Drama viewership ratings for the week of Jan. 9-15, 2017

We’re in the last lull before the next cycle of dramas starts, and all the awards ceremony pre-emptions created some interesting ratings results as two of the Wednesday-Thursday shows finished their runs by airing their final episodes on Wednesday. That left a dearth of things to watch on Thursday, so most seemed to flock to Legend of the Blue Sea for being the only drama to air that day, which meant the show could finally break that coveted 20% mark.

But how long that’ll last is anyone’s guess, since it’ll have two new shows to compete with next week. Rewinding more to the beginning of the week, Night Light continues to perform below expectations, and seems to even be struggling to get above 4%. Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim continues to dominate and rise in the ratings, but thankfully, they will not be extending their run, so the final episode will air next week.

Hwarang’s future may depend on Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim ending, since it’s still doing quite well despite the stiff competition. Over on the weekend, we had one new premiere in OCN’s Voice, which netted 2.3%—which is pretty darn good for airing at 10:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. But this wasn’t the week for The Lonely Shining Goblin fans, since only one episode aired. The production didn’t give a clear cut reason as to why, but it seems like they needed more time. That just means triple the Goblin next week, though, so bring it on.

Anybody watching Voice here? I saw the first episode and I think it has the potential to be a really good thrilling drama.

Just saw it. And I agree. I do however, think that the editing could have been better - and I literally mean the cut between scenes. Just as Goblin lingers FAR FAR too long on a scene, this one could do with a little more lingering to give it a more natural and less abrupt ending.

I've seen Jang Hyuk before, but didn't like the shows much so I dropped them. Here, though, after that scene where he cried over his wife, I can see the hype over him. Lee Ha Na was good as well - I'm looking forward to seeing more of her.

Maybe that's why I feel it lacks a little build up to some emotional or thrilling parts. But it's still overall good and intriguing so I'm excited to see where our story will take us.

Jang Hyuk's acting might not be a favourite for some as it may looks too excessive or overacting, but if we can connect with his style, we will love and loyal to him forever. I kinda wish to see him and Song Yoon Ah in any drama, but then the screen could be looks crazier lol. They are kind of actors that go all out in acting and don't care if their expression look ugly.

Watched it, i am hooked I really love the first episode, it gives Signal feels.
Didn't like JH's character in the first episode despite being a huge fan, i know it improve later.

I liked LHN's performance very confident and convincing. Looking forward to today's episode.

Just finished the episode. Gosh, I kept getting goosebumps and my heart kept pounding. Throughout the scene where Jin Hyuk was trying to find the girl, I had to hold my phone away from me, in the misguided belief that it'll lessen my anxiety. I WAS LIKE YEAH GET HIM YOU GOT THE RIGHT PLACE... THEN cliffhanger. I need the next ep like now. Right now.

Been a long time since I picked up a crime show. I was an avid fan of criminal minds up till season 6, idk why but the show lost its spark.

Just now finished watching the first episode. I agree its thrilling and intriguing (SPOILER) but what I don't get is how come the kidnapper didn't think of getting the girl's phone? Especially if he had done this before, he wouldn't overlook it, right?

I was thinking of that too when
I watched episode 1. Why didn't the killer take her hp and tie her up?? She was like running loose in that 3 storey high place. If he didn't lock the door I guess she can just easily walk out of that place. Hmm.

Required fields are marked *

I've asked the same question to myself too....that serial killer seemed too stupid to have overlook this and not tie her up instead of letting her running loose in that barber shop....the only explanation I can think of is that the serial killer has done this many times, and he got away easily, so he has high ego and is overly confident that the gal would not easily run away just like the few other victims who are not as lucky as she is....btw I think she's stupid enough to follow a shady-looking man into the dark alleys at night when I saw her doing such a brainless thing....I hope that she truly learn her lesson after this :)

I think it has a lot of potential too. It wasn't perfect; it kind of hit you over the head with the setup as first episodes often do and the editing needs work, but I thought the acting was strong and the story piqued my interest.

I'm glad the ratings are off to a good start.

Really liked it once the emergency call started. The bit immediately before that was lame -- I've seen too many shows with people being unreasonable in their opposition to the hero/heroine and the Good Idea.

And, as Imbuk mentioned, in the serial killer business, the pros take care of the hand-phone first. At least they didn't have the battery dying. That would have been the last straw.

Yes the drama has some little loopholes like SPOILER: They guy is basically a professional killer, why did he not get rid of her phone ? Why did he let her alone with knives ? Why did she not take one of them to be able to fight back ?

And for sure I DID NOT appreciate the part about " Oh this case is probably a pervert case, who give a fuck about rescuing the victim"!! Like WTF, so if he does not intend to kill her, it is okay for him to kidnap a woman and rape her , while the police keep on drinking coffee ?!!!

Except that, I loved everything else, the drama is beautiful, the actors are not miscast, they are strong performers, I already love their characters and can not wait to see their growth and the story unveils !!!I am not suprised about the good viewership rating, this drama as of now truly deserves it!!!

I didn't get their apathetic attitude either - was the police really just going to let her be raped?
Also, SPOILER::
aren't workers at the police emergency hotline supposed to be trained to handle scenarios like a kidnapping? Why does everyone (except the lead trained in the US) look so lost?

0

Required fields are marked *

I agree.....it seemed that the only professional one is the head who is Lee Hana, the rest are like normal customer service officers handling normal phonecalls, so when they receive a really distress call eg. kidnapping or "somebody is trying to kill me" calls, they are at a lost....I wonder how do they handle such situations prior to her return from the USA?? lol....

0

oh ya, not forgetting the stupid higher-up boss who initially rejected her proposal to set up the "Golden Time Team" to handle such emergency calls....I really dislike that big boss....he doesn't seemed to care much over humans' life at stake....as usual the big bosses in Kdramaland are always jerks ....

I'm confused as to why Hwarang's ratings are considered "good"... When Uncontrollably Fond and Scarlet Heart were getting those numbers, they were considered bad. All three are kinda similar in being a pre-produced drama competing against another mega-blockbuster drama in the same time-slot...so what variable makes Hwarang not a flop?

(this isn't me ranking on any of these dramas btw, just curious as to what makes the ratings "good" or "bad.")

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

That's probably because UF/Scarlet Heart WERE the anticipated blockbuster dramas at the time of their airing and those numbers were underperforming, while Hwarang had people revising their expectations downwards so the same ratings performance is seen as good (and probably better once RTDK is out of the way)

hwarang is going up against a drama that is getting 26% ratings right now and is still managing to get an average of 6-7% ratings which is really good. on the day romantic doctor was pre-empted it managed to get 13% ratings.

drama's like weightlifting fairy only managed to stay in the 5% range when it's competition got around 16% which is lower than romantic doctor

uncontrollably fond started high but ratings dropped, even scarlet heart's ratings dropped before moonlight drawn by clouds ratings soared into the 20's

Moon Lovers rating had been down since the first episode, it picked up after moonlight ended. While hwarang rating has been increase since the first episode, even though not much.

When moonlight ended, moon lovers increase to 9-10% while hwarang increase to 13% when doctor was shown. UF rating had been down ever since the first episode.

UF ratings were up and down and then pretty stabile. It lost due to being unexpected heavy melodrama against fantasy drama and rom-com with top-billed cast. W had same gain-loosing problems with raitings and JI also performed meh. UF was never far behind them and it was sold in a lot of countries, making pretty backs. People still overly harsh to it.

we are talking about comparing rating with hwarang. UF started with 12.5%, ended with 8.4%. We dont know how hwarang gonna be but for now its stable whille facing 25% competition. so compare to UF right now, hwarang is good.

Rating isnt everything. I love Oh My Geum Bi, I only like hwarang. But I like to see a group of rookie/not so famous to have a success drama. (Hwang guys and girls are no where near popular as Woo Bin, Suzy, Lee Jun Ki, IU)

Required fields are marked *

Moon Lovers rating dipped to below 6% after episode 3 and around that time, Moonlight surpassed 20%.

But Moon Lovers steadily increased in ratings for each episode (minus the mixed up episode with baseball game) after episode 8 while around that time, Moonlight experienced slight dip in the rating, accomplishing between 18 - 20%. Moon Lovers only managed to break 10% after Moonlight wrapped up.

Hwarang has the advantage with the delay broadcast and the low expectation, with so many having witnessed the epic failure of so many pre-produced dramas. But with solid storyline, I think Hwarang has a chance to surpass 10% and increase in ratings when RDTK ended its run this week, which I badly hope for and I think the drama greatly deserves.

I love Moon Lovers (for Lee Joon Gi mainly), but there is no denying that Hwarang is a better pre-produced drama despite the lower budget. At least, there is no editing issues, incoherent flow of scene, subpar acting etc.

The dramas actually weren't flops. Their numbers were slightly below average at worst. The reason why everyone found them to be disappointing, though, was because both UF and ML were way overhyped. Each drama was expected to hit big (in many ways, ML still did very well, since it became the #1 drama on Chinese websites), but ultimately became outperformed by dramas that people didn't expect much from. It was mostly bad word-of-mouth that lead the two dramas to get so much backlash.

As what some beanies pointed out in the Goblin recap, moving EP 14 to next week allows the death of Shin to have its full impact. It will be like an entire week of his death weighing on the viewers. If they showed EP 14 with Shin reappearing (because he NEEDS to come back) right after he died in EP 13, that wonderful final scene loses its impact. The one week wait will serve as some kind of time passing both for the show and the viewers.

Of course, it will also be good for the cast and crew to have more time to work on the final three episodes, because they are seriously on a tight schedule. I hope the show finishes without any problem or accident.

Now that Fairy ended I am downloading all the episodes to marathon. I am quite excited.

In the dying minutes of the episode, a tall, lithe figure will appear, great coat flapping in the wind, long long legs, striding confidently, unhurriedly, in deliberate, measured steps toward the 29-year-old ET, who catches sight of him, blushes, and waves at him across the tables. The legs stop, and the camera pans up, up, up to that dear beloved face, which breaks into the sweetest smile, crinkling at the corners, as he murmurs, "I'm sorry I kept you waiting, I'm sorry you waited so long for me..."

Puberty Medley - Re-watching Many of the scenes again and again. This coming-of-age show is precious and wow the actor Sung Hyun is now playing supporting role with
Jang Hyuk.

Almost 27% for Doctor Kim? really? A show just few points better than that Crush porn.

Night Light is dead because of scriptwriters incompetency.

Blue Sea - Stuck at 15. too boring and c grade drama going on.

Goblin hitting high also surprised me. 1 hour 20min+ hazardously long episode and disastrous writeoff of the villain. Goblin is dots in a mask.

Voice - Episode 1 lacked the thrill. The violence in trailer looked scary but in the show it lacked the ohhhhh factor. Jang Hyuk didn't convince me. I think 1st episode was quite abrupt and the time play was displayed foolishly. Well, timeplays are usually like that in fiction.

Father I'll Take Care of You - Episode 18 - Spoonfeed Hyun Woo+audience all the info. And this scriptwriter is gunning Dong Gui to become a writer. Yeah Yeah. Hae Sook rules.

Flower Boy Next Door - liked 1st 3 episodes.

All the hyped dramas ended up as quite mediocre.

I am just curious, are you still watching these drama or you have already stopped watching after few episode? Except Voice which just started.

But I do agree Night Light is a dead show. The team shoud just wrap it quickly and move on. If this is on KBS, I am sure it will be cut off already at much earlier episodes.

I find it hard to drop shows once i've covered 25% of their air schedule so i'm watching most of them. Night Light i dropped right in 1st few weeks. I just randomly watch youtube videos of Night Light and done with with the week. I think even 16 episodes were a bit too much.

I have my hopes on Voice and Missing 9 with combi of Introverted Boss. Chief Kim Trailers are so meh. Gonna try 1st episode of Defendant.

I see, because i read your comments about that particular shows are repetitive so i was just wondering if you are still watching them. But yes some viewers will finish watching whatever they have started. In my case, i might not drop it totally but watching here and there, skipping few episode just like I did with Goblin, LOTBS, Night Light and WFKBJ.

I love thriller drama so most likely i'll watch Voice until the end and i am a huge fan of Jang Hyuk too. Besides, waiting for Defendant and Missing 9 too. To balance the routine, Introverted Boss looks promising. Gonna try Chief Kim too.

One problem with goblin is the episode is really long and lotsssssssssss of flashback. The KSH scene must have been on repeat every single episode. We watch the same scenes many times over and over again. I watch again episodes sometimes but cant really do that with goblin, its 90 minutes each while half of that is flashback and slow motion. I still like it but really we dont need 90 minutes each to know the storylines.

RTDK is my favourite and I dont think it is overhyped but I also understand that some ppl may found it overrated. (just like what I felt on drama like DOTS). But 50% mostly probably of the main casts i. e Han Suk Kyu and Seo Hyun Jin that I will watch any of their drama.

Hwarang on the other hand not something that I can continue watch. I probably will continue to watch if the main leads are someone better. For me, plot and actors always play important parts, but in case the plot failed, actors that I am looking for. Sometimes my interest not something what most Beanies love.

I dropped Goblin too because it's sooo long with so many flashback, but I'm planning to pick it up when it's done airing, that way I can just fast forward on the flashbacks that I already know without having to wait for the next episodes.

I should say that Kim Sam Bu (Han Seok Kyu) is more handsome and attractive more than the other two younger actors in Romantic Doctor. Even Nurse Oh is more stylist than Seo Hyun Jin (Seo Jung) with her black outfit. This is the first drama that I feel I don't care the younger actors because of the charms of senior actors. I got why this show is popular but less buzz around younger viewers.

I REALLY LOVE VOICE GUYS!!! Okay I'm not so good at pointing out flaws of dramas, like writing and what not unlike some people, so it's so easy for me to get a thrill from watching Voice.

I've never watched Jang Hyuk or Lee Hana in anything before, even though I know Jang Hyuk's an amazing actor (Lee Hana's a new name for me) but they are KILLING IT! I also love their chemistry! I'm a sucker for partners in crime.

My mom didn't plan on watching Voice because she only watches Romance dramas, but I convinced her to try it out aND SHE'S HOOKED! We watched it together and she finds it hilarious whenever Jang Hyuk's character rages on Lee Hana's character but she's so calm and collected whenever she responds to him, she makes him give up with that serious stare of hers. I love opposites <3

Hwarang is actually exceeding my expectations. And their ratings are sure to rise even higher after Doctor ends. The storyline is simple at best, the romance is trite and a tad uncomfortable to watch (just waiting for ban-ryu and sooho's sister to fall in love already!!). BUT i'm sticking with it for the bromance. that is pretty much the biggest selling point of this drama.
