Seo In-gook up for MBC rom-com Shopping King Louis

Seo In-gook, Nam Ji-hyun, Yoon Sang-hyun

Hee, Shopping King Louis is the new drama that initially courted Yook Sung-jae to headline, and I find it funny that they’ve now cast Seo In-gook (Police Unit 38) in the role, since Yook Sung-jae’s drama debut in Answer Me 1994 had everyone calling him Little Seo In-gook. The director clearly has a type in mind, which is certainly fine by me, since that means I get to see Seo In-gook twice in dramaland this year.

The new MBC Wednesday-Thursday drama is described as an upbeat rom-com about surviving in the city. It comes from PD Lee Sang-yub of Mr. Back, King’s Daughter Soo Baek-hyang, and Light and Shadow and new writer Oh Ji-young. Seo In-gook is up for the title role, and Nam Ji-hyun (What’s With This Family) and Yoon Sang-hyun (Ms. Temper and Nam Jung-ki) are up to co-star. All three actors are in final negotiations, so it looks like a pretty done deal.

The drama is a youth romance about an amnesiac chaebol heir. The hero is the last surviving grand-heir to a chaebol chairman, and he grows up alone and adrift in America after losing his parents in an accident during his childhood. He’s described as “a flower boy youth in a greenhouse,” which I think is meant to emphasize his utter loneliness, a void he fills by shopping. Lol, like retail therapy?

He somehow ends up going from California (agh, don’t be like Heirs, don’t be like Heirs…) to Seoul, and loses his memories. He meets Nam Ji-hyun, a sweet country bumpkin who’s quick on her feet and internet-illiterate, and the drama is about their eventful survival in the city, and his journey to reclaim his identity. I wonder if it’ll be a little like Beautiful Gong Shim, which is a lighthearted version of a similar setup.

Yoon Sang-hyun has been cast as Seo In-gook’s rival, a department director in the chaebol conglomerate who will also have a loveline with Nam Ji-hyun. I don’t know that I’ll really buy that loveline, but at least it’s a secondary one if she’s paired with Seo In-gook. I like all three actors in light comedy and can see it being an addictive story with all the birth secret amnesia tropes but without the heavy melodrama, so it seems like something to look forward to.

Shopping King Louis will follow W—Two Worlds on Wednesdays and Thursdays this September.

Does he ever sleep?!

Gotta hand it to him, he sure picks a variety of roles (and manages to nail them all). The premise doesn't sound super interesting to me but I've yet to be disappointed by a Seo In-gook character, so I have faith.

Also, funny how I'd normally hear "chaebol heir" and run far, far away but the premise sounds like it's playing it for comedy, and also I'd watch Seo In-gook play literally anything.

That, and California. I turned off Heirs forever right when the English-speaking part came on, which if I remember correctly was the first episode. I don't know if I can stand watching something like that even for SIG. But I've liked/loved all his dramas so far, so here's hoping he picked another good one!

to remember seo in guk in superstar k is so great, where he is a boy from a country and his mother is collecting recyclable waste, and now he played various roles musician (duh!), school boy (reply 97 & high school savvy), ice hockey athlete cum corporate guy (high school savvy), Prince & King (King face), bodyguard (master's sun), FBI profiler (i remember you), Scammer (squad 38).

He starts from singing competition winner -> Singer -> extra role in a forgettable drama (love rain) -> lead in a cable drama (which surprise everyone with its sudden popularity) -> supporting in weekend drama -> supporting in primetime drama -> lead in primetime drama.

Hahaha. I love the drama already, more so because Seo In Guk is involved. Plus what if the story turns out to be what Pretty Man wanted to be but failed miserably at, in that Seo In Guk's Louie is given the target to like shop in 100 stores across 10 countries to prove that is the ultimate shopper who has the departmental store chaebol blood flowing through his veins. Because we all know that most chaebols males have 'interesting' taste in clothes, and our shopper has to show up in chaebol style. Looking at you there Lee Min Ho in every chaebol role you've played and Hyun Bin and your love for that tracksuit.

Seo In Guk might play a genius here. He can shop in his own departmental store/boost his sales, that way his shopaholism would be considered as working.
Oh and if he will shop there/be director then imagine the whole shop of chaebol clothes-turtlenecks and huge scarfs of Kim Woo Bin, Lee Min Ho's suits and Ryu Jun Yeol's shorts

Hahaha. I can so totally imagine it. He will be the one stop personal shopper for all the other chaebols. Like a chaebol personal shopper for other chaebols because they all have chaebol tastes and must dress in chaebol ways.

Im already like no on the premise. It just seems so greasy but I love the actors so ill try. Same here. Though the 'country bumpkin' part worries me, I hope she's not about to be typecast after WWTF. She's far more versatile and deserving of leading lady status than some of the specimens dramaland keeps trying to inflict on us.

With SIG, though? I could really get into that. I just hope the premise/story doesn't end up being as stupid as it sounds.

As much as I looove Seo In Guk, the show's premise sounded a bit... eh to me at first. But then I saw that Nam Ji Hyun was gonna be in it and I was sold. I've only seen her in Angel Eyes (I swear the bg teen story was the (only) highlight of that drama) and The Great Queen Seon Deok. You've got a point. Nam Ji-hyun will probably play slightly older than her actual age (just a few years) but as a fellow 20-year-old girl, I would choose Seo In-gook in a heartbeat.

But then again, I'm slightly obsessed with Seo In-gook so maybe I don't count.

Still, I could never imagine myself dating a 40-something year old man. The difference in life experience between a 20-year-old and 28-year-old is large enough. The difference between a 20-year-old and 42-year-old is just... unfathomable to me.

Required fields are marked *

Why not? It happens in real life. Also, we all know that she won't end up with Yoon Sang Hyun.

The 8-year gap is also not a big deal. There are a lot of couples out there who have a 10 years gap.

0

Required fields are marked *

It happens, yes, but I was talking about me and how I would feel about it as a fellow 20-year-old girl. Again, this is from a real world perspective.

When you're 20 you're probably still in college and still have no real knowledge of the real world--I know I don't. At 28 you have probably been in the work force for 5 years. Being in a relationship with someone with that much more real world experience than me would be strange. Not completely baffling, but still strange.

But in dramaland, they can make that seem like not such a big deal. Nevertheless, it's hard to make a 22-year age gap NOT seem weird. 20-year-olds and 42-year-olds are at COMPLETELY different stages in life, and I simply can't fathom two such people having anything in common. I don't see how such a relationship would work in the real world.

Maybe in dramaland they could somehow make it more believable, but in the real world I couldn't see such a relationship making sense.

Well... My mom was 21 when se got married to my dad who was 30 at the time and they been together for 30 years now. So in my peronal perspective I don't really care much about the ae gap as long as the girl our boy is over 21 years old.

P.S. My folks meet when my Mom was 16 and my Dad was 25... So yeah, strange things like this do happen.

0

Honestly, speaking as the product of a mother and father who had me at age 21 and 31 respectively, and the best friend of a girl who happily dated a 27-year-old when she was 19, there's no single correct "real-world" perspective on these relationships, especially when the younger person is in their twenties.

I personally would not have touched a 30-year-old with a ten-foot bargepole when I was 20, but obviously that's not a view my parents and friends shared.

That's not to say that there isn't likely to be an element of exploitation in extreme age gap relationships where the younger person is very young, but relationships between people in their early twenties and late twenties would raise no eyebrows where I'm from.

Right now, he seems to be prioritizing group promotions (Kr Remember That, Jp L.U.V.) over dramas, apparently having declined 3 of them so far. ^^"""""

1. Oh thank God that "Police Unit 38" is pre-produced, or else we'd be seeing Seo In Guk jump from one drama set to another, and I'd be crying for him to get some sleep instead of trying to fiddle around with the time continuum and play with his precious sleep

2. Okay, now, by this time of the year and since this type of casting has happened for the umpteenth time in a drama this year, I'm POSITIVE that all the drama writer-mins and PD-nims FOR SURE sat down for a round-table at the beginning of the year and had a meeting about what would be a good drama trope for 2016 to write into EVERYTHING.... And then they came up with casting every other drama couple, primary and/or secondary couples, with massive age gaps between the actors.... because everyone was drunk on soju and high on celebratory spirits for getting through 2015, and oh, had DOTS to look forward to XD

I'm a big fan of both leads. I love Nam Ji Hyun since Queen Seondeok era, and already watched her dramas and movies while waiting for her to get her leading role. Then she finally got it and and her lead male is Seo In Guk? It's like dreams comes true!

I just hope that the plot and characters itself will be really good. For sure though, I will love this pairing.

From June to the end of the year, SIG SIG SIG!!! My feels!!!

The premise tho, it sounds errr... and it's from a new writer. I know I shouldn't be judgmental. SIG rocked every roles wonderfully and it seems that the other actors are great as well, never watched them both. Really really hope the writing is good.

Like Savvy, the premise sounds so unlikeable but it turned out a very heartwarming kind of slice of life drama. And IRY, it sounds like a boring typical police procedural at first, but then it was a gem last year.

I thought SIG will go to Military Service right after 38 Squad. If he could make one more drama, why not pair him up with Park Bo Young, they would make a very cute couple with awesome acting.

Or, put him in K2 with Ji Chang Wok. I heard they went to noraebang together in real life and SIG is a god of bromance (from Hoya, Lee Soo Hyuk, Park Bo Gum, and Ma Dong Seok). With those two beauties on the screen, the screen might explode tho lol.

I'm deeply concerned about this project. The premise is totally old-fashioned like 15 years ago, I don't even understand why MBC would pick it up to produce. SIG always chooses interesting stories. Did he take this one out of no choice because military service is around the corner so he will do whatever one of big 3 channels offers? In terms of ratings, competitors of the time slot are On the Way to Airport starring Kim Ha-neul and Incarnation of Envy starring Gong Hyo Jin, both of which have excellent rating history and smart project choice. I don't even want to think about what rating he could get. I'm SIG big fan and I will watch whatever he gives me, but I'm just so upset.

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I'm also skeptical about the premise, but I doubt he would choose this just to be in a Big 3 drama right before enlisting. Police Unit 38 might be cable but it's doing really well ratings-wise. Plus, cable made SIG a star, so I doubt he would think so little of being on cable that he would just do any Big 3 drama. Lots of top stars are doing cable dramas now, I honestly don't think doing a show just to be in the Big 3 is a big draw for ANYONE. Not these days.

I'm just going to hold my breathe and hope this show is good. SIG has had such a good track record so far and has had such great characters, I don't think he'd pick a dud to be his last drama before enlisting.
