Shopping King Louis: Episode 5

Louis’s memories, both forgotten and remembered, continue to plague him as he tries to piece together his shattered past. And Bok-shil is busy trying to make a career for herself, though neither of them lets their problems stop them from having fun when they get the chance. But they don’t realize that there are big players circling around them like sharks, growing ever closer, and sooner or later someone’s going to get bitten.

EPISODE 5: “Starry, Starry Night”

Louis stays up all night nursing Bok-shil while she’s sick, running through the rain to get medicine and putting cool cloths on her forehead. Bok-shil has feverish dreams, remembering the night her parents died in a car accident, and how she’d shielded little Bok-nam’s eyes as their grandmother wailed over their parents’ bodies.

In the morning, Bok-shil wakes to see Louis sleeping by her side on the cold floor, and she covers him with a blanket. She thinks to herself that she was scared all night, but Louis protected her.

She goes to work, but Joong-won sees her clutching her still-aching head and tells her sternly to go home and rest. When she says she took medicine, he takes that as proof she’s sick, and yells at her to get out. Heh, overreact much?

Louis is worried when he wakes and Bok-shil is gone, so he goes to the Gold Group building looking for her. Just as Director Baek gets the call that the person who died in the car crash wasn’t Louis, he sees the real Louis standing in front of him, and he freezes in shock.

Director Baek looks like he wants to scream, as Louis walks right up to him, bows, and says a cheerful hello. But Bok-shil walks out of the elevator just then, and Louis runs over to her — he didn’t recognize Director Baek at all.

He pulls Bok-shil over to Baek, who he knows from the television interview is the CEO of the company. Bok-shil is mortified and steers Louis out of there, while he waves an innocent goodbye.

Louis takes Bok-shil’s hand as if it’s no big deal, though it looks like it’s a very big deal to her. They walk past Bok-shil’s teammate Hye-joo in the lobby, who immediately clocks their entwined hands and asks who Louis is. Bok-shil tries to pull her hand away, but Louis holds it tighter and says he’s her guardian. Hye-joo runs squealing back to the office to report that Bok-shil has a beau, and Joong-won frowns.

Director Baek meets with his scar-faced minion and tells him that he saw Louis, who didn’t recognize him. Baek gives Scarface Bok-shil’s information and instructs him to keep an eye on her — he suspects Joong-won of knowing something, since he hired Bok-shil right after Louis’s funeral.

Still weak from her illness, Bok-shil has trouble climbing the stairs to their apartment, so Louis offers to piggyback her. She refuses, embarrassed, but he yanks her onto his back and proceeds to climb the stairs as slowly as possible, hee.

He teases that she’s heavy, then honestly says that he’s never felt this strange before. “My body feels heavy and tired, but my heart feels hot.” Whoa there, big fella. Bok-shil smiles and nestles into his neck, and Louis continues on with renewed energy.

He’s in the doghouse again when they get inside, and Bok-shil sees the mess Louis left. He’s sheepish, but wants Bok-shil to eat the porridge he brought for her before cleaning, and they argue over which to do first. The argument gets a little physical, and Louis ends up splashing the hot porridge all over himself.

He quickly strips to avoid getting burned, while Bok-shil tries to wipe the scalding porridge off of him. Of course that’s the exact moment when Joong-won lets himself in, here to check up on Bok-shil, and ends up walking into what looks like a hot-and-heavy moment between lovers.

He makes Louis dress and kicks him out, and Louis slumps downstairs to In-sung’s place to pout. In-sung’s mom knows Joong-won from when Bok-shil passed out and she met him at the hospital, which is news to Louis. They wonder if Joong-won likes Bok-shil, and Louis looks a little frantic at the idea.

Scarface is watching as instructed, and he reports back to Director Baek that Joong-won just came to see Bok-shil. Baek wonders what Joong-won is up to with Bok-shil and Louis — it does look bad from his angle.

Joong-won demands to know if Bok-shil and Louis are living together, which she confirms. She fills Joong-won in on Louis’s situation and how she’s helping him until he gets his memory back, so that he can help her find her brother.

Joong-won thinks she’s crazy, but she innocently wonders what’s so bad about a man and a woman living together. She assures Joong-won that Louis is a good person, and says she feels sorry for him.

Unable to convince Bok-shil, Joong-won talks to Louis next, and tells him to come live with him. Louis hilariously assumes that Joong-won likes him and gently lets him down, saying that Joong-won isn’t his type. He cracks his back and complains that he didn’t sleep all night, making Joong-won wonder what he did all last night, pfft.

Joong-won tries one last time by telling Louis how huge his place is, even offering him the room with an attached bathroom and free access to the refrigerator. Louis just tells Joong-won not to brag, and heads home to Bok-shil.

Joong-won ends up stewing in his car, frustrated beyond belief but also thinking that Louis looks very familiar. But he can’t recall where he’s seen him other than at the Gold Group building.

Louis’s grandma talks to his portrait as if it’s Louis, and her assistant Jung-ran offers to get him a brand-new gold frame. Butler Kim thinks a platinum frame crusted with diamonds would be more suitable, and Grandma agrees while Jung-ran oh-so-politely invites Butler Kim to the beach for a chat. Uh oh.

HAHA, Jung-ran looks like a gangster as she menaces Butler Kim on the beach, telling him to remember his place. Everything he says in his own defense is taken as insult by Jung-ran, and Kim resigns himself to the beating he’s about to get. Jung-ran comes at him with a heavy stick and a primal scream, and Butler Kim flees in terror.

In-sung thinks Louis is nuts for turning down Joong-won’s offer to live with him, and tells him that it’s not that Joong-won wanted Louis to live at this place — he just wants him out of Bok-shil’s place. Joong-won likes Bok-shil, and Louis’s presence is a threat to him. But Louis has no intention of leaving Bok-shil’s side.

Scarface approaches In-sung’s mom, asking for an introduction to the couple who live in the rooftop apartment. She refuses until he passes her an envelope stuffed full of cash, then she spills everything she knows.

Scarface takes the info back to Director Baek, and tells him about Louis’s memory loss and how he came to live with Bok-shil. Baek wonders who died in the crash, but tells Scarface not to bother looking into it.

That night Louis tells Bok-shil about Joong-won’s offer to live with him, and that In-sung says it’s because Joong-won likes her. Bok-shil denies it, but Louis says that even if Joong-won does like her, she can’t like him back, because it would make him sad. Awww, sweet puppy.

Bok-shil grins though, and says that she can’t make him feel sad when he protected her all last night. She tells Louis that she’s scared of thunder and lightning, because it was a thunderstorm that caused the landslide that killed her parents. Since then, whenever it storms, she feels sick.

Louis leans across the curtain barrier to take Bok-shil’s hand comfortingly. She says she’s better now, and that he’s her last lead to find her only remaining family member. Louis promises again to help her find her brother, and they lay down to sleep.

Louis lies down facing Bok-shil, and opens the curtain just enough to watch her face while she sleeps.

Joong-won has panda-eyes the next morning from thinking about Bok-shil and Louis all night. He pictures them snuggled up under the same blanket, and shudders in horror.

The moment Bok-shil gets to work, Joong-won informs her that she’s going on a business trip to Busan with him and Ma-ri. Ma-ri is distinctly un-pleased, having planned to make Joong-won fall for her on this trip, and glares daggers at Joong-won.

Bok-shil texts Louis to tell him she won’t be home tonight, and Louis freaks out about her going on a trip with Joong-won. In-sung wonders if it’s a date in disguise, which does nothing to calm Louis, and he decides they’re going to Busan, too.

Scarface sees them leaving and calls Director Baek. Knowing that Grandma lives in Busan, Director Baek worries that Joong-won is going down there to meet with her. Wow, he’s super paranoid.

Bok-shil is enchanted by her first glimpse of the ocean, which makes Joong-won smile and Ma-ri look sour. Joong-won tells Bok-shil to go wait for him at the beach while he and Ma-ri go to their meeting, and he has no good answer when Ma-ri asks why he even brought her. Hee.

Butler Kim is sporting a brand-new shiner, and he looks scared when Jung-ran enters the room. She’s just bringing him a cold egg to put on his bruise, and we see that she didn’t give him that black eye — he fell on the beach and hit his face on a rock. She scoffs that she doesn’t hit people…. anymore.

Bok-shil finds a pretty balcony overlooking the sea, and marvels at its beauty. She gets a call from Louis asking where she is, and she turns to ask a nearby woman. Coincidentally, it just happens to be Grandma, there on a walk with Jung-ran.

Bok-shil hangs up, and Grandma asks about her friend. Bok-shil says he doesn’t know how to do anything but spend money, and Grandma laughs, but she says that at least he stays and tries to do what Bok-shil asks.

She says that her grandson loved to shop, and sighs, “I miss you, my precious.” Bok-shil asks where her grandson is, and Grandma says sadly that she sent him away to keep him safe, but then he went even further away.

Butler Kim goes online for a pair of sunglasses to cover his shiner, and he sees a review on one pair by someone calling themselves Shopping King Louis. The review says he’d buy the sunglasses “a million times,” which is a phrase Louis used to use a lot, and it gives Butler Kim pause.

He’s distracted by a call from Director Baek, who wants to know why Grandma isn’t answering her phone. It looks like Baek is on his way to Busan as well, and Butler Kim tells him which hotel she’s near, which is the same hotel he knows Joong-won is staying at.

Louis and In-sung arrive at the hotel, and Louis thinks it feels familiar. He tries his hardest, but he can’t remember anything specific.

Director Baek finds Grandma at the hotel, and he looks surprised and alarmed to see her talking to Bok-shil. He rushes Grandma away from her, just as Louis finds Bok-shil and calls out her name. Grandma recognizes his voice, but Director Baek blocks her from taking another look back.

Louis finds Bok-shil and immediately forbids her to cook for anyone but him (HA, In-sung asks if that was a confession or abuse). Louis just demands food and stalks off, smiling secretly, and Bok-shil and In-sung trail after him.

Ma-ri’s mom Jae-sook and Joong-won’s mom Young-ae run into each other at the mall, both wearing the same jacket. They have tea, bonding over their love of the same fashion blog, and become instant friends.

Since everyone is in Busan, Joong-won is roped into having an incredibly awkward meal with Grandma, Director Baek, and Ma-ri. Joong-won texts Bok-shil hoping for a rescue, but she says she’s having a great time and not to worry about her. HA, Joong-won’s face.

Grandma talks Joong-won into having a drink, and his face goes beet-red and he passes out right there on the table. Nobody seems one bit concerned, since this happens every time he drinks.

Butler Kim finds the group to tell them that he’s found someone posting as Shopping King Louis on the internet. He says the person’s “voice” even sounds like Louis, and Ma-ri mentions that her team has seen the posts as well, but Director Baek snaps that it’s cruel to get Grandma’s hopes up this way.

Director Baek speaks to Jung-ran privately, building her up as Grandma’s right hand and putting a bug in her ear about Butler Kim being a problem. He mentions something else, but we don’t hear what he says.

Ma-ri gets to spend her alone time with Joong-won, though he’s still passed out on the bar, ha. She answers his phone when Bok-shil calls, and she tells Bok-shil that Joong-won is too busy to talk and orders her back to Seoul.

Bok-shil, Louis, and In-sung have a great time playing in Busan, shopping in the busy markets and acting like silly kids together. They take goofy selcas in front of the ocean, Louis and Bok-shil giggling like children when they scoot in close for a picture, then sit in the sand to enjoy the view.

Bok-shil asks Louis if he’s ever seen the sea before, then seems to realize that her question might upset him. But Louis laughs and says of course he has, and that this view looks familiar. In-sung asks if Louis could have lived in Busan, and Louis denies the possibility — in a heavy Busan accent. Well, that’s a pretty big clue.

Bok-shil smiles, enjoying the sea air, and Louis gets this soft, adoring look in his eyes as he watches her. In-sung leaves to find a restroom, leaving the two alone on the beach.

A woman calls out to her little boy, Ji-sung, and the sound of his own forgotten name triggers a memory in Louis. He sees a flash of himself as a child, playing on the beach with his parents when they were still alive. He clutches his suddenly-pounding head, and jumps up to follow the family on the beach.

He sees more flashes — a car hitting him then driving away, someone punching him, a little boy playing with a dog named Koboshi. He collapses in the sand and Bok-shil rushes to him, and he’s able to shake off the memories and sit up weakly.

Louis stares at Bok-shil searchingly while she gently brushes the sand off his face. Bok-shil pulls him into a hug, crying that she was scared, and Louis hugs her back. He thinks that his scary, dark night was brightened by Bok-shil, and a tear rolls down his face.

Bok-shil starts to pull away, but Louis hugs her even tighter. He tucks his face into her neck and holds Bok-shil like she’s his only lifeline.

Back in Seoul, Bok-shil calls the team together to tell them that she has a presentation to make up for the one she couldn’t make before (when Ma-ri stole her water bottle idea). She tells them about her night in Busan, which gave her the idea to put together a tour package based on her experiences.

Ma-ri pokes holes in her idea, saying that tour packages like this already exist. Joong-won agrees, and Bok-shil wilts, until he points out that her package is based on her personal sensibilities, which should appeal to their customers.

Her approach is in line with the current trends, and Joong-won commends her on her idea. Not only that, but he announces that he’s extending Bok-shil’s contract from one month, to one year.

Ma-ri chases Joong-won down to criticize his decision to hire Bok-shil. But Joong-won says that Bok-shil has an instinct for creating innovative stories — even for water bottles. Oh, burn.

Bok-shil meets with Joong-won to thank him formally for extending her contract, and he tells her to do her best so she can be hired permanently. She runs home to give Louis the good news, and they bounce happily in the street like kids. In-sung joins them, just as thrilled for Bok-shil — I just love these three.

They go out to celebrate, though there’s an odd moment when Bok-shil looks upset. But she shakes it off and flashes her shiny new credit card, and In-sung snatches it back when Louis makes a grab for it, ha.

In-sung suggests they all get their hair done, and takes them to a stylist he knows. Her specialty is doing hair based on people’s names, which has her giving Louis a weird curly perm (to look like King Louis), and Bok-shil ends up with a wild, bushy mane like a poodle. Holy moly, they look awful.

Butler Kim makes a secret call to someone, and tells them that he hasn’t found Louis yet. Something about this feels wrong. Oh no, Butler Kim, don’t be a bad guy!

A hooded figure breaks into Louis and Bok-shil’s apartment, looking for something. He goes through their drawers, and takes out a hammer.

In-sung heads home to his mom, who tells him his new hairdo is hideous. She fusses at him for hanging out with Louis, ans he tells her that the “company” he works for (Bok-shil) just landed a new client (Bok-shil’s Seoul accent lessons).

Mom double-checks that In-sung hasn’t told Louis and Bok-shil about “the incident,” and he says that of course he hasn’t. He thinks if Louis finds out, he’d run away.

Ma-ri pulls Bok-shil into the stairwell the next morning to ask if she told Joong-won about the Gold Line bottle. She scoffs when Bok-shil denies it, and loudly demands to know how he found out. Bok-shil keeps her calm and says again that she never told anyone, but Ma-ri gets even more upset when she lets slip that Joong-won came to her place.

Bok-shil’s new hair startles Joong-won when he sees it, then he chuckles as he watches her fluff her curls. Ma-ri sees the whole thing and gapes at his reaction, sure he was going to tell Bok-shil she looks unprofessional.

Louis heads to the mall with Bok-shil’s credit card to pick up a designer bag that’s been calling to him. He’s surprised to learn that he can make payments, and chooses the longest option. Sweet thing, I’m sure he thinks he’s making a good choice.

He buys Bok-shil new clothes and shoes, and gives her the furry new bag. Bok-shil stands in shock, then asks how much this all cost, then gingerly sets the bag down when she hears the price. She asks how Louis intends to pay for all this, and bans him from the house until he gets refunds for everything.

She means it too, and Louis stands outside in the dark, whining that he doesn’t know how to get a refund. Bok-shil carefully packs everything, and thinks about something Grandma said — that watching what someone buys can tell you a lot about the person and what they need. Bok-shil realizes that everything Louis purchased, he bought for her.

It takes Louis a long time to get up the nerve to enter the store and return the purse, but he finally gets it done. Good boy!

Scarface meets with Director Baek, who says that Grandma will transfer all of her company shares to Director Baek. He emphasizes that Scarface has to find Louis before that happens.

Louis takes Bok-shil all the money he collected in refunds, and asks cutely for a pat on the head. Bok-shil points out that he wouldn’t have had to do it if he hadn’t bought everything in the first place. Louis pouts that he just wanted to get her a gift, and she says she knows.

But instead of a gift, she asks Louis to take her to a movie — she’s never been to one. Louis thinks hard, and says he doesn’t think he’s been to one, either. Strange. Bok-shil sets up to straighten Louis’s hair (oh thank goodness), and he offers to do hers afterward. They smile at each other, back on good terms again.

Some time later, Bok-shil waits at a movie theater for Louis to arrive and make good on his promise. He’s at a flower shop, and he demonstrates his newfound shopping restraint by buying her just one, perfect rose with the change he has in his pocket.

Louis literally skips down the street, excited for his first actual date with Bok-shil. He crosses the street with the light, but a car comes out of nowhere, and Louis leaps back, losing his balance.

Bok-shil’s rose goes flying, and Louis hits his head on the pavement, hard.

COMMENTS

Damn the preemption! Now we’re supposed to wait a whole week to find out the aftereffects of Louis’s latest head wound? This is so not fair…

Things are really amping up in the family/politics part of the show, but my fears that it would take over the cuteness and sweetness of Bok-shil and Louis’s budding relationship are unfounded, so far. There’s just enough of Grandma and Director Baek to keep me interested in the looming power-play, but not so much that I get bored of it. The show balances the two sides of the plot pretty well so far, and while I know that eventually we’ll get more into the fight for control over Gold Group (and does anyone else suspect that it’s actually Butler Kim on the wrong side of things, and Director Baek is trying to make things right? Is it just me?), I’m counting on the writer not to dampen what makes the show such a fun watch — the basket full of puppies that is Bok-shil and Louis.

But first — I was all set to hate In-sung when we first met him (mostly because Oh Dae-hwan always plays villains, so I’m hardwired to expect him to betray someone at the first opportunity) but the more we learn about In-sung, the more I like him. Yeah, he’s lazy and takes advantage, but he’s a good guy at heart and I think he truly likes Louis and Bok-shil. Seeing the three of them tooling around the city just having fun and being silly was the best, and made me fall in love with them as a friendship trio. There have never been three more unlikely friends, but together they make a pretty great team.

I just love and adore Louis’s complete and total lack of self-consciousness, the way he says exactly what he’s thinking and feeling at any given time. When he said that carrying Bok-shil makes his heart feel hot, I nearly melted on the spot. He’s not too shy to say that he likes Bok-shil, and that he’d be sad if she liked someone else. He hasn’t clearly confessed yet, but he may as well have, and Bok-shil seems to know it. She likes him just as much as he likes her, but I appreciate that neither of them pushes things, and are just letting their relationship unfold naturally.

It was a small moment, but I think that Bok-shil’s realization that Louis bought everything for her was a pretty big revelation. Everything he purchased was bought with Bok-shil in mind, which gives a pretty big clue as to what’s going on with Louis. He may have Bok-shil as a friend, but he’s still reliant on her for almost everything, from the roof over his head to the food in his belly. For a man who remembers subconsciously that he’s always had anything he wanted, it’s no wonder that Louis is terrified to lose Bok-shil.

Aside from Louis’s growing feelings for Bok-shil, she’s literally all he has in the world. He’s all tangled up between love and dependency, and I think he’s falling back on what he knows, shopping, in an attempt to get Bok-shil to bond to him and stay with him. He doesn’t yet realize that that’s not how you get a person to love you. Lucky for him, I think Bok-shil’s feelings for Louis are exactly in line with his for her, but I’m proud of her for not letting him get away with his shopping sprees or his inability to care for himself. He doesn’t need coddling, he needs guidance and someone to show him how to stand on his own two feet, and Bok-shil is exactly the right person to do that for him.

If I didn’t know that Louis was already sweet and innocent before his accident, I’d be super upset right now at the prospect of him getting his memory back so soon. Lucky for us, his amnesia didn’t change his personality all that much, so I’m confident he’ll still be the adorable Louis we’ve all come to love, including and most especially Bok-shil. I’m more concerned that he’ll forget all that’s happened to him while he couldn’t remember his past.

that little girl looks sooo much like Bok shil/NJH it's amazing. ^^

I'm so in love with Bok shil and Louis. Both are just so so so likeable and sweet. And that makes it that I'm so in love with their love as well. How can something be so innocent and pure and warm and sweet. I'm so used to love being dramatic in dramas that this is jarring to the brain... but so good. Reminds me of characters in Sass go go/Cheer Up!

Also love the side characters. Flawed, but fun. I even like the villainess Mari. She's so unabashed in how bad she is that it has a comical tinge to it, unlike her father.

I was looking for the word 2 describe how I felt about their relationship and u've got it right. It's sweet. Also fresh. And organic.

..... So fruit-love? lol.

Of course I love SIG. But while NJH had me in WISFC, w/ this drama, I think she's becoming a top favorite of mine from her generation.

And I agree bout ur point on Ma-ri. I know ebd hates her, but I like her scenes (not her of course). I find them fun. there's something about her that's different from other b*tc** characters in other drama. Not sure what. I think it's like she likes being bad. Or finds it fun to be bad and scheming. So in a manner of speaking, I also find it fun to watch?

Point it. this drama is gold. too bad pple are sleeping on it. It's not even making the top list on viki. Sad for pple, but good for me. Hee.

Mari is a little paranoid. She and her father are both dangerous asteroids, who dont know the direction of their collision course. they have a pin-hole view of reality somehow and they don´t see where they are actually heading. They aren´t anticipating to be continuously derailed and it makes them funny rather than cliché. it is weird.

looool. fruit love. Hahaha. I heard of fruit smiles and faces before, but first time I heard of fruit love. kkkk.

is it me... or does NJH kinda reminds me of Kang Haneul? or some other actor? I feel like I've seen her face b4 in some other person.

loads of pple forward Mari's scenes. but I watch when in other dramas, I also fast-forward those scenes. didn't know the reason but ding ding ding. Nailed it. It's bc she seems to have a heck a lot of fun being bad.

shame about the low interest. oh well, i tend to just love dramas regardless of hype. don't worry much about it. people who watch it likes it. it's what matters!

Ohhh! That's where I've seen her! The child hood love for that drama was the only good thing about the drama. NJH and KHN are good there.

Totally agree! I stopped watching Angel Eyes when the adults took over, because the "kids" had ten times the intensity.

I don't know if it's just me, but she reminds me of Park Bo-gum! Especially that smileeeee ~~

LOL park bo gum?! Because of their tan skin and childlike smile?? She does has a beautiful smile though. I think I replay her parts just to see her smile.

I agree with you about NGH, she's fantastic. I hadn't really ever seen her except in Angel Eyes, where she shone. She is very natural and very skilled in her expressions...love it.

I came here so happy after watching the episode then checking the ratings, so am a little surprised to hear 'people are sleeping on it'. Clearly no drama is everyone's cup of tea, but I'm on international fan who is really enjoying it, but not watching on Viki. But the domestic ratings seem on a continued rise...even with the preemption, it's snagging 8.1 nationwide and 8.2 in Seoul on TNmS, and 8.4 and 9.1 on Neilson. That last number is not that far behind On the Way to the Airport at 9.9. I see SIG getting in wish for 10, and wouldn't be surprised at higher numbers.

Speaking of SIG, I'll reiterate a comment I heard someone make here when HSKOS was airing. That SIG has brought us ;another memorable character.; He is so good at pulling off these different genres and personas. Louis is very, very different from his other roles, but he's living him. He IS Louis. Such a talented guy who seems to work hard at making it look effortless.

I also love the sweetness of this show and the slow, organic way their relationship is developing. Here's for keeping this tone all the way through, without the angst of plots and company machinations overshadowing it.

That's potentially true. And if we can just breach that double digit mark by the 6th episode and its magic preview, we're up for good things. We're hitting the 6th episode and progress is moving so I'm curious what the remaining 10 episodes have with it. It's moving a lot faster than the usual k-drama-trope pace.

But the good news is SKL have decent buzz in online rating. Their CPI quite good despite the less promotion from MBC (comparing with their predecessor drama).

I like if the underdog drama have a lot of support and love from the audiences.

really? so happy 2 know that. cuz on tvcast.naver, all their clips have relatively low view compared 2 other dramas (like sometimes 10 times less view compared 2 moon lovers, moon clouds, jealousy incarnate). their clips never gets in the top 10 clips but the other dramas always manage 2 land on the top 5, if not top 1

I like that the fact that Louis is so "innocent" as u put it kinda makes him super effective in the romance department. I swear he's got more game and lines than lots of other romantic leads. lol.

And I like that Bok-shil is receiving all his "advances" without artifice. So refreshing.

hahaha. Louis definitely got game. Man, the number of times I swooned at his lines. It's even more effective because he doesn't mean them to be lines, or is saying them for the sake of BS or for BS to hear. He just says them because that's how he feels. 15+alpha times more romantic than usual "romantic lines." imo.

Sooo agree with you. The way SIG does with his eyes and lips everytime he emotes, gosh, such a feast to my eyes, not to say a strong distraction as I have to rewind first for his eyes, then second for his lips, third for the awww moment, then last is for the lines haha omg.

what I like about this drama is the child-like innocence permeating it. the vibe of the whole drama has a refreshing innocent youthful charm to it.

the animations, sound effects, and over-the-top funny scenes and stuff. And also the characters.

Boksil and Louie of course. But also other characters like Oska. He only knows how to be grumpy at work so he acts like a boy pulling pigtails w/ Boksil. And as you said. mari treats this whole inheritance getting rich business like a game. a bit like one of those queen bees at schools who do horrible things treating school like their playground where rules in real life and consequences in real life haven't hit them yet. So once they get out of school, they realize real life isn't their kingdom like school. And then even the adult characters grandma, mari's parents, grandma's butler and housekeeper, and jo in sung (hahahaha) and his mom, and oska's parents... they're all a bit or a lot immature, but in a somewhat childlike way.

Dunno if I'm making any sense. But imma go w/ this theory.

you're probably right. there's something super light or childlike/young like you said about SKL. even w/ the villains. I like it.

and that's not 2 say that young/innocent means less deep either. just refreshing, but still w/ all the feels and squee. hahaha.

this episode proved to me that even hough we DO have an evil uncle, he has got it all mixed up, it is like a villain off the rail with expectations and reality missing each other big time thanks to the irony of life, and it is like he aimed at Jupiter but hit Mars. I don´t know how to explain it. I guess that´s why it is a romantic COMEDY, but the absurdity and irony of the comic part is really cleverly done. and at the same time, the goddess of chance really favors Louie.

the show gives Louie blatant honesty but also how people miss the mark with their words and assumptions is hilarious.

Louie and Bok Shil could be the two last people on earth with no reserve for each other, or they could be newborn alien babies who have no clue. Period.

and yet the most touching part is not what they are saying, but what they are NOT saying.

I like the little easter egg-like bits we get like that Busan accent (ha, they sneaked it in!), and the Gu Jun Pyo hair. It is not spelled out, so if you are not good at taking hints, you miss it. and the hint comparing Bok Shil´s hair to a dog (!!!) and that Louie wrote on the forum he really wants to buy the glasses, but he won´t - aww, puppy is learning to be considerate!!!

I just want to see more of Louie talking to pretty handbags! That is so brilliant!

what can I do, he is really a sweet person, I love his sincerity, loyalty and ability to be in awe of the siomplest things. and I really love Bok-Shil for being so open and understanding and unconditional and compassionate.

Ur right. Louis is such a good person. I know he irritated some pple with his shopaholic and "inconsiderate" behavior... but I don't blame him for it. Or at least I don't consider his behavior as defining him as a character.

After all, all his life, his habit has been to let ebd else do the hard stuffs for him, even feeding him. He doesn't know anthg besides shopping and letting people do what he wants them to do. It's how his grandma wanted him to be raised. It's a habit that's ingrained in him in his subconscious, like other people's habits are. Difficult to break. I know too well (ah... resolutions I never manage to complete. Hee.)

ANW. But as a person, he's sooo kind. He just was never allowed to have an outlet for that kindness in the usual form other people have been allowed to have. XD

Like u said. Perfect match w/ Bok Shil. Bc she's so used taking care of others and being hard working, and having a little brother that she's not as irritated w/ Louis as others would be. Which allows her to see his sweet side. Not gonna lie. In real life, I would be so fed up w/ him, I would have no time to understand where he's coming from. XD

So so true. They really just say whatever comes to their mind.

Btw I didn't get how his Gu Jun Pyo hair is a hint. I mean yes- Gu Jun Pyo was a rich chaebol like Louie, but I thought here they were just making fun of that style and not referring to how one chaebol had that hairstyle in some old show. Though I might have missed the hint. I loved the Busan accent though. Every SIG show should utilize his satori. (38 Task Force anyone :P)

I also really find it funny that the premise is ripe for over-assumption from the uncle's perspective but really, he's just overthinking it and the drama's facts are so far off his fears. Hahahaha. Paranoid much. It's like this drama is making fun and poking at the over-the-top villainy machineries of other dramas. Funny how if this were just another drama the overthinking uncle would have been so on-point and viewers would have been wriggling in discomfort by now since the villain has caught up too soon.

Aww such a cute episode! And the car of doom made its appearance again! :P

And I dunno why but I started crying in the scene where Bok Shil tells Louie that he was her saviour because he stayed with her when she was scared of the thunderstorm and got sick. I mean it wasn't a really emotional scene but it really got me. And the same happened when Louie said that his scary, dark night was brightened by Bok Shil. These scenes just touched my heart <3

I love the trio! They are perfect together. And well, as has become a refrain for me (but I have to say it every time anyway)- SIG is just so adorable as Louie! I want my own Louie palliii. How does he think-up stuff like that? LOL.

In Sung Hyung and his mom is hilarious. Both actor and actress, of course SIG and NJH as well, nailed it hard with their antics. Seriously, I thought Korean can only make a great humour in Reply series. I'm so wrong. So happy that I have SKL.

I replayed that a lot. Hahahah. That scene is one of my favorites, next to the piggyback-ride/slash/toothpaste-commercial. Hahaha, the synchrony between Jo In Sung and his mom though and their facial expressions. Lol. Everything so fast, so funny, capped off by the laundry tantrum, and the best bit: the rubber glove. Hahahaha! It's totally that moment when two adults get wordlessly in sync in ganging up on teasing the innocent youngest. Haha. My siblings did that to my youngest self all the time when we were kids.

This so much even though some of the OTP moments are really squee worthy though, I'm glad I can understand why they come to care for each other and it makes it easier to support them and feel the chemistry.

I see many comments saying they enjoy this drama as a "fluff" drama. Nothing wrong w/ that at all.

I totally get why pple would call it fluff, like it's light and fun and hilarious. But the way it makes me feel is sooo far from fluffy. Contrary to all the comical scenes, I feel like there's some depth to the characters and drama. It's subtle, but it's there for me, like it's well-thought out "fluff" kind of.

Anyway. I just love BS & Louis and BSxLouis so much. Like I'm emotionally invested it's probably clouding my judgement. Like I can see why it's called fluff but I don't feel fluffy emotions for all the characters for sure. Fuzzies. Sure. I'm probably making no sense. lol

0

Required fields are marked *

hmm I think I understand what you mean. It's more than fluff because while louie and bokshil sweet moments are really fluff material, it's just because they act according to character. Louie who never has anyone like bokshil in his life obviously want to pour all his affection to her, and bokshil is the caring kind person can accept all this affection because she understand his situation.

I hundred percent agree! Although initially the characters read like stereotypes, each character seems to have a real believable quality. I love how Bokshil seems genuinely tom-boyish. Maybe it's her voice? Actually, as an actress, she deserves more credit. But, she makes this character INTERESTING. I also thank that the writer didn't make her a helpless/stupidly stubborn Candy character. She has nuances to her optimism!!! And Louis also has nuances to his optimism! It's so...interesting and layered.

Also, lol, I love how the writer subverted the mid-way makeover by totally giving a make under. Yet, making the hair incident so totally sweet, from Louis's little proud flounce that its after Louis the Fourteenth, Bokshil's little pouffing of her curls and the director's loving and amused smile, and Insung's mother-son exchange. LOVE the details and the build up of relationships and character!!!

Rather than tomboyish, I find her tough. She's quite feminine too actually. Very evident in this episode. I think her living in the mountains make her style very old compare to the city thus making her awkward and stuff. I can bet by ep 16 her style will be so so different like she'll adapt the city lifestyle.
(Well she needs to marry the chaebol louie too winkwink.lol jk)

0

Required fields are marked *

totally not fluff, but it is masked with sweetness very well so that superficial folks can´t see the layers beneath. I think the message is be genuine with each other, be open about why you are doing something or what you are afraid of. we are all influenced by each others choices and decisions and they morph who we are and how we behave. to keep being yourself but at the same time to also learn to live considering all the others is difficult.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think people consider it a fluff drama because the cuteness completely outweighs the seriousness of the main problem. I for one would be completely fine if Louis did not regain his rightful place since we know he has Bok Shil and they would be fine and happy together regardless.

One thing I love about this drama is they keep giving us one or two sweet moments every ep. Not too much and not too little either. Louie and Boksil is not even a couple yet we already been so blessed. We don't have to wait until last ep to get their lovey dovey moments.

Did anyone else notice the Kill Bill reference with Grandma's thug of an assistant? XD I thought it was so funny, especially after the Song Joong Ki and NJH references, I thought damn, they're branching out into Hollywood now hahaha

Really, I am loving this drama. I love how innocent it is and how uncomplicated their relationship is, actually, I'd say that is probably my favourite part of it, half of the other dramas get caught up in the miscommunication issues of the OTP, which inevitably leads to there break up, mid way through the program, but I really love how Bok Shil explains things to Louie, even when she's angry at him. (I really hope I'm not predicting something here, it occurs to me that we're not yet halfway =/)

I'm still on the fence with In Sung, I know that he is very supportive of them both but I really worry about how much money he is conning Bok Shil out of, $30 a day for handing out fliers and then how much for the Seoul accent lessons? Will he still be around if there is no money? What is this thing that he and his mother don't want Louie to know about? Could they have been involved in his accident at some stage?

One of the possible reasons for the low viewership on Viki could be the new Vikipass system. When I last checked, if you didn't have the VP, you couldn't watch any episode, which is a load of bs. I used to love Viki, when SWWTN was on, I'd watch the episode as soon as it was uploaded, as it is now, I go to dramalove or dramanice.

I'm really excited for next week now, obviously I was bummed about there only being 1 episode but I think it actually fit really well story wise, it's like the end of part 1-friendship going into part 2-something more (plus something more in plot 2).

In Sung and his mother don't want them to know about the multiple murders that took place in the apartment. That is the reason Bok Shil was able to move into the apartment without a deposit and his mother got a referral fee from the landlady. There was so much cuteness this episode. I keep being surprised by how much cuteness I'm accosted with every week, because I keep expecting it to dwindle, but I'm pleasantly surprised that, for now at least, the show knows what it's got going for it.

I LOVE how much Louis and Bok Shil like each other. I don't know why, but it feels rare to see a relationship actually develop from the crush stage now a days. I feel like too many dramas want to focus on the pre-get together conflict or hurdle that the couple needs to get over that by the time they're actually allowed to be together, I'm left thinking "okay, but do you even like each other at this point?"

I was very sad that my midweek happy pill was cut down to one dose this week. I always feel as if I've just had a good meal and am well rested after an episode of this drama. It's very wholesome despite the slightly outrageous fluff it appears to be on the surface.

NOOO!!!
How am I supposed to wait another week? Especially for that very last scene on the preview?!

What a sweet episode this is, just like ep 3 and 4. I love and adore how Bok Sil and Louis is so pure at heart and not calculative. It seems that coming from a very sheltered world makes them only learn positive traits in human.

That moment when Bok Sil nestles her face deeper to Louis' nape, ohhh, swooon and squeee, so darn cute. It's very refreshing to see Bok Sil always wholeheartedly receives any attention and 'advances', as someone said above, from Louis. I LOVE THAT!

Ohhh, and those three jumping around on the stairs, awww, when did the last time we, I, did that? This drama, oh, what will happen to my heart when this is over.

Ohhh, I bet she will. She accepted the hug with a smile, the piggyback ride with a grin, and she even hugged him first on the beach. Plus, it's SIG's, face and lips, OF COURSE she will accept that, lol.

I bet to differ. Boksil love for Louie is not there yet in my opinion. Like she care, pity, worried for him and she does feel
butterflies in her stomach every time Louie shows his sweet side, she probably feel a bit of void if Louie live with Cha but I don't think she loves like in love with him i mean not yet. She has a brother to find where it seems like she's getting uneasy days by days as they are not able to find him yet. I think her priority is still her brother even though Louie is big part of her life too.

If Ma ri finally know that Louie is alive and go all possessive on him, then maybe we will see bok sil jealous side. (Though I can't imagine her being jealous. Idkw)

Confession: I wasnt planning to watch this series for various i-am-responsible-adult-with-a-life-and-i-need-to-cut-down-my-watching-dramas-and-actually-socialize-with-non-netizens reasons.

But here I am. And YAY, Its so cute, I love it. :D

Lollypip, even I am afraid that once his memory comes back, he might not remember his time with BokShil.

And about Butler, I did not get that vibe. I hope it is not true. As much as I want Louis and Bokshil to figure out things on their own, they need somebody who is street smart in their corner, and I am hoping that Mr. Cha and Cutler will be on their side.

I dunno I think Cyborg Kim (Butler, I mean) has some other agenda. I mean, he is perhaps sticking to Louie cause he is looking for something - he went into Louie´s room when Louie was a child and snooped around. And I bet that thing is inside the penguin music box (random note but I am terrified of penguins btw.) what is that thing? what´s small enough for that music box? did memory cards exists - no, right? a key, maybe?

I can imagine Butler Kim as a dissatisfied employee, greedy enough to take everything away but that would just break my heart. He seemed to genuinely care about Louie's welfare in the first episode. I mean he practically raised Louie... So, I hope not.

Note: Does anybody here think that Ma Ri and Jung Woon can be a potential couple? Their mothers meeting each other though...

Me think so too. There must be a reason on why there was a scene that both of their mothers met n became good friends right ? But I hate to match evil Mari with him too. Haha.

Oh my .... The preview for next week's gonna kill me. Have to wait for another week for the epi ! As the Mr Cha I believed he had nothing to do with Louis. He genuinely really seems like he doesn't know Louis etc so I believed that he was not the one who know about the cucuois scheme n switch Louis before that car accident that caused Louis to lose his memory. Butler Kim shouldn't be another shady guy too but I'm so curious on who he was talking to when he said that "he haven't found him yet"... I don't think Louis will get back his memory too soon in the next epi though he seems to have got a hard knock on his head in this epi.

One of the scenes that I most liked was when the trio was eating out to celebrate Bok shil's contract extension - NJH has such a nuanced portrayal of emotion. I completely felt her bittersweetness about her brother not being there to celebrate with her.

I love how they use the usual drama tropes and turn them either upside down or use it to them extrem. And that awful hair. I could only think of dramas like Full House 2. Haven't seen it, but that promotional poster was awful enough.

Right, 'turn them upside down or use them to the extreme.' Which makes it pretty fun to watch for me.
As compared to something like Trot Lovers, which I watched and wanted to like, but it took the clichés and tropes very seriously in that one.

okay, here are the things I would like to crop from the show:

1.) the love triangle. (can't we just focus on Bok Shil and Louis?)

2.) the butler scenes. (it's too corny for my taste!)

3.) Joo Won's beard (I still don't understand why it's there)

on the other hand, I would like to order more:

1.) shirtless scenes (they help me survive the entire week)

2.) Louis, Bok Shil, and In Sung rapport (best team so far)

3.) Louis and Bok Shil intimate moments (next best thing to SIG shirtless scenes)

these, and the show would be perfect! XD

Am I the only one who finds the way Joong Won treats/likes Bok Shil to be creepy? It's not the age difference. I think it's the fact that he 1) walked right into her house without knocking and 2) when he saw what appeared to be an intimate moment between two people living together he didn't just turn around and leave.

Well I must that after I watched SKL from episode 1 up until episode 5, this drama remains consistently charming especially the chemistry between SIG and NJH and by the way, can I crowned SIG as the King Of Chemistry in the KDramaland? Haha he is undeniably has a strong screen charisma, and I must say chingus those emotions and chemistry emitted from SIG especially with his eyes, that is truly precious. I truly loved the beach scenes, as the way SIG wiped away his tears while still clucthing to NJH; it looks so natural and feels so common and may I add that SIG is super good at being natural too? I have tons of his videos, be it singing or NG videos of his filming dramas; it always occured to me that SIG is truly be himself whether it was on or off the camera. I watched him in the LOTJ in Mongolia recently, and you guys can watch how natural his presence are in the show; he wasn't an attention seeker, he was a mature adult male who is slowly making his way and his name into the Korean entertainment world. He is not your typical Korean male celebrities, he is just a regular guy who works hard on his talents, and even though he is not as popular as some actors who is on the same age of his, yet we are all know that his talents way behond his peers, and for that I loved you as who you are Louie, for you are the most helpless yet the most adorable chaebol I have ever encountered in my KDramaland history! Gukkie! Gukkie-ya! Squeeeee!

This is one of the most romantic SIG fandom confessions I've ever read. You got it bad, girl. (And I can totally relate)

That said, of all his leading women I think He hit reality closest with Apink Eunji and Lee Hana. I'm still waiting where this goes with Nam Ji Hyun.

Well if I can put them in order, Lee Hana would be the one that has the most chemistry with SIG as the leading female(well the order was totally based from the heart fluttering of mine, as I still watch HSKOS from time to time and I still couldn't get over the cloudiness that totally swept off my brain everytime they kissed) but with Jung Eunji the flames wasn't so bad either, haha!

I loved King of High SChool but I didn't like the romance at all. She was just to weirrd of a character.

I FRIGGIN LOVE THIS DRAMA! I can't believe I almost passed up on SKL. I seriously had no intentions of watching it at all. 2 days ago, I saw the title as I was checking out my usual dramas and thought I'd give it 2 episodes and if it doesn't catch my attention, I'd drop it. I ended up watching all 5 episodes in 2 nights. It would have been 1 night but I had to really control myself and sleep or I'd be a wreck at work. I had so many LOL moments, hubby had to come out and see what was going on with me.

I love this drama so much. It's not heavy at all. It's light and fluffy, but not the stupid kind. The OTPs are so damn adorable and charming that I was pulled straight in. It's a very addicting drama despite the many k-drama troupes, very typical and predictable plot line.

I love Bok Shil and Louis so much. I would be very happy to watch many episodes of them going on adventures. Throw in their neighbour In Sung as well. These three are my favourite stooges. This drama reminds me a bit of Beautiful Gong Shim, in that the plot line isn't all that great but the OTP's unique personality makes watching entertaining. I eventually dropped BGS but I can see myself finishing SKL.

I love this drama so much, I started watching because anything if SIG is in it, but OMG the show is so different and refreshing even using old tropes. I love both leads, especially Louis (adorkable) , I don't know if he's slightly autistic or has learning issues, or something like that, because he is really really so inocent and sweet.

I'm also happy that ratings are increasing every week.
Go Louie!!!
