Celebrate Dramabeans’ 10th anniversary with us!

Happy new year everybody! This year is special for us not only because we get to kick 2016 away (although it was admittedly a pretty solid year for dramas) and welcome in a fresh, unspoiled one, but also because it marks Dramabeans’ tenth anniversary.

This site started as a tiny side project in January 2007, and that means we just completed our tenth year and are now heading into Year Eleven. That number still doesn’t seem quite real to me, and I can’t quite grasp that we’ve been at it for so long (and through so many dramas)—but, if good for nothing else, the white hairs on my head are testament to how much time really has passed.

I never imagined when Dramabeans began that it would turn into a full-time job, or that it would grow to this size, or that I’d meet and make such connections with people I consider lifetime friends. It’s now officially been the longest job either I or girlfriday have held, which is a bit daunting to think about but is also something we’re intensely grateful for. We love this work, and although it often exhausts us—we aren’t as young as we once were!—we still find the energy somehow to carry on, because it’s so worth it. (And, it’s ruined us for proper jobs elsewhere, if we’re being honest!)

I’ve always said that I had no idea how long I intended to run Dramabeans, but that’s not because I had one foot out the door, but more that it would have been too daunting to commit for so much time up front, feeling locked in by a promise rather than being led by something more powerful—the joy that dramas bring us, and that fierce need of the fan’s heart to share that with other fans. And I firmly believe it’s that open-ended view that has kept us open and going strong, because while we know that we can walk away whenever that love dies, that’s a freeing thought more than anything, because we also know that we’ll probably love dramas forever in some capacity.

To celebrate our tenth birthday, we’ve got some fun things planned in the month(s) ahead, so keep your eyes peeled! We’ve got our eyes on a new look for the site, and we’re also planning a celebratory party—one that we’d like to open up to all of you to attend, to meet other Beanies and hang with the Dramabeans staff. Because what’s the fun in aging if you don’t get to party?

Dramabeans 10 Year Anniversary Party

Saturday, February 11, 2017
5PM
At Monk Space in Koreatown, Los Angeles

To attend, please RSVP to hello@dramabeans.com, providing your name and number of attendees.

The venue has a capacity limit, so we’ll be taking RSVPs to reserve spots and will confirm via email. (If we run out of slots, we’ll start a waiting list, so if you have to bow out at a later date, please let us know so we can open it up for others.)

Thank you all for an eventful and rewarding ten years—you guys make this place the best job to turn to every day. We hope to see you there!

Wow, Congratulations!!!

I remember the first time I found this site was actually back in late 2007 when I was a Freshman in college! Wow has time flown by. I have to say this is one of the only websites that I have consistently stuck with for that long of a time period. Obviously shows how wonderful this site truly is and the joy that Javabeans, Girlfriday, and the rest of the staff have brought through their work. Thank you so much and best wishes for 2017! :)

Congratulations javabeans, girlfriday and the rest of the team. You truly are part of my K-drama addiction since 2005. I wish I could join and meet some of my co-DB readers unfortunately, I live outside the US. But I'll definitely send my love to everybody and hope to read the stories and see pictures from the party!

Congratulations!! Has it really been ten years?! Time sure as hell flies. 2007 was also the year I started watching kdramas though it took me another year and half to discover this awesome site during the BOF madness days. The whole online kdrama viewing community as a whole has changed so much and you guys have now been at the center of the action for over a decade! That's an incredible achievement. Keep up the good work. I kinda hate that I don't live in the west coast to be able to come to this party. On the bright side I'll always be glad I was able to come to your first ever meet up in NY 4 years ago (wow that's an insanely long time ago as well) and meet you guys. I hope you will be coming to the north east again some time soon. Happy Tenth anniversary!!

Congratulations for the 10th Dramabeans anniversary!

I've been an avid reader (and lurker) since 2009's Boys Over Flowers even though I've been watching KDramas years before that. I was googling for some BOF info out of boredom and bumbed into DB instead. And I was a goner. I've been here everyday since.

I've lurked for a while before started participating actively on You Are Beautiful thread. Writings became longer each day and it was such a joy to share opinions and giggles with other Beanies. I decided to share my little addiction during DB Addiction Story Giveway and I actually won haha (the story of the rats and me and Jang Hyuk). I still don't know whether to laugh or to feel embarrased about it. I still can't believe the extent I had went for Kdrama. And no, don't think I can do something THAT extreme now. *cringe*

Reality check brings me back to being a lurker and I only comment once in a while now. But DB is still on top of my bookmark list and I still come here everyday. It's my happy place and I'm glad it stays that way even after all these years.

So thank you for being here Dramabeans! And may you enjoy many more 10ths of Anniversaries!

Oh Happy 10th anniversary Dramabeans!

It was my frustration to find the fastest site where I could watch the then running My girlfriend is a gumiho (with english subtitle) that lead me to Dramabeans. And loooo It was love at first sight!!! from then on I'd check this site on a regular basis (sometimes like 10 times a day ?). My kdrama experience/life wouldnt be as better without you.. Whenever I could'nt understand a certain scene I'd check your recaps and you'd never fail me! Thank you DB for your effort and all! (I did wonder before if you're getting paid for this or what if you'd stop writing OMOOO.. just thinking freaks me out!)

I wish you more years (for my selfish reasons) just kidding! ?? For me you are all like detective Lee Jae han, Though I have'nt met you, I feel like you're my BFFs! Always nurturing and helping me solve the msyteries of the Kdrama world. Like Park hae young I would really want to meet you but I guess it's quite impossible for now...

Anyway, Congratulations to you all for getting this far! be healthy! Sending you much love! ??

I've been here for the most part of the 10 years that dramabeans have been online.

I came across this site when I was looking up information about Dalja's Spring in 2007.

The site has gone through so many changes, so many good dramas and bad dramas have aired but what stayed the same is the good writing/articles that I have come to expect from this site.

I don't normally comment on dramas, I'm more of a lurker, but I would like to say a big THANK YOU for everything. This site and you guys.. javabeans, girlfriday and the rest of the crew have been a part of my life for the last 10 years.

To more years to come!!!

p.s.

I loved the drama podcasts especially those times that javabeans and girlrfiday had something to drink!

Omg, oh how I'd love to attend this awesome event to celebrate with the Dramabeans staff and all you beanies! I mean, I guess I could buy a ticket to LA... eh, in any case, I can't believe it's been a whopping 10 years! Congratulations, my lovely Dramabeans! I love this website so so much and I've said it before, but I'll say it again: Dramabeans IS and will always be my (Korean) drama bible. It's my go-to site for Korean dramas and more! I'm so happy to have this site in my life and I literally check it every day. It's the first thing I check when I wake up and the last thing I check before I go to sleep. It's become a habit, really. I'm so excited for Dramabeans' makeover! I remember when y'all changed the design and formatting back then (with the horrendously made-up version of Go Eun-chan as the post's photo!) from the pink and blue to what it is now, so I can't wait to see a new look! Here's to 10 more years!

Thank you for all your hard work in recaping and updating us with Korean Drama news and being just a place where it is ok to squeal and sometimes rant about our beloved characters or stories!

Congratulations, been following since 2007. Sometimes your recaps are way more entertaining than the drama itself. Dr Jin comes to mind. Your writing is so fun to read. It is not a dry plot summary recap. Keep up the fun and entertaining writing!!

Here's to an AMAZING 10 years! CHEERS!!! Thank you SO much for all the hard work you and the DB crew do for all of us avid drama lovers. Even though I mostly lurk and rarely comment, I just want you to know how much you are appreciated! I can't even count how many dramas I've watched, how many times I've rushed to your site for recaps and/or because I needed clarification on understanding something in an episode, and I honestly don't even know when I first found Dramabeans.com - all I know is that it's been a LONG time!

People think it's kinda odd/crazy when I tell them I don't watch American TV. For me, it's too "in your face" and too graphic - I don't need to see all the blood and guts in scenes. This ajumma prefers the sweet romances, funny and clean jokes and laughs, and most things about Kdramas (although I really get tired of the mean mothers-in-law). And I appreciate how the majority of Beanies are civil and can have good, mature, thoughtful discussions about our favorite shows without being mean and personally attacking others. That's one of the things that makes this site special.

Thank you, again! Hope I can make it to the meet-up in LA.

Happy New Year to all Beanies out there!!!

Happy 10th Birthday, DramaBeans, and blessings on your ringleaders, minions, and worldwide band of Beanies!

*intones sageuk speech* Manse, manse, man manse!

I'll have to join the party in spirit from northern New Jersey, USA. Mazel tov!

I first became aware of DB in 2013 while desperately searching for serious discussion of THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG. I wanted so badly to understand the deeper implications of addressing the heroine as "unni" (a smoking gun in the plot). The length of the drama precluded recaps here, but I tucked the name of the site in the back of my mind, and when it came time to watch another Kdrama later in 2014, I remembered DramaBeans. I started out a lurker, and later discovered Open Thread, and eventually began live-watching and commenting on shows.

Thank you all -- from javabeans on out to the furthest-flung Beanie -- for enhancing my understanding and enjoyment of Korean dramas, films, OSTs, and even the odd bit of Kpop. It has been a blessing and pleasure to meet you all in our shared quest to analyze, discuss, squee over, and generally appreciate Korean language and culture (and performers!), which for many of us is a deeply mysterious matter of the heart. Truly, I sometimes wonder if we all have had past lives in Korea.

I'd also like to thank javabeans & accomplices for creating a haven on the Interwebs for often-hilarious discourse where civility and good manners is the norm. The high signal-to-noise ratio charms me, but it's the warmheartedness and conviviality that keeps me coming back. Please keep it up for as long as it remains the fun and unconventional job you engineered for yourself.

Thank you for inviting us all to join in the fun. ;-)

With warmest Aloha,
PakalanaPikake

Man, i wish i could attend the meeting. Too bad it's on the other side of the globe and in the middle of the Financial rush for FY16. Or i swear i would have make everything to attend. i dont care i would have to speak English all the time or travel in a place i dont know at all. I can just see the fun and the mind blowing exchanges between beanies.

My expectations for your gathering are really high. i hope it will be as awesome as I imagine.

I wish you in advance a good birthday. You kind of remind me i also start my dramalife in the hot days of 2007's summer. (it was a welcome pleasant change instead of school life and exams), Still, with each day passing, i realize i'll keep on calling you sunbaes all my life. No matter how much drama i have seen, you two watch more than twice than me.

And here all my greetings for the new year. May it be a good year for drama, for Heath and for love.

Happy anniversary ??? Keep rocking!!

DB is more like a social app(Facebook/Whatsapp/Google plus) than a website dedicated to Kdramas. People here don't restrict themselves to Kdrama but extend the debate to principles of life, sharing personal stories, planning trips/meetups, basically anything that's under the sun.

DB sort of became a guidebook( or should I say guide-community) to Korea & its culture. It is also an eye opener to cultural understandings of other nations. The very fact that DB admins reside outside Korea, has made it possible for international people to interact freely despite the differences.

For me, the first thing in the morning is reading the newspaper. Likewise, checking DB has become a routine for me. DB has become so addictive that I can't get enough of it. Looking forward to more Db activities. Thank you Beanies and DB staff.

Awww! Congratulations, congratulations!
Late last night I refinished Coffee Prince for the nth time, having also reread the recaps here. A sobbing mess for most of the second half.

Back then, half of the folks called you Sarah, and at the end of it all, you thanked your budding community for the almost 3,000 comments! What an achievement that must have been. Nobody else was in the game at that time. You had the recaps (then summaries) completed within 5 hours of airing, too, to feed your rabid audience.

Your fans have adored you longtime!

My god, you have achieved so freaking much. I am proud to know you and happy you and GF and Heads and Gummi and all the rest can live your dreams doing what you are good at and what you love. (You didn't even have to go abroad two, or three years, to prove yourself!)
