Awards, awards, so many awards!

Not only are there a glut of ceremonies at this time of year, the 2016 SBS Drama Awards decided to change up their awards categories this year, separating them into multiple divisions by genre on top of the standard Top Excellence and Excellence prizes, amounting in a truly ridiculous number of winners. On the one hand, I actually like seeing drama awards based on genre rather than pure length or format, but I think it’s pretty apparent they were trying to give out as many as possible.

Still, inasmuch as I always tell myself these awards mean very little, I still look for my favorites and feel happy when they’re represented, so even something that’s mostly a participation and popularity award still has meaning. And while it’s a little unusual for the Daesang to be for a project that’s not done airing yet, I can’t complain about seeing Han Seok-kyu get it for Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim, which was definitely one of the station’s biggest hits of the year.

I said there were a lot of awards!

As for the fashions, it was a pretty good-looking event, though as so often is the case, the ladies disappointed me by going almost exclusively black or white. Why so many bridal gowns on red carpets, whyyy? I was dying for a pop of color or an unusual cut, and instead it was a very safe, albeit sleek and glamorously styled, event.

I was happy to see both Seo Hyun-jin and Yoo Yeon-seok pick up Excellence awards for Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim, though the part that made me laugh was their “Idol Academy Award” for being “Kissing Masters”—and if you’ve seen the drama, you’ll know they’ve got some sizzling kiss scenes. Watch and learn, kiddos.

Park Shin-hye (Doctors) has totally worn this gown before, right? It’s not my faulty memory? She looks beautiful, but sometimes her dresses have a samey-samey quality to them. (Aha! Found the dress, from 2012’s KBS Drama Awards.)

Lee Min-ho takes some of the prettiest pictures, I swear. He’s the one who’s been making Legend of the Blue Sea a hoot for me to watch, over (surprisingly) Jeon Ji-hyun, so I think his award is appropriate. Although, again, it’s not like anyone got left out of these categories! I’m just bummed Jeon Ji-hyun wasn’t at the event.

Despite its disappointing broadcast performance, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo was well-represented at the awards, and both its stars came by to pick up their trophies, looking stunning. I don’t absolutely love IU’s dress, but when you put her and Lee Jun-ki together, the overall beauty quotient is so dazzling that I hardly think about that.

Jo Jung-seok picked up a well-deserved Top Excellence in the Romantic Comedy, as did Namgoong Min. Part of me is annoyed at the splitting of winners when there are already so many more categories, but then the part of me that’s unwilling to choose between Jo and Namgoong wins out.

Speaking of whom, Namgoong Min was presented his award by his Beautiful Gong Shim co-star (and fellow award-winner) Minah. Together, they made that quirky little show crackle, and I’m happy for both of them.

Minah had a costume change for the actual ceremony, having walked the red carpet in a Cinderella-esque confection of a princess gown. Okay, she’s the idol in her breakout actress role, so despite my fatigue of familiar white gowns, I’ll give her the frothy princess dress of the night.

I did hate their co-star Seo Hyo-rim’s character in Beautiful Gong Shim (so jealous, so petty), but she probably has my favorite gown of the night. Check out that beading and sparkle! How does it shine so much without looking gaudy? It’s a mystery, but it’s perfect.

Yoo Seung-ho (Remember–Son’s War), one of my perennial red-carpet favorites! I don’t know if it’s that he never ages, or that he was blessed with ambiguously youthful looks to begin with, because I’m pretty sure he’s looked like this for years. Am eagerly awaiting his new drama Ruler—Master of the Mask.

If splitting categories was what allowed Oh Yeon-seo to pick up an award for Come Back, Ajusshi, then well done, because her zany comic performance drove that show and was an eye-opener to a new aspect of her talents, and it would have been sad to overlook it just because the show got poor ratings. (One of several dramas sacrificed to the juggernaut that was Descended From the Sun.)

Pretty! Maybe it’s not that bold or daring, but it’s beautiful, flattering, and a color not white or black, so I love this look on Kim So-eun, who picked up an acting award for Our Gap-soon.

Kim Sung-ryung (Mrs. Cop 2) is surely drinking unicorn blood or sniffing pixie dust, right? Because she looks way too youthful for a woman who reminded us, while picking up her Top 10 Stars award, that she was winning in a category alongside three of her drama sons: Lee Min-ho, Lee Jun-ki, and Jang Geun-seok (Heirs, Iljimae, and You’re Beautiful).

I keep looking back at Yang Jin-sung’s (My Son-in-Law’s Woman) outfit and trying to puzzle it out, because I think I like it, and it’s not indecent or overly short, but somehow it looks like she donned a boyfriend’s shirt on the way to the ceremony and made it work.

I wonder if Korea’s Mom Kim Hae-sook (Yes, That’s How It Is) realized, when she chose the all-white power suit which she’s frankly rocking, that someone else would also opt for the same look?

It’s not quite like wearing the same gown to the same party, but it’s gotta be a little awkward, no? Here’s Kim Ji-young, accepting her award for (Love Is Coming).

JJH is a splendid actress but LOBTs did nothing to her character and acting skill.
I give her proba for being such a pro swimming with a mermaid suit but for acting wise PSH in Doctors and OYS in Come Back Mister gave so much more acting wise. I esp gave proba to OYS for pulling an ahjussi in a hot woman body. She did act like a transgender

JJH's character in LOTBS is a total waste of her talent.

I've noticed that every actress that co-stars with LMH somehow gets a badly written character and the actress gets overshadowed and overlooked. It happened with Gu Hye Sun, Son Ye Jin, Park Min Young, Kim Hee Sun, and now Jun Ji Hyun. Park Shin Hye may have been the only exception to this. I have no idea why this happens, but it does.

@Reisha But out of all the actresses, PSH worked with LMH in Heirs and CES role is the role that got her the most hate even until today... It's the worst female lead KES ever wrote. All she did was crying

But PSH has proven herself again and again with Pinocchio and Doctors that people started to see she isn't as bad as they thought...

LMH deserves the award if rating was the sole basis for the best acting award. But if its purely based on performance, sorry, not a chance. Not even KRW nor HSK can compete.

KRW, LMH & HSK are good actors in their own right. But LJGs portrayal of Wang So was on another level. I would say it's a masterpiece. Sadly, it did not rate well in Korea thru that traditional TV index which left me wondering how such KPI indicator still matters in this digital world.

Koreans are not imporessed by LJG's overacting department. Kang Ha Neul is a better actor. His range as an actor is at a whole different level. Kang Ha Neul maybe the best actor of our generation. Learn to appreciate his skill.

Why does he "deserve" this award? Based on ratings? No, because Doctors with Kim Rae Won had better ratings. Based on acting? No, because Lee Jun Ki acted better.

But PSH's drama Doctors had better ratings and more buzz that the high budget mermaid show.
Her acting was good and the role is different too... while JJH is doing what she has been doing since My sassy girl.

I agree that LJK should have won over LMH and at least a co-award with KRW in Top Excellence category but have you seen Doctors? Because that drama was low budget, little promoted and 60 % carried by PSH and she was amazing in it and Yoo Hye Jung was a phenomenon, one of the most loved female characters (the most loved being Seo Hyun Jin’s Oh Hae Young) and the drama, which had a lackluster plot towards the end, still got +20 % ratings solely BECAUSE OF KRW and PSH’s acting. JJH def deserved better but she is exactly the same in dramas since My Sassy Girl and imo nothing different. LOBS ratings are stagnant and that drama is not a phenomenon despite it’s astronomically high budget and promotions. People still can’t credit a female actress in her twenties, coming this far BY HERSELF, no media play, no big agency, particularly THIS female actress.

The Hallyu Award was presented before the Daesang. Maybe SBS consider this as the 2nd Highest Honour but nobody seem to get it. MBC Daesang was decided by public vote & SBS may have thought it's the equivalent of that except only them know. What a fiasco! Otherwise, why would they award it before the Daesang?

Even DB didn't know the Hallyu Award was presented before the Daesang. Maybe DB didn't actually watch the award and just copy and paste the details somewhere.

I think that's what they intended, but it's still called a Hallyu Star Award, which in the past have always been known as just a popularity award, and that's why there's public outcry now cause people think sbs did LJG dirty.

Lee Joon gi IS already Hallyu star since 2008. So this award is not add more credit for him. I'm not sure what SBS was thinking. It might as you explain after all and I hope too :)

SBS intended it to be the 2nd highest honour but I didn't get it. Javabeans didn't get it because in her write up above, she put Hallyu Star at the bottom of the list when in fact it was presented just before the Daesang. Or maybe Javabeans didn't actually watch the awarding ceremony.

Totally agree, very insightful.Wonder when this site will give her credit for her achievements. PSH is just a joy when she receives these awards, always thoughtful and puts a lot of heart in her speeches. One of the things I look forward during award nights! Never got bored with what she says. SBS at least can depend on her to carry a show from start to finish, don't know of anyone else who does! Her fans are just happy that she is loved by her peers and the people who matters in her industry.....we are assured of her getting prime projects when she continues to deliver. Hope a pairing with KSH and success of movie with CMS for 2017!

I love watching PSH's speeches whenever she receives awards. She is a such a joy to watch. JJH is other hand overrated, i dont even like her movie Sassy girl. She is all the same in all of her roles.

Actually, JJH was nominated for Daesang (higher than PSH category) but she's lost to HSK. Do anyone know who else were nominated for Daesang beside HSK and JJH? Maybe LJK was also nominated for Daesang but didn't win.

There is no actual list of Daeksang nomination for SBS if I remember correctly.
It was picked in one of the top excellence nominator. HSK didn't win top excellence but get Daeksang instead.
So JJH, LMH, KRW, PSH, JJS, GHJ ect could have had win the award as well but HSK is the most suitable with acting skill and rating.

Lee Joon Gi's Wang So was a masterpiece. It's the best portrayed character in kdrama history. The Hallyu Award was the second highest honour of the night. As some say, the Daesang in the international level.

Thanks to Moon Lovers I found Lee Joon Gi and because of him I come to love Saguek and appreciate what great acting is, and understand the acting techniques used in Saguek and how different it is in modern drama.

JJS is still the kiss master from SBS for me this year, but I can't really be disappointed with YYS and SHJ winning because, well, their kisses are fantastic too, but even more so because they were so freakin' adorable receiving it together.

Still, I won't say their kiss scenes are hands-down the best yet, because the kiss from episode 23 of JI has yet to be beaten for me. Obviously I won't complain if they end up finding a way to surpass it ;) May they do their best!

Seo Hyun Jin and Yoo Yeon Seok coming to the red carpet while holding hands is one of the highlight of this award for me - knowing what they say in their interview is even better! The arrest joke is so cute.

For some reason, I feel like there's some truth in their old rumours (with Eric and Kim Ji Won - or maybe because I like them all) so I never ship SHJ - YYS in real life. But hey if they do turn out to be dating, I'll be so happy, their chemistry is sizzling!

And yay for Han Suk Kyu and Jo Jung Suk for picking up the awards!

SBS Award was among the most ridiculous awards, and so many awards. lmao. but yes it is a thankful award and SBS undeniably had a very good year in 2016.

Among tbe nonsense award / wrong winner was Seohyun won over Kang hana for acting award? (correct me if i was wrong, if im not mistaken both them mominated in same category). Seriously SBS? Even the blind people will choose Kang Hana over Seohyun.

Lee Min Ho shall wim the Hallyu Star Award and Lee Jun Ki shall be awarded as Top Excellent Actor. and Kim Rae Won, finally (althought he didnt come).

As someone who has been loyal to Kim So Eun for years, i am happy finally she can grab something. Regardless of the critics on her role / drama, she finally got something. She earned it by working hard for more than 10 years. More success in the future.

Seohyun and Baekhyun won awards at a drama awards show is an insult to itself. Unless they're vastly improving, to at least to the level of IU or Siwon, I wouldn't call their awards justifiable..
Pretty sure they got awards because SBS needs them as singers to entertain the audience. SBS could get them for free in exchange of awards..

Have to agree... If they wanted to award another cast from moon lovers, Kang Hana or even Jin Ki Joo that played Chae Ryung had better performances in that drama.

In addition, Kim So Eun totally deserves recognition. It's such a shame how talented she is among her generation. She should has the experience to be headlining major dramas, but unfortunately those roles goes to idols with meager acting experience.

It is a pity that Kang Hana competed in Excellence Group (Oh Yeon Seo won, but ive no complaints all since she was fantastic). Kang Hana should at least being given New Star Award. Hope her path wont be as difficult as Kim So Eun. I was teary a bit for KSE yesterday, although she is good enough to compete and awarded Excellence Award, for now i'm grafetul for whatever she got. Hope she can headline prime time drama after this.

Among all the young actresses in Moon Lovers, Kang Ha Na gave the best performances. Not even IU could come close to her wonderful acting. And yet she left home empty handed along with Lee Jun Ki who basically bringing home trophies thanks to the fans. I am super pissed with SBS.

They've been doing it for years. Usually it's separate by length so mini series, mid length and full length, but they went with genre this year so they could give out more awards I guess. It just gets more and more ridiculous each year. I liked it better when they only did one Top Excellence Award and one Excellence Award. Still waiting to see whether any of the broadcasting channels will ever use categories like Outstanding Actor, Outstanding Supporting Actor instead.

FYI: Lee Min Ho said in the ceremony that The reason Why Jun Ji Hyun hasn't attended the ceremony is that She is filming underwater scenes. So she was busy with her drama shooting.

PS I cannot believe Park Shin Hye won that award!!
Jun Ji Hyun had two Roles in "Legend of The Blue Sea". She is acting as a mermaid, which is so brand new and Hard! In the first episode Jun Ji Hyun had No Lines and AMAZINGLY portrayed her character through great facial expressions. HOW is it possible that Park Shin Hye won??

Am i the only one thought that psh is more deserved than jjh??
Hold on.. Im neither a fan of then both. I am a third party here.

Jjh's acting got me bored while watching blue sea. Thanks to lmh for savinh it but then i decided to quit on ep 12.

While psh was not bad and just in the middle of what ppl called potential acting. But at the very least, she was kinda different from her previous acting in the heirs. Jjh potraited a mermaid but all i remember is her character in love from the star.

For the first time, really2 a first time, i agree with this award about psh.

Well, doctor got higher rating tho. Soooo...

But my fave is dr kim casts. Well deserved for daesang winner. Fighting ajjussi!!

JJH is no doubt a bigger name but PSH deserves this award than JJH. Her mermaid role is the same with My sassy girl and YWCFTS while PSH did 180 degrees change for her Doctors roles and pulled it off.
How is her role different besides filming in water? and PSH acting with her eyes? Have you ever heard of FBND she didn't speak in the beginning of the drama.

Only PSH haters think this way. JJH’s mermaid is NOTHING NEW from her previous acting and characters whereas PSH’s Yoo Hye Jung was, in fact, a phenomenon and one of the most loved female characters. JJH def deserved better than that pathetic mukbang award and LJK is soooo much better than LMH but PSH deserved her award.

I love LMH and he is absolutely great in LOBS but for me LJK in SH gave heart wrenching performance and touched me more emotionally. I realize that ratings are important for network stations and I bet if SH got same ratings as LOBS then maybe LJK and KRW would had coed awards.

I agree that LJK deserves the award as well, but that doesn't make LMH undeserving. To be fair to LMH, he has done great with just the first half. The drama hasn't finished airing yet.

It would have been nice if doctors was not part of the same category and the award was split between LJK and LMH, then everyone wins. I mean, everyone is winning anyway so why not?

I am glad that ratings didn't stop SBS from giving recognition to Oh Yeon So. She was fabulous In Come Back Ahjussi.

I also like that Namgoong Min won for his role in Beautiful Gong Shim. I'm probably in the minority who didn't like his performance much in Remember-Son's War. To me, it was over the top and a caricature of a psychopath. Paired with a hapless crying Yoo Seung Ho, it was just too much. Sadly, Beautiful Gong Shim went makjang and too predictable towards the end. I thoroughly enjoyed it before it went downhill.

Go Kyung Pyo got award in "New Star"? Again, I am always flummoxed by this kind of categories.

Never mind Baekhyun, they just got to give him one but why "Special Acting Award" to Seohyun in Moon Lovers?

Hahaha...it's like the best of the worst! If SBS had gone purely on ratings, it would have ignored Jackpot, Entertainer and Moon Lovers. I am happy that Kang Haneul got Excellence for his role as Wang Wook. I think he gave more than was written because none of the characters made sense to me.

Han Seok Yu was a little late yesterday, at first i thought mybe he wont get any award (which is almost impossible, otherwise SBS will face backlashes from knetz because he is one of the most respected actor and his drama also a hit).

Among the daesang winner from all stations, i can say Han Suk Kyu is the best followed by Song Jong Ki in respect of talent. Congrats!

Was not a fan of the whole sharing an award thing, particularly with the Top Excellence ones. Overall the whole thing was a mess but at least they didn't screw up the Daesang, and I think Han Suk Kyu really deserves it!

Highlight for me was really watching the Moon Lovers cast being super extra and supportive when any of the others were on stage performing or receiving an award. Really warms me up to see their friendship, which reminded me of The Heirs' cast back in 2013. At least one good thing came out from that trainwreck of a drama.

Agree! The MLSHR table looked like so much fun, at least they enjoyed themselves for the evening with each other's company. The cutest was probably when they all were beaming like proud parents when Baekhyun got his rookie award. Whether he deserved it or not is another question, but it was really lovely to see how supportive they all were. Also really loved all the little "behind the scenes" on their respective instagrams. Benefits from working on a big project with a large ensemble cast of young budding actors I guess.

I could not believe when JB said Moon Lovers was well-represented when Lee Jun Ki was clearly robbed.

He won Hallyu star because of the fans but he was left out for his incredible performance. LMH is good but LOTBS has not completed airing and his performance is not as phenomenal as LJK and though he overshadowed JJH, LJK on the other hand was spectacular acting against a weak actress like IU and rise above a hot mess drama. Even Jang Geun Suk could win Top Excellence????

SBS Sucks. Suck! Suck! Suck! I hope they will run into train of bad luck in 2017 for robbing LJK.

I agree. The Hallyu Star award seemed like a consolation prize for not giving him a Top Excellence Actor award, which I think he clearly deserved. The thing I don't get is that since they were breaking down the awards into so many categories and all, and Fantasy and Genre were clearly treated as seperate categories for the Excellence and Special awards, why couldn't they have it separated for the Top Excellence Actor as well? Then they can award Kim Rae Won and Park Shin Hye for Doctors under the Genre category, and Lee Joon Gi, Lee Min Ho, and Jun Ji Hyun under the Fantasy category. Since they were clearly just handing them out, might as well make sure nobody was left out.

Forget about categories and double awards. This whole award thing with all stations are about recognizing the actors who bring in the ratings and popularity.

Despite my cynical view on ratings, they do matter. They get you recognition and awards. They also mean more opportunities, offers and choice of projects. It's all business.

International fans also mean nothing except the opportunity to sell the rights to air the drama in other countries. I don't know if SBS benefited directly or at all from Moon Lovers' international sales. I guess the bulk or all should go to the production house?

I for one feel that without Lee Joon Gi, MLSHR would've been completely buried by MBDC. At least with him leading, they still managed to hold their own on average albeit disappointing ratings. So I believe that credit should be given where credit is due. Anyway, I just don't understand why they just couldn't have separated the Genre and Fantasy categories for Top Excellence so they could award more people. Like weren't they doing that the entire award show? Manipulating the categories and doubling the awards just so they could award more people? Unless this was a conscience decision by the SBS execs to send a message that since the drama did poorly in ratings, we don't think you deserve any acting awards, but here's a Hallyu Star award since the drama was well received internationally? That's just low in my opinion.

While I do never take these awards too seriously, I agree that Lee Jun Ki should get Top Excellence.. But here we talk about ratings too.. Ratings are always important to tv networks as it is one of the most recognizable measure for popularity and success. Success = money and tv networks just like any other business entity needs money. They'll give highest reward for the ones who bring them money. So judged by the ratings, it makes sense if LOTBS and Doctors stars are awarded with Top Excellence, in spite of acting skills (or lack thereof).

And if you guys feel it's unfair to give Top Excellence for Lee Min Ho over Lee Jun Ki.. Just feel how unfair it was to give Top Excellence for Suzy over Go Hyun Jung (MBC 2013), yeah you're reading it correctly! It's my fave example on how acting skills will always be overshadowed by popularity and ratings no matter what. And imagine if RDTK got around 10% ratings and overshadowed by the others, I don't think Han Suk Kyu would win the Daesang if that's the case even if he's the best actor than other candidates by a mile..

YES. Ever since that Top Excellence award was given to Suzy, I have not taken ANY of these awards seriously. I come and look at the dresses, skim the comments, and call it a day. It is actually amazing how often good acting gets overlooked in favor of popularity, ratings, idols and - oy! - kisses.

I know how this game works, and I get how ratings work but I think if you win an award for "Best Actor" it should be because you actually were ...subjective I know but there aren't many who are going to compare the LMH and LJG performances and pick LMH. I say this though LMH was my gateway to K-Drama.

What is the perk to bringing in the high ratings....you get paid more per episode. That's all you should expect and that's no small thing.

This is why these shows are a joke. Normally I don't care but LJG got frigging robbed. Also, the actors know how this works....so don't they know it isn't about their acting most of the time anyway? The gal from Come Back Mister was fantastic. That award means something because everyone knows CBM got crushed by DOTS. That is the standout award for me for this station. So good job there.

Was Jeon Ji Hyun left out because she didn't attend? But so did Kim Rae Won and he won Top Excellence.

If I had watched any of LOTBS, I would have rolled my eyes at Lee Min Ho getting Top Excellence and alongside with that, JJH not getting any.

I couldn't stand LMH after Heirs but now, I am back at being neutral. He still isn't the best actor among his peers by any measure. However, he has improved and become more likable with this role.

I stopped watching LOTBS but I was surprised that I liked LMH's performance more than JJH in those first few eps I saw. Maybe her character is not well written and fleshed out but I didn't find her funny, cute or enjoyable in any sense. It felt as if she was doing her same old stuff and it's gotten old and tired.

I agree with you on two points: I'm very neutral when it comes to Lee Min Ho - I have not encountered a drama that made me impressed with his acting.

And I also feel like JJH's acting in LOTBS is cute, but I feel like its very similar to her YWCFTS and Sassy Girl characters. People may disagree, but I feel as if she is always playing a "quirky" character. Nothing wrong with that - it's jut that her mermaid character does not stand out.

That being said - I'm still watching LOTBS and enjoying it! I don't really analyze dramas; they are a fun respite from studying and working ;D

It's the new year and I really didnt want to make thinks sour.
But its official Dramabeans definitely doesn't particularly like or see PSH as favourable at all.
Initially, I thought it was just those leaving comments, but its clear the official members have a low opinion of the girl, to some degree, which is transparent in their writing.

She rarely gets acknowledgment on this particular site and that's fine(especially, if you go by the saying..if you have nothing nice to say don't say nothing at all) and funny enough, in the past I perceived it as such when it came to Javabeans and co.; its clear they have their particular favourites, like we all do....sadly though you've got to be some type of desperate to have to go as far back as 5 years just to point out if she wore a similar gown.

So what? What was the point, you weren't genuinely trying to give a complement. It was subtle but in poor taste....its very much noted. I know dramabeans has influence in the international community and to a large extent affect the choices in taste that viewers take on. I do find it at times helpful, however I will be conscious enough to avoid any future posts with Park shin hye content.

Park Shinhye does get very polarizing comments. While she is regarded as a top actress in Korea, she is widely disliked by international audience. Especially on DB, people go on and on about her kiss scenes and Cha Eun-sang role which happened 3 years ago.

Doctors was a breakout role for her, in terms of acting and/or leading a drama by herself. So she absolutely deserved the award. More so, Doctors got higher ratings over LOTBS. JJH is fantastic as well but her role is nothing spectacular.

I'd not say she is disliked by international audience when all her dramas have been doing well in all the streaming sites including Doctors which the male lead isn't a hot young hallyu star. Her star power alone is enough for people to check out her work.
But she does have a lot of haters mostly from different ships or fans of other actresses or idols because they think their biases are better but not as loved and popular as her.
Last, she has been on top of Hallyu since 2009. It's almost 8 years now so her fans are getting older and not as active to promote or defend her like newly rising actors actresses with new fans. So you might get the impression that she is disliked...

People here MOSTLY either loves an actor/actress or completely dislikes them. There are those that belong in the in-between sometimes.

I really feel bad for actors who continually want to prove themselves but people still can't appreciate even the slightest of effort just because they already decided they don't like them.

*whispers* Sometimes, it would feel like "knetz-attacking-a-star-to-doomsville" atmosphere.

Frankly, while the ratings 4 CBA were low due to DOTS, IMHO Oh Yeon Seo's talent outshines PSH or JJH's acting abilities. Same with Lee Jungki this year against LMH or KRW. OYS and LJK are both Stars and Actor Actor's. JMHO Have a wonderful New Year everyone.

While you don't like her but she has all the reasons to win: Her drama are the 2nd highest rating this year for SBS and she is the leading character- not the male lead but her- a 20's something actress playing a different role and won.

Aside from Daesang, most of awards not being given purely on acting chop, the actors in high rated drama competed in Top excellence while the actors in less popular / less rated drama nominated in the smaller categories. That's why i called this award just Thank You Award, basically SBS thanked them because bring money. Not impossible to see next next year, the ones nominated in Top Excellence could be goes down to Excellence Award if the drama is not high rated.

I understand that Dramabeans is a place where the opinions of the Staff is very influential for international readers and fans, and BECAUSE OF THAT I feel that opinions, word choice, and comments made by the staff should all the more be made carefully and more tastefully, but that wasn't what I was reading or feeling for the majority of what I had read on Dramabeans in 2016.
2016 on Dramabeans felt like biases grew bigger and whoever wasn't a bias got little attention (therefore, not giving the remaining readers a fair share of what's going in Hallyuland) to no attention T.T For recaps, there were a handful of them written by a particular couple of recappers where I felt that the opinions and remarks/comments of the recapper, that comes at the end of every recap, was so unnecessary, so biased, and so un-tasteful, and regrettably, those untasteful comments made by the recapper made precedent on the comments/opinions of the readers in the "Comments" section as to how and what types of comments were allowed in the Dramabeans community (which shocked me... (TBcontinued...)

As I was saying, yes, many of the comments made, that were ALLOWED to be made, and posted (therefore, already filtered and passed by the Dramabeans staff, since y'all get e-mails about every.single.comment about every.single.post) shocked me and left a bad taste in my mouth...
As a reader, if something you've read on Dramabeans doesn't sit well with you, voice it; As a recapper, if something you've watched and are recapping about doesn't meet your needs or your taste in plot/drama/genre then STOP RECAPPING IT instead of making yourself go through 16 episodes of a drama you think is crap, risk looking bad and putting a bad taste in your readers' mouths, and driving away readers... And no, "recapping something out of obligation for the readers/fans" even when you, yourself, don't enjoy the drama: I will be the first one to call BS on that

If I end up getting haters for this whole schpeil/rant from other readers/commenters, or even get banned from Dramabeans after this... so be it

i said this once when they are recapping the Youth Over Flowers Africa... towards the end few last episode, their tone of recapping changed to be more negative. it was so hard to read that i requested them to stop recapping if the show has becoming boring and a burden to them. god knows they used to stop recapping when the show is not that enjoyable to them.

I generally don't read the re-caps because I either watch a drama or I don't so I generally will just read the opening and closing remarks. I can tell sometimes when the tide has turned, and a recapper is not happy with the drama anymore. I agree it should be understood that they have a "drop" option. I know some beanies would be disappointed but watching a drama that is not working for the recapper has got to be painful because I know they have to watch it more than once to do this.

The problem for me is the perception that DB is the last word on K dramas other than that if the recapper feel the need to be negative then that's their prerogative. If people think that DB comments reflect some kind of mainstream, orthodox view of a drama, then they need to look elsewhere to see the diversity of opinions on the web. I generally just stop reading and leave. There are many other sites that support the shows I like.
But I know what you're saying about the flow on effect of negative recaps to the comment section. it's unfortunate but a reality that people gather round a rallying cry. Positively or negatively.

I am not a fan of Lee Min-ho but after I watched some episodes of Legend of the Blue Sea, oh God, I bacame a fan of him. He is great in that drama. It's not because of his pretty face, but his acting that makes the LOTBS popular/hit in Korea and Internationally. I want to see him do more saguek or comedy genres. He truly deserves the Top Excellence Award.

Good thing that SBS did not ignore those dramas (like Moon Lovers and Jackpot) that got low ratings in Korea.

The cutest part of the awards ceremony was when Tae Oh (Shin Won Ho) accompanied Joon Jae (Lee Min-ho) in the stage in getting Best Couple Award, since Ji-hyun was not there. Won Ho is such a cutie?

I have no issue with Kang Ha Neul's win amd he should not share it with anyone. With the least interesting role that he was given, he made Wook shines with his brilliant acting. The point is, LJK should get the Top Excellence. Like I said before, when an actor stood out from a great project, that actor sure is good. But LJK is differrent, he defies all rules, despite everything that is wrong about Moon Lovers, his performance made 4th Prince Wang So so iconic. Oh, he eventually got passed all the hurdles but tramped by the ratings. SBS should win "The Most SUCK TV station" ever.

Clearly who SBS(or any station) thinks is deserving differs from our opinions.

Most of the awards can be explained with regards to ratings. That's not to say that none of the winners are worthy. If your favorite actor doesn't win an award, don't be surprised. Just look at the ratings of his/her drama.

There are exceptions like Oh Yeon So who got an award despite Come Back Ahjussi failing miserably. And Jeon Ji Hyun who didn't get any despite LOTBS faring well.

SBS lost big time in the ratings with Moon Lovers against Moonlight Drawn By Clouds. Worst, it was unexpected. It must have been total mayhem with them trying to do something about it, re-editing, making different versions etc. There was no way they would give an acting award to IU and LJK. Whether it's the actors' fault or not is irrelevant. They are paid to bring in the numbers despite everything. Unfair but that's how it looks like.

I would've agreed with you, except there were tons of actors who were from dramas with mediocre ratings that did get awards and recognition. Similarly, with Moon Lovers, Kang Ha Neul won his category, and ironically so did Seohyun. So ratings were clearly not the only factor here. However, for the bigger awards I can clearly see ratings as being a bigger factor than the rest, but nonetheless you can't really blame us fans for feeling that our favourite actor or actress was snubbed when they put on a stellar performance that clearly deserved some recognition. Especially since SBS were handing out awards like nobodies business and they could've easily created more categories and no one would've bat an eye since there were so many already. And as you say, it's unfair, so that's why we're all here whining and letting out our woes.

I can't explain Kang Haneul although I think he's totally worthy of the award.

For Seohyun and Baekhyun, my first thoughts were "some kind of deal with their agencies" in exchange for "I don't know what".

I think Lee Jun Ki and IU took the biggest fall because they were the leads.

In any case, isn't it better to blame it on ratings(which I think it is) than SBS actually giving the award based on acting skill? That would look even worse.

On another note I'm really happy when Lee Jun Ki speaks in English while receiving Hallyu Star Awards (*roll eyes). But he's really good speaking English and seems confident too. For a non-native and a Korean on top of that who usually uncomfortable speaking English, he comes off very comfortable and easy to understand. He makes his i-fans (including me) really happy because at last I can understand someone at Korean drama awards in my 2nd language.. haha
He always know how to make his fans happy and I'm esp happy when he's shown making cute gestures like finger hearts or finger guns when the camera pans on him.
Lee Jun Ki-ssi, let me pray for your success this year and years to come and may you receive a deserved Daesang in the future!

Awww, Han Seok-kyu Ajusshi! I've only ever seen him in Romantic Doctor Teacher kim but I absolutely love him, so happy he won the Daesang, he totally deserves it.

Seo Hyun-jin and Yoo Yeon-seok all smiles are just so adorable. Kissing masters? Nodding my head in agreement!

And Kim Sung Ryung is gorgeous.

So happy that my baby Kang Haneul won! He's been in so many projects, and despite shining in each and every one of them, he hardly gets the recognition he deserves. I fee l like a proud mkom rn. Honestly, Moon Lovers was a mess, but KHN's and LJG's performances made it a worthwhile watch. A shame seohyun won tho, her award was the least deserving. Pretty sure almost everyone skipped her scenes.

I actually think GHJ and JJS managed to strike the perfect balance. He may have had the flashy, more entertaining character, but it was GHJ's performance as Na-ri that helped ground the series. And no one gives her enough props for how she managed to make her character lovable and relatable, even as she two-timed. Her performance in episode 23, alone, makes her a shoe-in for Top Excellence.

On the other hand, I'm of the opinion that KRW and PSH had their show stolen from them by the supporting characters at some point. And this wasn't their fault, so much as it was the writer's, but it still happened (for me). I still think they deserve some recognition for the charisma and acting they displayed throughout, but GHJ and JJS were simply able to give the more impressive performances because they were given better material to work with. So while I wouldn't go so far as to say GHJ was a "gazillion" times better, she was still, well, better.

Ratings change things though. And, in that area, no one can contest KRW and PSH's victory. This is one the reasons I'm grateful for a separate category for rom-com.

Pyo Nari is exactly same as Tae Gong Sil whereas Yoo Hye Jung was one of the most loved female characters of 2016. Transparent PSH haters who can’t fathom the fact that a young cild actress transitioned successfully into an adult actress with her OWN hard work without media play and big agency. I used to be neutral towards her but seeing this irrational bandwagon hate and stupid irrelevant comments and comparing female actresses who are just doing their thing makes me really annoyed. Envy is the root of all evil, you know what that means ? Just thankful her peers and powers that be knows her weight, everyone from the youngest to the oldest just loves her as shown in that latest clip of awarding the trophies, a BIG HUG from the veteran actress! She is the only one who gets a genuine "happy to give this flower and trophy" from the presenter...see clips from last year with Honey Lee and from previous years. Besides most of them probably wishes to be in her show! Haha! Funny how fans of actors who want higher ratings pray that their fave work with her.....the best compliment. Well known directors also are aware of her charisma and acting abilities....more salt if I may say so ?

2. There are actors of lower rating dramas have won too like OYS and KHN. So you can talk bad about SBS but rating isn't the only thing they relied on.

Thank you "Scarlet Heart" for having a cast that is 80% men and that you have made them grace the presence of our eyes for this event ^.^ My favourite look out of all the ladies has got to be Lee Sung Ryung sunbaenim: Classic, classy, not overdone but also definitely not understated
All these red carpets always make me wonder if Korean men are actually that tiny for the lady that he is escorting down the carpet to be only half a head shorter than him, but then I remember that all thses women are wearing 5-8 inch heals that could probably take someone's eye out if used in a certain way, therefore placing the women in a position you do not want to mess with lol Jkjk

2. All the moments with the "Scarlet Heart" cast... For what it's worth, despite it being a letdown drama, you gotta admit that they all do have camera presence when they are being themselves and just enjoying the night and having fun being in each others' company... you can tell that this cast has really connected and have made solid life-/career-long friendships with each other *be still, my heart* It's such a breath of fresh air and an precious "ohthankgod" moment to be able to see Lee Jun Ki and Kang Ha Neul be their sunny happy, and bright selves again after all that angst from the drama

For the first time I watched it live and, boy, was it loooong. So many awards. So many ridiculous awards. Idol Acadamy? Really?!

Who in his right mind had the idea to give JJH an eating award? Why should an actress of her status appear on a show because apparently her only noteworthy achievement is piggin out for a role? Not funny.

Lee Hwi Jae did an awful MC job btw. He joked repeatedly about Sung Dong Il appearing in an anorak. Quite likely this guy came straight form the set and was so tired he was cold. He didn't appreciate the joke, but LHJ didn't feel the vibes and didn't stop.

On top of that he forced Jo Jung Seok to add a comment on Gummy. How impolite! JJS and Gummy never appear together and hardly comment on eachother, because they very well know how merciless the audience will dissect everything they said should they ever seperate. And stupid LHJ squeezes an additonal comment on her out of him. He was truly obnoxious.

OH My God!!!! Lee Jun Ki looks so hot. May be the people at SBS should come out with a drama where we can see him in a tux just walking here and there!!
Otherwise they could make a version 2 of the pokemon go game where you have to chase Lee Jun ki and yoo seung ho and all other korean hotties.

LOL. Your comment made my day. Lee Jun Ki was dashing and so were his Moon Lovers' brothers. Hong Jong Hyun looks mighty hot while Kang Ha Neul is so adorably dorky. I am just bummed that LJK was snubbed.

I dont mind the new format by genres but theres just too many to keep track off. I kp thking when is it the final award. Its pass midnight my place. And pass 1am korean time. I kp thking sbs why so much time shamelessly goin on and on for product advertisement esp the bodychair.
It detracted the focus of the weight od the awards and its nominees.

Theres even more wedding dresses in sbs award i thk. So any of the ladies NOT in white kudos to you

Too many superfluous awards. What was even the point of Idol Academy Award? At least no one would argue with Han Seok Kyu winning the Daesang. I consider Lee Min Ho to be more Excellence than Top Excellence. SeoHyun does not deserve an award for her excruciating acting in Moon Lovers.

Kim So Eun was my favorite dress of the night. Yoo Seung Ho being described as "never aging" and "youthful" is ironic since 1993 is still very young.
