The ardent love of the world’s last mermaid in Legend of the Blue Sea

The first teaser is out for SBS’s upcoming fantasy romance Legend of the Blue Sea, and the tone is unexpectedly sad and wistful, as we’re introduced to the abiding love between a man and a mermaid that spans centuries. This is our first peek at the highly anticipated four-way team-up between stars Jeon Ji-hyun (You From Another Star) and Lee Min-ho (Heirs), writer Park Ji-eun (You From Another Star, The Producers), and PD Jin Hyuk (City Hunter, Master’s Sun), and I for one can’t wait to dive in wholeheartedly.

The new SBS Wednesday-Thursday drama stars Jeon Ji-hyun as the last mermaid on Earth, on the verge of extinction. The drama is the story of her devoted love that’s told in multiple timelines, and as we see in the show’s first teaser, both leads will be featured in both past and present. In the present day, Lee Min-ho plays a genius swindler with fellow conmen Lee Hee-joon (Yoo-na’s Street) and Shin (Big) by his side, and as the mermaid adjusts to life on land and encounters the swindler, romance and comedy will ensue.

The teaser points at a sad backstory for the mermaid, and a love that’s endured centuries. It opens on Lee Min-ho staring out into the open sea and Jeon Ji-hyun swimming underwater, and intercuts quick flashes of scenes in Joseon—the hero dressed in an officer’s uniform, the mermaid captured, poked, and demoralized by men. Then in the present, he wakes up on the shore just as the mermaid walks away from him on two legs. Jeon Ji-hyun narrates in voiceover, “But I will keep my promise. Whether a storm comes, whether no one is here and I am lonely, whether I am afraid because it’s a road I’ve never taken before, I will endure it all and go to you.”

It’s only a series of breadcrumbs for now, but it does make me think that we’re in for a reversal of You From Another Star’s setup that’s familiar in a lot of ways—maybe this time the heroine will carry a torch for centuries, and search for her one true love in every doppelganger she meets. The teaser’s copy reads: “Permitted just once in a lifetime—the love of the last mermaid on Earth. So beautiful it’s like a dream. The legend of the blue sea.”

The legend begins November 16.

Wow, the teaser really looks good -- gorgeous leads, scenery and cinematography. But I almost didn't recognize LMH -- he sure lost a lot of weight. I thought the guy laying on the beach was a different actor, acting as younger LMH. I had to watch it several times to confirm it was him! Anyway, I will surely watch this and am hoping the whole drama is good. I love the writer, director and actors so I am optimistic.

It is a romantic comedy. Check out on twitter the many fan pics taken in Spain during filming and you will see that there are many funny scenes. The trailer is just a first impression. Im sure the drama will be a lote more light than it appears.

Am I the only one who noticed she appears to be wearing a jade bracelet in the final swimming image, and it seems that bracelet belonged to the Joseon Era hero? I actually went back and paused at the close up "holding hands" scene, and I believe he was wearing it, and she wasn't. So now she wears it to remember him? OMG! If that's true my heart just cracked. Now I've gotta watch it. I'm such a sucker.

I noticed it as well. I bet the bracelet will play an important role in their love story.

I am really trying hard not to get too hyped about this drama. I am trying to remain level headed and calm. But why did this trailer have to come through and slay like this? There are no flaws in it at all. The acting is impeccable, the cinematography is beautiful, the music is intoxicating, and the other all visuals are A+.

If this is any indication of how good the drama will be, we are in for the rides of our lives.

Jun Ji Hyun , did she even age a day since MLFTS ? o_o

Ok, first thing first I absolutely love JJH, she is the best korean actress I know. And it will be really amazing to see her portaging a melancholic mermaid, but I'm not so sure about Lee Min Ho, I'm still waiting to actually see him acting in the drama to decide if I was right or wrong about that first impression. The thing is in MLFTS even though I liked Kim Soo Hyun as an actor, I was totally mesmerised by JJH's acting and she overshadowed him in most part for me. So, in Legend of the blue sea, I hope that LMH will be able to match her performance.

I wasn't even anticipating at all that I didn't know that its almost three years and over 30 months since I've seen LMH in dramaland.

We wrote a prediction of how this drama might turn out based on the trailer. It's totally for fun because we love mermaids! :)

Not a fan of LMH at all, but the trailer looked intriguing and the cinematography was just beautiful, makes me willing to give this a try.
