Mask: Episode 15

Min-woo has clued in to one big secret, which means he’s got a lot to work through… but Seok-hoon puts the next phase of his revenge plan into motion, and Ji-sook will have to find a way to get Min-woo on her side — it’s literally a matter of life and death.

EPISODE 15: “The Target”

As Ji-sook waits for Min-woo to come home so she can come clean and tell him that she loves him again, Min-woo is busy getting the shock of his life. Mi-yeon had switched his work papers with the fingerprint results, which show that the person who touched the things in his safe was the same woman who used to work for his department store, and who is supposed to be dead.

Min-woo practically staggers through the streets, all of his wife’s comments about wearing a mask and not being Eun-ha now ringing with deeper meaning. He realizes the truth, that he’s married to a different woman, even as he tries to deny it.

Ji-sook tries to call him but he’s busy drinking himself into oblivion in a hotel room. He thinks all the way back to their wedding, and wonders how long ago the switch actually took place.

Seok-hoon and Mi-yeon engage in some couple target practice, after Mi-yeon tells her husband that she’s made sure Min-woo knows everything. Whoa, Mi-yeon turns out to be the better marksman by far. She gives Seok-hoon a tip to pay more attention to his own body than his target. Seok-hoon asks what her target is, and she says simply, “Min Seok-hoon. You.”

Min-woo stays out all night with his phone off, and all anyone knows is that his meeting with some buyers the previous day didn’t go well. Maid Yeon-soo does hear from him that he’s going straight to work, and tells the family that he said not to worry.

A package arrives for Papa Choi, which turns out to be a video clip of Eun-ha’s drowning, proving Mi-yeon as Eun-ha’s murderer. He watches his daughter leave Eun-ha to drown, horrified. There’s a letter instructing him to leave fifty percent of his shares to Min-woo, and appoint him as his successor at an upcoming charity event, or else the video will go public. As expected, the letter is from Seok-hoon.

When Seok-hoon had approached Eun-ha with his plan over a year ago, he’d said they could play it one of two ways — either paint Min-woo as a madman, or make him the SJ Group successor. Then they would kill him, and Eun-ha would inherit everything.

Ji-sook corners Seok-hoon to ask what he’s done with Min-woo, but he says if anything happens to Min-woo, it’s not his fault. He promised not to mess with Min-woo or his family. Ji-sook asks who tampered with her prompter at her speech, but Mi-yeon finds them before he can say anything other than that he doesn’t know.

Seok-hoon asks pointedly if Mi-yeon knows anything about the prompter, but she just says she thought the speech went well. She accuses Ji-sook of not knowing where her husband was last night, but Ji-sook just asks if she’s not worried about him too, since he’s her only brother.

Papa Choi calls Mi-yeon to talk privately, asking if Eun-ha ever acted strange (meaning Ji-sook). Mi-yeon says she was acting weird just now, throwing a fit at her for no reason. Papa tells Mi-yeon to stop messing with her.

Min-woo fixates on the fingerprint test results while at work, ignoring his phone. Ji-sook gets to work and confronts him about not coming home, but he refuses to look at her and just tells her to leave. She does, sadly, and Min-woo doesn’t look happy to have gotten his way.

Later Min-woo re-watches the news clips from when Byun Ji-sook supposedly drove off that cliff and died, on his way to meet with the prosecutor. He tries to talk himself out of the media’s suggestion that Ji-sook killed that loan shark that was in the car with her, repeating to himself that it had to have been staged to look that way — the woman he knows isn’t a murderer.

Even the prosecutor admits that the whole situation was strange, but that she had sufficient motive to commit a murder-suicide. Her family’s debt was pretty intense and the loan sharks were snapping at their heels.

Director Shim is alive and well, having only been buried to his chest before Seok-hoon offered him a flat one billion won (about $870,000) though he’d turned it down flat. Seok-hoon told his goons to kill him, and Shim had the nerve to offer Seok-hoon forty percent of the money they’d get when Min-woo is out of the way. He’s got leverage, since he’s arranged to have Seok-hoon’s name spread as his killer, along with all his secrets, if Shim goes missing.

Shim offers the same deal to Mi-yeon, who also accepts it — but only if she gets the sixty percent cut. She also wants him to find out Seok-hoon’s biggest weakness, the one that would completely ruin him.

Seok-hoon and Scar visit the hall where Min-woo will be named the SJ Group successor, and Seok-hoon takes note of the lighting equipment just over the podium where Min-woo will give his speech. Seok-hoon says the world will be a better place once Min-woo is dead.

Min-woo visits the department where Ji-sook used to work, and asks her old coworkers what kind of person she was. They have good things to say, and even defend that she would never have killed that loan shark.

He goes to her family’s coffee shop franchise, recognizing her family from the photo that was left in his room, and the woman that he thought was his wife’s nanny. Ji-hyuk misunderstands his presence, thinking that Min-woo is here to confront him, and promises not to see Eun-ha/Ji-sook anymore and begs Min-woo not to bother his family.

Min-woo gets up to go, but turns back to say that this all must have been hard on Ji-hyuk. Ji-hyuk tells this to Ji-sook, saying that it seems like Min-woo has found out about her. Ji-sook says she was going to tell him anyway, so it’s okay.

Min-woo visits Ji-sook’s supposed final resting place and sees the diamond necklace that Seok-hoon left there, remembering seeing it on Eun-ha the day she died. He takes it to Seok-hoon, asking what was going on between him and Byun Ji-sook. When Seok-hoon refuses to answer, Min-woo says he’ll find out himself, and expose it all.

Stepmom isn’t happy that Min-woo is about to be handed everything, and her own daughter Mi-yeon overlooked. She accuses Papa Choi of favoring him because of his mother, which has him roaring at her and storming from the room. Ji-sook overhears and asks him about it, and he confirms that Min-woo will be announced as the next successor at the charity event.

It’s not good news to Ji-sook at all, since she’d read in Eun-ha’s diary that as soon as Min-woo becomes the SJ Group’s successor, he’ll die. But she had also gone on to write that she wished to stop Seok-hoon from becoming a murderer. Ji-sook had added her own entry to the diary, “I must stop Min-woo from being murdered.” We even see the two women writing their different priorities in the same book, as Ji-sook imagines herself with Eun-ha.

She confronts Seok-hoon that night to remind him that she won’t allow his plans to succeed, and when Seok-hoon breezes that everyone dies some time, Ji-sook challenges him — they can die together, then. She’s as determined to stop him as he is to carry out his plan.

On her way back to her room, Ji-sook collides with a maid carrying a tray of glasses, and falls and cuts her hand. Chang-soo comes running and she begs him to say where Min-woo is, and he’s no match for her pitiful face.

She goes to Min-woo's hotel room and he reluctantly lets her in, and she launches right into what she’s been trying to tell him about her identity. He stops her, saying he doesn’t want to hear it because he doesn’t trust her, and he’s clearly drunk. Ji-sook warns that he could die if he doesn’t listen, but she falters for a moment when Min-woo says to get out of his life.

She forges on, and tells him her real name: Byun Ji-sook. Hearing the truth from her own mouth infuriates Min-woo, and he accuses her of doing all this for money, which she doesn’t deny. He has no idea how hard it is to live without money, and she'd wanted to try it, though she knows she was wrong. But she says everything she did with him was her decision and her choice, and asks him to come home.

He does, but before he even sees her, Chang-soo intercepts him for a meeting with Seok-hoon and his father. They tell him about the announcement that will be made at the charity event, but Min-woo doesn’t understand why this is happening all of a sudden. Papa Choi just says that, though he’s spent more time with the company than his children, his children mean more to him.

Ji-sook is waiting when Min-woo gets back to their room, and she tells him to turn down his father’s appointment. She can’t explain why, she just knows he’ll be in danger if he accepts. Min-woo says that he almost forgot the reason he went through with their marriage — to gain more power in the house, and to take over the company.

He starts to call her “Eun-ha” but stops himself, and says softly that he has a hard time being in the same room with her. He leaves, and Ji-sook lets him go. After he leaves she sadly remembers his changing their marriage agreement rules, including that they sleep in the same bed now.

Min-woo talks to the security manager, who tells him that Young-tae, who worked pool security, quit just after Eun-ha’s accident. He confirms that Mi-yeon looked into him, too, and finds out that the man is still in the hospital. Though he’d been better, his condition mysteriously got worse, and he’s now in Intensive Care. Min-woo catches a glimpse of Scar in the hall and follows him to a stairwell and downstairs, but he loses him in the lobby.

Ji-sook visits the lawyer to start the divorce as soon as possible, but the documents aren’t ready and she has to wait. She wonders what Eun-ha would do, and goes to the apartment to look through Eun-ha’s secret box.

She finds a tablet with a video on it, with Eun-ha telling her father proudly about her first art show. There’s a sadder video from the anniversary of her mother’s death, and one where she found a painting she did of her family as a child. What’s really sad is that these videos seem to be the main way Eun-ha communicated with her father.

Ji-sook goes to see Eun-ha’s father to tell him she plans to get a divorce, that even though Min-woo is a good husband, she just doesn’t like him. He asks her not to do it until after the presidential election, and she agrees but asks him for a favor, which we don’t hear.

In his office, Min-woo hears Ji-sook’s voice call his name, even though he’s alone. He calls Chang-soo to find out what she’s doing right now, who she’s with and whether she’s happy. But before he finds her, Min-woo calls Chang-soo back to the office, then immediately tells him to find her again, then cancels the whole thing to go see her himself. Poor confused guy (and poor Min-woo, too, HA).

Ji-sook is at her coffee shop, where business is going well due to the new menu items she’s introduced. Min-woo watches from outside and grumps that she’s smiling too much, then when her face falls once she’s alone he complains that she’ll chase off customers.

He goes to a restaurant they’ve been to together for lunch, but he’s got no appetite and leaves just before Ji-sook enters and sits at the same table. He walks and remembers their first meeting, when she’d been drunk in the street and he’d thought she was Eun-ha, and he'd taken her to the hotel to sober up. Remembering his freakout when she’d vomited on him, he smiles now.

Soon it’s the evening of the charity event, and Ji-sook is called to deliver the opening speech. She keeps it short and sweet, but Min-woo still can’t look at her, even when it’s announced that they’ll be performing a duet together.

Director Shim and his lackey sneak in backstage, and come upon a man suspiciously fiddling with the lighting controls and calling Seok-hoon to give him the signal when it’s time.

Ji-sook and Min-woo begin their duet, and they play well together though the mood is chilly. Both of them seem to be thinking of the time when Min-woo showed Ji-sook how to play the violin, and they’d been happy. Ji-sook particularly seems on the verge of tears.

Papa Choi gets up to make his big speech, and announce his plans for SJ Group. But just before he appoints Min-woo as his successor, Ji-sook comes in with Eun-ha’s father and asks Choi for a private word. This must be about the favor that Ji-sook asked from him.

He asks if this is really a good time to be giving the company to Min-woo, just before the presidential election, since Seo’s ratings could go down if Min-woo’s psychiatric problems come out in the press. He says that he’s even considered making his daughter get a divorce if Min-woo is appointed successor.

Papa Choi resumes his speech, and Eun-ha’s father gives Ji-sook a small nod — he’s done as she requested. We see that she’d given him Eun-ha’s box of secrets and promised to explain later, and he’d found the videos and the painting Eun-ha did of her family.

Papa Choi goes back to the podium to resume his speech and announces that, until Min-woo proves himself capable, he will not be handing over SJ Group to him. Min-woo immediately asks Ji-sook if this is her doing, and she admits that she had to do it.

She goes to the podium to add something to what Choi said, and announces that she’ll be donating fifty percent of her SJ Group shares to start a new charity foundation. The money will go towards helping people continue their education, and common people who just need a little help.

The room erupts in applause, but suddenly the lights above Ji-sook start to spark. Seok-hoon looks surprised — this isn’t part of his plan, and even the guy who was tampering with the lights looks shocked. The lights explode and fall, and Min-woo jumps up and runs to the stage, grabbing Ji-sook and whipping her out of harm’s way as the lights crash down.

COMMENTS

I loved this episode, mostly for what it didn’t do — we didn’t get served the typical “You lied to me, I hate you forever!” flailing and knashing of teeth by the betrayed. I’m not even surprised that I’m surprised by how well Min-woo is taking the realization that his wife is not who he thought he was… by which I mean that, by now I’ve come to expect Mask to rise above the histrionics we normally see in a borderline-makjang drama. It’s nice to be able to expect the unexpected, and not be let down. I knew he wouldn’t pitch a fit or cause a huge scene with her, though it’s expected that he feel hurt and betrayed. It actually speaks volumes for how much he cares about Ji-sook, and doesn’t really want her to get out of his life as he said. He could easily have told his family about Ji-sook’s deception and had her kicked out, yet he’s keeping her secret for now.

That, along with his mutterings to himself that she must have had a reason, show that he wants to find a way to work things out with her. I’m glad he was pushed out of his denial, though I do still wish that Ji-sook could have told him herself, because I believe that Min-woo really already knew that this woman he married wasn’t Eun-ha. It was time, if their relationship is to withstand this, for him to stop fooling himself. I think that the fact that he really already knew something was very strange with her is what’s helping him process this without all the anger he could have shown, because he really partly has himself to blame for the fact that he didn’t already know the truth. He can’t blame it entirely on her. Hopefully this standoff between them won’t last long now that Ji-sook is proving she’s still on his side and acting with his best interests at heart (and giving away half her shares will help convince him that she may have come for the money, but that’s not why she stayed), and they’ll finally become the team we’ve all been hoping to see.

I like that we’re finally getting to know the real Eun-ha, and at first I was a bit grumpy that we didn’t get to see this vulnerable, gentler side of Eun-ha sooner. But then I realized that it’s actually better that we didn’t get these glimpses sooner in the show. Until now, Eun-ha has seemed to be this distant, shadowy figure, who we only saw as superficially angry and confrontational with Min-woo. It’s been easy not to sympathize with her, because she fit nicely into the little box we wanted her in as the cheating and possibly murderously scheming bitch to Ji-sook’s loving and thoughtful wife. But now that we’re seeing more of her, I’m finding myself feeling more empathetic towards her than I ever expected to — she seems like a sad, lonely woman, who latched onto Seok-hoon as the first man who showed her love. Even when he asked her to help him with his revenge and commit murder, she loved him because he was there, showing her love.

But it’s becoming clearer the more we get to know her, that she wasn’t planning to go along with Seok-hoon’s scheme. She even wrote that she wanted to find a way to stop him from killing Min-woo… though it seems that she wasn’t so much interested in saving Min-woo from Seok-hoon, as saving Seok-hoon from himself. She even wrote in her diary that her goal was to keep Seok-hoon from becoming a murderer. I could see the Eun-ha that we’re learning about now, playing along with his plan, with her own plan to try to use that year to talk him out of going down a path he couldn’t ever come back from. She probably would have tried to convince him to give up his revenge, and just divorce their spouses and go be happy together. Possibly I’m being a bit more optimistic than Eun-ha deserves, but I’ve never seen any indication that she wanted or intended to kill Min-woo.

Of course with Mi-yeon fast on Seok-hoon’s heels in terms of revenge-seeking, or just plain destroying lives because if she can’t have one then nobody can, we may not even have to worry about Seok-hoon much longer. Mi-yeon seems much scarier at this point, since she’s really got nothing to lose, and that makes her a dangerous loose cannon. And it seems as though, no matter what Seok-hoon is planning, Mi-yeon manages to stay one step ahead of him. So at this point, I’m not even so worried about Seok-hoon — Ji-sook can handle him. It’s Mi-yeon that Ji-sook and Minwoo should be most worried about.

@ klava

I second that!

@ Hachiko
MASK has turned me into a kdrama-addict. It's the only drama I am watching right now, I don't know how many times I've watched each episode (from raw/nonsub, subbed then repeating selected clips) and reading the comments to get through to the following week.

I give MASK two thumbs up! Love the casts!

Enjoy :)

Same here...
For each episode, I watch the live streaming (though lagging), then subs, then repeat watching, then watch selected clips from Youtube..
Practically makes me an addict..

@Hachiko
It's my current kdrama obsession, I rarely do, but when I do I can talk about this drama endlessly...
It's great.. Have great casts with great acting..

Yes!!! You need to see it! Its a definate must see. Im really enjoying it. It is also the only drama I'll wake up in the morning wanting to see just bc its here. I don't care abt subs when im obssessed with a show. Subs don't deter me any more. And tbh u notice much more w/o subs distracting u sometimes. Plus ur ears get more accustomed to the language.

in summary, I ttly encourage u to see Mask. I doubt that u'll regret it. And it is binge-worthy.

One of the best offerings currently airing, and imp - the leads have convincing chemistry! (Even cheesy lines don't irritate but instead provide humour ... that's how good it is - you get invested, the characters draw you in).

The villian is very interesting as well.

I'm enjoying it, but you have to like a little bit of makjang-style histrionics, and a stomach for the doormat heroine in the first half of the show. This is a show that I'd never have enjoyed when I first started getting into kdrama, and even now, some of the histrionics make me laugh. In this ep, for example, the male lead hears the big secret and then literally staggers around as though drunk. It's not remotely believable, and I laughed.

Still, overall, really fun to watch, and some unexpected qualities that you wouldn't generally expect of a more average makjang.

@mwg:
The makjang is NOT really the typical OTT drama makjang though - bec that bit was keeping me away too. I didn't want histrionics. But this one is refreshing - it's spiced with humor as well. Acting + Script = captivating. Even the villain is entertaining.

@jusash ur right.

The makjang is usually a turn off genre for me. Can't bother with the tragedy, cliché tropes and mostly the tears. But what turned me off from this drama was the poster with the main characters on it. It didn't really tell me much n it was boring, whereas High Society has a pretty good poster. But u knw what they say, can't judge a book by its covers!

This drama is really a unique makjang. I can dismiss the craziest idiosyncrasies. AND the show finds the time to blend in humour, romance and mystery, instead of staying dark all the time. So if u love romcoms i think u'll enjoy this drama. Initially, i thought the humour was misplaced but nw it works to lighten the plot.

Honestly, its called drama because its supposed to be an overdramatized story. As long as its done with reasonable amount, you cant complaining about makjang drama. Thats why i never expect some realistic plot when watching one... You can only enjoy the fun when you expect nothing

Le shit hit the fan, lol. You're right everything was well executed, I kept expecting it to ho full makjang and angst for 4 episodes which is the standard but he went from shock, anger and missing her all in one episode. Love love mask.
I've been watching A thousand day promise this week and I'd like to say all those that were saying Su Ae can't act need to watch this.it's a sad gut wrenching drama that had me crying alot, I'm still traumatised. I find myself spacing out ever since just thinking about the drama.I was basically in a funk but yesterdays episode of Mask turned things around I won't spoil for those that haven't but it was enough to get me out of the funk.
Also aside from Ji Chang wook, Su Ae is the first actress I've thought has a gorgeous smile, it's something that gives me pause everytime.
I'll miss this show, don't want it to end.
Thanks for the recap and great insight.

The only other thing that I have ever seen her in is A Thousand Days Promise. But yes she can act. It is the quiet, dignified, subtle kind of acting; but it is definitly different than being a wall. This drama is perfect for her.

I have watched Su Ae since her Love Letter (Jo Hyun-jae and I think Ji Jin-hee) and April Kiss (Lee Jung-jin, and LOL Jo Han-sun who was her high school baddie in Mask who got killed) days ... but it wasn't until Nine Ends Two Outs (Lee Jung Jin) that I liked her.

There's no doubt that Min Woo still loves JS even after finding out about her identity because he got to know her (at a personal level) since the wedding day.

A little break between the luvbirds to sort out their feelings goes a long way especially for Min Woo.

Seok Hoon needs to stop digging a grave for himself.

I'm always frustrated with k dramas characters and their inability to just TALK.
Ji Sook could have explained to MW why he couldn't accept the job, he's already aware of the fact that SH is shady as fuck. The whole "I'll tell you later" "Just do as I say" think is overdone
I'm just ready for MY to bomb the family house and be done with it

Your right. Everyone is always telling him to just trust them and do what they say. I think that is why MW made his decision in ep 16 against his sister's wishes...He was just really fed up with everything.

Trying nt to spoil ep 16 but it is so hard. I just want to talk abt it.

Agree w Yuknosuna word for word.

It's ridiculous to keep saying "I'll tell you later", "Just trust me" when she and he both know that she is not even who she says she is. It's not like she has a good track record of honesty.

I was like you too, until I stopped trying to find some logic in KDrama :). Also, I was thinking it may be hard for JS to tell MW the whole story, because it may also she needs to spill the evil agreement she has with SH, which may look very dirty on her part too! Just my two cents. I may be too overprotective to JS , because for some reason I could understand why she chose to be silent instead of telling the whole story, at least until she is really sure that her relationship with MW is stable and strong enough to withstand the after affects.

Then she would have to tell him all about Eun-ha's plans with SH. If Min-wo finds out all about SK and EH he would be more in danger than he's now. The only thing she can do at the moment, is prevent him from getting the shares until she gets the divorce.

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!

Yesss! I'm so glad that MW is trying his best to process everything and knows that JS still means a great deal to him as shown in that final rescue scene. And I'm sure he can tell how much he means to JS since she is so persistent in convincing him go not accept the transfer of shares. Even though he was trying to think back to when the switch occurred, he knows that JS has always been honest with him about everything else. And I loved that MW actually wanted to give JS the benefit of the doubt for the loan shark murder and even confirmed with her friends to hear what she was like. Totally LOLed at him sending CS to check on her and then kept changing his mind. XD

MY is definitely more dangerous than SH now. JS keeps stepping up to thwart his plans that it makes me wonder what tricks he still has in his bag... MY, on the other hand, doesn't care what it will cost her now and is capable of doing anything.

Thanks very much LollyPip!

It looks like Mi Yeon has replaced Seok Hoon as the 'villain' to watch. How 'funny awesome' that unlike Seok Hoon (who has become ridiculously ineffectual and cowed by a small-time loan shark), Mi Yeon gets 60% in the 6:4 ratio plus 2 guys working for her against her husband.

Question that is conspicuous for not being asked:
Papa Choi should have asked Mi Yeon: Did you really kill Eun Ha? I have the vid to prove it. If Eun Ha is dead, who is that woman masquerading as her? Did you plan this?

Other Questions:
Shim to Seok Hoon: Why are you wasting so many people's time to bury me up to my chest before you offer me a billion Won? You know I' probably do have the goods on you and my death will be yours, so just give me the money already!!!

My question to Seok Hoon: What the heck are you talking about that the world will be a better place once Min Woo is dead? Who made Min Woo the king of the world that his death has any impact? What makes you think Ji Sook is going to let you get your hands on MW's assets when she has been turning tables on you in the past few episodes?

My question to the director on JS's collision with the maids: Why break those glasses and create such a mess? It was just so JS could ask CS that one question, right? Couldn't Ji Sook just have called Chang Soo for a chat? They were practically 'buddies' sharing food after all!

I don't think Papa Choi knows that EunHa is dead. He probably thinks that his daughter attempted murder, which if exposed to the public would be just as damaging. He warned Mi Yeon to stop bullying/bothering EunHa/JiSook (or is that in the next episode?)

Imo the JS's reaction to getting hurt was a representation of hw much she cared for MW. Even when hurt like that, she thought of her husband first. You also see her forgetfulness for herself at the end if the ep where she asks MW if he was okay. Its clear that she wud sacrifice herself for MW.

So yes, I think that scene was necessary in showing JS character. I believe that was all the scene was for.

Interesting thought this... it does make sense in the consistency of Ji Sook's character.

I felt however at certain times, that the scenes were sort of sewn in short and patchy just to cover certain plot points. This was one of those scenes. :)

What I loved about this episode...

Min Woo stops just sitting there and having things done to him, like a dolt, and gets up to find out, very thoroughly, who Ji Sook is for himself. And how he misses her *sigh*

The Target was the title for this episode...
How apt it is that for spoilt MY and vengeful-entitled-deluded SH, their past time is target practice where they aim at making holes in the lives of others (and blame others for whatever) instead of looking into what's wrong with themselves.

All their conversations of suspicions and lies/admission of lies tie them together in destruction instead of uniting them in revealing/discovering the truth which should have been their target.

By contrast, JS and MW go for reflective walks and meals during which they have personal truthful conversations. When they do have lies/unspoken truths and admission of the same between them, it draws them into greater tolerance/acceptance of each other and a desire to understand the lie and to know the truth. A side lesson in good couple relationship LOL!

Ji Sook's target ...

JS was like a dead fish when SH victimized her but started becoming the scorpion to SH's frog once his target was to hurt others/family. Even when going to see MW in the hotel, her fear was that the room service was bringing in a knife to either kill MW or because MW might want to hurt himself with it (that was my 1st thought)... so her focus was MW's welfare and not herself. She wanted after all to tell him that she loved him again if he accepted her.... rather than to hear him say he loved her. Extreme selflessness! :D

By comparison (again) SH, MY and even MW seem to have thought only about themselves. Well MW is not all that bad, if he can love JS for herself and not for what she does for him, or if he can care for the less fortunate not only because it makes good business sense. :)

That's a great point.

Even when they were falling down when she was about to be killed by that massive light fixture collapsing on her head, her first thought was for Min-woo and not for herself. His incredulous expression when she asked 'Are you OK?' was priceless! He must have thought, 'here she is about to be killed, and she's worrying about my welfare?! '

@Gb yessssss! I also loved hw MW finally started digging tho SH had clearly messed with the cop at the station, I suspect.

I like what u said abt the juxtaposition of the two couples. Imagine, MY married SH thinking that it was for love. But SH was always playing a part. And he lied to her so unashamedly.

On the contrary, while JS married MW with clear intensions for a business merger, coupled with the whole false identity issue, it is JS who is true to MW. So herein lies the whole idea of a Mask.

The way things turned out between both couples is kinda ironic too. The one suppsedly meant for love is the one that is crashing and burning. Yet the other initially based on business has flourished so beautifully.

I thought for a second Papa Choi called MY to question her about killing EH.. But he didn't do that, he only warned MY to not mess up with EH/JS.
And then what?? Does he still believe eventhough EH is drowned and in coma, she comes back alive and well afterall?

It's so funny that everytime MY or SH does something bad according to their plan, it never worked out the way they want. SH wouldn't predict JS would step into the podium and MW save her at the last minute right?

Seems like Seokhoon is on his own, what to do? Will he take JiSook with him and die together like JiSook suggested? What does he mean by create Heaven. What is Heaven to him?

Everyone don't like loan shark Shim. But I'm the odd one like him. He's a break from all the melo in the drama, his dressing is uniquely stand out, unforgettable.

@Adal

Idk, i feel like the 'accident' was meant for MW but JS went up there instead and it fell. Perhaps that's why SH stood up shocked? It wasn't meant for JS at all. I mean, MY later had the guy beaten up for what he did so it couldn't be her. Im going to have to rewatch all of that scene and come back.

Okay, i rewatched it. Based on SH and the tampering guy's reaction, seems the lighting wasn't supposed to fall at that moment. Plus we only see MY's reaction after the lighting fell on MY. So either she didn't knw abt it or had the goons mess with it to fall on JS and faked her surprise. Chances are it was simply meant for MW and fell on the wrong person. Afterall, the lighting was initially for when MW made his acceptance speech.

I thought so too. Maybe there's an error in the translation, but as far as HE knows, Seo Eun Ha is still alive. However, it still doesn't look good that his daughter witnessed her sister-in-law stumbling drunk into the pool and drowning without doing anything to help her. With the press expecting perfection from the chaebol family, they could tear her to shreds if the tape ever became public.

Who wud stand to gain the most from this move? And hw did they even get this video that no one but ppl in the house knw of? He didn't have to go along with the plan. He cud've fought harder. But I guess his children's safety clouded his judgment...? Idk.

In the game of chess, if Min-woo is King (two steps only, dignified but ineffectual), Ji-sook shi is definitely his queen, doing all she can and pulling out all the stops to save him, keep him from harm or even death (checkmate). And like the King in the game of chess, Min-woo is ineffectual. He knows who his opponent is, where the attacks come from, but all he does is issue warnings and mild mannered threats but no action. It's no wonder Seok-hoon doesn’t take him seriously.

Ji-sook on the other hand, threatens, begs, reasons with, warns, researches, plans and effectively carries out those plans, stopping the enemy in his tracks. I applaud her. I am in awe of her. I admire her immensely. It's no wonder I am in love with this show.

I've got to give this drama points for subverting tropes on its head. Min-woo is the unsuspecting damsel in distress and Ji-sook is the knight gallant rescuing said damsel. It's cleverly done. Of course they rescue each other, worry about each other, show love and care for one another. But I have to give this drama props for its portrayal of strong, feminine women. Ji-sook, Mi Yeon, and Eun ha are all strong women. None of them are wilting violets. It is true the have their flaws, but they are decisive women, when they see something wrong they take action and face the challenges head on. They have interests, even careers and they are talented (although Mi Yeon's talent is shooting guns)but they are all truly interesting characters in their own right.

This ep was sooooo good! I didn't knw it was going to be so awesome to watch. The feels were there. The makjang was turned up and our otp tho shaken, show that they still very much care for eachother. I was enjoying this ep so much that I couldn't wait for ep 16, honestly! I was half way through the ep and I was in so much anticipation for the nxt ep.

On another note I really felt for JS when MW's trust was shaken. I hoped rather naively that MW wouldn't feel too betrayed. But his reaction is understandable. I just really wished and expected MW to go to JS as soon as possible so he cud hear what she had to say. But he just tried to block her out. Perhaps it was a defense mechanism. He was in denial initially. But when JS told him the words from her own mouth despite his coldness, I was so proud of her. That's character development for you!

Usually shows fizzle out toward the end but Mask still manages to keep us interested.Im so looking forward to the future eps :) ;)

About miyeon's behaviour.. Her reactions are starting to make more sense to me. Maybe I'm thinking this through the filter of episode 16 (don't worry, no spoilers) but even without that; as early as episode 14 in fact, I keep getting the feeling that she isn't being destructive but rather sensible and smart (a little reckless and scary but still smart).
I know we hoped that once she found out ji sook was not the woman her husband was cheating on her with she would team up with ji sook. But let's face it, from what she knows now the truth is far worse. Ji sook is now the woman her husband hired to help him destroy her brother (and she does seem to genuinely care about mim woo). She doesn't know ji sook like we do, and ji sook hasn't proven herself to mi yeon the way she has to min woo. She doesn't know ji sook's back story or what drives her actions. She has no reason to trust her and every reason to suspect her. So she is right, from her perspective, to want to split them up and get min woo away from ji sook and her influence.
Also what the hell is seok hoon's problem with min woo. I know we've been given the impression that he is doing all this for revenge for his father. In which case min woo would have been too young to have done anything. And now he knows for a fact that min woo didn't kill eun ha either. Why target min woo and not his father? Even when we didn't know the details of seok hoon's plan, the way he went after min woo; what with all the gas lighting and drugging and murder plans, seemed excessive. And now "the world would be a better place without him?" Wtf! Plus the way he behaves it's like getting the money and the company are all excuses to kill min woo. I mean there are a lot of ways to get what he wants he's already married into the family for god's sake. But the one aspect of his plan he refuses to change is min woo's death. It's like given a chance to choice between killing min woo and getting them money he would choose the former. And I'm wondering why?

0

Required fields are marked *

you know what, i think Minwoo and Seok Hoon have the same mother.

I think Minwoo's mother left her first husband and son to get married to some Chaebol (or was pressured into it more likely) and died while saving Minwoo from drowning. Maybe Seok Hoon's father also got injured trying to save them because we never got to see who actually fished MW out of the water, only his mother pushing him up.

In that case, his hate would be "understandable" after all in SH 's eyes MW is the boy that stole his mother away and got all the benefits while he was deemed "not good enough". Killing MW is killing 2 birds in one stone, getting vengeance on MW's dad by taking his precious son and heir and killing his half brother who stole his mother away. It might just be the K version of Cain and Abel.

And i do agree about Miyeon, i think she is starting to realise that JS really does care about her brother but is still battling her animosity against her since she looks so much like Eun ha.

Also both fathers (papa Choi and the president canditdate) both do seem to care about their children in their own way, mostely because of the connection to the mothers (president dad look genuinly touched seeing his wife's face on that painting).

Interesting theory....so many possibelities

0

Required fields are marked *

@cocobeans

But the thing is that MW's mother never married Papa Choi. Its clear that she was a mistress i.e a kept woman as EH put it 15 eps ago in ep 1. So even if she did leave someone to pursue a chaebol. she nvr married the guy. Based on SH dad's response abt forgiveness, i suspect that there's more regarding the story abt MW's mom. Maybe SH's dad played a major part in the whole saga.

On the contrary, i simply believe that SH just wants MW out of the way bc he wants control of the company. He needs to find a way to get rid of MW in a way that seems legit. Even if he has some power as the husband of MY, she isn't the heiress for the company - MW is. I don't think he hates MW. MW is just a means to an end. That's why whether he dies or lives while being declared insane, it doesn't matter. Its either one or the other. Whichever way will remove him from his position as heir.

Plus, the reason he wants the company has been explained to us. His father was mistreated by the company. And that left SH's father (clearly his only parent) basically dependent for the rest of his life. All this while SH was a little boy. From the flashbacks he has a lot of hate for papa Choi for putting his father in that state.

0

Required fields are marked *

True. She's so complicated. You really can't talk abt these characters in a couple sentences.

I feel like MY really doesn't want to hurt her brother but SH pushes her so far. That's a really bad relationship if i ever saw one. Since she can't communicate w him like regular ppl she has to find ways to get the truth she needs. I doubted that she really cares for MW but it seems she does care for him. I think that for her, she feels that if she exposes JS she'll bring down whatever schemes her husband has cooked. And its nt that she hasn't thought abt the fact that killing EH wouldn't come out. Rather, she did attempt to keep her involvement hidden.

@han "Could it be he wants the Choi family to have no Heirs?"
I dunno.. Remember in the beginning he encouraged Ji Sook to seduce her husband. I mean even with precautions accidents do happen. And he would not ask her to do something that might be directly counteractive to his plans right? And he's shown no indication that he is against his own wife conceiving. He doesn't seem for it but he doesn't seem against it either, in so far as I can see he doesn't seem to care about it at all.

Also I can't explain it, but to me, his grudge seems Min Woo specific.
That "the world would be a better place without him" sentence is making me very very suspicious. Maybe its splitting hairs but that just sounds like a statement made by someone with a personal grudge not a generic grudge.
Like not as in "must kill the Choi family heir", or "must kill the person standing between me and all that money". But "I want to kill Choi Min Woo".
