Jung Il-woo, Ahn Jae-hyun courted for teen drama

Well this is a relief. I was beginning to worry that Jung Il-woo (Records of a Night Watchman) would keep doing projects abroad and be absent from dramaland for far too long, and that just won’t do. He might be returning in a new teen drama called You’re the First along with Ahn Jae-hyun, who coincidentally headlined the vampire medical drama Blood when Jung Il-woo turned it down. They’re both a little too old to be playing high-schoolers, really, but some of my favorite Jung Il-woo dramas are the ones set in high school, so I can’t exactly argue that it’s a bad thing.

The new series is being produced by HB Entertainment (You From Another Star, Yong-pal), and is based on a 2-part novella called Cinderella and Four Knights by Baek-myo, about a girl who comes to live in a house with four boys. The writer also happened to write the source material that inspired Flower Boy Ramyun Shop called Sweet Bakery, which is also about a girl who comes to live with four boys. She just really likes her reverse harems, apparently.

This one is about a spirited teenage girl who’s smart and nice and good at sports, who hates her home life due to her new stepmother and stepsister (so the Cinderella thing is literal then). She dreams of escaping her home where she’s treated as an outsider, and one day she helps out an old man and he extends an unusual offer to her.

She’s invited to come live in a giant mansion and attend a prestigious high school (is this Boys Over Flowers?), where she gets to pursue her dream of becoming a veterinarian. There are four other inhabitants in this house — three beautiful brothers and one bodyguard — who are stubborn and free to do as they please. She opens their frigid hearts and they become their own little family, and find love along the way.

It sounds adorable, and I can’t wait to see who else they woo for the drama. Jung Il-woo and Ahn Jae-hyun are considering for now, we’ve got two more flower boys and a lucky Cinderella left to cast. Please pick a good heroine, please.

You’re the First is being shopped at the networks and is hoping to air in 2016.

for the IU scandal, Beyond Hallyu and Asian Junkie are better resources. It's basically a witch hunt.

0

ohh IU's scandal is pretty disgusting. glamorizing paedophilia (and profiting off of it!!) is NOT ok.

han groo's scandal, on the other hand, i can't take seriously. i don't have step siblings, but if i did and someone asked me if i had siblings i would count them. if she had said she didn't have any siblings, her step-sister and brother would probably still come out of the woodwork and create a scandal about her refusing to acknowledge them. maybe i'm missing the core issue in that situation but it seems pretty silly.

0

@masked - I agree, I think accusing IU of glamorising paedophilia is REALLY rich coming from a country whose pop stars routinely dress in infantilised concepts to appeal to older men.

And from what I've seen, all of this started because the Korean publishing company took IU's words in an interview out of context and took it upon themselves to behave as if they actually wrote the book.

Some of the allegations I've seen are truly absurd, considering the lyrics of the controversial song appear to have been taken directly from the book. And western pop music has PLENTY of far more controversial songs (see: anything by Serge Gainsbourg, especially songs written for France Gall and his own daughter, Charlotte. Or even Alizee's 2000 hit, Moi Lolita)

0

I googled about han groo just now. She is soon getting married to her non-celebrity boyfriend. This is the only latest news about her.
But why is she hated for that? Is there any other reason for hate?

IU was dating someone much older than her. But again, this can't be the reason for hate?

Their dating is the similarity here but it really is non-sense to hate them for that. That is their personal life.

Required fields are marked *

for IU, I think it's not about her dating life. It's about her recent album's controversy.

http://www.kfmradios.com/en/2015/11/controversy-rises-over-ius-lolita-concept/

http://www.koreaboo.com/trending/netizens-continue-case-ius-lolita-concept/

for Han-groo ... idk, why?

0

I thought she already got married. She had a recent scandal about her family background (ala Cindy). The short story of the scandal is that Han Groo has step siblings who graduated from prestigious universities like Seoul National and she made it look like they were close because it looked good on her resumé but in reality they were estranged.

0

IU got backlash for sampling Britney Spear's song without permission and for having a song and album cover that sexualizes a 5 year old.

0

IU was involved in a plagiarizing scandal, and then she wrote a sexual song about zeze a fictional child from a story book. her songs are doing well I think but the Netizens hate her

The so-called "sexual song" has lyrics that quote the book itself.

And she wasn't even the composer of the plagiarised song!

It's pretty much the dorama I watched (but instead of 4, it was 7(?) And even she is the same ages as the boys, she is her mother bc boys' father made her as his wife and asked her to take care of his children)

And lol, theyre basically being the rich kids again, (i was hoping to see ahn jaehyun has poorer role, bc him in hoodie is like one of the most adorable thing) pls no lee min ho or kim woobin, i would be freaking confused who to focus on.. maybe they can cast actors whos not sooooo popular but act great.

My personal vote for female lead of this thing, would go to Chae Soo-bin - she's slayed every one of her drama roles so far no matter how small, and her profile could do with the boost that comes from playing the female lead of a prime time Big 3 drama.

But Jung Il-woo has been making some godawful drama choices over the last couple of years so I am not reassured about the quality of this one.

I've only ever seen the poor guy in You Who Came From Another Star, where he played the brother...and that I barely remember. I'm not watching Blood, ever, even though the girl from Boys Before Flowers is in it (I forgot her too; honestly, with Lee Min Ho shining in the centre with his flower boys, would I really have time to remember her name? Haha), as I've seen a lot of stills from it/pictures of scenes, and I swear he has a range of expressions like a teaspoon. (HARRY POTTER FANS, ANYONE?)

Jung Il Woo does best in high school dramas, but I'm wondering whether it's all he'll ever be doing the best at. I admit he was pretty a-okay in Moon that Embraces the Sun, and Flower Boy Ramyun Shop's cheery atmosphere is because of him (for me, although the rest of the guys are way too cute!); but please??? Another drama like this, and by the time you're 60, you'll have nothing left. I'd like to see more 49 Days-ish. I haven't even watched that drama yet, but I know he's good in it, because his acting skill is pretty varied if he allows it to be. I just don't think another high school drama is the answer...

Let the heroine be less weak-spined and more head-strong and just, please, choose a nice heroine who's sassy and sweet and not like Go Mi-Nam at all. (Unpopular opinion, sorry! I like Go Mi-Nam, don't take it the wrong way; I just want a change of character. Like I Hear Your Voice's lead heroine? Now THAT'S sass).

As much as I love Jung Il woo, I'll be the first to admit that his acting range is limited, so I do hope he brings something more to the table. I feel like I've watched his repetoire of tricks in his last few dramas. Here's hoping he goes for the non-traditional role of bodyguard. He's much too old to play bored, rich, chaebol high school son unless he's imitating his best friend, Lee Min ho. I'd like to see him in something resembling his angel role in 49 days. He wasn't the main lead but he added a lot of spice to the show.

Yeah the older I get, the more these plots sound embarrassing and cringeworthy to me, I can't watch them anymore. But I can't judge because teenage me had Hana Yori Dango and Hanakimi (older me probably won't like them as much if I rewatched them now), sometimes teenagers just want something mindless and fun to watch with no stress. Just let them have it.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's probably just me, but that sounds like a godawfully boring and generic premise. And they're courting an equally godawful actor in AJH. Meh.

Also, I've never understood the praises JIW gets from DB people in general. I think he's extremely limited with one set of facial expressions. I got so tired of it forever ago and his drama choices have sucked whale-size since I-don't-even-remember-when. This drama sounds like the type I'd skip in a heartbeat so I hope they cast an actress I wouldn't care for.

nope, it's not just you - this sounds trite, unoriginal and boring. And while I quite liked Jung Il-woo years ago, he's been choosing crappy dramas for ages now. Kinda like the male Yoon Eun-hye. Now knowing he's choosing a drama is practically a guarantee I'll avoid it.

As for the actress, I hope they pick someone who's good at acting and could use the exposure of being a Big 3 lead....Kim Seul-gi is way too good for this, but someone like Chae Soo-bin or Yoon So-hee might get more of an actual benefit out of this.

@Mandy

I agree with you with regards to JIW limitations. I like him a lot, but I'll be the first to admit that he is very limited to one set of facial expressions. It also doesn't help when he seems to stick to these flower boy roles and only branches out occasionally to choose other genres. I think the mark of a good actor is someone who mixes up his genres a lot and constantly challenges themselves, instead of sticking to just the easy roles.

I think he'll do better with something dark and heavy - maybe even a thriller, then his limitations won't show as much.

I really hate it when these actors have been playing adult roles for several dramas...then they throw them back to 18yrs old again! When they did that with Lee Min Ho in Heirs it made me gag.

Hmm, I don't think JIW's a bad actor. He's consistently picked crap for ages though and so his acting hasn't really gotten any better. I do think his acting comes across as a bit manufactured sometimes? Idk, sometimes he really looks like he's going through the motions, though it could be down to the dire scripts he's been working with. He should switch agencies asap.

AJH is absolutely hopeless though. He's beyond limited, I don't think he can do anything remotely close to acting.

In the right hands this sort of premise could be cute?? We'll see. I agree with pogo, Chae Soo Bin would be good for this.

This sounds like a teenage girl's fantasy (haha, mine) that could be sloppy and just pure cringe-y crack, but if put in the right director/PD/writer/actors, this could turn out to be a sweet fluff with some deep moments, and complete with a cute "family", which I'm always down for.

But it needs better leads: AJH? REaaaLLyyY? Why him? Why not peruse through the multitudes of flower boys out there who can actually act...well, good? Jung Il-Woo I have no problem with, except for the fact that he's not recently been choosing good dramas, and this might be either a huge comeback or a shameful, crack drama hidden in the folds of K-Dramaland's storage rooms.

There are so many fresh-faced actors/flower boys, so can we reconsider the options? AJH I would swap for Ji-Soo in a heartbeat. I swear, that boy just gets me. Right in the freaking feels.

Heroine options, people? Mine would be someone bubbly with enough sass to fend off 4 boys, maybe Park Bo-young or Lee Yu-Bi. Definitely not someone too young, please, because Jung Il-Woo. Nuff said.
