Im Shi-wan out of Entourage, Seo Kang-joon probably in

Aw, bummer — Im Shi-wan (Misaeng) won’t be taking the tvN remake of Entourage after all, choosing to focus on his other projects instead (he’s currently filming the movie One Line). So far, I only see one outlet reporting that Seo Kang-joon (Cheese in the Trap) has confirmed the drama, which always makes me hesitant to accept it as the final word — when something’s confirmed, the news will be everywhere, so I consider that a preliminary report. But it’s safe to say either way that Seo is still in the mix.

It’s too bad since Im Shi-wan would have been a great choice to play the lead; he would have been the everyman-like manager (Eric in the original), who was seen as the vapid star’s sidekick by the entertainment industry but often provided the actual emotional center of the show. (Insofar as Entourage had emotions at all, beneath all the glitz and flash.) Eric often seemed like the voice of reason in a whirlwind of crazy, and Im Shi-wan would have been perfect (if too pretty for a guy who’s not the actual pretty-boy movie star).

I like Seo Kang-joon a whole lot more ever since Cheese in the Trap but haven’t quite changed my mind about his limits as an actor, so I find this role fitting for his strengths: He’d be perfect as the star actor, inasmuch as Vince had a lot of charisma for someone so empty-headed. His ambitions of grandeur of becoming a Serious Artist were hard to take seriously, and therefore hilarious. Meanwhile, Jo Jin-woong (Signal) and Lee Kwang-soo (It’s Okay, It’s Love) are reportedly in finalization stages to play, respectively, the CEO of a major management company (the Ari character) and the star’s cousin with dreams of acting beyond small bit parts (Johnny Drama).

I’m a little ambivalent on Entourage as a whole because I never quite loved the original, but did find it often very entertaining. I never warmed to the characters, whom I found annoying at best and repulsive at worst, but actually have hopes that the Korean version might be able to flesh them out more. I could easily see a remake being a fun, self-referential hit, though they’d really have to keep the risque, bawdy humor to be Entourage. Really, I do think the Im Shi-wan role will make or break it, so I’ll be curious to see who they end up casting.

Entourage plans to air in the summer, following Memory.

Omg then then can we have Lee Jehoon taking up for that role? I know that Signal's not ovet yet, but would love to see him and Jo Jinwoong in a drama together again (perhaps in the same timeline this time!)!!!

I second Jehoon as the Korean version of Eric in Entourage! He was also the first person that came to mind when I found out that Shi-wan turned down the role.

I'd always thought Seo kang-joon was mediocre at best, and wooden at worst, but after seeing him in Cheese in the Trap I was pretty surprised. Its hard to hold your own when you're working side by side with more experienced actors, yet you never really feel like he's at a disadvantage. He plays the character well and with a lot of emotion, so I'm cautiously optimistic about him being cast in this role.

Watching Seo Kang Joon in Cheese in the Trap, I can see how much he's grown as as an actor after What Happens to my Family. Also if you compare his actual self in Roommates to how he is in Cheese, he is definitely inhabiting a role with a personality so different from his own.

How can Seo Kang-Joon be at a disadvantage on Cheese in the Trap when he's been given all the lead scenes that were Park Hae Jin (Jung)? I never want to see Seo Kang Joon in another drama ever! The way Park Hae Jin was treated on the set to make way for Seo Kang Joon is disgraceful. They threw away 90% of all his scenes and gave them to Seo Kang Joon who was okay to me, but he wasn't all that.

TVN can give him this role, but it will be a very lukewarm reception after what has happen to Park Hae Jin---it was just wrong on all levels.

I guess this is why they're killing us with SKJ on cheese because they want to promote this drama. I just saw that all of PHJ scenes were cut and they're selling it separately on the cheese website (that's hella shady) and also there are rumors that PHJ was not invited to the cast's celebratory vacation. I wonder who PHJ really pissed off behind the scenes.
Anyway, I don't see how this entourage will translate well into Korean. I'll wait till it ends to get opinions then I'll probably watch it.

I'd be pissed if I were Park Hae Jin. Cause he was cast first, billed first as the first lead and now his screentime is cut and they don't even invite me to their vacation. WTF.

But how is that SKJ fault is what I don't understand. I've seen so many hateful comments here on this particular website's CITT forum as well as others forums directed to the actor personally.

I guess I don't understand how it is his responsibility how much screen time he is alotted each episode. Why people are hating on him versus the character or the situation itself?

What hateful comments? People criticising excessive Baek In-ho screen time ≠ hate against the actor personally, unless you're incapable of telling the difference.

0

Because the only one benefiting from this is SKJ.

0

His agency, Fantagio, is a powerful one. There was a rumor like this too during Cunning single lady, that his agency sponsored him to get more screentime than necessary. Too bad for him because it's really apparent in CITT. The boy has done no wrong, but the greedy folks behind him damaged everything including his fame. I bet no other actors
would star with him again in the future (unless they're from the same agency, maybe)

0

Netizen comments mean nothing to me. If true then it sucks but I've been hearing this for a while with no actual proof or articles to back it up, just speculation.

What? Park HaeJin was not invited to the casts' reward-vacation? What kind of bullshit is this? Is it really really for real?

What is his (PHJ) agency's name since they're doing such a terrible job? I heard that he wasn't invited to the drama awards circuit back during the My Daughter SeoYeong era even though that drama did super well. What is going on?

And allegations of tvN pushing Seo KangJoon in Cheese just so to promote this drama is not a good look for them. I doubt this theory but if it were true, the tvN management better get their hands off drama making or they'll become seen the same as public stations when the difference between them is precisely the reason people are rooting (and therefore paying) for tvN.

Apparently this rumour mill was about PHJ! ):

Hallyu star C is currently starring in a popular drama and is regarded as the figure responsible for the high viewer ratings. Unfortunately, despite his lead role status and importance to the drama, he's said to be receiving subpar treatment from those around him. Despite it all, he remained nice towards them until it finally became too much for him when he wasn't invited to any year-end event, causing him to break out in tears. His company had to step in for him to get him a few invites and onto nomination lists as a supporting actor. His pride had already been too hurt at this point so he asked to be removed. C had actually received invites from 20 other Chinese award ceremonies but had declined them all for his domestic schedules and to keep his loyalty to the broadcast officials he thought he could trust. Unfortunately, the year-end did not turn out how he expected.

I think Seo Kang Joon is outshining Park Hae Jin in Cheese he's doing the wounded puppy really effectively. I don't understand how Park Hae Jin suddenly became a top star. Before You who came from the stars where he also played the typical 2nd lead and became popular he was pretty much unknown right??? I have also seen him in Bad guys and I thought he was the weakest link in that drama kind of doing the emotionless wooden thing. But I kinda understand that people are upset over his reduced screen time.

lol 'wounded puppy' is typical description of EVERY FREAKING KDRAMA MALE LEAD EVER, Seo Kang Joon is not doing anything that viewers have not seen 1000 times before played by other actors. Kim Go Eun and Park Hae Jin are a thousand times better actors even with what

And Park Hae Jin was "unknown" before YFAS and Bad Guys? Are u really new to kdramas or do you not know that he was in East of Eden which was a massive hit? He has been known and popular right from debut ever since Famous Princesses. And he is also popular in China because he has worked there even before it was trendy.

the reason Cheese in the Trap was sold for a cable record price to China was because Park Hae Jin was the lead, and here you want to big up that limited-skills pretty boy who is ur bias so u claim PHJ is some random who only got famous in the last two years? AS IF.

0

@pigsnout
For some reason I couldn't reply directly after your comment so I'm replying here instead.

You are wrong I am not Seo Kang Joons bias, before Cheese I only recall him from Cunning single lady and his acting didn't make an impression on me and I also didn't get his popularity.

What I disagree with is that there is a huge gulf in acting ability between Seo Kang Joon and Park Hae Jin in Cheese in the Trap and Park Hae Jin is in a different league.

As for Park Hae Jin I liked him in My daughter Seo young. I didn't realize he was regarded as a top actor since I don't think he has had a leading role and from what I have seen he wasn't wow.

0

Nope, sorry, I'm with @pigsnout there. Seo Kang-joon's playing what has become a very typical wounded-puppy role which, as they said, is like the lead character of every kdrama ever.

Compared to the degree of nuance and subtlety required of Park Hae-jin as Jung, it's really nothing special.

0

I guess I am not seeing the nuance or subtlety. All I see is emotionless cold Jung who switches to cutesy Jung around Seol then back again. Anyhow it's all subjective no offense meant.

0

I agree. The more I saw him in Cheese, I really began to hate his character and now I'm hating is face. After hearing of all the awful treatment Park He Jin suffered, Seo Kang's on my list of do not want. He's the only one benefiting from this.

He does gut wrenching way too well so even if that's not exactly his character in this, I expect him to be awesome in it anyway.

I'm also super excited about Kwangsoo being in final negotiations. I think he's perfect for the role. And Jo Jin-woong is my current ahjusshi crush lol. Poor Seo Kang-joon getting all the hate when all that he ever did was to act, which is his job. The actor has no say whatsoever in how big a role his character will play in the script, so if you're unhappy, hate the writer or PD instead. Or maybe, consider this, did Park Hae-Jin really offend anyone? Is he somehow lacking in his interactions with the PD and staff? Idk, there could be a lot of factors, and it's ridiculous that SKJ is getting blasted.

Good point. I kind of feel sorry for him getting all this hate. At this rate, he'll end up as little liked as Jin Se Yeon because of behind the scenes politics.

I like Seo Kang Joon in CITT, a lot less in his other projects, but even I am a little tired of seeing how much screen time he's taking. In any case, we can liken it to BOF with how much screen time Ji Hoo was getting in some episodes where Jun Pyo was practically non-existent. I wonder if there was a public outcry about that then, as it is now. Pity CITT's run is not longer than 16 episode, then we can have more of Park Hae Jin in later episodes to balance it out.

in BOF there was no problem with Ji Hoo sunbae being so much part of the story in some parts because even in the Hana Yori Dango manga, the story was like that, Doumyoji was absent and Rui was the one by her side for a while. They didn't make any extra stuff there.

With Cheese the problem is that they are cutting Yoo Jung out of scenes he had in the webtoon and giving it to In Ho instead. Even those who don't read the webtoon are starting to feel In Ho gets too many parts, so it's not like BOF.

Seo Kang Joon is OK, it's only the In Ho shippers and some of his fans who are ridiculously trying to bring down Park Hae Jin, who might annoy people.

Yes, REALLY now. My past comments about 'certain actors'? What are you even on about? Firstly, the initial comment was asking to stop talking about a drama, not any 'certain actor'. I don't go commenting about the injustice for an actor NOT EVEN RELATED to a post, comment after comment invading it like there's no better place to talk about it.

I don't give a damn if CITT is crap now or not, but it surely has zero to do with Entourage and who rejected/is casted. One or two comment relating to it because of SKJ makes sense - discussions after discussions on conspiracy theories related to CITT doesn't and I have every right to call it out just as much as you feel like you're entitled to discussing irrelevant topic on any thread.

As for "someone I like getting criticism" - whoops, go figure I haven't even tried to 'defend' the someone. Criticize him all you want, it is absolutely relevant in this topic. Talking about how CITT has gone astray? No relevance whatsoever.

You don't get to dictate how people react to a post or what they say in their comments, end of.

Whether you think it has 'nothing' to do with the topic or not is irrelevant - people go off-topic and discuss other actors and their previous dramas in casting threads ALL the time. You're not jb, gf or one of the mods, you don't get to tell people not to comment here just because they said something you disagree with.

0

I get to say what I want to say, including how I feel about off-topic discussions and how people should stop it, because this is a comments thread, end of.

Whether you like what I say or not is your issue, not mine. You are not in any place to decide if its right or wrong for me to be annoyed that the post has been invaded by subjects not related to the original topic. You are not JB nor GF and if they had an issue with it, they'd have told me just as they'd have told everyone else who said the off-topic posts need to stop. Sawry if you don't like my attitude, but I really don;t give a damn. Cheers.

Meanwhile SKJ is just mezmering as In Ho.... Despite I'm really annoyed at CITT director because might be due to his performances Director is just went all out flash his character and ignore Jung as a lead.

.....Seo Kang-joon, better than Im Shi-wan?

This is a joke, right? Because if you really think SKJ working his one-note puppy role in Cheese in the Trap is better than the sheer range of roles Im Shi-wan's done in Misaeng, The Attorney, Equator Man, Waiting For Love and A Melody To Remember....

No It's not a joke, I've watched Equator Man and Misaeng from the start until the end, And Im Shi Hwan didn't display the range of Seo Kang Joon has pull off at CHeese in the trap. Let's agree to disagree

I will believe you're a troll because there is now way in any universe SKj is a better actor than Im Siwan... that's like saying 1 is greater than 10000000000000000000.

That or you're being sarcastic.

Why am I not surprised to find this article is full of even more whining, I can't wait until CITT is over.

I was never interested in the original but I may take a look at it, the cast looks good so far and since this is a kdrama maybe they'll flesh them out more, like javabeans says.

Meh. SKJ's characters always ruin dramas for me. His performance in CITT is extremely overrated.

I can't put my finger on why he bothers me, but there's just something too obvious about the way he plays his role.

He's no Park Bo-gum, that's for sure.

I like Seo. He's capable and can make you feel for his character even when they may be a jerk. He just doesn't bring a lot of nuance unlike Im. I honestly think that Fantagio needs to find the best possible role for his skills which may be outside of TvN. They have a tendency to just pick the quickest option which has hurt him.

Im Siwan's out so I'm out. Lee Kwangsoo better run far away from this drama too.

Fantagio, great job!
