Park Shin-yang turns down Jo Deul-ho extension, KBS keeps trying

Well, this is interesting. KBS is currently in talks with the cast and crew of its successful Monday-Tuesday series Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho to extend the show by 4 episodes, bringing the total count to 24 (and give its follow-up drama Beautiful Mind another two weeks to get its act together, no doubt).

Then today, lead actor Park Shin-yang, aka neighborhood lawyer Jo Deul-ho, announced that he turned down the extension because he has a movie lined up to start shooting immediately after the drama, which you would THINK meant that the extension was not happening. But then the headlines just kept coming out that KBS wasn’t going to give up, and that it’s not over till it’s over. I’m beginning to get the impression that KBS does not like to let go. This series of headlines doesn’t have fun puns like Jealousy Incarnate yielded, but it’s still pretty entertaining:

I guess that means an extension is still a possibility? Except that it’s not, because you can’t have Jo Deul-ho without Jo Deul-ho. Maybe I’ll just sit here with my popcorn and wait till they sort it all out.

Well, this is a first! anyway the writing is kinda childish so no need for more extra episodes.

Lol. KBS, just let it go. Just find something to fill those gaps. Maybe after the 4 episode special drama, you can re-run any special drama before.?

I am actually not fond with the idea of extension of drama, If it is 16, better finish it at epi 16.

LOL @ JB. SO true, TOO true.

@Rj, MBC has been trying to get Lee Young-ae to star in a Dae Jang Geum sequel for years (it originally aired in 2003). MBC likes to bring up the topic every now and then and say that Lee Young-ae is 'looking favourably' at the project only to be constantly denied. It's pretty funny. (Excellent series too if you haven't seen it yet - it's what got me into sageuks)

Going back and reading that timeline wherein MBC aggressively pursues Jewel In The Palace and Lee Young-ae was so bewildering. Though it would be kind of hilarious to watch KBS pursue this 4-episode extension for the next eleven years, and now I really want those ridiculous headlines.

Well, Dae Jang Geum was a global PHENOMENON. I don't blame MBC for trying and trying. And trying.

I prefer no 3
Not fair to the rest of the confirmed cast that they have to wait for 1 person

I agree with no 3. Yes Park So Dam is talented. But there are plenty of talented actressess out there who are more than deserve to be the lead. Why delaying the filming just for her? hurmm

if they're going to hold out for a leading lady, at least she's a good actress.

And hey, at least they're actually waiting till she's done filming her other drama instead of having her join it rightaway and leaving the other production in the lurch, like some people.

lol poor KBS, this is their first actually successful Monday-Tuesday drama (ratings-wise) since, what, School 2013? No wonder they're desperate to hang on to it, they probably couldn't believe their own good fortune.

When has KBS ever accepted to yield in any given situation ? Remember the fight they're having with SBS over that Gong Hyo Jin drama (I don't remember the name) that's supposed to aireceive in the next months ? The production company chose SBS, but instead of accepting it and moving on, they blamed it all on Gong saying it was because they didn't accept her "crazy" demands, refusing to let the show go to SBS.

Gong Hyo-jin actually reduced her fee to star in Producers because she wanted to do the drama and not break KBS' budget - it's highly unlikely she was playing the diva like they claimed, and makes them look like ungrateful, bratty liars.

What pissed me off even more is when they listed those "crazy demands", the demands were all reasonable and in the realm of work. They tried so hard to paint her as a difficult actress.

soapbox, what did they say she'd demanded? I missed this entirely...

It's such a shame when actors are treated this way. I keep hoping that there are signs things are changing, and they are being treated with more care and respect rather than forced to work under horrible conditions and often enough ruin their health because of a badly organized production. I see this kind of behavior - refusing to accept their decisions and wishes - as just another sign of how little regard actors (and no doubt everyone else involved too) are often given by the networks.

Park Shin Yang can't win KBS2. If he don't act for the extension, KBS2 can easily write more about other characters, make the drama more draggy, if they want. Park Shin Yang's scene can shorter and shorter after every ep,... Actors don't have any power.

Good idea!
It's 'worked' for Cheese anyway. They can learn from it: the first male lead can finish his shoot as schedule and add more scene for second leads. Even if main lead only appear for 10min, it still count (sarcasm insert).

Don't think Park Shin Yang is some small time actor KBS can afford to offend actually. But I could be wrong.

I think they would get the message if they do the extension without PSY but everyone turns it off when the extension comes on. It will take viewer protest via ratings for them to pay attention. Perhaps they might even consider making 1 or 2 short dramas like Splish Splash so that they have a cushion in case of an emergency. I hope PSY doesn't give in, however I'm afraid KBS will blacklist him if he doesn't. Do they do that?

Persuading?? More like harassing!! He said no and no is no!!! Its ironic how this is a legal drama but they dont even seem to respect the contracts signed demanding him to move his filming schedule! I just pictured them even harassing the people in charge of the movie to push their schedule back... More than them wanting to cling onto the good ratings, it seems they want to buy time for the beautiful mind's actress... Cant they air re-runs, a special about the drama or a short drama tho??

They should just give Kang So-Ra a mini-spinoff for 4 episodes. I'm assuming the show will end with him reuniting with his ex and their child; even if it doesn't they could just say they are taking a family vacation on Jeju Island to work on things. Then let her have 1-2 cases on her own with the regular supporting cast. Odds are the antagonist prosecutor will lose his job by the scripted finale so he can come work for her.

I don't know if an extension makes sense but Neighborhood Lawyer has just tightened up its act quite a bit in the last
3 episodes (14 - 16). It's suddenly got movement & style, and
even its humor packs more of a punch. I can see why its ratings have gone up. What took so long?

Omg please don't tell me they are gonna ask him to film more in the background for current scheduled episodes but then start cutting and pasting them together to form crappy last 4 extension episodes with PSY main character suddenly gone abroad or "missing" while other characters try to find him! Please no.. Just no... No.

I'd like to see KBS to go full on crazy and try to replace Park Shinyang as Jo Deulho hoping nobody notices, preferably a new different actor as Jo Deulho for each special episode. For the fourth episode, they could use a pineapple in glasses.
