Ryu Joon-yeol joins Hwang Jung-eum in a Lucky Romance

Score! Ryu Joon-yeol, who had a huge debut year with Answer Me 1988 (also the films Socialphobia and Glory Day, and the variety program Youths Over Flowers in Africa), has been chosen to play the leading man in MBC’s upcoming rom-com Lucky Romance, which just confirmed Hwang Jung-eum a day ago.

I’d heard some fan speculation about how Ha Suk-jin (D-Day) would be a good fit for the uptight, incredibly stingy hero and thought, He’d be perfect. Then I saw this casting and thought, Even more perfect! It’s a tricky role to cast because the hero can be uptight and brusque, but I think Ryu has the goods to allow us to still love him even when he’s being kind of a jerk. I like this casting. A lot.

The story features an eccentric heroine who’s blindly superstitious and obsessed with fortunes, who hangs all sorts of bad-luck-warding objects in her home (from charms to chicken heads), who receives a dire prediction from a psychic saying that death is in her fortune within the year unless she manages to right the bad luck she’s accumulated. The way to do it: Have a one-night stand with a (preferably virgin) man born in the year of the tiger, or 1986.

Enter our hero, a stiff, Scroogey 29-year-old with a sense of frugality that borders on the epic. He sees everything in terms of money and has never dated because it’s a waste of funds; he rifles through trash for recyclables, eats old leftovers, cuts his own hair, and argues for discounts like the orneriest ajumma on a bargain hunt. He’s hilarious and maybe even a little unlikable, and he sees the heroine as absurd and perplexing — and also a money sink, because she’s behind on rent and he’s just taken ownership of her apartment building. He evicts her, she tries to seduce him, comic mishaps ensue, and along the way they gradually start understanding each other and fall in love.

The character was originally named Je Taek-hoo, but has been renamed Je Su-ho for the drama, which has to be for all the punning opportunities: je-su literally means luck (and to the heroine, he’s her ticket to it), and is also a word, when used in slang terms, that means pain in the ass (literally “no luck”). And as far as I can tell, the character will be both of those things. I don’t know how Ryu Joon-yeol’s comic chops are, but this is a character who is funny in context — he’s serious, but the circumstances will make us laugh. I hope!

Lucky Romance will follow Goodbye Mr. Black and premieres in May as a 16-episode drama.

I wish he wasn't jerky. Cha Do Hyun, Shin Se Gi, Jung Hwan, Kim Shin Hyuk and Healer have spoiled me. I want sugary heroes not bitter ones.

!!!!!! i did not think he'd return to dramas so quickly, so this makes me so happy! i'm curious to see how much i'll like him as a different character.

the drama itself already sounded super fun, one i could easily picture hwang in. i don't particularly like hwang jung-eum nor have i liked her drama choices, but i did really like she was pretty, and i marathoned kill me heal me over the christmas holidays due to all the hype about it. while she does tend to overact (i HOPE she addresses this), i like that she goes all out for her characters. as a result, she ends up selling her characters, at least for me. but she could be so much better if she didn't overact.

it's not a pairing i'd ever would have thought of, and if it wasn't for she was pretty, it's not one i would've been excited about. but hey, she was pretty was a great feel-good watch while i lasted, and it was largely thanks to hwang too. so i'm hopeful!

Okay, I've never seen him acting since I have a huge allergy for the Reply series but I'm willing to give him a chance. I was going to watch this for Hwang Jung-eum anyway regardless of who her co-star was. Good luck Ryu Joon-yeol.

I too have an "allergy" to the Reply franchise. I couldn't get through the first one so I never bothered with any of the subsequent installments. We differ on Hwang Jung eum though I think she's probably the most overrated actress in Kdrama. Her overacting borders on the absurd, she sometimes reminds me of an annoying mime she's so tryhard.

Didn't even watch Reply 1988 and I'm beyond thrilled about this casting! From the snippets I've seen about this guy, he's a perfect fit and I'm sure his JH fans are beyond happy with this. Let HJE show you why she was picked. I'll choose to wait and see why his casting and hers were chosen.

Waaaa! I'm just so happy I'll see Jungpal onscreen again soon. Plus Glory Day! Speaking of which, I actually thought about the age gap when I first saw the news(I don't mind but I still thought about it). Then I remembered that he was 30 lol. I keep thinking that he's in his early twenties.

And I heard that Lucky Romance will be competing with Entertainer. HJE vs JS? Interesting. Well, hope they both do well.

I'd been keeping my eyes open for an article for the lead actor of this webtoon-drama for some time now, since javabeans mentioned it was a weirdly cute and interesting drama - and bang, this news.... It made me smile ear to ear on my way back from work.

I thought it was impossible to ever see Ryu Jun-yeol in another drama for 2016, with two movies to film. I was wrong, and I'm happy to be proven wrong!

Too bad Hwang Jung eum is hit or miss for me. I find her overacting annoying. I could tolerate her last drama though so I might give this a try since I haven't seen RYJ in Reply. One good thing for him is HJE often overacts so badly she can't help but make her co-stars look better.

FOR ME, HWANG JUNG EUM DOES NOT OVERACTS. HER COMEDIC TIMING IS PERFECT. SHE CAN MAKE ME LAUGH EFFORLESSLY. MAYBE YOU FIND HER OVERACTING WITH HER FACIAL EXPRESSIONS BUT THAT'S WHAT I LIKE THE MOST WHEN SHE DOES ROMCOMS.

AND FOR THE MALE LEAD, SHE SURE IS VERY LUCKY TO BE PAIRED WITH JUNGEUM WHO'S A VETERAN AND WON MANY ACTING AWARDS. A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR HIM INDEED.

I'M SO EXCITED FOR THIS!!! #LUCKYROMANCEFIGHTING

No it's not her face. I think she's pretty and I even like her husky voice. It's the screaming and shrieking coupled with the over exaggerated facial expressions I find annoying and not really all that funny.

Tremendously delighted that Junyeol is being casted in Lucky Romance. I have been impatiently waiting for him to be in another drama and have lost hope that he will be in one this year when I found out he will be in 'The King' & 'Taxi'. Nothing pleases me more than finding out that he will be in the same drama Hwang Jung Eum has been confirmed for.

Ohmydramagod

Thank you for making this happened.
I don't have any preference on HJE,but RJY is love.

I don't get why there must be limited physical contact, as the story will be the heroine tried to get one night stand?

And i recall witch romance, the age gap between 2leads were enormous - the male lead on his early twenties! But they managed to have great physical contact scenes. Eventhou its only on the earlier eps hahaha..

I hope HJE and RJY and the whole crew (hoping for a great scriptwriter and PD) will do well and surprised everyone esp the doubt'ers.

When javabeans first wrote the post on Lucky Romance, I was sold on the plot.

Ryu Junyeol coming into the picture as the male lead - oh em gee. *Squeals of excitement*

I wished the next month was May, but on the bright side, I'm glad I don't have to wait another three more months for this.

This is translation from Eyes on Ryu:

It is an adaptation from a webtoon with the same title, but instead of portraying it as it is, the drama will adapt the background material from the original story and will showcase a new story through the team-up of Director Kim Kyunghee and Scriptwriter Choi Yoon Gyo.

Ryu Jun Yeol will take the role of the cheapskate-richie Je Suho, a CEO of a game company that graduated as an engineering major. He will play alongside Hwang Jung Eum, which will take the role of Shim Bo Nui, a lady who lives while believing in superstitions blindly. A fortune teller tells Bonui that she need to change her life by spending a night with a man who was born on the year of the Tiger, also preferably younger and virgin, if not someone might die that year. Going on a man-hunt, their paths crossed when she learned that her landlord, Suho, might be the man she is looking for to turn her life around. What kind of comedy will these two show and will true love bloom between the two despite the circumstances?

Lucky Romance is said to have 16 episodes, to air Wednesdays and Thursdays starting this May, following MBC’s Goodbye Mr. Black.

I really like Hwang Jung Eum. She has a knack for picking great dramas. But, even the screeching and over the top acting gets to me. Lol. She's great in melos and can really deliver when it comes to emotional scenes, but her comedic scenes are really obnoxious. I really want her to dial down the crazy and hopefully I can enjoy this drama to its full extent. :)

Omg, YAY!!! I can't wait for this drama!

Haha, now I wonder if Hwang Jung-eum's gonna go for that long pink hair like the webtoon's!? Would that add onto the list of her unattractive hairstyles in a drama, or would it turn out looking good? I kinda wanna see her sport the pink hair, but idk! Either way, please let her have nice and tidy hair! Is that too much to ask for?

Eeep, can't wait!!!

respect to the source material is the key. it will be hit, no more crap like orange marmalade

and for info RJY drama debut is the producer as rookie PD in episode 1.

if there is any plan for producer season 2 i hope they consider RJY for the lead as a rookie PD in different program, not 2D1N like KSY. maybe musicbank so they can get PBG to make cameo as MC n Girlsday as guest star. that will be great for meta joke

Uggghhh..I find hwang jung eum incredibly irritating to watch on onscreen and from the sounds of the character she's going to play..This is probably going to be the most annoying she's played so far(and from watching her previous work that says a lot) ..I love love ryu jun yeol to pieces but I cannot stand HJE onscreen..I think only Im going to end up watching his cuts on youtube..P.S I've tried watching her multiple times trying to convince myself that it was just the characters she had played..but nope she continuously overacts every show I've seen her in and the constant hideous screaming noises she makes me want to knock her out cold with my fist.
