Kang Dong-won, Yoo Ah-in up for new film from director of Poetry

Critically acclaimed writer-director Lee Chang-dong (Poetry, Secret Sunshine, Oasis, Peppermint Candy) is gearing up for his first film in seven years since 2010’s award-winning Poetry, and there’s early talk of Kang Dong-won (A Violent Prosecutor, The Priests) and Yoo Ah-in (Like for Likes, The Throne) being courted for the leading roles. YES, PLEASE.

The new film, called Burning, will be about the intertwined lives of one woman, a chaebol man, and a deliveryman. That’s really all we know about the plot thus far, and when news broke of Kang Dong-won and Yoo Ah-in’s possible casting, director Lee stated that he’s still completing script work, and has met with the two actors about the project, but it’s still too early to say that the film is in the casting stage.

The film plans to start shooting in November, and my big question is how Yoo Ah-in would squeeze this movie in before army duty. He’s due to enlist this year as far as I know, which I guess means that he could technically shoot a movie in November-December and then go to army? That seems nuts, but then again, I don’t know that he would pass up a chance to do a movie with Lee Chang-dong.

I can see either of the actors playing the chaebol or the deliveryman — Kang Dong-won’s rich, amoral nobleman in KUNDO: Age of the Rampant rivals Yoo Ah-in’s rich, amoral chaebol businessman in Veteran, so they could really flip a coin. Kang Dong-won has been working like he’s got loan sharks on his tail ever since he got out of the army, and has done really well in the last few years. Yoo Ah-in is this year’s golden boy, with hit projects like Six Flying Dragons, Veteran, and The Throne earning him trophies left and right; if he’s somehow able to film yet another project before army, he might just extend his hot streak for another year.

Burning will begin production in November, for a release in 2017.

I love how the casting could go either way and still be fantastic. Ah, Kang Dong Won oppa! I'm not one to complain about your never-ending stream of HQ films, but will we never see you in a drama again?

What is up with my baby Yoo Ah In being so thin? Is it for a role?

I did notice that during Six Flying Dragons, despite not being overweight at all, his neck seemed to almost have a goiter.

I hope all is well with his health. Hopefully the military will take good care of his health and make sure everything's straightened out.

Whoa Lee Chang-dong!!! One of my favorite Korean film writer/producer/director.

His movies are not easy or a pleasant watch but they are very deep.

I'm more interested in the leading lady. I wonder who is the lucky actress that he wrote this script for? Son Ye-Jin? Han Ye-ri?

Lee Chang Dong said he's not even done with the screenplay so there's no way they'll be able to start filming in November though - I don't think YAI can do it, he has to go before January at the latest.

If I can get another Yoo Ah In project before he has to go do his military service, I would be so happy. It's seriously a pleasure to watch him on screen! Honestly, I'd watch him do anything at this point. lol

I'm really unclear what the rules are re: enlistment age, it seems people are going to the army a lot later these days?

But KDW and YAI in a film by Lee Chang-dong? I would def. not want to miss that! I've really enjoyed both their turns at playing amoral kinda-monstrous rich guys, both in and out of sageuk.

So male leads are chaebol and a deliveryman but the female lead is just - a woman? Lmao whatever Korea.

I hope they confirm both actors and ad a great actress to complete the trio. My suggestions - Moon Chae Won, Chun Woo Hee or Kim Ji Won .

He has never cast a drama actress to headline his movies. I'm pretty sure he has someone in mind while writing the script like he did with Jeong Do-yeon and Yun Jung-Hee.

Maybe Moon and Chun have a chance but I still don't see him writing a character for either one of them.
I can't wait to see who he is going to cast as leading lady.

I haven't seen Like for Likes yet, though. Tsk. Tsk. I'd better see that before this new one comes out. ^_^

We all know that dramaland's delivery man is never just a delivery man; he must be a delivery man with a background i.e. try to pay the loan sharks or else.

So maybe, the reason KDW 'has been working like he’s got loan sharks on his tail ever since he got out of the army' has something to do with this project: he's preparing to be a delivery man with a background.

[but then again, this is just me ranting non-sense first thing in the morning]

Sigh. I really want YAI to take this project but I think he stated that he's not going to work before his enlistment, and just relax in Jeju Do. Maybe he'll change his mind?

i want yoo ah in takes this role. Most of Lee Chang Dong's movies have complicated characters in it so he always choose the capable actor and actress as the cast. Poetry is still my favorite korean movie up to date. LCD's art house movies always be my favorite. Yoo Ah In is indeed capable actor, so who knows he can step up the game in international festival (I pray so much for him). Jeon Do Yeon also won cannes with LCD's movie, so it'll be a best thing if Yoo Ah In got recognized in some award festival.
While Kang Dong Won is good actor, kind of versatile, but i never saw him before in depressed character (like YAI) so i don't know how to value him. but i like his act

Lee Chang Dong is also the first and only Korean to win the Prix du scénario – Best Screenplay in Cannes with Poetry.

I have much respect for him and Park Chan Wook when it comes to women's roles in their films.
They are not afraid to put the A list men of Chungmuro as supporting characters to their female leads like Song Kang Ho's role in Secret Sunshine and Ha Jung Woo in The Handmaiden. They know how to balance out their partner's performance make them shine.

park chan wook's artwork is more extreme (but in good way) while lee chang dong's are more soft and heartwarming. actually, i like their both works but in the story-line i prefer Kim Ki Duk film. unfortunately, KKD low-point is sometimes she's put woman as sexualize object which sometimes made me uncomfortable (but lately, woman in his movie is quiet different) while PCW and LCD likes to make woman as the front row or female-centric kind of movie. even in THIRST, kim ok vin's character dominates more than Song Kang Ho's character. I'm happy because it's really rare to find female-centric kind of story in drama or movie in SK. it's quiet different in Japan when most of young actresses had already gave sign of film a-listers because of more female-centric roles there. Hope the leading lady in this movie is also great too... i won't mind if they put KIM OK VIN again. i miss her

I totally agree. It's disturbingly good if there is such a thing.

I don't watch PCW's movies in the theatre. I watch them at home where I can ff through some of the parts that I'm uncomfortable with.
Same with some Lee's work. I had to watch his films over and over in order for me to get it. My small brain hurts after lol.

I love Kim Ok-bin but she might take the lead in Evil Woman with director/writer Jung Byung-gil. He is great but I'd take Lee Chang Dong any day.

I just read the update news from the director's brother/producer that casting KDW & YAI was not true. He indicated that it's still a long way to go to complete the script. It means no chance to see Yoo Ah In in the wide screen next year *sigh*

Sorry but to me the headline here is that Lee Chang Dong is making a new movie! That alone deserves a shitton of excitement! He has an incredible sense of story and character development and his films are stealthily shot so well. Love love love. Cannes 2017!

Agreed. Lee Chang Dong is one of the best writer-directors working today, and I really don't care who is in his new movie as long as there's going to be a new movie.

One year later and I'm excited to hear that Lee Chang-dong's "Burning" is back on track.
Steven Yeun (Walking Dead) is now attached to this film. Does that mean that Yoo Ah In is still in since Kang Dong-won bowed out?

I'm mostly interested in who would be cast as the leading lady. Will it be a reunion with Jeon Do-yeon or a growing leading lady like Kim Ok-bin or one of the Indie darlings like Han Ye-ri? Jung Yumi is going to be busy with "Live" (sigh). Maybe Son Ye-jin can squeeze it in after "Negotiation."

I want to root for a movie like I did with "A Taxi Driver" and this is might be it.
