Suzy up to headline tvN’s Cheese in the Trap

Huh, so Cheese in the Trap, the highly anticipated webtoon-adapted drama starring Park Hae-jin (Dr. Stranger, You From Another Star), is considering adding Suzy (Gu Family Book) in the leading lady role. Everyone, buckle up for a bumpy ride on the media play train — already reaction is vocal and loud and pretty conflicted.

According to Suzy’s representation at JYP Entertainment, she received the offer for the lead role of Hong-seol and is considering the drama. The production company confirmed sending Suzy the script, but added that “there was no further discussion.” No decisions have been made on either side.

The character is described as an ordinary and thoughtful college student with an occasional tough side. Park Hae-jin signed on to the project early on, and plays the heroine’s sunbae and later boyfriend. He’s the perfect type of guy, boasting good looks, background, education, and style, though he’s also got a mysterious streak and a “dark inner side” behind his kindly face. From what I’ve read of the webtoon, it’s not a dark or shady story so I don’t suppose that he’s quite as sinister as that wording suggests, though maybe webtoon-readers can fill us in on the details.

Already I’m seeing a ton of fan reactions to the casting, with some excited over Suzy’s casting (she IS pretty much the It Girl of her generation, in terms of popularity and starpower) amidst a pretty sizable wave of discontent. It kind of reminds me of the uproar when Yoon-ah was almost cast in Cantabile Tomorrow, which was so negative that everyone quickly backtracked. Like Nodame Cantabile, Cheese in the Trap has a fervent and protective fanbase, and it seems that more people feel Suzy’s not a good image fit than the opposite.

And while I do really like Suzy on a personal level (in that she seems sweet and I have general warm feelings about her as a person), let’s just say her acting ability is perhaps the least of her charms. She can work in cutely funny roles that poke fun at herself, as in Dream High (where they made a whole plot point out of her inability to emote) or even Big, but I always find myself frustrated that she doesn’t connect emotionally with her characters or make me feel for them. I want a heroine who makes me care!

We’ll have to see which way the production team takes this fan response as they continue the casting process. The drama, directed by Coffee Prince and Heart to Heart PD Lee Yoon-jung, will air as a Monday-Tuesday drama on tvN later this year.

It's the common media play. I doubt Suzy will follow through.

I don't read Cheese in Trap (I have this slight aversion to webtoon and romance manhwa in general). So whoever chosen as female lead, do your best!! and writer, please make it interesting. From what I read, this webtoon is slice of life--they need some spice for TV

Over-rated as to what?

Don't think there is anyone who think she is overrated when it comes to acting.

PLEASE NO TO SUZY! Cheese in the trap is a really good webtoon and i don't think i want to see her act in this webtoon. Though i agree about Park hae jin being casted as the male lead, so yeah...just change the female cast. :(

I think that's a rather uneven comparison. The thing about Orange Marmalade though... The character of Ma-Ri doesn't exactly call for a whole lot of emoting. She has like maybe two facial expressions in the webtoon.

In Cheese, the story is told largely through Sul's thoughts. How she feels and reacts propels the plot. When I try to imagine Suzy acting out Sul's wariness, frustration, anxiety, fury etc... I can't. Sul's character is the best part for many fans of Cheese, including me. Cheese in the Trap wouldn't be Cheese in the Trap without her. I don't want a half-hearted, watered-down, cutesy version of Sul. I want my heroine.

Also, I feel like not enough people are concerned enough about the age difference between Suzy and PHJ. HE'S MORE THAN A DECADE OLDER THAN HER OMG.

Lol no. I'm going to pretend I didn'the see this.

About Yoo-Jung though... There are definitely some tense moments where I genuinely think he is a psychopath. Author is great at deliciously murderous expressions. But I keep changing my mind about that. The more I read, the more conflicted I am. But (KIND OF SPOILERS SPOILERS DON'T READ AHHH) I'm all caught up with the raws and for a while, I've been settled on "can be scary but mostly misunderstood and not his fault and really it's kind of just about perspective". Plus he's just too cute with Sul.

I'm looking hard for the Cheese in the trap webtoons just to get the idea why many of the viewers oppose of Suzy being Sul. After reading a few chapters, I kind of agree that Sul character somewhat full of emotions and characters, I'm afraid Suzy can't portray Sul's character with flying colors.

This sure is a casting disaster. The character from the manhwa and Suzy DOESN'T MATCH AT ALL!!!! And also I believe she won't be able to bring out the Seol's character.....Haejin and Suzy does not really match as well

my choices:
chun woo hee, kyung soo jin, park bo young, or kim seul gi

and last time i saw someone said there was a running gag in the webtoon about the height differences and sul being a shortie. the 4 girls above are SHORT. suzy is big boned and quite tall imo like prob around 5'6~5'8 range... so based on that, she shouldn't even have been considered in the 1st place

I've been a fan of Cheese in the Trap for a few years now. When I first heard about Suzy as Hong Sul I felt really weird about it, but the idea is growing on me. I don't think she's going to be that bad in this. And yeah, the male lead is quite a bit older, but they don't really look drastically different in age. Suzy is like 21, he's like 33. People in their 20's and 30's don't really look a whole lot different in real life.

Suzy looks more like Hong Sul to me than a lot of other celebrities that fans were throwing around. She's not overly girly, and even though she's a bit younger than Sul is supposed to be, I think she could easily pass for a 24-25.

Last of all, everyone gets all freaked out when they decide to cast an idol actor in an adaptation or a series that people like (anyone remember the protest over Go Ara in R1994?) and a lot of them end up surprising you. Yoon Eun Hye got a lot of shit when they cast her in Princess Hours and she knocked it out of the park. I may be the only one, but I have a good feeling about Suzy.
