IU, Ji-soo, Kim Sung-kyun for Bu Bu Jing Xin remake Moon Lovers

We finally have a possible leading lady for Moon Lovers, the Korean drama remake of Chinese time-slip fusion sageuk Bu Bu Jing Xin. IU (The Producers) is currently entertaining an offer to headline opposite Lee Jun-ki (Scholar Who Walks the Night), in what would be her first historical drama. The singer-actress has been involved in some controversy over her latest album this past year, but I’ve always liked her in dramas and think she’d make a good time-traveling heroine who steals princes’ hearts.

The original drama is about a contemporary heroine who time-travels to the Qing dynasty and gets embroiled in a royal battle between princes. The remake will take place in early Goryeo in the time of its fourth king, Gwangjong. Both Lee Jun-ki and IU are considering the leading roles and are unconfirmed for now. Meanwhile, there are lots of other princes to be cast — nine in all — and most recently, fresh-faced heartbreaker Ji-soo (Sassy Go Go) has signed on to join the pack. Also confirmed is Kim Sung-kyun (Answer Me 1988), who will play a government official.

So far, we have on our royal roster: Lee Jun-ki, Kang Haneul (Misaeng), Hong Jong-hyun (Mama), Nam Joo-hyuk (Who Are You—School 2015), EXO idol Baekhyun, and now Ji-soo. I certainly hope that at least one or two of them get other love interests, because that’s a lot of boys for one girl, even if that’s kind of the point.

This will be Kim Sung-kyun’s first non-cable television role; he’ll play a high-ranking bureaucrat, which will likely be closer to his darker movie roles than his goofball Answer Me characters. He’s good no matter the genre, though, and has done period films in the past. Ji-soo has been cast to play the 14th son of Taejo, a prince who grew up very differently from his older brothers, and received nothing but love and affection. The character is said to be a sharp contrast from his previous roles as rebel teenagers (who break my heaaaaaart) — his prince is the cute maknae who’s playful and well-liked, and will have everyone’s love.

The remake, helmed by PD Kim Kyu-tae (It’s Okay, it’s Love) and writer Jo Yoon-young (Cinderella Man), is currently being considered for a September 2016 broadcast on SBS. That’s not confirmed, but production will begin in January and the project will be fully pre-produced before its run.

Also I was hoping they would add Yeon Jeong-Hun to the cast. He would have been perfect as the 4th Prince or the prince that is in love with Ruoxi's sister. I don't have anything against Lee Jun-ki i loved him in two weeks but at the moment I truly can't see him as the 4th prince.

I believe the 8th prince was the one who was in love with Maertai Ruo Lan, (Ruoxi's sister) and with Ruoxi later.

Come on guys give IU a chance, we all saw how the Hyeri bashing turned out. And I actually think she has the charisma to pull this off.

I'm so happy Ji Soo is playing the 14th prince aka my fav character!!! God is real!!!

[Spoiler(?) if you haven't watched the Chinese version] Idk if this adaptation will differ much from the ori but all I rmb was the 14th prince was an angsty puppy who didn't get the girl in the end so it's actually not very different from Ji Soo's past works? Haha.

SO strange to remember when Kim Sung Kyun was not known as a nice guy & a comedic figure but of a perpetual villain...what a chance Reply has made in his life.

i've never liked IU, but i really started disliking her after her god-awful performance in producers. i was NOT expecting her to be so downright bad. i hope she turns this down. it's curious how she seems to be doing all right even in the wake of her album scandal—which i can't really comment on either way, since i don't know anything about the book or the song. still, curious.

i guess i'm most looking forward to finally seeing this ji-soo kid in something. i couldn't make it through angry mom (too much violence) and didn't pick up sassy go go, but i've been hearing so much about this kid.

Dunno why my comment was cut when I was posting it. Okay, let me continue a bit..

So, GF says both IU and JS are unconfirmed yet. Well, I love JS since I've watched sassy go go, but IU, hm.. dunno, I only like her in dream high. I have watched her other dramas, but it didn't really good to me. ( This is purely my opinion, no offense at all)

agreed that LJK is the oldest among the prince, but age doesn't really matter as long as they can bring the chemistry out well. And as oyjer sYs his previous saeguk are noy really well-received by the viewers. I think Arang and the magistrate is the best so far. The rest are dissapointing, even I like the casts there, but they couldnt save me from boring and turned off. So, the only thing I hope for this, they will get a well-written script.

I have give up saeguk long time ago since nothing is able to catch my interest anymore. But chines historucal drama has been uprising nowadays. Nirvana in Fire definetly one of the most quality drama ever made! And Moon lovers and Bu Jing Xin is so pale in comparison when I have watched BJXX and Nirvana In Fire!

Sounds like a pretty good cast is coming together, particularly if Lee Jun-Ki signs on. Very interested to see how they'll retell the story. ;)

since I watch the original drama ... I really feel that Korean v will fail.

I'm not sure how they cast the males or females .. but I'm good with LJK & (maybe Haneul too) but I need to see how they'll look on the drama

don't take it in a wrong way ... this drama is not about love, it's more Power struggle ( who will get to the throne?? ) and love is part of it.

the males should be manly, strong and smarts from the first look, ( it's more than casting handsome guys ) until now LJK the only one who can give this feeling

and I don't think IU should be the lead ( I don't hate her ) but this role is not for her ... yes the female should look at 20's while males at their 30's& 40's,
but the important thing is to feel her chemistry with everyone & how she's smart (has a queen personality)

untill now this looks more like scholar night season2 but I hope I'm wrong

The apparent lack of female characters aside from IU worries me. But Lee Jun-Ki... And Ji-Soo... And well, I like IU well enough. I think she could be good in this. Just please... If there is only one significant female character in this drama... I will be mad.

They are not done with the casting yet. Obviously the older princes should be married and have a couple concubines.

I have never watched the original but I love the story from Everything ockoala has ever talked about. I just have a lot of reservations toward this adaptation because I'm not sure how well it will translate to Korean history wth the allotted number of episodes. Also I like most of the cast but I'm not sure any of them have the charisma to match LJK. I hope they cast someone on equal footing for the second male lead. Also I would've liked to see LJK back in a present dY drama for a change.

Hmm don't you guys think the reason why ljk is continously casted in historical drama ,is because no one is better than him in it. Since its a big budget drama and again universal studio invested in it, it has to have a very good cast and in acting xperience . Ljk and kang ha neul are d main actors ,other actors in it will who knws prove their acting skill and as for IU been d female is also a chance for her to prove her acting skills , we shld trust d PD since so far he has made really good work , I mean he is excellent.

Why not IU?! She sure can act as a 17 year old willful headstrong Roxi. For all its star veteran actors, I only remember Producers because of her. If anything, LJK is a real miscast here. The 4th prince is supposed to be cool and reserved. According to the original script, his life depends on hiding his emotions while scheming to get what he wants. LJK is known for his overacting and always stealing the spotlight from his leading ladies. That won't work in a drama that is build around the strong female heroine. It spells another TSWWTN disaster. Unless you get Shin Minah as Roxy and she puts him in his place.

The real problem is that some of the female characters are written as weak, boring or bland characters in the dramas. Blame the script writer, can't help it if LJK is so charismatic that he attracts "eyeballs" when he is on the screen.

Maybe the situation with LJK is exactly the same as IU in Producers, where you can only remember Producers because of her because she was more outstanding than the others.

Anyway, he was great with SMA in Arang, JHB in Joseon Gunman and KSE in the beginning part of SWWTN.

I think both you and @Marina are right....the heroines of Joseon Gunman and SWWTN (especially the latter) were very badly written, and Lee Yubi in particular is not to blame for that.

LJK isn't to blame for the poor writing, but over the last couple of years he does seem to pick dramas with an eye to how they show off his skills. Which tends to lead to him picking dramas where the heroine has next to no real character development....which makes for a poorer drama overall.

Mind you, I don't blame him for this - checking his own role first is natural for an actor. But choosing dramas this way does lead to missing the bigger picture, because as you said, he does better opposite actresses like Shin Mina (who are big enough stars to not be reduced to damsel-in-distress roles). Sometimes it makes for a better drama when he doesn't have to carry it all on his own with an underdeveloped female lead character, and that is something I think he doesn't realise.

So I just finished watching the original and I really hope the k version doesn't butcher it. I hope the remake explores all the relationships the heroine develops throughout her the drama. It was the only reason why I stuck around for the C Drama. I loved the interactions she had with all the people around her.

While there were a lot of characters, none of them felt unnecessary and they all had an integral part in the show. They were all so human and realistic. I really hope the remake doesn't make the mistake of just focusing on the main love triangle like I've seen done so many times. In the original, the main love triangle never interested me. I was more interested in her relationships with the other princes, the king, her servants and her sister.

With so many casting and characters, I really hope they flesh out each character like the C drama.
