Lee Jong-seok gets a sunbae and a little brother for While You Were Sleeping
Casting continues on SBS’s upcoming drama While You Were Sleeping, with actress Go Sung-hee (Spy, My Beautiful Bride) signing on and Kim Min-jae (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim, The Lonely Shining Goblin) in talks to join. The series will be a supernatural legal show, set around a woman who dreams of accidents that will befall people and the prosecutor who works to prevent those events from materializing.
Lee Jong-seok (W–Two Worlds) was cast early on as the prosecutor lead, while Suzy (Uncontrollably Fond) has been confirmed as the leading lady. The drama marks Lee Jong-seok’s third project with scriptwriter Park Hye-ryun, with whom he’d previously worked together on Pinocchio and I Hear Your Voice, both of which were engaging, upbeat contemporary romances with slight paranormal bents.
Go Sung-hee is set to play Lee Jong-seok’s hoobae from university but his sunbae as a prosecutor. She may have a soft, cute appearance and sweet way of talking, but she’s a sharp prosecutor with a high indictment rate and a knack for getting suspects to confess.
Kim Min-jae, meanwhile, is up to play Lee Jong-seok’s younger brother, described as full of charm and appeal. Still in high school, his dream is to be a police officer like their father, but his grades aren’t quite good enough. The two brothers live together, and the younger one enjoys domestic work and taking care of the household, which sounds like an adorable bromance in the making.
Well, I can’t say I love everyone in the cast, but I’ll do my best, for the sake of this writer. I can handle Suzy even if I’ve only ever thought her a serviceable actress at best, because she has a likable aura that goes a long way with her. And I don’t mind Kim Min-jae that much; he’s been steadily building up a resume with small parts in lots of dramas, such as the Goryeo king in Goblin and the stalwart nurse assistant in Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim (other credits include My Little Baby, Because It’s the First Time, Twenty Again, and Persevere Gu Hae-ra). But Go Sung-hee… She’s been dull as dirt in everything I’ve seen her in (her credits: Miss Korea, Records of a Night Watchman, Spy, and My Beautiful Bride), and she has essentially the opposite of screen presence.
On the upside, also cast are Lee Sang-yub (This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair) and Jung Hae-in (Night Light), both of whom are welcome additions. Lee Sang-yub has a connection with the drama’s director, PD Oh Choong-hwan, having put in a memorable guest appearance on the PD’s last drama, Doctors.
While You Were Sleeping will be entirely pre-produced and will air on SBS later this year.
