Is it only me?
I visit dramabeans everyday. It is one of my favorite websites. Unfortunately, it is also the most malicious website that I visit. I can not linger on the site for too long or my browser will lock up. I often have to relaunch my browser at least once in order to read a long post. It can be a real headache to get to it’s wonderful content. I am browsing with the most current version of Chrome and only have one extension loaded. This extension simply sets a new tab to my default home page. I have tried everything that I can think of and this website still causes my browser to go into the weeds. Am I the only person having issues? I would appreciate any assistance that you would be willing to provide. Thank you in advance.
It's not just you. I have had to individually block functions of the site. I think it's the ads (the viki links/ads seem fine). they really need someone to curate it. The viki stuff is fine but aspects of it need someone to overhaul the code which I'm guessing is not easy.
I'm on my iPhone and using Safari on my computer and fortunately don't have that problem.
Hope some more tech savvy Beanies can help you because I'm a techno dinosaur- if it doesn't work I restart it. Or whack it really hard. ?
Install AdBlock extension for Chrome and see the difference.
I didn't even know there were ads LOL. Makes me want to turn off adblock just to see.
Aye. Chrome + AdBlock extension works well for me.
I use Firefox w/"noscript"; it works pretty well & I can unblock the bits that won't seize up my browser.
I'm using firefox and an ad blocker extension .. absolutely no problem.
i have opera lite on my smartphone (no add ons) ... works well on that too
firefox + ad blocker
Me too. firefox + ad blocker, no problems.
Thank you! It's been very annoying. I had to relog many times.
The site was a little buggy a few months ago but it appears fine to me right now. I have the AdBlock extension but I don't run it on Dramabeans since I kinda feel guilty for disabling their ads hahahaha
I don't want to block the ads but I'm going to. It's driving me nuts.
Saaame. I use uBlock Origin (way recommend over adblock btw) on my laptop but leave them enabled on my mobile cause they are less problematic there, and I mostly browse on mobile anyway. Moral dilemma for sure tho...
Ads are 3rd party, DB has no control over them except to not have ads or to go to another ad company.
This is a problem -- if we install adblocker, DB makes no money and then if enough people do it, DB will not be able to continue.
But, unfortunately, the ads make reading DB on some platforms unreadable. For me, I can't read DB on mobile without an adblocker (it crashes/hangs the page about 80% of the time). So should I just not read DB then and not give them any clicks, or should I read with adblocker and just use up their bandwidth without giving them money?
Moral dilemma for me.
Exactly why I did individual blocks. it was worth the extra time. They really need to swap ad companies.
I use explorer and I just figured out that I had to disable an add-on. I did that a couple of days ago and all problems were fixed.
If you use chrome or Firefox, absolutely get ublock origin for ad blocking (way better than ad blocker IMO and uses less memory) and maybe ghostery to block trackers. IPhone, dolphin is good for blocking ads.
I had the same problem. I finally broke down and turned on adblocker for the site. I don't like using adblocker on sites like these because that's how these type of sites make money. But it was making the site not work for me and some of the ads were making it hard to view the site, so I finally turned it on :(
My browsers don't lock up.
But it is a pain to read DB on my smartphone for sure, due to the ads. I was also forwarded to some other (malicious?) sites while reading DB.
As others have said, DB cannot run without ad revenue. But I, too, had to resort to using an ad blocker because the ads were hijacking or freezing my browser. Luckily, I found a solution that is working for me, and is still producing some ad revenue for DB: I'm using the Adblock browser on Android, and I have the "allow nonintrusive ads" setting enabled. The browser is able to filter out the malicious ones, and I haven't had any problems since then.
I could be wrong, but I thought that the revenue is only generating by a click.
Meaning that if one just keep staring at the ad, that won't help DB. One has to actually click on the ad to gain revenue.
You are correct. Simply running or seeing ads generates nothing. Nearly all ads are "pay if clicked". I have found an occasional ads that just takes forever to load, thus locking up the page until it times out or finally responds, so ended up enabling Adblock+ on Chrome.
Nope, there are two types (I think). There's cost-per-click and cost-per-impression. The latter just needs to load, no need for visitor to click through. But it pays way less than the click type.
I'm not sure which one DB uses though.
You're right - but the pay for impression ones are way cheaper - have seen some as low as 60 cents per 1000 impressions. Pay per click can run anywhere from a few cents each to as much as $1+ each.
I don´t have any problem with the site, even though my computer is pretty much Fred Flintstones´ old hack.
I am on Firefox with Adblocker and have no problems. I also am using a Mac if that makes a difference. But I only got the adblocker recently and had no problems before so I don't know
since I have a lot to do I won´t be long. gotta make some felt samples, sew a backbag, design word clouds & order prints
no, actually, I´ll do the work first and then stop by for longer
watching: Mirror of the witch, 38 Task Force
curious about all the upcoming supernatural dramas
P.S. I have strawberries now. Not a lot, but an agreeable amount.
Yay for strawberries! ?
They seem to be in abundance here in Australia too- on sale everywhere. But not freshly picked like yours. Keep them away from grabby relative hands!
got it. *programs automatic lock-up for garden gate on face recognition*
if it works, please send me the lock prototype.
I have a nosy toddler and I swear he is going to be MacGyver next time- I could really use that lock ;)
You can go strawberry picking in strawberry farms during summer if you like freshly picked ones :)
Alas it is dead of winter now. This week has been extra cold
:( Been mainly indoors because I'm practically allergic to temperatures below 15 celcius (I know that isn't very cold but I can't help it... Im totally cold intolerant)
Glad to hear that you finally have your strawberries, dear. Though only an agreeable amount, it sure are yummy and fulfilling.. ^^
Glad to hear you have strawberries now! Enjoy them!
Which supernatural dramas in particular for you? I know I'm excited (understatement of the century) for W: Two Worlds.
the one with Teacher! I think I have read about a couple more but can´t remember the exact titles
I am looking forward to W: Two Worlds also! Well I mean if Lee Jong-Suk is in it....
oh, and that Ghost thing, Fight something
Teacher is perfect, I want to be him when I grow up...in my next life...which I don´t believe in, but... BUT!
Thanks Redfox for the instagram link, such a beautiful pic of JK, you've made my day!
Glad you have your strawberries. I don't even know how to grow them so YAY for you!
I brought in fruits for company party the other day(for 4th celebration), and people seemed to like strawberry the best (over grapes, melons, watermelon etc). That is another global thing, maybe.
Am awaiting the supernatural dramas as well. Particularly looking for Lee Jun Ki. Might even commit to watching the icy-looking C-drama.
I already tried to watch the C-drama, but it has too many formalities and court stuff... I hope kdrama will be slightly faster-paced
They're all very stiff and ultra-aware. I think it's because stories might have such a history of being connected with learning and morals and noble beings that actors are too aware of that. Which makes the serious dramas too stiff and the humorous ones almost apologetic with all that mugging wink-wink to the audience. No actor seems to feel comfortable in portraying real characters. It's like they want to show you they are acting. Not sure i'm saying that well but I get that vibe from the acting.
All that said, I'm gonna try to watch for some good cdramas this season.
yes, exactly - stiff. that´s the word. like they are not comfortable with the skin they are wearing.
I have seen very few Chines dramas that were very good. Like maybe 2 or 3 at most. The Taiwan ones are way too super-cheesy, and the Mainland ones suffer a lot from censorship and those devious little pro-Communist Party propaganda lines.
None have anything even approaching realistism - which perhaps explains why k-dramas and US dramas are are far more popular in China than Chinese ones.
It can be hard to find good C-Dramas, for sure. I really liked Nirvana In Fire. The production values were top notch and I liked the acting. I'm currently watching Good Times (rom-com). I'm going to check out Wu Xin: The Monster Killer next.
Hi there superfox,
I'm watching MotW and 38 Task Force, too. In fact, I've taken on the task force of recapping it, so if you have time, stop by and leave your comments! Working hard to get ep 4 up today, then I'll be caught up for this weekend. Seo In Guk - such a natural at swindling his way into our hearts!
I have strawberries, too, also not a lot but they're a delicious mouthful, very sweet! My lavender plants are doing well and are very fragrant. I'm keeping the garden small so that I can keep up with pruning and weeding early in the day since it's incredibly hot.
Oh, gardening in heat is a real pain, I know. Last weekend I was doing that, it was +33C in the shadow and might have been +45 right under the sun, no wind either. But we had too much work to just manage with the early hours, even when we got up at 4.30am. the good thing is early morning is my favorite time, the whole world is yours alone then.
I also have lavender, grown from a seed. the other one that we bought and planted couldn´t take the winter frost. trying to get seeds from the surviving one, which seems to be more resilient.
oh I´ll be sure to check out your recaps of 38TF! The drama took quite some time for setting up the team and is kind of like a very long equation on a blackboard. but thanks to SIG I haven´t felt a moment of boredome. He makes me believe in his character, he is so in the game that when you look at him you are pulled in too.
gosh it is hard to write, I ate a whole jar of fresh pickles, they are soooooo good. only had strawberries and pickles whole day and I am so full. how can people eat so much in kdramas.... I can´t do it...
Will check your Police Squad recap for sure! Thanks for taking time recapping this.
I keep refreshing db waiting the recap only to realize they only do 1st ep ?
I am almost done with work for today.
Made a pattern for a backbag, I want to make it out of felt scraps, thick linen canvas and silver-colored straps. The bag itself will be sort of greenish-blackish... there are way many parts though, I hope I don´t get mixed up.
and I made word clouds to print on pillows. I am not sure if I found the best word cloud creator. it is pretty good though. But I kind of remember using a different one before, that had more shapes. Dunno.
re-watched all the episodes of MotW and finally know why I was confused: I seem to have skipped half an episode, where Jun was seeing ghosts! and it is so hilarious, how did I not watch that? perhaps got half way one evening and opened the next ep next day...he needs Ninja teacher to help him learn to fight though. He has to stop just sprinting off like a ball of lightning.
Seems like the theme for the next patch of dramas is Fighting Girls - martial arts, weightlifting, more martial arts...
wrong word cloud link. here is the right one:
(it is based on peoples´ answers to what is the thing that takes up most space?). in estonian though
Sprinting off like a ball of lightning! Thanks for that visual...
Now that OHYA has ended, I'm catching up with MOTW, and enjoying it a lot. See you there?
Congrats on your strawberries! And your facial-recognition lock for the garden gate. ;-)
Happy Friday Beanies! My plate is full of dramas- a month ago I hardly watched dramas "real time", now I'm watching not 1, not 2, but 4 Kdramas and 2 Jdramas! I "blame" you Beanies for my new addiction.
Just finished watching Jdrama 99.9 Keiji Senmon Bengoshi and I'm really hoping they do a sequel. I like how every episode was a new case to defend and yet how there was a overarching storyline to gel it all together.
And I know everyone loves Police Unit 38 but I wish it was like that instead of how it is dragging out this one current scam against the smug evil dude and the commissioner. I hope the plot moves ahead faster this week! (SIG fans don't kill me, he still is very suave and cool, my grouse is against the plot)
Also just started watching Jdrama Happy Marriage- it stars Dean Fujioka who I first saw, believe it or not, in Just You- a Taiwanese drama with Aaron Yan/Puff Guo. Is anyone else watching? It's so predictable but I'm in it for the pretty.
And I can't decide what to do about Beautiful Mind- it's so darn confusing and half of me is considering rewatching episodes over again and taking notes to figure out the plot, but I'm wondering if I'm giving the writer too much credit and I'm going to be wasting my time. ?
Oh yes, and shoutout to @pogo: haven't seen you around much this week, wondering if you have fixed your keyboard yet? Vhat vill ve do for laughs vithout it? ?
I agree. I was hoping for a procedural and we got a caper drama. Oh well it might still be fun.
Haha this is hilarious because as a SIG fan I was all "sigh, I guess I'll sit thru a procedural for him, but ugh." And now that I've been hearing it's more caper-y (mmm that should be a word) I'm so much more excited to watch when I finally get a minute!! I wasn't thrilled with how serious his last drama was (it was good) so maybe we'll have to take turns Oshi!
I think what is great about 38PU is Sung-Il has to treat the much younger Jung-Do as an expert in this case, a more experienced professional, while Sung-Il himself is pretty clueless and blue-eyed in such matters, even though he is in a position where he is supposed to know the secrets of the swindlers´ souls. But I still think there is probably something Jung-Do will learn from him too. If they have him be the ultimate swindling genius to the end without ever giving leverage to the older guy, it will feel unnatural. a guy has to have at least one victory to stay in the league.
I actually love that it's a caper show instead of a procedural. There are enough procedurals around. PU38 is a nice change of pace for the genre.
I love capers too. So I'm satisfied. That said, I am ready for the plot to move a bit faster.
Ahhh! Chandler! I need some way to contact you or we need to form like a small group somewhere to gossip. We won't see each other in OHY threads anymore qq
Yes! We have to! I'm so un-savvy at things like this so you may have to take the lead.
ROFL, I keep finding all these hilarious BTS photos for OHY. Say what you want about the show itself, no one can deny the awesomeness of this cast:
I tried to join that thing that you linked so could message you my gmail. I'll figure it out this weekend in between nephew birthday and a *horror* casual date.
That photo of DK on Santa's knee cracked me up. Thanks for that remedy for OHYA withdrawal. Although it just now hit me that TJ could pass for a long-lost brother of Lurch. Must be the haircut...
*waves up at OSHI*
It looks like the coast is clear... Good to see you're back in form.
I just needed a bit to regroup is all.
I am also loving the caper! I was getting major Ocean's Eleven feels watching that drama! Because let's face it that is really what this show is with a few facts changed! And can I say that Seo In-Guk is killing it. Here he is conning all these people and I find it hard to feel bad about because is is just so charming!
What's your favorite jdrama? I haven't really seen one that has the same production quality or charecter development that kdramas have. Also do you know of a good anime that does not have supernatural elements?
I ask because I live in Japan and need to learn Japanese, but haven't really got into the media aspect of things.
First let me say, how envious I am that you live in Japan. I love the food and the culture and want to go there again. (Haven't been in 10 years!)
Unfortunately I only recently started watching Jdramas, so I don't have a favourite really...
I know what you mean about the production quality, but what I like about J dramas is that they are shorter and some can be very humorous, offbeat and quirky, which I like. Sometimes Kdramas drag out the story too long and I get bored. I really liked 99.9 Keiji Sermon Bengoshi though, but it has no romance. I like sports related dramas so i liked Buzzer Beat which has Yamapi, though that one is quite old.
Hope this helps, and good luck on learning Japanese! Im starting Korean lessons soon and Im quite excited.
I know u're asking Michykdrama..but..hehe
Jdramas have wide range of theme and stories, but unfortunately many of them are not as 'grand' or neat as kdramas in term of drama production. Ridiculous hair style, 'unique' fashion and bizzare characters are commonly found. I want to recommend you some but pardon me, my recs are a bit old, because I haven't watch any recently. Here they are:
Soratobu Kohoushitsu (2013)
Proposal Daisakusen (2008)
I'm not really fond with 'Rich Man Poor Woman' but many people love it.
Hope it helps ?
Im so happy you answered because now I have more Jdramas to add to my ever-growing list to watch :) Thanks!
Yess, Bloody Monday is FANTASTIC. It's a bit older (2008?) so the production values aren't like what you'd find today, especially in KDramas, but the story and pacing... it's just so addictive. And fantastic characters. And so many female characters!! So! Many! And in an action/suspense/thriller show!
The show will ruin your sense of trust... don't trust anyone!
I still thinking about bloody Monday and then I remember it's the hacker story with Hiroki Narimiya at the end, love that one
Soratobou is one of my favorite too, it has go ayano,
Pro-dai keeps making me cry, one of the penultimate 2nd chance story imo and I find Yamapi really fitting the character as wallflower, it's hard to notice him in the original timeline and he indeed needs to change that,
Zenkai girl is cute, I almost mistook it as Switch Girl in my mind,
Love your recommendation ^^
There are some awesome dramas out there. Some of my favorites are:
-Liar game (all of them!)
- Kazoku Game
- Bitter Blood
- Nobunaga Concerto
- I'm Home
- A million stars falling from the sky ( OK, I admit it, I'll watch almost anything if KimuraTakuya is in it, but most of them are really great!)
- Never let me go
Can't think of anymore... but I do agree that if you should watch Hana Yori Dingo, just because it is a classic hehe!
I hope you don't mind my answer about the Jdrama (I can't help my keyboard)
- Hana Kimi (totally bias mode for Nakatsu)
- Wakamonotachi/All about my sibling
- DR. JIN
- Hanzawa Naoki
- Manhattan Love Story
- anything with Masato Sakai, Eita and Go Ayano
about anime without supernatural element ,
you might like the slice of life or the romance genre or Shojo anime, not the monster or shounen that usually more popular, as the example:
- Your lie in April
- Honey and Clover
- My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU
- Hanasaku Iroha
- Kimi to Boku
if you tried this anime, it's another world about animation that doesn't include fighting to the death (even though that kinda my favorite Genre)
ann ah hunter x hunter is in hiatus again, I hope Togashi get well soon.
thanks Sancheezy! always can count on you to have a whole list of dramas for me to check out :)
soon Im not going to have time to eat as well ;)
haha thank you,
I spent my whole primary to high school days on manga, anime until now, you may don't believe if I say I do watch One
Piece from ep 1, since a kid even if I am not from Japan, and now it has over 700 ep, still ongoing and I am still on hold on the anime,
and when I am in high school, many of this anime has a live action that led me to watch Jdrama,
Yay I watched some of them (Adding rest in my ever growing list of j-drama to watch.) I think I like Dr.Jin the best among what I watched in your list.
JesO, my advice in watching J-Dramas is forget about production values. J-Dramas are decidedly non-pretentious, and as soon as you embrace the simpler quality, you'll actually learn to enjoy it. It's such a nice change from the super slick (sometimes TOO slick) cinematography of the latest K-Dramas. I've actually seen more J-Dramas than K-Dramas, so I'm trying to watch lots of K-Dramas to even out my balance and thus my recommendations are a bit older for the most part, but here they are:
-Bloody Monday (2008), as already mentioned, if you want something super addictive and thrilling and pretty messed up. Don't feel bad if you end up falling for the villain... J's a totally screwed up bastard but Narimiya Hiroki makes him strangely attractive. Oops. There are two seasons!
-Kazoku Game (2013), a drama you don't expect to be a psychological thriller but it totally is. This is not a realistic drama in any way, but it says lots of interesting things about society and parenting that DO apply to real life. If you want to watch something pretty crazy (in a good way), I recommend it.
-The Memorandum of Kyoko Okitegami (2015), the only really recent one I've seen. It's light mystery fare with a charming cast of characters. It's not deep or really that addictive, but such a pleasant watch.
-1 Litre of Tears (2005), a classic, only watch if you want to bawl your eyes out.
-Hana Yori Dango (2005)--HEAR ME OUT, do NOT judge this drama because of Boys Over Flowers. HYD is actually a pretty well-made drama with an awesome heroine portrayed by the amazing Inoue Mao. You will love Makino Tsukushi, even if you hated Jan-di. Two seasons plus a movie.
-Hana Kimi (2007), totally light, fluffy fare, but so much fun to watch. You just might have to turn your brain off. Ikuta Toma is the real highlight of this drama and it's honestly worth the watch just for his character.
-Legal High (2012), a pee-your-pants hilarious legal comedy. This is more on the ridiculous comedy side, but the two leads make it work, and the way they bounce off each other is amazing. If you want something purely entertaining, look no further. It'a a total riot. Two seasons and two specials (although I haven't seen the last special yet).
Tried to give a good variety of thrillers, rom-coms, procedurals, and comedies. Hope you find some J-Dramas that work for you! Again, don't compare them to K-Dramas. They're very different. :)
waah I love your list, can't believe I watched it all
so +1, your list is must watch
J-Dramas are decidedly non-pretentious, and as soon as you embrace the simpler quality, you’ll actually learn to enjoy it.
ps: based on my self-proclaim detective ala nakatsu (haha)
Wow, thank you all SO much.
I went to bed and now this thread has exploded with so many jdramas! Awesome. I will try compile a mega list so if anyone asks next time I can whip it out. Haha. Thanks everyone!
Someone asked me this a couple of weeks back and so I'll take the opportunity to answer here. Some are very silly -- the Japanese do silly very well. And some are more serious.
Ooku--Tanjou~ (Arikoto/Iemitsu Hen)
Yamato nadeshiko Shichi Henge
Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de
The Long Love Letter
Nobuta wo Produce
Deka Kurokawa Suzuki
Rich Man, Poor Woman
Osozaki no Himawari
Biblia Koshodou no Jiken Techou
Karamazov no Kyodai
A Chef of Nobunaga
Sennyu Tantei Tokage
Boku no ita jikan/The Hours of My Life
There are a couple dramas with mysterious serial killer women -- one a girl and one a woman with an incestuous revenge scheme. But I don't remember their names off hand.
are you talking about Siren ?
and have you watched Ooku tanjou? want to know your view on that drrama....
I just googled Siren. No, I don't know if that's it. But I think I'll go find Siren online to watch.
The serial killer ones were
1) a girl who has run away from home. I think she might have been abused by her father. She is being tracked but she's always one step ahead. She's damaged and dangerous. I remember a scene with her and a kid.
The second one is about
2) a woman whom men just become entranced with. She has femme fatalism galore. I think her picture was the thumbnail for the drama. She looks very frail. A cop starts tracking her and she tells him he may be her brother. But she's also got another lover. Not sure if that is Siren or not. But I think the drama was entitled for the villainess.
Ooku Tanjou? is that the one with Masato Sakai and the female shogun has a male harem. I seriously love Masato Sakai. He's my favorite j-drama actor
@ Carolle McDOnell
on top of my head
1) could be Fujiko or The perfect insider
2) Saki (with Yukie Nakama)
but I might be wrong, the synopsis is so familiar
I love Masato Sakai too, it's so refreshing to male harem in
how he treats her and how they make the age gap seem convincing enough in a period drama, it's like seeing a concubine story but with male
Yes, it IS Saki. Thank you.
Fujiko isn't the name of the other one, though. The serial killer in the one I can't remember was a teenaged girl.
Boku no ita jikan/The Hours of My Life is very good, but make sure you have a lot of tissues at hand! Mira is fantastic in it ?
Oops, Miura, not Mira ?
"Anime that does not have supernatural elements" - that's why I started watching anime, and then dramas, in the first place. My time has come! (just let me get my media notebook ?)
*Most of my favorites, have watched some 2 - 4 times*
- Special A (hypnosis is mentioned in episode 9 or 10)
- Toradora (first episode has a lot of swearing but then calms down)
- Anne of Green Gables: Anime
- Itazura na Kiss (been adapted by 5 countries including Kor "Playful Kiss" and 2 j-dramas)
- Say I Love You
- Kimi ni Todoke
- Lovely Complex (also been adapted to a Jmovie)
- Skip Beat
- One Week Friends
- Baby Steps
- Nodame Cantabile (I'm slowly watching the j-drama)
- Your Lie in April (someone mentioned it above, 2nding it) *On Netflix atm*
- Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun (plays off of Shojo tropes, good to have an understanding of Shojo)
- My Love Story
- Tanaka is Always Listless
- High School Fleet (all girl sailors)
- Haven't You Heard, I'm Sakamoto (a segment mentioned a ghost)
- Anne Happy/ Unhappy Go Lucky (about girls with bad luck, I don't consider it supernatural, but some might)
Sorry, it's so long. I hope the list helps. Best wishes with learning Japanese!
thank for gekkan shojo nozaki kun, as a fan, I am ashamed that I forget that in my list, T.T,
I bought all the manga and thanks for mention it
I am planning to watch ore monogatary next week...
and as a fellow sakamoto watcher, I am really digging his cool, cooler , coolest!!!
+1000 your list,
Haha, no problem. I wish I could watch OM for the first time again, lol.
Sakamoto makes me cracked up every week. The worded intro and that theme song ? Cool, Cooler, Coolest!
I'm glad you mentioned Kimi to Boku on your list. And thanks for all those j-dramas!
Yeah, I felt 4th is draggy too, hope 5th will pick up the pace and the story develop upward to keep us viewers hooked and satisfied.
I'm with you regarding Beautiful Mind. I'm still kind of undecided about it also.
yeah... I think since there aren't many episodes out yet I will try... but my rusty brain to use and try and figure out the medical stuff and see if it makes any sense... maybe then the story will become clearer... because they are throwing so much info in each episode its like a blur...
Im terribly biased because of Jang Hyuk Oppa but I feel like he wouldn't have signed up for a terribly written drama, I think maybe the time crunch made it difficult for them to put it together and thats why we are so confused? I can hope right? right?? lol.
I've heard of Happy Marriage but haven't started since I haven't finished 99.9 Criminal lawyer, I need to find the time or just eat candy (the grape flavor)
Just you is cute and that's all I am going to say. The plot is not that convincing but Aaron and Puff Guo just looked so adorable and it just fun to see them together to overcome Aaron own law about office romance, hahaha
Just you was my introduction to the hotness that is Aaron Yan. And I really adore Puff Guo and him together.
I tried to watch his next drama Fall in Love with Me but I couldn't get past Tia Li's emotionless face despite everyone saying it was a great performance on Aaron's part.
I think I dropped FILME in the middle of it, I like Aaron but it seems like the story just not enough, it's cute but Just you is cuter and I agree that the female counterpart is a bit lacking,
many T-drama can be really cute and it's obvious that it's the goal,
again, I agree, Aaron is a hot mess , despite knowing him before, I just realize that he is really attractive lately
Fall in Love with Me was my first Asian drama ever. I loved Aaron in it--he was the only reason I finished watching the show. It started off really cute, but in the middle it became the most frustrating, illogical train wreck I have ever seen. Tia Li's blank stare was also very annoying. I like Aaron, he's a hottie and did well with the ridiculous story he was given, but I'm almost a little scared to try Just You because Fall in Love with Me scarred me for Taiwanese dramas, ha!
I watched both - ok, I dropped fall in love with me when they the plot to neverwhere. just you is lovely and absolutely less stressful. loved the girl.
Oh do try Just You. It's MUCH better than FILWY. Puff Guo can act and the BTS scenes with her and aaron were cuter than the show. I actually shipped them to get together then. I still habour hope in a tiny part of my heart that they will get together in real life. Lol.
Ahhh... Dean and Puff and Aaron...
Perhaps I should give "Happy Marriage" a try.
Only 3 episodes are out so far I think... I have only seen 2 subbed... And I don't know how long it's going to be so... It's a little angonising to wait. I actually think the female lead acts better than Dean though.
But yeah I can still hear Puff's voice calling out "Dean!" in that cute way of hers. Funny how they made his name same as his in real life. That show was my crack at one point.
I'm here! And my keyboard is fixed, though after a week, reaching for the v key instead of w was almost a reflex (it's also nice to be able to type the letter 'a' again, instead of copy-pasting it). And yeah, this week could have used some laughs too - it was Brexit last week, now those poor people in Istanbul. Our world has gone mad :(
If you're into jdramas, have you tried Hanzawa Naoki? It is AWESOME. Which is not the word that first comes to mind when one hears of its setting/main character's occupation (banker) but it's so so SO GOOD. And if you're into fantasy, definitely dry xxxHolic - it's based on one of my favourite mangas of all time and I had all manner of doubts beforehand about whether it was even possible to do justice to the manga, and it did it beautifully. The aesthetics are absolutely A++, which is incredible considering how stylised the xxxHolic manga was.
let's cheers for xxxHolic couple, Higashide and Anne, love them together
@pogo I'm still not over 'date'...and taniguchi sun...Can't start watching kdramas again either. So dear girls kindly suggest me some more jdramas...quirky,offbeat ones are preferred, :|...
Also I'm stuck in a place while travelling..and on limited net data :/.So hope you guys recommend some nice, fluffy but witty fictions...romance is not totally unacceptable either lol.
I feel you. I also travel a lot and have limited time to watch drama that's why jdorama suit me well, while I'm stuck only read recaps for kdrama.
Here's jdorama that gave me a good laugh:
- You said you've watched Date? have you watched the SP?
- Love Shuffle, the premise: relationship is based on compatibility so let's switch partner each week to test it. not your typical romcom, love the interaction between characters. I wish I have flatmate like them (their pajama party! and Tara-chan!)
-Okitegami Kyoko, it's '50 First Date' detective version. their so cute together. I'm not into Masaki Okada, but Yakusuke is sweet.
-Meitantei no Okite, a drama which make fun of detective drama. it's funny if you already familiar with typical japanese detective drama like Det.Conan or Kendaichi.
-Galileo, genius physic professor solving case. More like spent the whole drama to drool over Masaya.
-Hotaru no Hikari, the himono onna, woman who laid back at home. I can relate to her, except I don't have Fujiki Naohito in my office.
-Osen, japanese food porn! don't watch it with empty stomach. about a young woman (sweet Yu Aoi) who run a traditional japanese restaurant.
what I like about jdorama is when I have really limited drama time, I can watch watch their 20min tanpatsu or renzoku drama format, which is not only short in duration but also each eps stand on it's own so I don't need to watch all eps or watch in order. Often each eps has different story and cast so I can just watch eps with my favorite actor or actress.
-Propose Kyodai, 4 eps love story of men according to their birth order; 1st child (selfless), 2nd child (less confident), 3rd child (spoiled brat), and only child (has his own world).
-Ketsuekigata-betsu Onna ga Kekkon suru Hoho, propose kyodai female version but this time according to their bloodtype; A (reserved), B (arogant), O (happy-lucky-girl), and AB (sharp).
-Shinya Shukudo, 3 seasons, korea remade it as midnight dinner, heartwarming story about different restaurant costumer and nice tips&trick on some simple japanese dish.
-Loss Time Life, life drama about having second chance granted for death person.
Well, I watch more jdorama than kdrama so this list can go on. And mostly I prefer slice of live or dark theme drama since its jdorama forte.
Yay for fixed keyboard!
Yes I agree the world has gone mad. Which is why I'm immersing myself in dramas, much happier, where usually the bad guy gets his just desserts and good triumphs over evil.
And I'm super frustrated because my local libraries don't have Wee Free Men! They only have the audio book ? I can't sit through 3 hours of someone reading it out loud. I just cannot. And I realise bookstores are a lot less common now and don't always have what you want. ?
oop, I replied but it looks like the spam filter ate my comment - my keyboard is all fixed now :) I'm glad everyone got a laugh out of it last week though, I suppose we could do with some this week as well after Istanbul.
(and if you're into jdramas, you should definitely try Hanzawa Naoki!)
Same here. IMO, last drama season really sucked, this season I am overloaded. Which is good because it is too freaking hot to go outside.
You are not alone on Police Unit 38. Going in I thought it would be more like a mix of "White Collar" & "Leverage", with a different "caper" each week, but instead we just have this one long con. I'd prefer having different "capers" each week myself. Hopefully, the pace will pick up this week.
I feel you @ PU38. I love Seo In Guk and I'll watch the hell out of this drama but I wish we had some payoffs, some successes... But seems like we'll have one evil dude for some time.
I keep seeing 99.9 here and there on DB, and I think I might check it out. Jdramas are so hard to find... But they do solid police/detective dramas.. Last year (or the year before?) Oguri Shun's drama was interesting too.
OHYA finally ended, I did not enjoy the last 4 eps as much, I was just going through the motions watching, so it is quite a relief that it has ended. As for Beautiful Gong Shim, while the cute interactions between DT & GS are back with a vengeance in the last 2 eps, all that’s left is for Dan Tae’s real identity to be out in the open and for him to reclaim whatever he is entitled to. Of course how GS reacts to this when it is revealed to her, and will JS be able to conquer his complex emotions and be magnanimous enough to gracefully accept DT as family, will be crucial in determining whether the drama will make it or break it.
I’ve started to watch Dear My Friends and I never regretted it. I only realized it is a Noh Hee-kyung drama after watching it, I would have watched it much earlier if I had known earlier. The first NHJ drama I had watched is Did We Really Love? Though I did quite like the two leads, Bae Yong-joong (i.e Joon-Sang in WLS) and the young and pretty but slight chubby Kim Hye-Soo, what attracted me most were the wise and waggish conversations, the focus on “euri”, family obligations and friendships. All these could be felt in DMF, indeed, after watching all those rom-coms, I really relish DMF’s slice of life. So far, I’ve only finished 6 eps, I’m so infuriated by Park Wan as I do not quite understand why it is so hard for her to accept a wheelchair bound boyfriend given that they are so deeply in love? It is not like Yeon-ha could not take care of himself, and she is a freelancer who works from home anyway, it would be quite convenient for her to spend time with YH. So why does she jilted him and then went to act pathetic in-front of a married man and indulged in that half-hearted relationship in an attempt to forget about YH? Her behaviour is so exasperating to watch!!
Just want to talk about a scene in DMF in which an ajumma (Hee-ja) confessed to a pastor about being guilty of killing someone in a hit-and-run accident. The young pastor seemed at a loss about how to handle this matter, later on, he divulged it to another church regular ahjussi who happened to be a lawyer. I was wondering, what is the social obligation of a pastor? Is divulging a confession the right to do when it involves breaking the law?
I’ve also started to watch Doctors. I like the gutsy Park Shin-hye, though it took a while for me to get used to her fringe, it kind of looks weird on her. Her gangster like behaviour in high school is a stark contrast to her roles in previous projects. I think I will continue to watch this drama though I do not like watching medical dramas.
Have a great weekend all! :)
Dear My Friends is like that rich layered chocolate cake that you eat but know you'll regret even though its perfect (so many tears from me...I get dehydrated).
I actually like Doctor's now that it has moved past the creepy high school stuff. Although I'm hoping for more side stories and less weird fighting scenes...
Yum! Rich layered chocolate cake is perfect for me.. I don't mind the tears, it is really a very humane drama. Through it, I came to understand the mindset of the seniors, it also made me reflect on my behaviour towards my own mom when I was younger, I was quite inconsiderate at times just like Park Wan. How I wish I could be more affectionate towards her, like Hee-ja's filial son. It is through crying for the characters and shedding tears of regret that I recollect all the good things about my mom...
I am also enjoying Doctor's a lot more now that they are All Adults. The student-teacher thing was a bit so I am just pretending that part of the back story was wiped from my memory. That way I can enjoy the cuteness that is Kim Rae-Won.
Side note: My Little Bride was my gateway into the world of Korean Dramas! I think I saw it in 2006 and after that I started watching every K-Movie I could get my hands on and Then I Moved on to DRAMAS! Has it really been ten years?
You make me feel like Dear My Friends is something I really should check out! But only when I have no where to go the next day so I don't have swollen puffy eyes from all the crying... I cry at the drop of a hat so i'll probably drown before I'm even half way done.
If you do pick this up, I strongly advice to NOT marathon it, don't think any heart can take this. 2 episodes is the most I can shoulder at a time, then I need to go watch something fluffy (thank goodness there's BGM on the weekends as well)
Definitely not a marathon drama. Each set of episodes should be savored.
I don't think I would've survived last episode of DMF if there weren't PU38 and GongShim to laugh afterwards.
I feel bad for dropping it because it was too much for me but now i really want to watch it again. But...i can not marathon it . I think it isnt a drama for me at all. I couldn't live watch it so how am i supposed to marathon it? But it is a great drama. Maybe I'll have to find a cute hilarious drama to watch with it.
Oh you'll figure out in the later episodes why Park Wan is the way she is and why she made that decision. What I really love about DmF is the fact that nothing is as it seems and how extremely layered every single character is. The people I hated in one episode made me cry and feel sorry for them in the next, characters I didn't care for at all became a favorite... Sigh, the power of NHK's writing.
Re: Wan and her reasons why she left Yeon-ha will be revealed soon! I've always sympathized with the characters and learned not to hate them so much (yes, even Suk-gyun), and know that there are layers to them than presented. Noh Hee kyung's writing really shines through these veteran actors, and I learned to savor the moments of this drama as it unfolds.
The story will get heavier as the episodes go on, but I feel the show does a great job balancing the serious and the light and funny. I watched ep 13 last night and cried, prepping my tissues tonight for episode 14, and on Monday when the final episodes come out on DF.
Side note - It trips me out to see Jang Hyun-sung be this adorable on here, when he totally made me so upset and made me throw things in Signal (as Captain Kim Bum-joo). Also, how much do I love Choong-Nam (Yoon Yeo jung)? I screen-capped her smart-assery lines on my phone!
Thanks Angieya & Mashimomo for the heads-up, now I'm filled with much anticipation, will sure savor each and every new development in the drama. NHK's writing always never fails to deliver pleasant surprises to the viewers. Fully agree, the veteran actors had put up a superb performance. I like Youn Yuh-jung too, she has the knack of delivering the punch line in the most blasé manner. Also, I love the scene with petite Kim Young-ok riding a tractor, what a sight! She is such an endearing old lady. :)
OMG I feel you with the Jang Hyun-sung disconnect. He's doing it right now in Doctors too. @[email protected]
Oh wow, I guess another reason to check out Doctors then. My drama plate is getting filled up this season! Although not sure if I should start Doctors or Beautiful Mind, or start both of them - good luck to me! Ugh so much dramas yet so little time.
Truth be told, Beautiful Mind hurts my brain and I haven't decided yet whether in a good or bad way which I blame the writing. :-P
Doctors is a lot more straightforward I think.
But I think both are worth checking out since they're completely different genre despite being about neurosurgeons (which is the only feature both share).
Hi Everyone! ....... I hope you are all doing well today!
To all of those in the U.S. have a great 4th of July on Monday!
Sighting of the week --- I saw a young guy totally dressed like Ahn Dan-tae, in capri sweats and flip-flops, while out shopping! It was quite interesting.
Watched this week:
Beautiful Gong-shim - I seriously love watching every single episode of this.
Master God of Noodle - So many twists and turns!
Entertainer - What happened to Ha-neul's brother is truly sad and tragic. Glad to see what happened in ep 16.
Beautiful Mind - Saw parts of the first 4 episodes. ....... I don't know though. While not awful, it didn't completely win me over.
That's all for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!
lol on sighting. I think it is actually common look for many people. My brother-in-law (who is medical school professor) has totally that look during his day off.
On God of Noodle - that is one of drama I was really disappointed. It just had too many people and plot moved too slow. Too bad because it had great actors and filmed nicely. I read Chun Jung-myung(Moo Myung) voiced his complaints (He wished the show to be half good as the original work) which I totally agree.
I might watch the finale of Master of Godly Noodles. I feared a kneejerk tragic ending for our good boy turned released prisoner with no hope. And I hate kneejerk tragedy. Will see.
Have a great holiday weekend.
I'm hooked on to beautiful minds despite some very obvious flaws. Need Some improvements in writing and the female lead - and this could be a solid drama
I can't believe i'm saying it but i think i'm going to drop squad 38 - *wails* - the scam in episode 3 was so ridiculous that it had me rolling my eyes. I still can't seem to muster enough enthusiasm for Ep 4 despite SIG *wails again*
Doctors is .... Iffy .... i'll give it another week. Its got all these cute, swoony, sassy moments - but i'm not sure if they fit the situation. its too much of overt manipulation(?) of the viewer. *cough*DOTS*cough*
I finally, finally stated Six flying dragons - i hate 50 episoders with a vengeance. I could not even get through empress ki ... but fingers crossed since this is the drama of the year
Empress Ki was slow paced and boring, Six Flying Dragons is so much better!
Really ? You are the first person (besides me) who has not sung praises of Empress Ki.
I watched it after healer (JCW - swoon!) ... but I dropped it midway.
Its so strange that i cannot get through 50 episodes of Kdramas. I have watched american tv that runs into 7-10 seasons
.. Tv in my country has shows running for like 1000 episodes! I think the longest running one we have is over 2500 episodes and still going strong. I stopped watching that rubbish years ago and lost my 'ability to persevere in times of adversity' with it :)
I'm still in disbelief that Empress Ki was so well-received because most of the time so little happens in each episode. I couldn't really take the politics seriously, but I wasn't convinced by the romance part either. SFD is different. There isn't a single filler episode, every small detail has a greater meaning in the grand scheme of things which will be revealed a few episodes later. I really think the writers are amazing. They know a 50-episode drama is long and some people may lose interest halfway through, so they make sure there is a major climax every 5 episodes or so eg epic battle, important earth-shattering revelations and so on. I was apprehensive of the length but in the end I got so hooked. Like what korfan says, it makes you dread the end of it because it's that good.
Do you know.. India is almost the only country to follow this format for drama series..
otherwise everywhere else, its always about a fixed storyline
But then tv as a medium became strong only post 2000. Post the stabilization age, I think now all mediums are trying to get innovative.. with season concept and fixed story concept coming in..
Strangely before 2000 and the the ekta wave, there were actually very progressive shows ... post 2000, the production values shot up, the quality went down... After 3 months every show is interchangeable with the other following the same kitchen-politics storyline ... sadly, fixed storyline shows are not getting the ratings to herald a change
Well it's not your fault, Empress Ki certainly had many issues, flaws and plot holes. I watched it for JCW and HJW only. Didn't really care with the politics and other side issues.
IMO, EK started out great, but then after 20 eps it went downhill and never resurrected. Although the last couple of eps was slightly better than the middle part. Somehow through the midday it became repetitive.
I still enjoy watching the show and adore it, but the show is not without faults and you'd need patient and perseverance to finish it.
I thought Empress Kim is like too many saeguk introduction but idk why it still boring to me too, it's not as intense as saeguk usually be and not as cheesy as usual romance drama.
I think it has a very emotional "love triangle" despite the unbelievable plot imo and this weird inaccuracy of history, I swear too many ship in that drama and that's all I can remember,
Months after Six Flying Dragons ended, I'm still lamenting that it was only 50 episodes----it was that good. Well, at least I thought so.
I hope you enjoy it as much as many of us here did. Happy viewing!
I saw that Jeong Do Jeon is subbed . That's 50 episodes as well. Jo Jae Hyun as Sambong, Jeong Do-jeon.
Really, John? And it's available? I'd been hoping for that for quite awhile but couldn't find more than the first episode with subs when I checked a few months ago.
I found it at dramacool.
I also found it subbed at OnDemandKorea and Dramanice. OnDemandKorea has English subs and Chinese subs.
I believe the subtitles were added a month ago. They're quite new.
