Im Soo-jung rejects offer for new SBS medical drama

 photo ImSooJung1.jpg

In the span of a day, Im Soo-jung (Time Renegade) made drama fans’ hearts flutter, then cry. Im has been away from the small screen ever since the heart-wrenching melodrama I’m Sorry, I Love You. I know for a lot of us, it seems only like yesterday when she was romancing it up with terminally ill So Ji-sub, but it’s been twelve years. With other film stars like Kim Hye-soo and Jeon Do-yeon submerging themselves back into dramas, it seemed like Im Soo-Jung might be making a comeback as well. She received an offer for the new medical drama Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim, but turned it down almost immediately.

Even though Im has declined the offer, the project remains on SBS’s broadcasting slate for Monday-Tuesday after Scarlet Heart: Goryeo finishes airing in November. The drama is about a passionate surgeon who initially becomes a doctor to prove to someone she could. In this medical romance drama, the heroine has a loveline with a fellow doctor, who similarly did not become a doctor because he wanted to himself, but in order to beat out and win over someone else. Details for Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim are still hazy, but attached PD is Yoo In-shik who has worked on some solid dramas like the Mrs. Cop series, You’re All Surrounded, and Giant.

It seems like medical dramas are all the rage now with SBS’s Doctors, KBS’s Beautiful Mind, and now this new one. Maybe the big three are still trying to capture the viewers of cash cow Descended From the Sun. The main writer on Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim is Kang Eun-kyung, who has an eclectic body of work, from weekend drama What’s With This Family to fantasy romance Gu Family Book to underdog success story Man of Honor, so I’m not quite sure what to expect. I guess for now, we can just think up some fantasy castings until more information pops up.

SBS plans to air Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim this coming November.

After lawyer trend died down, doctor, especially surgeon becomes the new trend again...
Han Hyo Joo in W is also a surgeon, not to mention Beautiful and Doctors after DOTS's Kang Mo Yeon.

I love her and want to see her in a drama, but I'm fine with her skipping on this one. I'm tired of doctor dramas.

I don't see what the recent rage of medical dramas got to do with DOTS? It is not even a medical genre drama, it is romance.

Lawyers, Chaebols, Prosecutors, and Doctors. Oh wait! PDs and Actors are also portrayed in many dramas ?. Can't they portray fisherman, farmer, garbage collector, taxi driver, deliveryman and other jobs to make it different? Lol.

businesses. I think drama land does tend to tackle other professions, but they do tend to get hung on a particular theme until it's been done to death. In 2012 it was Time Travel, now it's medical dramas, they won't stop until they've wrung out all the life from it, and it becomes totally boring.

Lucky Romance has computer programming. While it has decent ratings, it is by no means a runaway ratings hit like DOTS, so I doubt we'll be seeing that profession in another drama any time soon.

I think a drama like It's okay It's Love suits Im Soo Jung. Like a more romantic or melo spinoff of Cyborg? Her projects lately have becoming more and more mystery/dark related lol
