News bites: March 19, 2016

Kim So-eun, Lee Won-geun

  • They should make for a very cute onscreen pair: Kim So-eun (Scholar Who Walks the Night) and Lee Won-geun (Sassy Go Go) are confirmed as the leads for Korean-Chinese web drama Dugeun Dugeun Spike 2. I wonder if her We Got Married hubby Song Jae-rim encouraged Kim to take the job, as he co-starred in the first season with Hwang Seung-un. Dugeun Dugeun Spike did well on Sohu.com, SohuTV, and various websites, prompting the production of a second season. [Sports Chosun]
  • Waaaah, another 1987-er prepares to enlist: Joo-won passed a selective exam and has qualified to perform his military service at a special promotions unit of the Seoul police (others who served in the same unit: Jo Seung-woo, Ryu Soo-young, Lee Je-hoon). A source for the actor said he plans on selecting a final domestic movie or drama to film before entering basic training. [Sports Chosun]

  • Namgoong Min, Han Ye-ri

  • He really attacked his last two psychotic bad guy roles with gusto, and now Namgoong Min (Remember — Son’s War, Girl Who Sees Smells) admits that the villainous roles took a toll on his psyche. He said recently, “I’m going to stop playing villains in dramas now. If I receive a proposal to play [such a role] in a film, where the actor has more freedom to express himself, I might give it a shot.” He’s trying his hand at directing next, and will be directing Light My Fire, a criminal investigative thriller movie starring Oh Jung-se, Park Hyo-joo, Lee Dong-hwi, and Park Jin-joo. [Maeil]
  • Han Ye-ri (Six Flying Dragons) will work with a trio of award-winning directors on a film, but there’s a twist: Yang Ik-joon (Breathless), Yoon Jong-bin (Kundo) and Park Jung-beom (Alive) will be acting versus helming in Jang Ryul’s latest film. All three are known for having acting chops in addition to directorial skills. Han is reuniting with Jang (also referred to as Zhang Lu; they worked together on 2015’s Love And…) for Chunmong (which translates to “spring fantasy” or “happy dream”), in which she’ll play the love interest of the three very different men. Each is unique, and their only common denominator is their passionate love for Han’s character. They’ll compete with each other, but also empathize with and comfort one another, and the film will be filled with warm laughter and tears. [My Daily]

  • Shin Mina, Kim Jin-woo

  • Shin Mina is also showing her loyalty to director Jang (she starred in his Gyeongju), and has agreed to cameo in the movie. The news articles refer to the film as Saminhaeng, meaning a track or destination for three men, but the premise sounds awfully similar to Chunmong. The movie will head into production soon and cameras will begin to roll before mid-year. [Star News, My Daily]
  • Kim Jin-woo (Remember — Son’s War) has been cast as the lead in makeover web drama Mask. A chubby and unattractive girl picks up a mask on the street one day, and magically transforms into beautiful Anita, a member of a girl group. Kim is the owner/operator of a cafe and a famous pastry chef. He lost the love of his life, and he’ll find himself drawn to Anita, who is the spitting image of his former love. Prior to her transformation (this is a fantasy romance drama) Anita had admired patissier Kim from afar. Mask begins filming at the end of March, and the format and site are still TBD. [Xports News]

  • Woohyun, Yoon Tae-young

  • Infinite’s Woohyun (Hi School: Love On) has been cast as the lead in Mongdang Campus Olympics, a film adaptation of a popular webtoon. Yoon Tae-young (Neighborhood Hero) is also involved, and filming began on March 10 in Gangwon Province. [My Daily]
  • Chinese production companies had already snapped up the rights to Sweet 18 and Full House, and now they’ve added two more. Jo Sung-hee, who penned She Was Pretty, has been hired to write the Chinese remake, for which Dilraba is being courted to star. The Chinese edition of Coffee Prince is also coming out soon; it will star Yang Le and Xu Lu, be directed by Kang Shin-hyo (Heirs), and will begin filming in April in Beijing. [TV Report, My Daily]
  • There were rumors for a hot second that Lee Byung-heon and Ha Ji-won were being courted for a John Woo film starring Fukuyama Masaharu, but Variety has the update that Zhang Hanyu and Stephy Qi Wei have landed those roles instead. Fukuyama is a detective chasing Zhang, a framed fugitive. A remake of a 1976 Japanese film called Hot Pursuit (itself based on a Japanese novel), the movie will be called Manhunt and will be partially backed by funds from SM Entertainment. [TV Report, Variety]

I hope that means Han Ye-ri dropped that God of Noodle drama. I was praying for her to drop it after Lee Jee Hoon declined. Thank you drama Gods lol.

I'm so happy that she is going back to Chungmuro where she belongs and working with 3 film award winning actors/directors. That's pretty awesome! Director Zhang Lu is one lucky guy.

I'm a bit confused here. Is the name of the movie Saminhaeng or Chunmong? All the actors and Shin Mina's cameo is under Chunmong.

Anyway, I'm rooting for Director Yang to end up with Ye-ri just because I like him a lot lol.

I'm excited for that movie because I really like Ye Ri in SFD, and the premise sounds so interesting. Just so sad that it takes forever for a movie to get subbed :(

I feel it's a big shame Kim So Eun's talents are wasted on another web drama. I watched her starring in some boring web drama with an idol and I wondered why she chose to act in it. I had hoped that after Scholar, she would be more in the spotlight.

Maybe this is one step to gain more popularity esp in China. The first season of this drama was a success in China ( I cannot remember how many views exactly).

But I do hope this is her last web drama. If drama won't do justice to her talent, she should consider to do more movies.

I saw that web drama, the first episode only I think. It was such a doozy, and I'm with you...KSE was so wasted there.

Ikr. I love her to bits and pieces, and I really want her to land a good lead role but this casting is just weird. The Chinese netizens are all skeptical.

I know it kind sad to see kim so eun in a web drama instead of getting back to the big screen, but since she starting in a new company + web dramas shows they has a big impact + it filmed in short time ... why not <33

I'll pray that after this webdrama she'll pick a big project.

WTH? Dilraba will play Kim Hye-Jin?

Do people really think Hwang Jung-Eum is as annoying as Dilraba? I don't even think that girl can act.

It is a shame because ppl still know her as Ga Eul. It will be nicer if ppl know she is at her best in sageuk ( Empress Chun Chu, Horse Doctor & SWWTN).

YANG IK-JOOOOOOON! Chumong reminds me of Our Sunhi. I'll take that.

Kim Jin-woo is likeable and funny even if I forget about him in b/t roles. I hope it'll be one of the better web dramas.

KSE just signed a contract with Will Ent last month (or early this mknth) so I am glad that she already landed a lead role in a drama even it is only webdrama. I have a hope in her new agency because they have some well know actors like Kim Jae Won Lee Jin Wook, Choi Kang Hee, Lee Bo Young and Kang So Ra. So I wish it will not take a long time before she land a lead role in a good drama ☺ #pray

What's even cuter is Mr crinkles was the younger version of song jae rim character in 'moon embracing the sun' and kse is starring opposite him in a web drama.

They were the 1st couple i watched in wgm bc i watched it for kse and grew to love sjr....and oms & kyw is the last couple i watched in wgm.

I do agree. She needs another lead. Liar 2, anyone?

LG was not really did well in term of rating, but was well received internationally. part of me does not want to see KSE to do a character like Nam Da Jung again ( it is a piece of cake for her), but I realize I should not be greedy. It is matter of time before she gets a good lead role. If the LG 2 is really happen with the same casts, I will watch it definitely.

awww Crinkles <3333

I know it's only a web drama but I hope it does well, especially in the Chinese market. I have never rooted for four rookie main leads to hit it big(ger) as hard as I have for the Sassy Go Go kids, so I hope they all go on to have great careers.

The first season was well received in China, so there is a hope for second season too.
One of the reasons because Song Jae Rim was in first season & now his virtual wife will be in season too. Solim's popularity is no joke. The season 2 is yet to be filmed but fans already requesting Season 3 with Song Jae Rim & Kim So Eun.

It will be good to Lee won geun to gain more popularity among China fans.I hope all of SGG kids will do well too. They are talented. Any news on Eun Ji? I guess she might busy with her singing career.

I believe Eunji is releasing a solo album soon so she's busy with that. I do wish we could see her in another acting project though! Preferably with Ji-soo.

I'm also rooting for Chae Soo-bin to pull another breakthrough, she's too good to languish in bit parts and the second lead bin for years.

I love Kim So-eun, I hope she gets even bigger roles now with her new company. She's one of the actresses that can manage to have chemistry with any of her co-stars. I liked Lee Won-geun in Sassy Go Go so I'll definitely be tuning in. Heck, I even watched Falling for Do-jeon for her.
