EXO’s Suho stars in fantasy romance drama

Did EXO have a press day or something? Groupmate D.O. just joined fantasy movie With the Gods, and now Suho (Kim Joon-myun) is headlining a new drama. I’m less familiar with Suho’s acting, since he’s only been in one thing — angsty youth movie Glory Day/One Way Trip opposite Ji-soo and Ryu Joon-yeol, which I haven’t gotten my hands on yet. The movie is getting good reviews, so I’m hoping this means good things about Suho’s acting abilities, since he’s about to star in a new drama.

The new series is called How Are You Bread (Is there a chance it’s called How Are You Brad, even though nobody’s named Brad?) and it’s a fantasy romance melodrama about a geeeeeenius pastry chef who bakes bread that grants wishes. Okay, I was about to make a crack at the genius of bread thing, but if it’s magical bread, maybe he really is some kind of breadmaster? My eyebrow is way, way up right now. Maybe he could challenge Noodle God for the ultimate title, God of Gluten.

Suho has been cast as the lead, chef Han Do-woo, the secretive patissier of a bakery that makes wish-granting bread every morning. The heroine is a writer for a variety program who goes undercover to sneak her way into the bakery, so that she can convince the chef to do her variety show. It’s described as a warm romantic melodrama about the couple’s sweet, topsy-turvy love story, and the bakery’s bread that gives hope to weary people.

It sounds like the description for a web drama honestly, but as far as I can tell, it’s a full-length series. Directing is PD Kim Young-joon of Athena, Third Ward, and the movie Bichunmoo, and writing is Kang Soo-yeon of the Korean-Chinese co-production Best Couple and the web drama Under Black Moonlight. Aura Media (Doctor Stranger, Bride of the Century, Best Couple) is producing.

How Are You Bread plans to start shooting in April for a simultaneous broadcast in Korea and China. They don’t have an air date or broadcaster attached yet.

ROFL, but I'm at work and can't do that. But goodness gracious!! That'a a fun title, what should I do so the network will use God of Gluten instead?!

Great, now someone needs to cast Yoon Doo Joon in a drama as the Overlord of Rice and we'll have all the major carbs covered.

Heh, imagine that, the Noodle God, Bread Master, and the Rice Overload, trapped in an eternal battle to find the supreme Ruler of Calories!!!

Why, yes, I have been watching too many superhero crossovers.

Is he near any good to be the lead? The plot sounds hilarious tbh.

I have such trouble telling the current generation of idols apart. Is it just me or do most of them look pretty much the same?

Have to admit that I find it extremely fascinating how much the Korean drama industry and pop industry overlap. I've never seen anything like that before; so many dramas, both good and bad, have at least one idol whether as a cameo or main lead or anywhere in between. I wonder how the two industries became that intertwined?

Okay, that was a bit of a sideline, sorry! As for this drama, I kind of like the idea of this plot, exactly because of how silly it sounds. I'm in desperate need of some fluff these days and this sounds like it'd fit the bill. That title though... *tears of laughter*

Anyone thinks it's way too soon for him to get the lead role in full-length series?
If it's D.O or Yoon Doo Joon it's understandable since they already acted in some dramas and got positive reviews. But him..as the lead? Not too sure.

I do ! I honestly love Suho, but I'm sure this is too soon for him. I can even understand if it's a second-lead role (although still doubtful).

And melodrama at that, too? I'm trying to imagine a warm melodrama... hmm hmm

I agree. I've only seen his very small and not so impressive appearance in the Prime Minister and I so I can't really say whether or not he's a good or bad actor. However, I think there are plenty of talented rookies and always-the-second-lead-actors who would be more prepared or more deserving to take on a leading role. I like him as EXO leader, but I'm not really feeling this.

Suho is like Siwon 2.0 but with the derpness ramped up by 5000. Looking forward to being completely embarrassed by this one.

Plus I'm looking forward to EXO members staring in something that isn't a giant PPL/extended commercial. (Chocobank, Falling for Challenge, EXO Next Door). Those make my brain rot.

Falling for Challenge was quite possibly the most random drama I have ever seen, web or otherwise. I still don't get what it was about or what they were trying to convey...

I actually just checked out EXO Next Door to see Suho's actiing. That drama was definitely one giant PPL. It was like the ultimate fangirl fantasy made to fan the flames. Not sure whether it was a smart move to pretty much legitimize sasaengs... One would think they have enough problems with creepy stalker fans as it is and this just makes it look like the guys will befriend you even if you're a crazy fan who looks through their windows with binoculars. I wonder if thousands of fangirls weren't begging to clean their dorm after that show ha!

Sigh totally true...Suho is like Siwon (minus the height) mixed with Leeteuk's 7year training trauma....I love him to death and give hime props for leading so calmly despite losing so many members...and I adore his awkward earnesty and soccer dad image within EXO haha BUT!! I too hope he has real chops to bring to the table, a lead role is a big responsibility! Here's hoping that the writing, directing and acting all align so we can see Suho stay in the spotlight for years to come <3 for the drama, I'm keeping my expectations realistic to low at the moment...

He did apparently study acting.

If only I could get my hands on a copy of Glory Days, but all my faves are in it so I think my head will explode.

Regardless, part of Suho's charm is his awkward dorkiness combined with his passion (2014 MAMA awards anyone (if you search for it look up the crack edit ones because they are hilarious)) so I am hoping he will bring that into this role.

I will admit to being a closet Suho fan (and its purely based on looks.. Sorry guys.. I am shallow!! I find him the most attractive from the EXO bunch). But I am not too sure how he will do as a lead.

I don't personally mind idols in dramas because Kpop gave us Yoon Doo-joon, Lee Joon, Im Shi-wan etc. So hey you never know!!

I was thinking this was a web drama also, until this line. Not sure how the set-up would work for a whole drama, but there have been dramas that I think wont work and then I love them to pieces.

I am a bit weary of idols being given the main lead role even though they have not proven themselves. Although, there are exceptions (Jung Eun Ji, Yoon Doo Joon... etc.), they are very few and far between and a lot are just plain bad. I was actually thrilled when web dramas started taking off since it looks like most idols are starting to gravitate to that medium to get their acting street cred. Being a lead in a network or even some cable dramas should be reserved for actors/actresses who have earned it.

Let's change that "idols" to "bad actors/actresses" or "untested actors/actresses".

Because we know that there are a select few out there who make us all groan when we see them on screen in lead roles and they're not idols at all.
