Oh Snap! Seo Hyun-jin again

It may not do much to help tide fans over until the next fix of hit cable show Oh Hae-young Again, but here’s a photo spread of its titular heroine Seo Hyun-jin for High Cut magazine, looking pretty in pink. (And red. And whatever color “mellow brown” is.)

The natural comedic actress is currently enjoying a high level of popularity thanks to the success of Oh Hae-young Again, which has already broken ratings records for its parent network, tvN. It’s well-deserved acclaim for an actress who’s been working steadily for years, and while she’s been recognized for her past work in Feast of the Gods, The Duo, Three Musketeers, and Let’s Eat 2, I’ll bet that Oh Hae-young will be considered her true breakout role.

Seo Hyun-jin definitely has the prettier eyes (among the prettiest for K-actresses).

Aside from the uneven writing and insipid secondary characters, one of the issues w/ OHYA is that it's a bit hard to believe the discrepancy in how the 2 OHYs are being treated based on their looks when they really aren't any different attractiveness-wise.

There's more of a disparity btwn Eric and his romantic rival.

That's a good photo-spread of SHJ.

I felt the same about their treatment, but have come to realize that while it's definitely exaggerated in the show there may be some truth to it. It seems that if people are given an opportunity to compare, they will. And for some reason that often comes with tearing one down in order to make the other look better. Even in the comments about the show people insist on praising one OHY highly over the other or saying that one is clearly much much prettier even though both are attractive.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think "pretty" is a relative term and not completely physical.

OHY wasn't as confident about herself and was maybe more clumsy or shy, or maybe not as outgoing with popular girls when they were in school, compared to the "pretty" OHY

Meanwhile at work, again "pretty" OHY is shown to be more confident and more of a go-getter. The plays the aegyo card, tries to please everyone and goes out of her way to keep her "nice girl" image. OHY does none of those, doesn't try to grab credit for herself, scowls, dresses how she likes, sleeps at work, and is just so authentic at being herself. This won't always win her admirers.

Then now you have 2 people with the same name (2 OHY in the same class, or 2 OHY in the same company) so now people are always comparing them and their impression of these OHY's.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

While true, guys (esp. younger guys) don't care about all that.

And even if that was rationale for the disparity in treatment - still shouldn't have been such a disparity in treatment as there was.

Like at work - why would OHY1 be totally ignored by the guys when she is one of the most attractive women there (before OHY2 joined)?

True.
My mom was even mad at the people calling our Hae Young ugly (at the drama) coz she clearly is the better looking one there.
I'm always distracted whenever I see the other Oh Hae Young coz my mom would always comment "That girl doesn't smile nicely" every single time..~Sigh..She's clearly very much invested into the drama..

I remember listening to her kpop group M.I.L.K. and Shinhwa ( I still listen to Shinhwa) way back in early 2000s, it's crazy to see them paired up as OTP now. I wonder if they knew each other when they were both at SMent in the early 00s, would explain the great chemistry. I'm glad that M.I.L.K had a very short run that was long ago because otherwise Seo Hyun Jin would of had to deal with the idol-actress label that many other former idols have had to deal with. Since her kpop time was so short she is known more for her acting which is good to see.

I totally didn't know she was in a Kpop group until like yesterday when I googled her and another member. Lol

But I don't think she was necessarily "known for" her acting until, probably, Three Musketeers, where she was cute and a bit fiesty?? I definitely didn't like her in Feast of the Gods, but that entire drama wasn't that great to begin with, and she was written as a predictable, vanilla-sort of villainess (so, arguably, her lines weren't that great either). In Three Musketeers, I saw her comedic potential for the first time, and I'm looking forward to binge-watching Oh Hae-yong Again once it's finished airing.

Didn't get the complaints about her character in LE2.

Sure, SHJ's character didn't like Doo-joon's character at the start but she had her reason (wasn't like she was an awful person) and she had her idiosyncrasies which made her interesting.

God, I think Eric is soo lucky (or not? haha) to always get an awsome talent actress as his partner. From Jung Yo Mi to Seo Hyun Jin, IMO, their talent is one level above any other actress Eric have been pair with.. Poor him tough, always get outshine by his partner... I really hope Eric acting is get pick up when the story start to focus on him . he is abit lackluster so far...

Nope. I don't think they overshined him. Those actress compliment each other with him. Que Sera Sera and Discovery of Romance were mostly about the jerk's redemption. And in this drama, he also make the romance believable because of strong chemistry.

Seo Hyun Jin and Eric are great whether they are in the same screen or not. I just feel unfair if people forget about how great Eric as an actor just because they know 'new actress' who act along with him.

Saw a bit of both - he was decent enough, but that's it.

Liked Eric better in his 2005 film "Diary of June" - but he didn't have to do any heavy lifting emotions-wise.

Thought he took a step back in SCW and "Spy Myung-wol."

Was pleasantly surprised by his performance in DoR.

0

What? Eric was so good in comedic roles in his earlier acting career. I don't think you follow his dramas. Not the level of Yu Mi and Seo Hyun Jin? Really? You must be kidding. The most memorable in Que Sera Sera was Kang Tae Joo. The most memorable in DoR was Kang Tae Ha's redemption. And OHYA still not finished yet. I'm sure he'll again step up. Lets see.

Well, compare eric acting to this two actor, it's no contest, This 2 ladies has way more talent.... It's clear he is got outshine completely by this two... there is no shame in that... Talent really make the difference.

I'm just stunned by the range of Seo Hyun Jin acting, I've never seen her in anything before. Once I start watching OHY, OMG, her range is great, way better than Kim So Yeon ( which is talent but regress alot), Ha Ji WOn (who I've never rated highly). I'm just instantly become a fan. Her acting range with Jung Yo mi almost on par at least for me

Well, for me all actors Yu Mi, Seo Hyun Jin and Eric are the same level. That's why they could create good chemistry and actings whether separte or the same screen. I have seen the dramas with those actors. And I must say Eric has great chemistry with almost all his co-stars. He has capability to make his co-stars shine. he's like the male version of Ha Ji Won.

0

Required fields are marked *

Well, creating chemistry is difference altogether compare to acting performance...

0

@missjb, yup chemistry is different with acting performance and I think Eric still as good as both ladies. Again, I never understand who some people giving comments both actress are better than him where at the end, the most memorable one in people's mind still his characters.

0

Let's get real here.

There's a reason why Jung Yu-mi is considered one of the top actresses of her generation and why she is one fo he most sought actresses for auteurial films.

Seo Hyun-jin has shown her acting chops before, but she finally got a break-thru role in OHYA (due to the popularity of the show) and she shows all the sign of being another "Queen of romcom" who is highly respected for her acting like Gong Hyo-jin.

Eric has improved as an actor where where I don't really pay attention to it (meaning don't notice it for being bad), but at the same time, wouldn't say that he is at the level where one could consider him to be among the top male actors.

And yes - "chemistry" has little to do w/ acting performance.

0

'This 2 ladies has way more talent…' Disagree. I watched 5 Eric's drama (Super Rookie, Strongest Chilwoo, Spy Myung Wol, DoR and Oh Hae Young). Seo hyun Jin and Jung Yu Mi are undoubtly good actress but Eric also has his unique acting talents that is very rare. He's so good in raw emotions. He never overact. He's very effective when it comes to deliver emotions. I never cried watching other actors's crying scenes, but when it comes to Eric, I like it or not, I can feel his pain.

There are skillful actors that act so well but you can't feel their emotions. But Eric is totally different case. He may not the best actor in Korea, but when it comes to silent acting, absolutely he's one of the best. The guy just needs act with his eyes and that's enough for us to show how he feels. There is a HONESTY whenever he acts.

KSY was disappoint in INR3 and totally agree w/ HJW.

Have yet to see her in anything where I though her acting was good, much less great.

Like I have stated before, SHJ has joined the ranks w/ Gong Hyo-jin as the romcom queen in my book (and quite possibly, may have surpassed her).

Park Bo-young will probably join the list as it seems like she is doing more TV work - and Kim Seul-gie has the potential (she needs a few romcoms as the lead).

As for Eric - he has become more than a competent actor, but he simply does not have the range that these top actresses do.

Geeze - wonder what would happen if I stated that Eric was a good, but not great-looking guy.

Seems like you don't like Eric, do you? I saw your comments several times and attacking his looks. It's okay if you feel he's not good looking. But most us think he's one of handsome man. And that's okay if you think he's not good actor. But you like it or not, his 'price' is much better that Seo Hyun Jin and Jung Yu Mi. That's the fact. He just doesn't enough time to do more acting projects due to his business and idol world. Otherwise, he may sweep all of the actors, including your favorites.

Seo Hyun Jin and Jung Yu Mi are nowhere near Gong Hyo Jin level. And Jung Yu Mi isn't A-list actress too. Both even not really that popular. Otherwise, Seo Hyun Jin would be the first choice for Oh Hae Young. While Eric since the beginning was the target of team production. That's the real thing. I don't want to attack any actress. I love them. But sometimes, their fans are annoying.

If you don't like Eric trah much, just stop looking at his drama. For your health.

0

@kayla, please don't bash Yumi or Hyunjin just because some one putting down Eric just to praise her/his bias. They're good actresses.

That person obviously dislikes Eric so he/she takes whatever chance to put him down. Don't have to be like that and put down the actresses.

0

@kayla

Geeze - why does this have to turn into a referendum on whether I "like" or "dislike" someone?

I like Eric just fine.

Not particularly a fan of Shinhwa's music (not a big K-pop fan; much prefer K-indie), but always enjoyed Shinhwa's variety performances going back to the days of "X-Man" and "Love Letter."

Eric simply isn't on the level of acting of the actors I had listed (the vast majority of K-actors can't compare to those actors), but his acting is perfectly fine and as idols turned actors, he is one of the better ones.

As for Eric's looks - he's a decent enough looking chap, but not exactly going to singled out for his looks.

And that's just a fact (subjectivity has nothing to do w/ it - looks, after a certain point, is objective, not subjective).

So - Eric is not as good-looking as K-actors like Kim Sung-soo, Oh Ji-ho, etc.

Big whoop - those guys have been blessed w/ the genetic lottery when it comes to looks.

But at this stage, Eric is better actor.

Gee, does that now make me "DISLIKE" KSS, OJH, etc. b/c I just stated that their acting wasn't as good as Eric's (much less the top K-actors?).

Taec is a better looking guy than Eric, but he's a way worse actor - so does that make a "liker" of Taec or a "disliker"?

Too many posters here - get their panties up in a bunch when other people's opinions don't match theirs.

Looks-wise, would put Eric on the level of someone like Gong Yoo.

Does that make a "disliker" of Gong Yoo?

Actually like Gong Yoo tons, but don't let sentiment affect my objective views on things.

And if you had actually comprehended what I had written, you would not have mischaracterized what I had stated.

I never stated that Eric was not a good actor or or that he wasn't good-looking.

He's just not as good of an actor as the very best K-actors or not as good-looking as those who known primarily for their looks.

Haven't followed Eric's rapping w/ Shinhwa closely enough (or that of other K-rappers) to make any judgment, but if someone were to say that there were a no. of K-rappers who were better than Eric - does that automatically make them a "hater"?

0

Obviously Oh Hae Young's character has more range of emotions to show than the broken Dokyung but doesn't mean that he's lacking compared to the ladies. Those scenes in EP.12 speaks for itself.

It's tiring to put him down just to praise the actresses. Before this Oh Hae Young Again, starts I don't remember seeing "top actress". I'm not putting down Hyunjin. She's good but the putting down of Eric to praise one's favorite is tiring and unnecessary.

It's not fair you compare to veteran actors. Obviously he's not at those veteran actors but he's not a bad/so-so actor either.

Silent character like Dokyung in Another Miss Oh is obviously not going to burst out all those range of emotions like Oh Hae Young. But look at all those fine subtle expressions that some choose not to see.

I remember when the casting was out, there were complains on Hyunjin's acting in Let's Eat. I'm not putting her down, just saying it's funny how some just love to put down Eric just to make one stands out.

How are people sure that another actor would do a better job than Eric? Crystal ball?

Being a vet has NOTHING to do w/ it.

The actors I listed, got acclaim for their acting pretty much from the start of their acting careers.

And Eric is hardly young (37 yrs of age) and has long been considered a vet in the industry (he's been acting for 13 years now).

Yeo Jin-goo is a better actor and he is only 18 yrs of age (was a better actor at even a younger age due to innate talent) - so age and being of vet status has little to do w/ it.

0

Again, nowhere did I say that Eric was a bad actor - think he is a pretty good actor, just not at the level of the very best like some have stated.

Some actors around Eric's age who are better -

Uhm Tae-woong
Lee Je-hoon
Gong Yoo
Song Joong-ki
Ryu Jun-yeol (and RJY is still considered to be a "rookie" as acting goes)

But there's no shame in that.

The list of actors whom Eric is better is way longer.

0

How can you compare him with senior actors? Eric is one of the best actors in his batch. Yup, for me he's in the same level with Jo In Sung, Lee Dong Wook and Hyun Bin. Are you really that mad if someone praising him? What's your problem with him actually? You're everywhere giving bad comments about him. Just leave him alone. If you really don't like him, why turtoring yourself making comments here and there?

He's a better actor than many.

He's just not as good as the very best.
