My Sassy Girl’s original leading actress rumored to quit, role still not cast
Wow, this show is a mess behind the scenes. At this point I’m just rubbernecking, but sometimes you can’t look away when there’s a five-car pileup happening right in front of you, you know? The upcoming SBS youth sageuk adaptation of My Sassy Girl is STILL without a titular sassy girl… even though there’s going to be a script reading today, on August 22. They just don’t know (or won’t say) who’s going to be in attendance, because while Oh Yeon-seo (Come Back, Ajusshi) is likely to star, no one’s been officially confirmed for the leading role. On top of that, original leading actress Kim Joo-hyun is rumored to have quit the production altogether, but again producers are remaining tight-lipped about their official stance on her role in the drama, and whether she will or will not be present at the script read.
The drama adaptation of My Sassy Girl signed lead actor Joo-won (Yong-pal) early on, and then launched a massively publicized open audition to find their next sassy girl. Rookie actress Kim Joo-hyun earned the part after many rounds of competition against 1,800 other hopefuls, but then earlier this month, it was announced that Oh Yeon-seo was being courted to headline instead, and that Kim Joo-hyun would be given the second lead role.
One source states that SBS was behind the push to cast a known actress because they felt the risk was too high to go with an unknown, and that they quietly began the search for a bigger star without ever notifying Kim Joo-hyun. She was reportedly shocked to be demoted to the second lead, and in the end she chose to quit the drama entirely. It’s an understandable reaction if you ask me.
Meanwhile Oh Yeon-seo is reportedly confirmed to star, but only in secret, because SBS is under criticism for making that whole open audition process utterly pointless. So she is not due to attend the show’s first script read, despite being cast as the friggin’ title character of the drama, because she’s not officially the lead actress yet. What?
And then to make matters even more confusing, the production and SBS insist that “nothing has been decided” about either Kim Joo-hyun or Oh Yeon-seo, and that casting for the lead character is still up in the air. I… don’t know that it’s better for you to admit that you don’t know who’s going to star in your drama, the one that’s holding a script reading today. But what do I know?
The youth sageuk adaptation will be about a a sassy troublemaker princess who meets a beautiful scholar, and is set to co-star Lee Jung-shin (Cinderella and the Four Knights), Jung Da-bin (Flower in Prison), Jung Woong-in (Monster), Sohn Chang-min (My Daughter Geum Sa-wol), and Lee Shi-un (W—Two Worlds).
Shooting will begin in September (will it though?) and the drama will air in 2017.
