Oh Snap! IU and her seven flower boy princes

It’s rare that I look at a drama cast and think, there’s just too much pretty in there. Is such a thing even possible? But come on, if it takes you five seconds to locate Lee Jun-ki in a group photo, that’s saying something (I’m kidding, it would never take me that long!).

The cast of time-travel fantasy drama Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart: Goryeo poses for a spread in Cosmopolitan, featuring IU and the seven beautiful princes she’ll meet: Lee Jun-ki, Kang Haneul, Ji-soo, Nam Joo-hyuk, Hong Jong-hyun, Baekhyun, and Yoon Sun-woo. Seems worth traveling a thousand years for.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart: Goryeo premieres August 29 on SBS.

The worst (best?) thing about this drama is that I have actively stanned every single one of these people at different points in my life (barring that one guy who I've seen for the first time in this), and seen everything they've done while I was into them. Even Hong Jonghyun! I even went through a Hong Jonghyun phase (which I have no regrets about because it led me to the highly engaging drama Dear You.) IU is my favourite overall idol and one of my favourite actors post-Cindy. Baekhyun is the male idol I'm personally most attracted and find ridiculously good-looking. I've crack-shipped Baekhyun/IU. I've written fic for legit four actors in the cast re: their previous works ? Ji Soo was my biggest obsession last year. Kang Haneul is one of my favourite actors, to the point where I loved that we shared the same favourite actress, Jung Yumi. I've totally been super into Lee Junki and Nam Joo Hyuk.

Basically, this drama was clearly made for me.

I'm in the same boat. That's why I can't wait till the drama begins. If they keep droppings gifts like these at our feet, I feel like I may combust before the drama even begins. XD

I hope they promote this a lot, I need all the cast interviews and panels ? Although it's kind of sad that I'm fairly sure IU will have to be super contained while with them in public settings, and hold herself a little aloof and not be too friendly or have too much skinship, because of her own image, and because her co-stars are all trending actors with heavily invested fanbases (as is she).

She's already getting flack for being with them fictionally, which I'm sure would increase manifold were she to appear friendly with them in real life. Which is partly why she seems to prefer hanging out with the Scarlet Heart girls, I think. We've already gotten gems like Kang Haneul holding the umbrella for her at the wrap-up party, and she posted a picture of Ji-soo and Joohyuk on her Instagram, but it would be impossible to get one with, say, Baekhyun. His fandom is ridiculously huge and can be crazy. A pity, because it really looked like they all got along super well from all the accounts so far!

Cindy just blew me away - netizens might be mad at IU for image-related reasons, but as an actress, she has the goods and EVERYONE was admitting it by the time episode 12 of Producer rolled around.

She was the last billed name among the four leads and the one with the least acting experience, but she not only held her own against the likes of Gong Hyo-jin and Kim Soo-hyun, she stole that show, which is quite something considering the other names involved. I don't care what kind of collective amnesia people developed about it, she was great. She's earned her chops, and while I still have my misgivings about this drama, they're only on the writing front, not the acting.

Agree, IU has a special charisma and at least as a pop princess she was able to convey plenty of feelings. To me, she was the star of Producers and she was the only reason I didn't drop the show. I like her a lot. :)
She is still quite new as an actress so it is difficult to tell how good she is going to be in Scarlet Heart, but I will look forward to watch her...not to mention that I've been totally smitten by Kang Ha Neul in this photoshoot...boy, he and his long hair are something serious. Can't wait for episode 1!! :D

So I know this isn't going to be a popular opinion, but... I just cannot see what is attractive about Lee Jun-ki.

/ducks for cover/

Don't hurt me!

I think he's a great *actor* but honestly I was shocked when I realised people think of him as a great *looker*. Guys - His ears are ENORMOUS. Seriously. That's how you spot him in the group pic!

Beautiful shoot though. That green dress. Good grief.

lil don't feel alone, make it a club of 2. I also find his acting style too forceful whereas I prefer understated, but that's just a personal thing given his rep. Perhaps the style is because he does historicals.

IU looks pretty and a little young for LJK. Kind of like her better with the long haired guy in the stills - bit of Oguri Shun vibe there? Though I would have never picked him as the actor in Dongju.

Normally I find that Korean male actors tend to overwhelm their female counterparts but IU stands out even amidst her harem:)

You're not alone. I could understand him being considered sexy, you know that there are very attractive guys with not so perfect features. In my case, I cannot consider him beautiful in a traditional way and never got his appeal either. But hey, everyone has their own favorites :D

I am prepared to suffer watching because after seeing the pictures I am already shipping IU with Ha Neul...it's going to be difficult.

After taking a cold shower I tried to pinpoint why these pics are more sexy than your usual photoshoots (just for research purposes of course hee). Of course the number of hot guys, the broody look, the tanned skin, the (short) manes of glory all play a huge role but then it hit me....exposed foreheads, guys!! Is this really happening, so many hot Korean guys and none of them have bangs here....time for another cold shower. See ya.

YES! Agree 1000%. Gorgeous Korean men look even more gorgeous without bangs down on their faces. They look manly, strong, self-confident here - not like little boys! It's so funny. I loved My Love from Another Star but could never get into Kim SooHyun because of his ridiculous hairstyle. Then I saw him in Dream High and Secretly Greatly and realized - whoa -he's not only a great actor but he's hot!!! I had to analyze why and it's because he looks great with his hair off his forehead. These men are all beautiful - but they look best of all here because they look like men! RAWRRRRR!

+1000 reminds me of the Healer comments section at Dramabeans, which further reminded me that Ji Chang Wook recently said IU was his favorite artist and that she was a good actress alongside that, and proved you could be pretty and truly talented or such. IU is living a blessed life indeed these days.

That's the real surprise here - IU being sexy!

I saw a LOT of people, even here, dismiss the idea that she could pull this role off with her childlike looks, but she has a natural expressiveness that just heats it up in these photos, especially the ones with oppa and Kang Ha-neul. That look in her eyes is all woman, no childishness there at all!

The more I look at this shoot though, the more my eyes are drawn to IU, she really stands out, even in this cast. I like the fact that the drama has- as yet- pitted itself unapologetically as Hae Soo's survival drama, with even the real politick of the throne ascension being secondary to that. I really hope Hae Soo has a streak of manipulation and social navigation skills and is survival oriented to the point where it takes a while to empathise with her- I prefer that narrative far more than the one geared towards self-sacrifice and noble idiocy.

Yes! Ruoxi's character was surprisingly pragmatic and politically savvy in the original--to the point where some ppl were complaining that she was too coldblooded because she was willing to put herself first and make tough romantic decisions. I really hope they don't remove that aspect of her in Hae-soo out of fear of losing audience sympathy.

0
5
reply

Required fields are marked *

Ohh, I did not know that about Ruoxi's character but that's exactly the kind of character I want Hae Soo to be! And that indeed is what I'm afraid of, that they'll feel weighed down by the audience expectation of what an appropriate female lead should be like- especially one that has a harem of her own- and tone down the hard-headedness needed to survive in the middle of political instability/a potential coup to a sort of wide-eyed vulnerability and self-effacing kindness that automatically engages the protective instinct of the princes, without her deliberate participation.

I feel like a woman who interests a lot of men always seems to raise this sort of high school fear in both men and women that the wide-eyed, innocent "type" is all a calculated, manipulative attack to attract guys which draws quite a lot of flack fictionally (and in real life, IU herself has faced the "sly fox pretending to be innocent" drama), and so the acceptability threshold for a reverse harem is the kind of female character who is completely oblivious of her effect. While I feel like I would prefer if a lot of Hae Soo's dynamics with the princes WERE a little calculated- because that is how she, as both an outsider to the time and a woman at the time, can exercise soft power, through channelling the hard power that the princes wield, by virtue of both their royal birth and being male at the time. I feel like often a strong, independent female character is seen as the one who "doesn't need a man," but in this sort of medieval context I feel like that's an oversimplification, because a character like Hae Soo cannot possibly survive without the princes and their feelings for her or without manipulating the social rules in her favour. So I really hope she's not above exploiting that or their emotions for her survival. I would find that sort of self-awareness in the narrative v. interesting.

Zoe, your comments with regard to IU and her characters have always been a highlight of the dramabeans comment section for me (and, if I'm not wrong I think I've read some of your stuff on ao3 which I also love). I'm with you in hoping that Haesoo will make the conscious choice to play the game (of thrones) rather than just stumble from wrist grab to wrist grab with wide eyes and no idea what effect she's having on the princes. It makes for such a more complex, interesting narrative when the person plunged into the past actually finds a way to thrive and survive rather than barely avoid getting killed by the grace of his/her looks and kindness/noble idiocy.

Aaaand that's about all I have for commentary with any thought other than how are all these people so pretty.

Ah, thank you so much, that's so kind of you! I actually knew IU as an actor before I knew she was a singer because I'm not as much into kpop as I am into kdramas. In fact, my introduction to most of the so-called "idol actors" was through their dramas-- I had no idea Eunji, Siwan, IU, D.O., Doojoon etc. etc. were something called "idols", so I think I never developed that "REAL" actor v. idol actor bias. When I fell in love with IU as Cindy, it wasn't because I appreciated her and her music, it was because I loved the character and her interpretation of it, which is why I was always willing to talk about her, without feeling like I had to justify my appreciation of her acting (and I had crack!shipped Pilsuk and Samdong during Dream High so I was happy they were reunited, just like I recently started crack!shipping IU and Baek, so I'm amazed they were cast together lol).

And I so agree with you, I was actually thinking of GoT while writing that comment-- specifically Sansa. She got so much flack throughout the first few seasons for being weak (I haven't seen the latest season, so I'm not counting that in, though I think she had a big part), but the way I saw it, her development was into one of the most powerful players because she knew how to use the very limited power she had in her favour. It helped her survive in the most unfavourable of circumstances, with the Lannisters, with the Greyjoys etc. She knew, unlike the rest of the Starks, when to speak up, when to keep her head down, when to escape, what to say to maintain social propriety, even as her eyes communicated the opposite of what her mouth voiced. That's the kind of character that is always derided for being "weak" but is a proficient user of soft power and knows how to survive.

So far the trailer impressed me with how much Haesoo mentioned and prioritized her survival, and I too hope the actual drama doesn't renege on that premise and Haesoo is actively involved in her own survival, regardless of whether she has to use the princes or pretend to be their image of a girl "worth" saving to get there. I hope we also see a lot of clashes between Haesoo's modern sensibilities and the necessarily patriarchal mindset of a kingdom of the time.

0

(And oh, thank you re: AO3, kpop/kdramas are an endless rabbit hole I've realized, especially when they have endings like Producers or School 2015, lol.)

0

Oohhh. If they stick to the heart of the original you are going to be very, very pleased. BBJX took one of the most sausage-fest events you could think of (Nine Princes Conflict) and made it into a story about one woman's fight for survival and agency. And because it was surprisingly historically accurate, the conflict arising from Ruoxi's modern sensibilities and her knowledge of the future was all the more effective. There was actually a plot about Ruoxi having to decide how to feel about the polygamy of the era, that didn't vilify the 'other wives'. And without going into spoilery territory, her knowledge of history plays a *major* part in her interactions w/ the princes.

I do love Lee Jun-ki but....OMG...Kang Haneul's hotness with this hairstyle just burns my eyeballs out. I can't even....look at Lee Jun-ki...well, maybe for a moment....but KANG HANEUL......GAHHHHHHHHHHH. Dying here. What are we supposed to do? I generally don't like long hair on guys and still prefer clean-cut, short hair on Kang Ha Neul but he's one of the few K-actors who still looks very good in long hair. I have a feeling I'll be rooting for him over Lee Junki's character because I've always had a soft spot for Kang Ha Neul.

Also, speaking of Lee Jun Ki, I prefer his look and aura lately compared to when he was just starting out in the industry. I remember really not liking him before in My Girl as I generally can't stand the androgynous look on guys but the older he gets, the manlier he's becoming. Now his looks don't even register as girly to me anymore. IU has acted with seasoned actors before. Cha Tae Hyun, Gong Hyo Jin, Kim Soo Hyun in Producers, Jo Jung Suk in You’re the Best Lee Soon Shin. And having watched both of them, I can assure you that her acting has improved a lot over the past few years. It got mixed reviews at the beginning of Producers, but eventually her character, Cindy, got more positive responses from the viewers (most of the highest rated scenes in Producers are Cindy’s scenes). If there’s one thing you should be worried about, it’s the script. The only drama in which I’m disappointed at her acting is Pretty Man, whose script is pretty lackluster. I’m not biased btw. As a matter of fact, the girl is one of my favorite actresses in their 20s (I’ve become her fan through watching her drama), so I hope her acting this time will exceed our expectation.
