To? Because he played a police officer in both of those (in back-to-back dramas, even). From what I can tell, there is nothing similar about Good Doctor and Yong Pal, other than doctors and possibly a hospital setting part of the time.

Required fields are marked *

He is playing a doctor again and acted as a policeman multiple times, although it is not implying a similar character it is the same profession. Joo Won he can act for sure and saying he nailed every single character is just wrong. His acting was not unique, I couldn't differentiate his acting from 7th grade and stealmyheart because they're just the same. He had exaggerated facial expressions which were not appropriate during certain scenes and made he looked overacting. His cryings in gaksital were too over the top to my taste.
His acting was best in good doctor when playing disable person but in romcom, he failed miserably. I am not saying he is a bad actor but he sometimes failed to give the right emotions and has a strong tendency to overact.

Honestly, I think it's simply because most actresses in their early-to-mid 20s can't help carry ratings so we keep seeing tons of noona-dongsaeng romances. Besides Suzy and Park Shinhye, there's really no one else that has a built-in audience. There's a new crop of young actors making it big every year (or at least gaining a good amount of popularity), but not actresses. All the big actresses are in their 30s (with a few exceptions of some 28 year olds like Moon Chaewon and Han Hyojoo)

It's a global disease nowadays, @soapbox. No younger female actors seem to attract audiences while lots of male ones pop up quite frequently and mostly successfully. Perhaps the Industry has specific criteria for female actors while ratings indicate otherwise. Too much ps or "cuteness" or too much focus on body prorportions lead to less interest in talent therefore to fewer actors who can act; especially female actors in their 20s, as you have very well pointed out.

@kalel

I do think looks are focused on instead of talent. I've noticed that Korean netizens make use of a criticism called "not an actress' face". If a girl they deem isn't attractive enough or different from the norm is trying to get into acting, they always say "Why is she trying to be an actress? She doesn't have an actress' face". It's really strange to me because I've never seen that criteria held for male actors from knetizens. They have a great variety of male looks, but they want all the women to look the same.

Even my love Gong Hyojin who gets positive comments get them in the form of "Gong Hyojin isn't beautiful, but..."

No wonder we never get new talent from women when the public have these expectation based on looks.

I can see how if the story kept them apart for most of it, and then they had a last coupla eps where they s'approchent, that would work. Otherwise, it's like chalk and chalk. No flint to spark. Same as the PMY and PIE pairing back in that baseball show. They were better off brother and sister than the OTP.

I think actresses are judged more harshly and even unfairly than actors. I hardly read of actors being called "not handsome enough" or too old.

Let me say this first, I am not a fan of any actresses and I am only a fan of Joo Won's acting. I have not formed any opinion of KTH as an actress, only having seen some of her in Jang Ok Jung(didn't complete the show). Yes, I did read that she can be a hit or miss in her performances. But from what I have seen of her, she is no worse than some actors who are very popular but not great at acting.

I was already anticipating this drama before Joo Won confirmed his participation. I loved God's Gift that much. An intriguing story with the right amount of mystery, melo and suspense is what I am looking for. With the right PD, it will be great. As long as the drama has competent cast, it's enough for me. I don't care about the ratings and this show will be the dark horse in the slot. I expect Scholar Who Walks the Night to be the most watched. Not sure about KTH but Joo Won isnt exactly the hallyu star who can pull in the ratings by himself. I am checking this out because this drama sounds the most interesting to me.
