News bites: August 9, 2015

Seo Kang-joon, Kim Ki-bang, Kim Hee-chan

  • Cheese in the Trap just keeps adding to its cast. Kim Ki-bang is a gay civil service exam student and good friend to the lead. This will be the actor’s fourth collaboration with director Lee Yoon-jung (they worked together on Heart to Heart, 4teen and Golden Time). Kim Hee-chan is landing all the good little bro roles; he played Gong Hyo-jin’s sibling in The Producers and is cast as Kim Go-eun’s cute, funny and aegyo-filled younger brother. And now Seo Kang-joon (Hwajeong) is considering the role of an injured ex-pianist who looks after the heroine, though no confirmations yet. [YTN, Sports Chosun, Chosun]
  • I’m excited for Yoon Hyun-min (Falling for Innocence), who’s landed his first leading role in MBC’s upcoming weekend drama, My Daughter Geum Sa-weol. His character is a second-generation chaebol and the director of a construction company. Given that he’s been catered to his whole life, he’s notoriously bossy and has a “bulldozer” personality. In the past he’s only been involved with women professionally, but he’s strangely attracted to Geum Sa-weol, played by Baek Jin-hee (Pride and Prejudice). Park Se-young (Feel-Good Day) is positively considering the opportunity to play Sa-weol’s rival, and I hope this means her agency dispute has been resolved. From the writing and directing team who worked on Jang Bo-ri Is Here, the weekender is about a family torn apart by hate and revenge. It focuses on titular Sa-weol, who attempts to mend the family’s broken ties by building a new dream house (I’m not sure I get the logic, either). The show follows Queen’s Flower on September 5. [Joy News, Korea Daily]

  • Baek Jin-hee, Yoon Hyun-min, Park Se-young

  • Filming’s begun on Missing: Missing Child, formerly titled Mama, and everyone’s eager to see the first collaboration between Eom Ji-won (Thrice-Married Woman) and Gong Hyo-jin (The Producers). Eom plays a single mother who is career-oriented, but when she learns her daughter and the nanny are gone without a trace, she’ll start a desperate search effort. Gong plays the nanny — I love the departure she’s taken from her usual lovable roles — but it seems the first shoots were no picnic. Gong said, “The beginning shots involved wearing winter clothes in this incredible summer heat so it was challenging, but after reviewing the cuts, I think it will be a good movie and I have high hopes.” Missing will continue to film for another three months and is targeting a release next year. [SBS fun E]
  • Kim Hyun-joo (What’s With This Family) may be headed to Hollywood, though her reps stated that she hasn’t received any offers and has only received a few “letters of intent.” Rumors have swirled that she’s been asked to play the daughter of famous Korean activist Dosan (Ahn Chang-ho) in a Hollywood film, but for now, her agency would only emphasize that she’s busy filming SBS’s upcoming drama I Have a Lover, which premieres August 22. [Joy News 24]
  • Im Ji-yeon (High Society) is finalizing negotiations to play the female lead in Key of Life, which I take to mean that Jo Yoon-hee is out? The Japanese movie remake tells the story of a bit actor and a gangster who swap lives, and Lee Joon and Yoo Hae-jin have already been cast in those roles, respectively. Filming begins in the latter half of the year. [Star News]

  • Kim Hyun-joo, Im Ji-yeon

  • Someone’s been busy: She was cast in the film Because We Love, and it’s just been announced that Seo Hyun-jin (Let’s Eat 2) will be returning to the stage (she began her career performing in The Sound of Music) and putting on glass slippers for the title role in Cinderella, a musical which debuted on Broadway in 2013 and is now set to raise its curtains before Korean audiences. The show has also cast a number of singers to act alongside the musical actors: Alternating as Cinderella with Seo Hyun-jin and musical actress Ahn Shi-ha are Younha and Baek Ah-yeon, while Eom Ki-joon will play the prince, as will Sandeul (of B1A4), Ken (VIXX), and Yang Yoseob (Beast). Cinderella runs from September 12 to November 8 at Chungmu Art Hall. [XSports News]
  • Speaking of Let’s Eat 2, it’s gotten a variety spinoff of its own, called Let’s Eat With Friends, in which Yoon Doo-joon and Seo Hyun-jin reprise their roles and head off with a combination of Let’s Eat 2 castmates and real-life friends on a weeklong European eatfest. Park Joon-hwa PD said, “While we were filming Let’s Eat 2, we became close friends and started talking about how nice it would be if we could go on a trip together, and that’s how Let’s Eat With Friends began.” The meokbang variety show aired its first episode on August 5 and will continue on Wednesdays on tvN. yay, Let's Eat more! (literally)

As for the Cheese in the Trap casting, Seo Kang-joon is certainly charming and has decent chemistry with his costars, as seen in What's With This Family, but I hope to god his acting is up to scratch for this.

I'm glad to see Baek Jin-hee return to the small screen too, she's an actress who can really make lemonade out of even the most insipid lemons - and with Yoon Hyun-min, no less! I like this pairing already, just hope it's less makjang-y than MBC's usual weekend drama pattern.

and YAYYYYYY my queen Gong Hyo-jin returns to movies! I love that she isn't afraid of taking potentially unsympathetic roles, and the movie sounds interesting already. Though my first choice for a Gong Hyo-jin movie would always be a reunion of her+So Ji-sub, though this seems like a far more complex storyline. (please be good!)

Yoon Hyun Min and Baek Jin Hee sound like a cute pair.
Seo Kang Joon and Baek In Ho? I never even considered, it'd be quite a turn for him, he is usually the sweet type from what I've seen. Oh, but I didn't see Suspicious Housekeeper...he is in that? I don't know what his character was like there.

Yoon Hyun-min as main lead? Yay! But weekend family drama...I do like Baek Jin-hee too though...

And Seo Kang-joon as an ex-pianist? Please don't let "pianist" be the new career in Korean dramas (The Time I Loved You viewers, you know why!)

worse yet, the pianist is the control-freak/villainous/jealous second lead as seen in TTWNIL & Five Fingers (JCW as 2nd lead piano guy)

in the manhwa he is the 2nd male lead yes, but its still not fully known. He's not that bad... poor oh hana. He's not nearly that bad... just has a lovely temper because of his injury he lost what he loved and just gets mad... I'm too excited for this drama....

Well, the character is an ex-pianist in the webtoon the show is based on so...it's not like they can just change it, lol.

Very interested to see how they treat Kim Ki Bang's role. Dramas have had their hits and misses with their few gay/not-gay-after-all characters, but if the source material is solid and creators brave, it could be great. At least we're seeing more and more lately. I hope we can see more ladies too, given there is a clear imbalance there. Go, cable!

The source material is solid and quite respectful-his relationship is treated seriously and like any other, with its own set of conflicts and complexities (with the additional difficulties of societal prejudice and homophobia). So as long as they stick to the original and don't try to water it down, it should be fine *crosses fingers*

Ooh, thanks for the information. I hope they do. I hope so much. When there is source material there, especially beloved source material, there is pressure for adaptations to be worthy. I hope they will not mess with this part either. I shall join you in crossing my fingers and all other crossable parts.

I might be the only one who doesn't want the news(seens as confirmed some news) Seo Kang Jun playing as InHo,he doesn't look the character at all(not as looks nor as vibe what is meant to be),he is a decent actor but to me he is cute and flower boy,not to mention how could i take him serious in his relationship with the lead when Park Hae Jin will more than sure crush him with his stare also being like a highschool kid besides him,it needs a actor to be on par with Park Hae Jin because InHo is wild and has quite a temper(lashing out and stuff) all SKJ isin't and the most intretsing thing about is that his arc revolves the hero not being the usual second lead being nice in the shodows for the heroine(the best one yet who looked like InHo was Woo Bin in Heirs, that is the close as InHo)..I'm glad they mentained the gay thing as in the original, curious who teh other character will be,that hates the hero a lot(also him being friends is a bit too much, even when he is scared a bit of him)our hero doesn't really have friends

There's no way Kim Woo-bin would take a second lead role on cable, realistically speaking - I mean, he was offered a major drama by MBC just months ago (and fortunately passed on it but you get me).

Some people mentioned Lee Min-ki as a wishful fancasting but he's in the army and again, hit leading man status long ago. Though I would have loved to see him with Kim Go-eun again after Monster (seriously they had chemistry through the roof in their scenes together even if they were trying to kill each other).

Park Hae-jin is a fantastic actor and is likely to pair beautifully with KGE, but I'm worried that he'll crush everyone else in acting terms, a bit like Rain did in that idol drama last year.

I know Kim Woo Bin will most likely would not accept at this moment but i was saying as how InHo looked as most closely, not just as looks but as character to make a better picture of how he should look like, and Kim Woo Bin char. in Heirs was the closest to the one that should be portraited, aka to have the same vibe and feel the temper etc. not a flower boy type something InHo isin't...That's why i said they need to cast someone to be on par or at least close as Park Hae Jin,because InHo character arc is with the hero, that's what makes it so rich and amazing, not some Batman doing good deeds for the heroine and just that and making all about the old boring love triangle...i don't think it's impossible to find someone who has the InHo vibes even more with more rookies actors out there,I don't have anything with Seo Kang Joon,i like him but,his acting is decent but like said i see him as a cute flowerboy, not as a tormented, full of rage, quick temper lashing, maybe sometimes not really classy(thug maybe)guy that this character should make me see/feel it while watching it(also not mentioning young besides the hero)

Yeah Lee Min-ki would be my fantasy casting for In-ho, though I know it's impossible. Seo Kang-joon just doesn't have the gruffy bad-boy aura.

I think Seo Kang-joon can do bad boy, but I'm not sure if he can do In-ho justice. I hope I'm wrong.

and it's a shame about Lee Min-ki, but I hope that to make up for this, we get him reuniting with Kim Go-eun in another movie after he's done with his military service. (and please let it be a romance this time!)

Yeah, same. In ho is a special type, lol. If he accepts we'll just have to see I guess.

Lee Min-Ki is my fanciest for Inho too. I mean Byung from Shut Up Flower Boys was basically In-ho (just add some arse hole and violence and take out some of the awdorkable).

I don't know the original work or character and I have only seen Seo in 'Cunning Single Lady', but if I go by that, I don't really care to see him in any leading or second leading role.

But hopefully he can be inspired to do well in this one, if cast.

He was quite good in What Happens to my Family. There were so many veteran actors on that show, I think he and Park Hyun-Shik (they were playing former childhood best friends turned rivals) both got some acting lessons on the side from their castmates.

You are not the only one. I hope the drama gods for once answer my prayers and the deal fall through. Boy is pretty but lawds he cannot act. I am reading the webtoon now and at first I didn't get all the fuss netizens were making about casting, but the further I got into the story (and the more addictive it became) I get it.

CiTT is very character driven and if you don't have good actors to play the roles (and lawds tell me there is a good writer, who is writing it?) the whole thing will tank since the story its self is very slice of life nothing much happens even though stuff happens. Seo Kang Joo just doesn't have the acting caliber to playoff Park Hae Jin/Kim Go Eun (see how he is failing in Hwang) or do the role of BIH (just my humble opinion).

Also InHo and Jung are supposed to be the same age and if you have a bunch of late to early 30 year olds playing 25 year olds, they look hella old but i'll go with it. When you mix it up, the age difference becomes too glaring to overlook and takes me out of the scene/story. Please stick with casting all late 20s early 30s (yes KGE is 24 but Sul is supposed to be younger than Jung any ways).

oh you are not alone my friend! I like KSJ, but his look is just not mean enough to play In Ho. In Ho is one of the most interesting character in the story. I really hope KSJ will decline, and the casting team will give us more suitable candidate. Well if KSJ do accept this role. Let's just hope he will throw away his flower boy image and be the In Ho we all know!

Just watched ep 1 of Let's Eat with Friends..and it looks fun although Seo Hyun-jin seems like the type of traveler buddy that would rub me the wrong way..idk if it is just the way they are portraying her or if it is just that I didn't have subs..or maybe there is some leftover annoyance at her last character on Let's Eat 2...aha. anyway. My fave person is her friend Park Hee-von, she just seems pretty chill and well i loved her in Fated to Love You and Masters Sun. :))

No way... Seo Kang-joon as In-ho? I hope this is mere speculation because I can't see that. His acting thus far, even after Hwajeong, cannot match the complexities and gritty character that is Baek In-ho.

I know how hard it is to cast someone for Inho especially when ppl keep fancasting names such as Kim Woo Bin or Lee Min ki - both of which are impossible - instead of putting forward some plausible names. And I myself can't think of any possibilities. So I guess it's safer for the production company to cast someone with a sizeable fan base despite his lacking acting skill instead of some unknown with solid skills.

this web comic was so bad I couldn't even finish the first chapters. The entire thing was mostly inner dialogue. I'm not sure how or why this show has such a large fan base, but I'm personally glad many stars that have been previously offered these roles have passed on them. They're better off with much better production offers than this.

I was like you. I gave the webtoon a try and didn't get the hype around it. However I found myself going back to it and wanting to read more and more. Try it again and try to get past the first few chapters. The whole story picks ups a lot and all the characters are very interesting and not at all what they seem or don't seem.

I'm super excited to see Uhm Ji-Won and Gong Hyo-Jin on the silver screen together. I would definitely like to see more actresses headline films in South Korea.

I'm glad Cheese is moving along with the casting, though I'm skeptical about Seo Kang-Joon as Baek In-Ho. He's kind of the delicate sparkly type. I can't really see him being threatening or crude. But whatever. I'm satisfied with two thirds of the casting for the main characters so that's pretty good. I think. I want to see who they cast as Baek In-Ha!!!!!

For the love of all things holy drama gods do not let Seo Kang Joo accept this role. The boy is pretty but...his acting....leaves a lot, too much to be desired. He was okay in What's Up with this Family (but that's because his character had like 5 minute of screen time per ep) but everything else has been a huge pile of nope.

His role in Suspicious House keeper is too small to judge much (green but pretty in that) I couldn't stand him in Sly and Single Again, and he is the weakest link, just so bad in Hwang. I used to think he had potential but after Housekeeper his shine has been going down for me. I really don't think he has the chops to portray Inho well or hold his own beside Park Hae Jin or Kim Go Eun. I hope he doesn't take it but if he does *prays drama gods bless him with acting skills*

Since becoming addicted to the webtoon, I'm really looking forward to CiTT but trying not to get too hyped since most webtoon or adaptions in general sans Misaeng have been fails (still bitter about Nodame). Please let the production have gotten a good writer(s) since the PD and most of the cast are solid. Also please let them do the Ahjussi neighbor and AP Hun's relationship the juste it deserves and the webtoon gives it. I swear it they water it down or make it something comedic or the like, I will rage,

The casting rumors of Seo Kang Joon seem to create quite a stir among the web community... I won't join the witch hunt and will rather give the guy another chance. Who knows, he might surprise us in the end and make us want to swallow our words.
I just saw him in "Cunning Single Lady" (he was okay I guess, Lee Min Jung is not Oscar winning actress either so...) and in "What happens in my family", he has a small role there but he managed to play his part well. I have no complaint whatsoever, really, sure he's not the best actor out there but he's not awful either to the point it would ruin my drama experience *coughJin Se Yeon, Yunhocough*
