Marrying the Mafia drama adaptation Sweet Family lines up cast

Jung Jun-ho, Moon Jung-hee, Jung Woong-in

There hasn’t been much movement on the drama adaptation of the comedy film franchise Marrying the Mafia since it was first announced as a possiblity, but now it has a new title and a confirmed timeslot, and is back to casting. The drama previously known as The Man With Two Faces is now called Sweet Family, and will be MBC’s Wednesday-Thursday drama this November.

Headlining will be Jung Jun-ho (Mama), who starred in the original movie in 2002. In the film, he played an elite businessman who ends up having to marry into a mob family because he spends the night with a mob boss’s daughter. There are five installments of the franchise in total over ten years, with various spin-off mob families and assorted hijinks.

The drama version will have a slightly different take, focusing on a dad who’s already a mob boss, having to juggle his double life as the dependable head of a household and the scary boss of a crime organization. Jung Jun-ho will star as the man who wears two faces — the kind and loving father at home, and the badass mofo whose gang runs the town — who will discover that a life of crime isn’t what he wants. He’ll attempt to wash his hands of the mob, and work hard to become a husband and father that his family wouldn’t be ashamed of.

Moon Jung-hee, who incidentally played Jung Jun-ho’s wife in their last drama Mama, has been cast to play his wife. She’ll have a ragey mother-in-law to contend with, as well as a troublemaker teen to raise. And playing Jung Jun-ho’s main rival is Jung Woong-in (Yong-pal), whose character is the head of the construction company within their mob organization. I guess that means he’ll be vying for control, and being a general scarypants. Though it’s a comedy, so he might be an ineffectual rival, which would be awesome.

Directing is PD Kang Dae-sun of I Do, I Do, Gold Rainbow, and My Princess, and writing is Sohn Geun-joo, who penned the fifth movie of the series, Return of the Mafia/Marrying the Mafia 5, as well as the daily drama What Is a Mom.

Sweet Family will follow She Was Pretty on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning in November.

This is awesome since the two male leads are best friends/have known each other forever. I hope the directing allows for their chemistry to shine through and we get some awesome man-child bumbling bromance!

I like the idea but I'm not gonna lie, I would've gone about the whole thing differently. Like given the project to Yuna's Street writer and cast Park Sung Woong or Kim Sung kyun as the mobster for starters.

I'll still check this out though.

MBC's next drama batch seems targeting older generation.
Mon-Tue: Dazzling Temptation (and I assume it has lots of makjang)
Wed-Thu: Sweet Family (older pairings by kdrama standard)

It doesn't mean the younger gen can't enjoy, but I think they target different age group because hey, isn't the one behind remote control is ahjumma anyway?

It could be a trend. American Horror Story series uses a lot of older actors mixed with new ones and it worked well for them.

Thes two Last Scandal brothers are always together. I looooove Jung Jun-ho and Jung Woong-in. Ahhhh, Song Jae-bin ♥

Know what? Last Scandal remains to be one of the most repeatable dramas in the world. Repeating it is not a task. I love it.

I am so happy for Jung brotherhood, who are always together. I will def watch out for this drama.
