Oh Hae-young Again climbs in ratings, gets 2-episode extension

Well tvN sure knows how to strike when the iron is hot. Its thoughtful romantic comedy Oh Hae-young Again just broke Cheese in the Trap’s record for highest ratings in their Monday-Tuesday drama slot, and the next day there’s confirmation that the show will be getting an extension. The series is enjoying a host of critical acclaim and popularity — on top of the stellar ratings for cable (Tuesday’s Episode 8 logged 7.798%), it’s being compared to rom-com greats like My Name Is Kim Sam-soon. So it’s no wonder that the network wants more episodes.

The drama stars Seo Hyun-jin as the quintessential everywoman, Eric as the guy who wronged her but is falling for her, and Jeon Hye-bin as the woman from his past who shows up to ruin everything. The heart of show is really Seo Hyun-jin, who is especially funny, warm, and vulnerable in the role. She’s always been great, but this is definitely the show that made everyone stand up and take notice of her.

Producers have confirmed that the show will be getting a 2-episode extension, bringing its total count to 18. They’ve also promised not to fill the extra airtime with bloated material just to prolong the existing story, and said that they were already having to cut down a lot to fit everything in 16 episodes, so the extension is really to show everything they intended.

That’s easy to say (and it would’ve been moot had the drama not been a ratings hit), but hey, I appreciate producers who care enough about their story to even say that much. It’s the rare drama that can manage not to lose steam with an extension, but it might just be early enough in the story to make it work seamlessly. We’re going to hold you to your word, so make it perfect!

Oh Hae-young Again airs Mondays and Tuesdays on tvN.

Yes, I hope this team makes the extension work too. I'm optimistic for the mere fact that the extensions are decided now, by ep 8, allowing for a proper story development and not some last minute decision ripe for some skewered narrative.

I was initially against the hair when dramabeans was posting stills and teasers, but I think it works in the context of the show and his character. It makes him look like an everyman, approachable and non fussy which suits Do-kyung in a way that other haircuts (I Googled because I've never actually seen him in anything else) have not.

The latest episode was the first time I felt like the amount of Necessary Scenes had to be squished into the hour. That is not to say the scenes felt rushed, for they were still able to breathe and be delightful in their own way. But I feel like this will give us time for a better resolution for Do Kyung's siblings' plotlines, so I'm actually super pleased. Add to that the other Hae Young, perhaps. And the more we see of our Hae Young's family dynamics, the better, hee. Perhaps Do Kyung will join them for a noraebang and modern dance session, then be completely gone by the first drink?

What makes me cautiously optimistic about this extension is the fact that all the characters have interesting stories (with the exception of the younger brother and his manic pixie gf) so they have enough material to fill the episodes with content.

The cast and the staff all seem pretty happy working together, so when the extension rumors came out I had a feeling they will extend, if not for the story, at least so they could work longer together.

It felt like they edited a lot of original parts actually. I've seen some pictures of filming two weeks ago and saw it was on the following week's episode. I also took notice of Jeon Hye Bin's nail art and used it as basis of how long ago her scene was filmed. HAHA.

Overall, think the writing is pretty average (very uneven) and most of the characters aren't that interesting or are just plain annoying (mother being a stock, one-note stereotypical character,; did we really need a THIRD character, the sis/boss to be down on the dumps romantically and her drunken craziness has gotten beyond stupid; younger bro and his more annoying younger GF).

But the saving grace is Seo Hyun-jin.

While her character is the best written of the lot, wouldn't say that it's one of better written characters in a K-romcom, but SHJ takes what she gets from the script and makes it 100x times better (w/ a less talented actress, don't think OHY would be the hit that it is).

Loved SHJ in LE2, but she's taken it up a notch.

Hopefully, things even get better ratings-wise and this show launches SHJ into the next level of stardom (think a whole line of PDs and writers are hoping to get SHJ for their next project).

SHJ was perfectly cast for this role. She is just doing an amazing job, but the whole cast is doing a great job too: Eric, the pretty Oh HaeYoung, the siblings, and the lawyer friend. I think the writing is really good. The storyline has to be engaging for me to watch (because I won't watch an entire drama just for a certain actor no matter how good they are), and so far it is. I really like how the premonitions serve as a device to pull the story forward. It is gratifying to see how they fit into the plot.

Required fields are marked *

To be honest, I don't really get the hype of this drama. I watched like 3 or 4 episodes (I don't even remember) and I found the story.. just.. uninteresting? The directing is great and Seo Hyun jin's acting is very good but well, it's kind of slow and stereotypical. I'm also tired of those stories and issues about wedding and wedding again, like it's the ultimate purpose of life.

I agree with DOTS. I LOVE Song Joong Ki but that line "are you still sexy in the operating room?" made me cringe. As a medical professional, that is just all sorts of wrong for me.

As for OHYA, I just love this drama. Sure, the writing is uneven sometimes but it's the characters and how they're portrayed that's so endearing about this drama.

He wasn't supposed to take revenge. It's because he got drunk that's why did that mistake. And honestly, men would do that. It depends on the person's personality.

I agree that DOTS did not excite me as much as OHYA. I never want Wednesday as much as Monday right now. I just kinda watch everything to end for DOTS and actually I'm more towards GooWon couple than SongSong. But OHYA, I loveeeee the whole cast, everyone and I just can't wait for Monday too come, I never rewatch ongoing drama episodes so much, well except Discovery of Love. And I just realized both are Eric's drama. <333

I don't know how long you have been a kdrama watcher but if you have been for a long time then you would know the differences, this drama is everything but stereotypical. From second leads who are not mean just for the sake of being mean, to the mom who is not the normal holier than thou chaebol moms. The main lead girl is written so differently and SHJ makes her better, even the lead guy is written so differently than any usual drama leads, he has major flaws, not like usual leads where he is a soldier but never gets defeated ever, is immune to PTSD and doesn't ever has any inner conflict or has different political view than the current government.
The story has heaps of feels, great unpredictable side characters and the best mother of dramaland ever.

He was not rejected, he was stood up, she at least got to save her face by saying she was the one who broke up the wedding.
While nothing really justifies revenge, but why do you expect every character to behave the same way when they are faced with the same situation, this has nothing to do with being anti-feminist, its human nature to be different from one another. The guy has major flaws and we need to see how he mends them, because if we get the same perfect guy from the start then there will be no character development at all which is the case with most recent dramas, DOTS I am looking at you.
And everybody seems to forget that what happened to Tae Jin was more like a domino effect, the thing he did was ask a close person to pull out an investment, it was petty and cheap, how would he know that it would lead all the other investors to pull out and the man ending up in jail.

0

Required fields are marked *

I actually agree with your assessment. OHYA has been bloated before, with the extension it's going to 12.5% more bloated.

0

Required fields are marked *

The writing is very uneven and nothing to write home about.

Can't really recall a scene or a line that I thought was great/memorable.

But like I had stated, SHJ has turned her role into a memorable one (which would not have happened w/ a less talented actress - can only think of 2-3 off hand who could have pulled off the same magic).

As for the rest of the cast - their acting has ranged from decent to good, but nothing that stands out.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Really?! I'd call the mom out specifically as NOT being a stereotypical character. We're used to controlling mothers who do "what's best" under the excuse of love, and mothers who drive off girlfriends, but this mom is a golddigging viper and there's not a ton of gloss on that.

I especially like that there are stages of her awfulness. There's her manipulation of Do Kyung, but you think you've hit her depths with extortion - and then she flat-out abuses Pretty OHY. And it's not like there's a fix to it, Mom is just laser-focused on using her son as a bank and she will get downright vile to anyone who threatens her cash flow.

I also think that Soo Kyung is a pretty remarkable character. Mean and drunk and hilarious and terrifying, but also heartbroken and protective and very complex in the way she's dealing with the OHYs.

I wouldn't say any of the characters are remarkable, but some of them are quite different from the usual mold and the way they interact is refreshing. They make SENSE. You actually understand why this seemingly random group would operate well as a family. That's hard to pull off - I'm liking Gong Shim right now, but those families are almost bogglingly stereotypical. I don't feel that way about OHY.

Required fields are marked *

I love, LOVE Oh Hae Young's mom. She's weird and funny and so relatable. Kim Mi Kyung of course is a vet but this may be an even better role than her turn on Healer as an ex-cop turned hacker.

0

Required fields are marked *

Gold-digging vipers are common in K-dramas (as well as soap-geared TV shows the world over), so the mom being one is hardly anything different or new (she's just one who happens to be a mother of grown up children).

And besides that stereotype - she is just a one-note character who doesn't have any depth of character as the "baddie" (like the mother in "Secret Garden") and hence becomes farcical and anything she does loses any weight.

Feel that Kim Ji-seok is a bit wasted here - not that the writing for his character is bad like for some others, but for the "best friend," he really doesn't have much weight (despite his involvement in the revenge).

But then again, it's not everyday that an actor gets a 2nd lead role as well written as KJS's part in INR2012.

As for Soo-kyung, the writer took the cheap way in trying to get laughs by making SK a wacko, binge drinker.

1st off, doesn't make SK much believable as the highly proficient business exec and 2nd, the attempt at drunk humor falls flat (SHJ, otoh, during the times OHY is a "happy" drunk actually manages to inject some charm/humor in her character's drunken stupor).

3rd, totally get I'm supposed to really feel for SK regarding her misery over the loss of her romantic partner, but feel little of that as that story-line falls flat (since it's not done well at all).

As for Eric - while similar type of characters, enjoyed Eric more in "Discovery of Romance."

I didn't expect the show to blow up like this, wow. Really happy for Seo Hyun Jin (who's been underrated for way too long, she's an excellent actress) and Eric finally has a drama hit! Yay!

I only watched the Three Musketeers on fast-forward for Seo Hyun Jin (loved her as the crown princess) but I thought it would be a good move for her to land herself a role in a tvN drama so she can get some more attention (I don't think she's starred in anything particularly buzz-worthy on the Big 3, though she's been really good in their sageuks) and then she was in Let's Eat 2 and now OHYA. Maybe she'll become tvN's new darling lol, like Hwang Jung Eum is for MBC. Idk, I'm just glad she's finding some mainstream success. She deserves it!

Eric actually had drama hits before. But very long time ago. Bulsae was the big hit (25% ratings) where people started to know him. And then Super Rookie which got more than 20% ratings. And his Strongest Chilwoo and Korea Secret Agency also did pretty well in terms of ratings. But after military service, I think OHYA is the big hit.

Not sure about Seo Hyun Jin, but I think she got pretty high ratings for Lets Eat 2.

And hope DK gets some spoiling. After she whacks his mother upside down and chase her out of their lives.

So yay for extension but dying for another extra week. As it is am rewatching episode 7 and 8. It's rare, really rare where I can find such a well paced rom com.

The story is very well done, produced and acted. Each part, with the exception of PDK's mother's, comes out as an interesting person. For once, female lead #2 is likable (well, to a point).
Of course, PDK being a sound engineer, I am much more aware of every sound in the drama, wondering how it was created.
I hope the premonition of a car accident, is not too accurate, possibly more emotional than physical.
I love the fact that I laugh and cry in the same episode...
So much to say about this k-drama...
I love it and hope to love it more and more as the 18 episodes unfold.
Great job!

Yeah, me too. I'm like a crazy person. I laugh like crazy, then I cry (esp ep 8-the karaoke scene with her parents). I wonder, if my roommate starts to think that I might go crazy too..lol

Hopefully the extension is not going to ruin the drama. I'm glad but also nervous about this. Extension can be either a good thing to wrap everything nicely or extra weight that is not needed. We will see!

That "kiss" premonition has me on my toes PLUS the one about the car accident. I can't wait!

Hurrah for Mondays and Tuesdays! They have dramatically improved now that I have a drama to eagerly anticipate. LOL.

Do Kyung, I am falling in love with each passing episode. How can a character be so quietly perfect?

From my opinion, I think the kiss preview happened because Do Kyung tells Oh Hae Young about her marriage. Maybe, he wants to be serious with her and starting by telling her the truth. Idk, just my assumptions.

Maybe it just me but I feel like this story actually tells about Park Do Kyung and his involvement with two Oh Hae Young's life. The narations mostly from his side. From two last episodes, seems we see the development of Park Do Kyung's characters alot and I feel, it will more about himself conflicts (especially after pretty Oh Hae young and Han Tae Jin back). I think in the next episodes, we can see the real of him soon.

I just hope that this extension doesn't mean more tears and sadness. So far this show has managed to mix funny and sad pretty well, but I've seen one too many shows fall into full melo in their final quarter, so I'm a bit apprehensive about the extension.

I think the extension will work out. I can't get enough of Oh Hae Young with her parents. Best parents of the year!

And it would be a delight to see the evil mom go down hard. #notsorry

That ep9 teaser though. CAN MONDAY COME FASTER???

More OHYA? Oh, yeah!

Perfect timing for this announcement as I was just about to start singing the My Beloved Drama Is Already Half Over blues.

Yayyyy the ratings are awesome! :D

I'm usually wary of extensions, but I'm happy to see more of OHYA. Please be good and satisfying to the end!

I think they may spend some more time w/ the supporting characters like Jin Sang and Do Kyung's sister. I think they're suppose to be a couple?

I'm really happy for Seo Hyun Jin getting more recognition too.

Before the second episode this week I was beginning to worry how they would fill up the whole run without losing steam. But Tae-jin is back and seems oddly sinister, Do-kyung is picking a fight with him, the other Hae-young just barely struck a chord where I think the girls might be able to become friendly, and our Hae-young's work quality has come up again (which, yay! I thought they would never get back to her job), so I think all that can be handled in such a way as to fill out sixteen, or perhaps even eighteen, episodes. A rare instance, but I'll put my trust in this drama.

I love this drama so much but I'm letting the episodes stack for the sake of my health, otherwise I'll be consumed with thoughts while waiting for the next ep every week.

@Bex

You are smart. AND strong-willed, I may add. I'm a nervous and anxious wreck now waiting for Monday to come.

Sort of off topic, but I never really enjoyed MNIKSS. It seems like just a standard romance drama. Maybe it's because I've seen too many Korean romance dramas. Romance dramas all inevitably end the same way--the two people get together--that they all start to blur together.

tbh I am not really a fan of extension, bc it feels like drag out something unplanned to please fanbase, fan ofc gonna like anything from drama they like, not a wrong move but
I just hope kdrama can have this special episode idea, like in Jdrama, so the main story is over but adds another story to tell that doesn't circle in the main story or resolve in with the main story

like a canon, or some extended story, or flashback to the parents story,
so then we can have another great short ep about the drama

Perhaps they can add to Noona's French romance some.
That would be nice.

Yes, I knew it from the moment I watch this drama! This drama really gives out fresh vibe and it's different from other drama. Seo Hyun Jin and Eric do a good job! Their chemistry is superb and I always looking forward to their relationship development in every episode. The supporting cast, The sister, Park Hoon & Anna are in charge of being the crazy people and gives out the laughing material besides the one that Seo Hyun Jin had given out. I can feel the pain and guilt showed by Seo and Eric in each episode. That is why, I love this drama very much! More love than I give to Secret Garden.

This is like one of the best drama. A romantic comedy that is fresh, rare and entertaining. All the characters all lively and unique. Debak to Oh Hae-young Ugly for acting like the most watchable, entertain, jovial, lovely and most unfortunate characters. You succeed in making me feels embarrassed too whenever you are...lol...

I can't stop laughing from the 1st ep and until recent eps there are still parts that make me smile. Now, I can't wait for Monday to come. I even watch raw which I can't understand and watch again Eng Sub when it being released. I am glad there are 2 more eps. Just hoping that the extra eps are entertaining too.
