Why You Should Watch: Biscuit Teacher Star Candy

Since the universe decided to be cruel and leave us hanging with no new episode of Goblin today, it seemed like a good day to go digging around in the old drama vault for a Gong Yoo marathon. Because you can never have enough Gong Yoo in your drama-watching life, I say.

When we first launched this Why You Should Watch series to give everyone a chance to champion their favorite shows (and get us all addicted to them, of course!), Biscuit Teacher Star Candy was the first drama I thought of. It’s a sentimental favorite of mine from back in 2005, featuring an adorable Gong Yoo (The Lonely Shining Goblin, Big) as a high school bad boy and Gong Hyo-jin (Jealousy Incarnate, The Producers) as his scrappy teacher. It’s one of those dramas I’ve loved for eons but never got to talk about with other people, because for some inexplicable reason, no one around me has seen it. What madness! So here’s my case for why you should watch Biscuit Teacher Star Candy and squee about it with me. Because no one likes to be a fan club of one!

If you’ve ever seen Gong Hyo-jin or Gong Yoo in anything, the drama pretty much sells itself, since they’re now both established romantic comedy leads, and they were great together in this bickering noona romance early in their careers. (And for a fun treasure hunt, look out for: Lee Yoon-ji, Choi Yeo-jin, Jang Hee-jin, Go Jun-hee, Jung Kyeo-woon, Jung Eui-chul, Seo Joon-young, and Yoo Da-in when they were wee little rookies.)

The high school youth drama is like a light-hearted comic-book version of School 2013’s coming-of-age stories, but with romance at the center, and a flair for wacky hyperbole. For instance, the heroine was a legendary jjang (the best fighter) in high school, and she gets these impossibly acrobatic fight scenes in the drama, only to show us in the epilogues after each episode how the fights actually went down (flailing limbs, lucky coincidences). So not as badass as legend makes her seem.

The story is really about two rebellious teenagers, each legendary troublemakers at one high school, but in different times. The heroine, Na Bori (Gong Hyo-jin), was kicked out of school for single-handedly taking down an entire group of boys who attacked her classmate, and her story gets passed down among the students. She eventually gets her life together and becomes a teacher, and is determined to get hired at the school that once expelled her.

The hero, Park Tae-in (Gong Yoo), is the present-day troublemaker, a popular boy with a quick temper and a colorful past. He has an abusive father who left his mother and started a new family, and regularly sends Tae-in abroad or locks him up in hospitals or beats him. It’s no wonder that he’s so angry and bristly and terrified of being abandoned by everyone.

The show’s title comes from the heroine’s name, Bori, which means “barley”—the students take to calling her Biscuit Teacher because barley biscuits are a common snack. And traditionally, barley biscuits are packaged with little star candies inside, so they come in a set—two things that go together, like peanut butter and jelly. So of course, star candy refers to Tae-in.

At first Bori fails to get hired as a teacher at her old high school, but when she gets caught up in an incident with Tae-in outside of school, she gets an offer from his stepmother, the director of the school board, to become Tae-in’s watchdog and keep him out of trouble. She clearly doesn’t know what she’s getting herself into, but Bori takes the job as a temp and isn’t allowed to teach any subjects, but becomes his homeroom teacher.

From the start it’s a disaster, as Tae-in is basically the star of the school and a rude little punk who makes her life hell from Day 1. After suffering his pranks, she decides to take a different approach to survive at this job, and tries to befriend him. At first he finds her annoying, but then as Bori starts to get invested in her students’ lives, running out day or night to save them from this or that scrape outside of school, Tae-in begins to see that she’s different from every other adult in his life—she’s sincere and just like them, and she genuinely cares about all of their problems.

She’s the first person to ever make him feel like he’s not a big failure and not wanted, who doesn’t give up on him no matter what he does. So naturally he falls completely head over heels in love with her, and starts declaring it very loudly like a lovesick fool. It’s one of the main reasons I adore this drama.

She just thinks it’s cute puppy love, and that everyone has a crush on a teacher during their school days—in fact, the reason she wanted to be a teacher at this school was because of her high school crush, the art teacher who also happens to be Tae-in’s uncle (his stepmother’s brother, technically). She actually dates the art teacher, but he’s such an ineffectual second lead that you feel like his dull as dishwater character is designed entirely to showcase how much better Tae-in is. So even though Tae-in is always pining from afar and jealous of his uncle, you’re watching it going: Pfft, that guy? She’s so going to dump his ass.

What Bori doesn’t realize, of course, is that she’s already leaning on Tae-in and confiding in him more than anyone else in her life—more than the guy she’s actually dating—and though Tae-in never in a million years thinks she’d ever love him back, he can’t help but always want to be by her side and get to love her on his own. He’s just utterly devoted to his one-sided love, which is, of course, why it totally slays me.

I couldn’t find any good clips out there for this show, so I had to make my own. Unfortunately that means they’re not subbed, but I’ll give you the setup and the important dialogue for each:

It’s Bori’s first day as a teacher, and when she’s greeted with cheers, she thinks to herself: “That’s right, kids! Bori is here! I’m going to become a really impressive teacher!” Cue: Tae-in, the real reason for all the cheering. He recognizes her from outside of school and scoffs, “You’re… a teacher?” She takes issue with his condescending attitude and starts to lecture him…

Didn’t I say he was a punk?

Bori and Tae-in accidentally get locked in a hospital storage room together (why do drama storage rooms always lock from the outside?), and while she’s screaming for someone to save them, he realizes he’d rather not be rescued, and quietly turns off his phone. She finally calms down and thinks to look for her cell phone, which she left behind in the hospital room, and asks for his.

Tae-in: “Aigoo, the battery’s out. Oh no. It’s been dying so quickly these days.” She asks what they’re supposed to do, looking so upset, while he looks so happy. He can barely hide his smile as he says, “What can we do? We’ll just… have to stay here… till morning…”

Later that night in the hospital storage room, Bori wakes up when she hears Tae-in crying from a nightmare. Bori: “Why are you crying? Did you have a dream?” He tells her not to wait for his uncle to come around: “My mom waited her whole life for my father. He never came once. After she died, he came one time—to her funeral. Don’t wait around your whole life for someone who won’t come like she did, and throw me away. Don’t throw me away.”

At this point she doesn’t know that he likes her or why he’d say that, so she just treats him like a puppy like she always does. Bori: “Why would you worry about that? Why would I throw you away? I can’t live without you. I won’t ever throw you away. Don’t cry, okay?” Tae-in holds out his pinky: “Then promise. That you won’t throw me away.”

Tae-in realizes his feelings for Bori and runs to tell her: “Teacher! Teacher, I like you! Park Tae-in likes his teacher! Madly, crazily! Wait for me just one year… no, until I graduate! I’ll come find you and propose! I’m going to become a really impressive guy and propose to you! I! Love! Na Bori! I! Love! Na Bori! I! Love! Na Bori! I love her! I love her! I love her!”

Kyaaaaaaaa~

And now it’s your turn!

If you’d like submit an entry for Why You Should Watch, email your submission to hello@dramabeans.com.

A few guidelines:

  • Your entry can be short or long (but let’s not go crazy here; we may edit if it’s insanely long).
  • Include at least one image and one video clip.
  • It can be a show that has been recapped, because the idea is to appeal to people who have not yet seen it—so even if we’ve written twenty recaps, the new viewer probably hasn’t read any of them. We do, however, think the idea is particularly useful for unrecapped and/or underrepresented dramas.
  • Write for an audience who has not seen the show yet. Assume no prior knowledge! (And don’t give away major spoilers.)
  • Please, to the best of your ability, use proper grammar and spelling, and spell out full titles and names (no acronyms).

Can’t wait to discover all those new dramas!

Whoever said they're kpop drama veteran is a liar if they never watched na bori & tae in. They are one of my longest wallpaper on my desktop & i still have the ost in my current tracklist. When kpop couple reunion were crazy few years ago, i was hoping they would be among the couple reunited but to no avail. This drama was everything cute from tae in n sad from nabori. If u want to start anywhere with kpop drama, put this in ur top list. Highly recommended. Warning: Dont get too hyper after watching coz of its sweetness n melt from gongyoo n gonghyojin cuteess.

OMo...I watched this way back then and started to follow Gong Yoo through his dramas. Gong Hyo Jin too. It's quite a typical drama for the times (the fashion!) but Gong Yoo was irritatingly endearing as Tae In. Actually I plan to rewatch this once Goblin is over!

It's such a lovely drama and for me the mold for every noona romance. I think I watched it after seeing Coffee Prince and I loved it even. Even when the second lead was a black hole of charisma. It was like he sucked all of the joy out of the drama, whenever he was on screen.

Prepare of cuteness overload:

One of my favorite Korean dramas of all time, and my favorite noona romance bar none. I will watch anything that Gong Yoo's in, but I definitely like him best when he's cheeky and charming and mischievous--all of which describes Tae-in in BTSC, who's a deliciously complex character. The airport scene, the roses, the shoes, kimbap and cherry blossoms, and above all Tae-in running to Bori and absolutely refusing to let anything sway his love ... these are all scenes I can never get tired of re-watching, despite how dated the drama is, how frustrating and sometimes logic-failing Bori's relationship with the dull-as-dishwater second lead is, and how campy some of the humor is. BTSC is definitely worth watching and re-watching. Big thanks to Dramabeans for introducing me to the drama in their top 10 noona romance's hit list (and for likewise, introducing me to Unstoppable High Kick, for the similarly unstoppable charm of Jung Il-woo : ) ).

Went on a gong yoo look back once I saw ttb and started goblin soon after. Only got into kdramas recently so I hadn't really seen biscuit and coffee prince, but now I've ticked these two off my list! Biscuit's pace slows tremendously when the two of them are not on screen and really gong yoo and ghj sells the romance with their charms. I felt the teacher student dynamic was satisfactorily dealt with as well. I really knew gong hyo Jin was a treasure but because gong yoo doesn't really have many dramas I'm so sad I've missed out on watching him all my life. Thank goodness for goblin!

Thanks, girlfriday, for explaining the title. Its inscrutability was a turn-off at first, but the DB rating convinced me to give it a go, and I'm glad I did. I'm usually leery of student-teacher romances, but this one is the exception because of the way it was handled, so it didn't feel icky to me the way others have come across. And it ended up a lot better for the OTP than did FLOWER BOY RAMEN SHOP. As always, your mileage may vary.

I also found it translated as HARDTACK TEACHER AND SUGAR CANDY. Hardtack is a twice-baked "ship's biscuit" -- hence very tough to last in storage on long sea voyages, military campaigns, etc. A very apt nickname for the teacher, given her hard-boiled image from her own school days. In the US, there's also an old-fashioned hard candy called barley candy, so that makes an interesting parallel. I didn't know the biscuits and candy are sold together. Now the title makes sense.

After I watched COFFEE PRINCE for the first time last winter and fell hook, line, and sinker for Gong Yoo, I started watching his earlier work, and marathoned BISCUIT TEACHER in early October while live-watching MOON LOVERS and MOONLIGHT. Needed a rom-com change of pace, as well as a warmup for GOBLIN. It was just the ticket.

In addition to all the hijinks and levity, there are touching interludes, too. Plus the scheming step-family and predatory females pursuing both male leads. Gong Yoo is his usual charming self even when cutting up, and is droolworthy in his swimming scenes. Gong Hyo-jin is terrific as the noona who takes up the challenge of civilizing him.

The OST has some very nice instrumentals, and a rock track with a lot of pizzazz. There is lots of good background music, too.

Well, it's kind of funny. Here, Gong Yoo (a student) falls for a lot older woman (a teacher) some may find improper. In Goblin, he falls for a lot younger woman (an ahjussi loves a high schooler) some may find eww. I like both dramas, but this biscuit teacher and star candy really has something I can't easily forget: sweetness and tenderness. What a lucky woman to have someone like Tae In.

I was a teacher in Asia who had male students of all stages flirt with me. Of course, I HATED IT and found it really annoying. Even the ones that drew the most sympathy from me, I never developed romantic intentions towards them. With that said, I loved this drama hahaha

Biscuit (GHJ) was sympathetic to all her students, and Gong Yoo was a particularly endearing. They understood one another because both were essentially misfits who actually really wanted to get along with others around them. To be clear, that doesn't justify their relationship lol but she tries to wait until he is no longer her student to be "official"; he's the one that loves her more and follows her around obnoxiously. His affections actually get her in trouble repeatedly because of their roles and locations in society. So it's not an easy relationship from the perspective of outsider, nor was it easy based on the mechanisms of the people in their lives. It was just nice that Star Candy was steadfastly devoted to (and protected) his Biscuit Teacher and that's a good trait across all male leads.

As a former teacher, I watched it with the mindset of "Oh, it's Gong Yoo, who looks too old to be in HS, play a HS student." Essentially, I was watching GONG YOO romance GONG HYO JIN and enjoying their skillful acting. I didn't buy into the teacher/student relationship and pretty much tried to selectively ignore it lol

I've seen this before and I remember watching this because I was flailing over Gong Yoo after I've seen him in She's on Duty. This was the time when they have cringeworthy fashion and the time when they were probably short on budget to re-shoot scenes. Haha. If you watch this again, pay attention and you will see those boom poles with shotgun mics. There was also seen when GHJ was walking in the corridor and you can see somene else's pants running ahead of her. It was so weird but overall, a lovely drama.

they should do one for I Remember You, cause it is still not a popular choice and many folks have not seen it. I read comments like "I am not sure if I should watch that" every day, and some are iffy cause they read the recaps and think they will be bored. some are put off by not enough romance or the team going after different cases. but they all do their bit in coming closer to the truth though. I have run out of explanations ...

Um...no, this is Not For Me.

A. Student/Teacher romantic shenanigans are not ok. Ew.

B. Gong Yoo looks too old to be a college senior, let alone a high school senior. How many years has he been held back, exactly? (He was 26 when this was filmed, so...yeah. Way too old.)

C. Gong Yoo is clearly older than Gong Hyo-Jin. (In real life, I don't know their relative ages, but he appears a good 5 years older than her.)

I went & looked it up and she is younger, though only by a year.

But this high-school-students-being-played-by-people-in-their-twenties-who-don't-even-look-like-they-could-be-in-high-school is pretty much endemic in Western shows, as well. Probably because of work hour and education rules to protect minors?

Girlfriday I loved your memorable review on this drama, which is basically one of the first drama I watched of gong hyo jin and gong yoo. I am a hardcore fan, so when I watch any actor's show which makes me his/ her fan, I tend to cover all of their dramas at a row. So, this one I started watching because at that time I discovered GHJ fresh after master's sun, so this one was my second or third drama discovery when going through asianwiki lol. But anyway, it was underrated of course, but that couldn't dampen my spirit, and wow, I was happily taken aback. It has all the feeling of nostalgia, and yeah, as you said Gong Yoo as the lovesick puppy who doesn't shy away from describing his love for the teacher, was adorbs. And I loved ghj's quirks already, so this made me a gong yoo fan too. Sadly this is his only project that I watched, till now, minus goblin. Coffee prince couldn't attract me, for some odd reason, but I loved this down to earth, boy and girl next door drama. It has so much heart to it, which dramas these days lack, they are more gloss and shine , while here the drama shines because of the story and the chemistry between the actors. Anyway, thanks you a ton for mentioning how much you favor the drama! Loved reading your review, have to say again.
** I have started watching this again heheh. Your review pulled me in.

i watched this as soon as ep 13 of goblin finished .... bec gong yoo !!!!

omg! he is such an adorable puppy. that second lead though, i have never come across such a killjoy in kdrama before. biscuit i would have hated if she had been played by anyone else except GHJ bec she kept going back and forth till my head hurt

I loved all his antics including the flowers but For me the standout scene was when the 2nd guy tries to poison his mind that biscuit is just with him out of guilt, and then he gets drunk....

and i was like shit! here comes another round of unnecessary angst ... but he surprised me - literally running to biscuit and telling her that he loved her above all. And the lovely dressing down he gave to the useless 2nd lead ... best scene ever!

I had to scream-squeal-wiggle solo dance party when I saw this post!!! I tried this after loving Gong Yoo in Coffee prince. Although I hadn't seen a lot of them, I was already very into kdramas, but it felt like this one got into my system in the best possible way. I thought about it all the time while I was watching it and then for weeks after I would think of some scenes and break into smiles, probably creeping out those near me at the time.
The first thing I did when the streaming site I watched it on went away was to pay way too much money for a probably bootleg copy of it on Amazon. I needed to have it accessible to me always. Of course the DVDs didn't work in my DVD player but they did on my laptop at the time. Now I can't get rid of the laptop because it's the only thing that will play those DVDs!

From what I read of your review, does this mean Tae In (Gong Yoo's character) ended up with Na Bori, right? No need to elaborate. Just answer 'yes' or 'no'. I'm really in search for a happy ending in one of Gong Yoo's drama.

I'm on the hunt for more Gong Yoo dramas after Goblin, and this sounds so interesting! Thanks for the introduction and here's to me trying to find an English sub version somewhere...
