News bites: March 5, 2016

  • Yay for Splish Splash Love — it’s scored over 10 million views and broken all sorts of web drama records. Director Kim Ji-hyun said, “It’s shocking. Even though it’s a short two-episode drama, I think we were able to receive this love because of the actors and staff. I’m thankful, and I will work harder and hope to bring viewers [another] good project someday.” Yes please! [Ten Asia]
  • Ji Chang-wook is returning to the small screen, but it’s not for a Korean drama, as many of us had hoped (sob!). He’s headed back to Shanghai to film Whirlwind Girl 2, where he’s joining the romance and martial arts drama as a lead in the second season. Cameras start rolling March 20, and he’ll film there and in Changsha for three months. [Star News]

  • Ji Chang-wook, Go Jun-hee

  • Go Jun-hee (She Was Pretty) is headlining her first Chinese drama, The Rhapsody of Summer Dream. Based on a novel that made a top ten young adult fiction list in China in 2014, it will be about classical music, choices and love. Zhang Han (Meteor Shower series) has been cast opposite her, and filming will begin soon in Shanghai and Prague. [Joongang]
  • This casting is fun: Kim Ji-suk (Sassy Go Go) has been cast as a self-absorbed attorney and friend of Eric in Oh Hae-young Again. He’ll woo Eric’s eight-years-older noona, played by Yeh Ji-won (The Producers). The latter is reuniting with writer Park Hae-young (they worked together on Old Miss Diary), and she’s been cast as a director at a large conglomerate. Widely considered a total bitch at the office, her character is hiding an alcohol addiction outside of work. Kim becomes her man to lean on, and she’ll begin to fall for him. The mystery romance about two women named Oh Hae-young stars Eric and Seo Hyun-jin and follows Pied Piper on tvN in May. [Joy News 24 1, 2]

  • Kim Ji-suk, Yeh Ji-won

  • Showdown, the fisticuffs movie starring Oh Ji-ho and Lee Joo-seung, has cast Sohn Eun-seo (Answer Me 1988, Strange Daughter-in-Law) as a ladylike character with maternal instincts. The film about an online war of words that turns into a real-life fight will be directed by Shin Dong-yeob (Untouchable Lawmen) and also stars Lee Jung-jin and Shin Jung-geun. [KBS]
  • Oh no, it’s been two years, and the Age of Feeling cast STILL hasn’t been paid. Producer Ray & Mo hopes to resolve the issue by the end of May, but the actors aren’t holding their breaths. [Star News]

  • Kyung Su-jin, Kim Go-woon

  • There are a lot of exciting film projects in the works, and Will You Be There is a prime example. Based on the eponymous novel by Guillaume Musso, Kim Yoon-seok will go back in time to meet his younger self (Byun Yo-han) and convince him to go after a girl. Kim Ok-bin’s little sister, Kim Go-woon (Dugeun Dugeun My Life) is hashing out the details to play the love of his life and the woman they’re (he’s) searching for. Cameras will begin rolling before the end of June. [Star News]
  • Another film to watch out for is manhwa adaptation King’s Case Files, which has just added Kyung Su-jin (Bluebird’s House) as the female lead. The movie will be directed by Moon Hyun-sung (Korea/As One), produced and distributed by CJ Entertainment, and will star Lee Seon-kyun as a crime-solving king and Ahn Jae-hong as his plucky sidekick. Filming begins in May. [TV Report]

As a fan of both Yoon Doo-joon and Kim Seul-gi, this drama totally appealed to me!

Add in the mix of a cute web drama and I was sold!

Would love to see them reunited, too! :)

LOL for all of you who were wondering what our stance is on the news... no, we're not thrilled at all with Ji Chang Wook accepting a new Chinese drama. Not one bit. Even the Chinese fans are up in arms over this new casting; they're telling him to go home and stay home (in a nice way, of course).

But maybe there's a teeny-tiny consolation wondering if this is just for him to waste some time until a proper Korean drama is presented for his consideration. Yup, that's our story and we're sticking to it. Still... *sobs*

I miss him in a Korean drama.. and wish there's a project good and interesting enough for him.

Is Ji Chang Wook any good in Chinese dramas?

I mean, I'm watching DotS and their non-Korean actors are better than the usual day players, but they still make you wince. Do they at least cast him in a way where his speaking/comprehension skills make sense?

There's a huge difference between fluent actors playing immigrant/other characters and an actual non-fluent actor taking on the same role.

Me too! I have never clicked the More button that fast. Was hoping for a reunion or sequel (or anything really as long as I can see more of these 2 and the production team combo) but anyway, yay for 10 mil! So happy it got the love and recognition it deserves.

SSL is still my no 1 most favorite kdrama of all time. Not since Coffee Prince that a drama has given me so much feels.

Now, who do I have to pay so I can have Lets Eat 3 with Doo Joon and Seul Gi?

Oh Age of Feeling cast STILL haven't been paid?? What happens to the producers/production company? You can't just run away from your responsibility and at least there should be some amount of money you had when you produce a drama allocated directly for the casts, right?
Hope it resolved soon! I didn't and don't intend to watch it but I feel bad for the actors and staffs who have to endure it for more than 2 years.

Not a rarity in k-ent. To this day I still don't know whether the "Fugitive: Plan B" drama cast and crew have been paid. The scandal had broken after the the released news that leads Lee NaYoung and Rain hadn't gotten their paychecks a few months after the broadcast.

True. I think Hyun Bin and Song Hye Kyo were never paid for World's Within. They waited so long they both just gave up and said forget it, if I recall correctly.

That's really messed up! O.o I mean I guess for Hyun Bin and SHK it's not a big deal - even though it's still crappy for them to not getting paid. But for young actors who aren't making a lot money it's NOT okay.

I think there were issues with payment of actors on Valid Love as well.

Unfortunately it's happened so many times before. When fans get angry on why the original trajectory of a drama gets so disappointing (a.k.a. "train wreck"), we should always keep in mind that there might be more serious problems than the writers' sudden incompetence that just wasted talents or the actors' bad acting. The live-shooting system and repeatedly disappointing ratings, especially for high-cost dramas, have caused irreversible damages more than once.

The worst thing I've read was the suicide of Faith's PD, the same man who directed Sand Glass and Eyes of Dawn, two of the greatest hits in the '90s. What if the writer had done the same? No Healer? The horror...

I always wonder why they cast korean actors in chinese dramas. I know a big reason is because of their popularity and the money, but I don't think it makes a "good" drama because of the dubbing and the disconnect with the language? Has anyone ever watched a chinese drama with a korean actor that you felt was natural and un-awkward? If so, pls tell me because I haven't... Absolute Boyfriend, Park Hae-jin's chinese dramas, etc have all... been disappointments for me. Also, in general I find it kind of annoying that chinese dramas use dubbed over voices even for regular chinese actors? Like in Victoria's drama with Calvin Chen.... haha sorry for the rant, i just felt a little sad that JCW wasn't gonna be in a kdrama this year :((

I can't say that dubbing has ever helped, benign is the most that they can hope for there. I hope to see Jung Il Woo in the upcoming Chinese movie The Rise of a Tomboy, curious if he'll have chemistry with Zhao Li Ying.

About Ji Chang Wook's drama he just finished filming-- is there any possibility that he spoke his lines in Chinese? He's been learning the language, and he's received kudos for singing in Chinese very accurately. I have no idea if this is even a possibility that would speak Chinese in the drama. It would be so cool though!

Splish splash love seems like it was being used to gauge how audiences would respond to Kim Seul-gi as a romantic lead. I'm sure the original acting plan for her was "spunky best friend", but they were catching on that she's very popular with the audience in everything she's been in. So this project was to see if she could carry a show on her own. Can she be the romantic lead? The answer is, clearly, YES. Expect her to headline her next project. Classic Hollywood used to do this all the time. When an actor was showing promise, they would put them in a small project and just observe how the audience responded. Sometimes they would put two promising actors in one project and look to see who the audience noticed more.
